    Book Description

This selected collection of contributions focuses on the modification of organisms through genetic manipulation. Scientists from various disciplines assess the quality of our knowledge on which risk assessment of genetechnology methods is currently based. Molecular biology and ecology, but also aspects of evolutionary and population genetics, human genetics and genetically modified food are among the topics covered. The book analyzes the impetus behind, and progress in, research methods which have been introduced into genetechnology risk assessment procedures over the last three years, and, in so doing, reveals gaps in our understanding of evolutionary processes. The history of risk assessment and ethical implications with respect to the deliberate release of GMOs are considered. Finally, the transfer of knowledge from the laboratory to the public, and the role of the media in this process are discussed. This monograph will be of great interest to all those concerned with the risk assessment of genetechnology methods.

      Book Description

Geological maps remain a fundamental tool in earth science. They provide an essential link as geology continues to expand and diversify; computer methods are adding further to their power and versatility. Hence it is more important than ever that students of the Earth are familiar with the principles of working with geological maps. This book introduces geological maps in a clear, readable and practical way. Abstract and idealistic examples (so common in other treatments of the subject) have been avoided and almost all the illustrations used are taken from real maps and real situations around the world. This new edition has been substantially revised and provides worked solutions to the numerous map exercises. Extensive use of three dimensional diagrams and eight colour maps coupled with the up-to-date and lively text will ensure that this book remains the standard reference for students of earth science. New chapters on wider uses of geological maps, such as in environmental planning and in understanding the landscape around us, will also make the book indispensable for environmental scientists and geographers, and of interest to amateur geologists. Book Description

An Introduction to Geological Structures and Maps 6/e is a concise text that leads the student from the simplest ideas on geological structures right through a first on geological mapping. It is designed to help students working with little or no supervision. Each new topic is explained and illustrated by figures, and exercises are set on succeeding maps. The sixth edition has been completely revised and updated. It includes more problems to make the progression from the simplest maps to the most advanced even more gradual, and the maps and figures have been redrawn throughout. A new chapter on planetary geology can be used to interpret geological information being obtained from elsewhere in the solar system.

                                Book Description

The ultrasonic motor, invented in 1980, utilizes the piezoelectric effect in the ultrasonic frequency range to provide the motive force. (In conventional electric motors the motive force is electromagnetic). The result is a motor with unusually good low-speed high-torque and power-to-weight characteristics. It has already found applications in camera autofocus mechanisms, medical equipment subject to high magnetic fields, and motorized car accessories. Its applications will increase as designers become more familiar with its unique characteristics. This book is the result of a collaboration between the inventor and an expert in conventional electric motors: the result is an introduction to the general theory presented in a way that links it to conventional motor theory. It will be invaluable both to motor designers and to those who design with and use electric motors as an introduction to this important new invention.

                                Book Description

This volume is intended to provide researchers and graduate students with the basic aspects of the continuum modeling of electroelastic interactions in solids. A concise treatment of linear, nonlinear, static and dynamic theories and problems is presented. The emphasis is on formulation and understanding of problems useful in device applications rather than solution techniques of mathematical problems. The mathematics used in this book is minimal. This volume is suitable for a one-semester graduate course on electroelasticity. It can also be used as a reference for graduate students and researchers in mechanics and acoustics.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book on device analytical techniques.......2005-03-19

This book by Prof Yang is an excellent book for people want to know more about piezoelectricity and piezoelectric devices.

It starts with a complete theory of piezoelectricity with the intention to get readers familirize with the fundamentals. This part is complicated from its appearance, but there is a purpose. Such formulation is essential in dealing with complicated issues which discussed in detail later, ie the effect of various bias fields like thermo, stress, acceleration and so on.

After descriptions of the basic nonlinear theory, the chapters followed restore to the linear theory for various strctural elements and applications as devices. It touched almost all applications of acosutic devices with simple analytical solutions.

The methods and techniques are not directly related to the engineering solutions of actual problems, but it is the first step you have to take towards the direction.

I highly recommend this book to graduate students and engineers who are interested in advanced knowledge on this subject.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A609483. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis provides closed form expressions for the angular distribution in azimuth and elevation planes for a geometrically based single bounce spheroid model, The geometry of the spheroid is defined by the semi-major axis a and the semi-minor axis b. The other parameter of interest in the model is the distance D between the base station and the mobile station. The latter is assumed to be at the center of the spheroid. The mobile station is assumed to be the transmitter, while the base station is the receiver. This thesis investigates the effects of the above parameters on the angular distribution of the received waves. Important parameters such as the r.m.s angle spread in azimuth and elevation plane are calculated from the p.d.f. expressions derived. The behavior of these r.m.s angle spreads versus the ratio a/D or b/D respectively is also investigated.

                                      Book Description

Involving electricity, elasticity, thermodynamics and crystallography, several scientific traditions and approaches and leading physicists, the history of piezoelectricity provides an advantageous perspective on late nineteenth century physics and its development. The beginnings of piezoelectricity, the first history of the subject, exhaustively examines how these diverse influences led to the discovery of the phenomenon in 1880, and how they shaped its subsequent research until the consolidation of an empirical and theoretical knowledge of the field circa 1895. It studies a particular subdiscipline representative of many similar ‘mundane’ branches of physics that did not bear revolutionary consequences beyond their field. Although most research is of this kind, such branches have rarely been studied by historians of science. Shaul Katzir’s historical account shows that this mundane science was an intriguing intellectual and practical enterprise, which involved, among other things, originality, surprises and controversies. Thereby, it displays the fruitfulness of studying such a field.

Employing exceedingly rich material Katzir gains interesting insights into the nature of scientific development from this history. Among the themes raised here are: the sources of a discovery, the interplay between molecular-atomistic and phenomenological approaches and between scientific practice and protagonists’ philosophy of science, the role of thermodynamic formulation, the interaction of different levels of theories with experiment, the use and design of qualitative versus precise quantitative experiments, the employment of symmetry in physics and the role of national and local experimental and theoretical traditions. Observations regarding these and other issues in this book portray an unexpected picture of turn of the century physics.

                                            Book Description

With an ongoing international conference, Jewish humor in recent years has been a subject of serious scholarly inquiry. Most academic publications, however, have been individual works representing a particular thesis or viewpoint, generally on literary aspects. The present collection of essays by scholars from England, France, the United States, Denmark, Israel, and Australia explores characteristics of Jewish humor from a variety of perspectives, including anthropology, literature, psychology, sociology, and religion. Geographically, the work distinguishes between the Jewish humor of Israel and that of the diaspora; historically, it traces Jewish humor to the Bible. The linkages with Judaism and the Yiddish language are explored. Essays deal with the Jewish use of humor in stressful and tragic situations, with self-disparagement in Jewish humor, with anti-semitism and stereotyping, and with Jewish women as the objects of humor. The contributions to world culture of humorists Sholom Aleichem, Woody Allen, Philip Roth, Charlie Chaplin, and numerous contemporary performers are discussed as are the Jewish theorists of humor, including Sigmund Freud, Henri Bergson, and Arthur Koestler. An interdisciplinary book, it will be of interest to students and researchers of Jewish tradition and folklore, Jewish-American literature, American studies, and humor, popular culture, anthropology, psychology, and sociology.
