    Book Description

Central to this book is the idea that the United States is in the midst of a health care crisis, one that will be exacerbated as the population continues to age. Longino and Murphy trace the philosophical and technological development of the biomedical model and show its inadequacy to deal with the massive chronic disease demand of the present and the future. They argue that the delivery of health care will meet and survive the old age challenge only if the medical system is thoroughly democratized. A more inclusive system must be devised that encourages a more reasonable allocation of resources, gives more attention to prevention, adopts a wider range of non-medical interventions, and invites citizens to become more involved in their own health care and the planning of services.

The authors use postmodern theory, including the work of Foucault, Lyotard, Derrida, and Lacan, to advance a critique of current medical practice and develop an alternative, more democratic, version of health care. Contrary to some critics of postmodernism, this theory is illustrated to have radical political implications. Although some recent proposals show promise, Longino and Murphy use postmodernism to demonstrate how these health plans can be made more encompassing to represent real alternatives to the current system. In the end, the authors provide a truly revolutionary image of service delivery.

            Book Description

Aging is the progressive decline in biological functions over time. This decline targets macromolecules, cells, tissues and, as a consequence, whole organisms. Despite considerable progress in the development of testable hypothesis concerning aging in an evolutionary context, a unifying theory of the molecular/physiological mechanistic causes of aging has not been reached. In fact, is it not clear to what extent aging is a programmed or stochastic process.

This book takes the reader from unicellular bacterial deterioration via senescence in fungi and worms to aging in rodents and humans, allowing a comparative view on similarities and differences in different genetic model systems. The different model systems are scrutinized in the light of contemporary aging hypothesis, such as the free radical and genomic instability theories.

                    Description:
When too many failures occur on a given piece of equipment, the dependability engineer needs to decide whether these failures are attributable to poor initial design or if they are due to a phenomenon of aging. If aging is confirmed, the problem is then to determine the moment at which the process began and what corrective measure (generally, a modification in the design or in the preventive maintenance program) is the best suited to delay the occurrence of the failure. This measure will thus make it possible to extend the lifetime of the equipment. The method is based on the simple hypothesis of a model of step aging and on Bayesian techniques. The principal benefit of this method is the determination of the time at which aging begins (and the related uncertainties), the evolution in the failure rate of the component in its initial state and once modified, and the probability of success of the corrective measure. The IBTV software was developed to implement this methodology.

                        Book Description

The first reference of its kind in the rapidly emerging field of computational approachs to materials research, this is a compendium of perspective-providing and topical articles written to inform students and non-specialists of the current status and capabilities of modelling and simulation. From the standpoint of methodology, the development follows a multiscale approach with emphasis on electronic-structure, atomistic, and mesoscale methods, as well as mathematical analysis and rate processes. Basic models are treated across traditional disciplines, not only in the discussion of methods but also in chapters on crystal defects, microstructure, fluids, polymers and soft matter. Written by authors who are actively participating in the current development, this collection of 150 articles has the breadth and depth to be a major contributor toward defining the field of computational materials. In addition, there are 40 commentaries by highly respected researchers, presenting various views that should interest the future generations of the community. Book Description

Every material has an active presence and every material is susceptible to change. The task of the sculptor is to understand the natural properties of a chosen material, to know in the process of creation how best to work with, or against, its characteristics. In this generously illustrated studio manual, sculptor Oliver Andrews takes a new approach to sculpture, focusing on how the innate assertiveness of materials affects the complex act of making a sculpture.

                        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good, but dated.......2001-11-16

The good news is that this is probably the best book available on the materials of sculpture. The bad new is that it was written twenty years ago. (This paperback edition may have been published in 1988, but AFAIK, the text was unchanged from the original 1983 version.)

If you are interested in traditional forms, then this book probably covers everything you need. But if you want information on any materials and/or techniques that came into use post-1970's, you're out of luck. Plastics are a good example: urethane and silicone molding rubbers are given a cursory mention, even though they are quite common now. I don't think polyurethane casting resins (Por-a-kast, Poly 15, etc.) or polyurethane glues (Gorilla Glue, ProBond, etc.) are mentioned at all.

The wood section is surprisingly thin, with a bias toward subtractive methods (carving), even though wood construction is as common--if not more common--in contemporary work.

While there are plenty of photos (all black and white) of classic sculptures, there are a lot of unbelievably bad pieces illustrated--probably chosen for their materials rather than quality. Some are downright hideous.

This is a good resource, but be aware that it is no longer comprehensive.

5 out of 5 stars supurb book that covers both modern and antique materials.......1998-08-01

This is a supurb reference book for a working sculptor. It covers stone and wood carving, as well as most major 20th century materials, from plastics to masonry to metal fabrication techniques. Nothing on fabrics or paper though. The illustrations are exciting and fairly thorough, with an emphasis is on innovative work. This is the one book I would want to take with me if shipwrecked on a desert island!

                            Book Description

This is a unique book related to the theory of functions of a-bounded type in the half-plane of the complex plane, which is constructed by application of the Liouville integro-differential operator.

In addition, the book contains improvements of several results such as the Phragmen-Lindelof Principle and Nevanlinna Factorization in the Half-Plane, and offers a new, equivalent definition of the classical Hardy spaces in the half-plane.

The last chapter of the book presents an application of the constructed theory as well as M.M.Djrbashian’s theory of Nevanlinna type classes in the disc in the spectral theory of linear operators. This is a solution of a problem repeatedly stated by M.G.Krein and being of special interest for a long time.

from this author!! This was an excellent book! I'll be the first to admit that I was a little skeptical on reading Flipside books since I am a true Chicklit person This book is only the beginning for me. I am hooked! I bet that everyone will enjoy this battle of the sexes storyline with a twist!

5 out of 5 stars Five Prada Bag Rating!.......2004-07-06

The Flipside imprint won't contain this author for long. I sense a Chick Lit diva in the making here. Great wit. Very clever dialogue. Acerbic edge to the writing suggests the author could up the edginess factor if given the chance in a bigger book. Maybe that's why the ending seemed a bit squashed in and happy-ever-after. It's like she was just getting her stride and hey no more pages left. Also loved the cut-out doll cover. I'll buy anything with a free cut-out doll!

As her thirtieth birthday is on the horizon and reflecting back on high school pal Ron Bernstein, Lou Bergman pledges to turn from boringly dependable to a capital I interesting person that everyone will want to meet. She establishes a plan with specific goals to achieve starting with changing jobs from wedding videographer to screenwriter. Finally, she will leave behind her boringly dependable friends especially her old reliable nemesis Havajava Café owner Jake Roth to achieve her one-year objective of becoming the queen of the in crowd.

The only problems with her scenario is that Lou likes the friends she plans to leave behind and fears never seeing her opponent Jake again. To Jake, Lou is already the most enthralling person in the universe as he loves her and has an agenda of his own to finally win her heart starting with a wager they make over Columbian coffee that she will realize in one year how good it really was.

Though the ending reads right out of a happy ending to a Hollywood script, fans of contemporary romance will enjoy this often amusing and witty battle of the sexes. The interesting story line entertains readers as Lou thinks she knows what she wants while Jake does know what he wants so that the bet is even more interesting to follow. Readers will gain plenty of pleasure as Lou learns what really is interesting with a capital L.
