                    Book Description

The second edition of this authoritative introduction to the global environmental fluctuations of the Quaternary period has been thoroughly revised and updated, and now includes two new chapters: one on Quaternary soils and sediments, and one on the Milankovitch theory and its implications for Quaternary climatic oscillations. The book draws on examples from every continent, including Antarctica, and features a superb range of maps and illustrations. The time span covered includes relevant events during the Tertiary which set the stage for the Quaternary glaciations and associated changes in climate, vegetation, and prehistoric human development. Focusing on the interactions between geological, biological and hydrological processes, the book explores the effects of accelerating human impact on the environment and considers how far evidence from the Quaternary may be useful in predicting future environmental change.

                    3 out of 5 stars quaternary.......2006-03-15

this book that concerns with quaternary environments, is one of the best reviewed one. However, if it is comperated with "reconstructing quaternary environments" by walker and lowe, it is lack of some metods relating palaeogeographical reconstructing.

                      Book Description

How were the tropical Americas formed? This ambitious volume draws on extensive, multidisciplinary research to develop new views of the geological formation of the isthmus linking North and South America and of the major environmental changes that reshaped the Neotropics to create its present-day marine and terrestrial ecosystems.

Recent discoveries show that dramatic changes in climate and ocean circulation can occur very quickly, and that ecological communities respond just as rapidly. Abrupt changes in the composition of fossil assemblages, formerly dismissed as artifacts of a poor fossil record, now are seen as accurate records of swift changes in the composition of ocean communities.

The twenty-four contributors use current work in paleontology, geology, oceanography, anthropology, ecology, and evolution to paint this challenging portrait of rapid environmental and evolutionary change. Their conclusions argue for a revision of existing interpretations of the fossil record and the processes—including invading Eurasian peoples—that have produced it.

                        Book Description

Ice Age Earth is the first detailed review of global climate change in the Late Quaternary, combining a summary of research and a synthetic description. Alastair Dawson focuses on changes in the Earth's geology and climate between the last interglacial period and the final melting of the last great ice sheets 130,000 to 7,000 years ago. He describes the study of ocean sediments and ice cores and the value of these findings to the development of advance circulation models, with special emphasis given to regional variability in glacial history, the rapidity of past climate change, and the complexity of environmental responses to widespread deglaciation. Periglacial environments--as well as lakes, rivers, mires, volcanic and aeolian activity, and crustal and sea-level movement--are also considered.

                          Book Description

Iceland provides an unique stage on which to study the natural environment, both past and present, and it is understanding both aspects of reconstructing the past and observing and interpreting the present that form the focus of the contributions to this volume.

The papers are all written by active researchers and incorporate both reviews and new data. Although concentrating largely on the recent Quaternary timescale a wide range of topics is explored including subglacial volcanism, onshore and offshore evidence for the Last Glacial Maximum and subsequent deglaciation, current glacial characteristics including jökulhlaups and glacial landsystems, soil development, Holocene ecosystem change, current oceanography, impacts of volcanic sulphur loading, chemical weathering and the CO 2 budget and documentary evidence for historical climate.

The key element of the volume is that for the first time it provides a wide overview of a range of topics for which Iceland provides an almost unparalleled laboratory emphasizing the importance of research on this small island for studies over a much broader global scale. These reviews point the way to future research directions and are supplemented by extensive illustrations and a comprehensive bibliography.

                          * Wide range of related topics covered both from a present day and quaternary perspective
                          * Reviews from scientists active in each research area across a range of subjects providing both overviews and new data supplemented by an extensive bibliography
                          * Extensive illustrations and examples from the field

                                          Book Description

An offbeat and satirical work of what might be considered literary fiction, The Chronicles of a Cynic is a loosely allegorical spin on DanteÂ's Purgatorio.

This contemporary bildungsroman follows the unlikely path of the title character—a writer/educator named Dan Taylor-Gehry—across the country to teaching jobs, through loves gained and lost, against encounters with the seven deadly sins, amidst moderate success in writing and publishing, and ultimately downward through his darkest psychological recesses. The cynicÂ's frenetic pace matches the transience of KerouacÂ's Sal Paradise, and the bombastic tone of his narration evokes visions of Ignatius Reilly waxing philosophical from behind a hot dog stand.

With his cynicism rooted in his desire for cultural purity, Taylor-Gehry takes his idealism too far by resorting to ridiculous acts of violence against others and himself. During his incarceration, he is forced to prove his sanity by charting his life story, resulting in this darkly comic novel of ideas.
