This is a suitably vast book for a vast subject. It covers every aspect of the application of human genetics to medicine, and the reviews are not only an ideal introduction to a genetic disease, but are heavily referenced as well. This makes it ideal as a guide to the most recent literature on the subject. The introductory chapters are essential reading as well.

4 out of 5 stars Chromatin Structure and Function:.......2000-01-18

Overall this is a good book, considering the fact that chromatin structure and function is such a broad subject. It is very comprehensive, and I liked that about it. It has a definite bias in favour of chromatin STRUCTURE rather than function. It tends to deal mainly with chromatin at the molecular level rather than at the chromosome level. I would have preferred more information about chromosomes, centromeres, telomeres, and position effects. But the book is certainly not lacking on information about chromatin organization proteins and transcription factors. One drawback for me personally was the way the book was organized. It is not organized into bedtime reading 'bite-sized' CHAPTERS the way I like my books to be. It is instead organized into one long monologue, punctuated only by subsections (subsection 1.2.1.1, subsection 2.1.1.1...etc. as if we don't get enough of that in research papers!). The book tends to be a bit DULL for my taste, but it is certainly a good way to get 'up to speed' in the chromatin field. Greg Doheny (Vancouver B.C.)

5 out of 5 stars well written and up to date.......1999-03-29

In a fast-moving field such as chromatin structure and function, one is usually better off reading journal articles than trying to gain a background by reading a text. This is not the case with Dr. Wolffe's book, Chromatin: Structure and Function. The book covers the background and then forges into new and interesting data.

I was required to buy this book for a class, and was originally resentful of the cost, but now I keep it in lab and find myself consulting it every once in a while. The explanations are clear, the diagrammes informative, and the science is good.

            Book Description

The main focus of this book is the study of environmental dynamics in the Arctic, coupled with ecosystem dynamics. Particular emphasis is placed on problems of the composition of the Arctic atmosphere, including minor gases, aerosols and clouds, as well as changes in the composition due to impacts of human activity. Analysis of observational data and numerical modelling results, which characterize the Arctic basin pollution dynamics, and its impact on ecosystems is also provided. Other topics covered include problems of general circulation in the atmosphere and oceans - beginning with the 1930s when the Arctic was regarded as the kitchen of global weather and climate and concluding with the situation today when modern observational data and numerical modelling make for a more balanced view.

              Book Description

The development of new experimental techniques to study phenomena, such as the anomalous skin effect, cyclotron resonance in magnetic fields normal to then metal surface, and high-frequency properties of metals, as well as the discovery of collective excitations arising from electron-electron correlations, have offered a new impetus for the analysis of the electronic properties of metals. This book discusses the local geometry of the Fermi surface and its effects on high-frequency phenomena in metals and metallic conductors. After an introductory chapter reviewing the electron-liquid theory of metals the discussion turns to techniques useful in analyzing properties of real Fermi surfaces, which are rarely spherical. In subsequent chapters these techniques are applied to concrete problems such as the anomalous skin effect, cyclotron resonance, attenuation of ultrasonic fields, dopplerons, the effects of zero-curvature portions of the Fermi surface, and the behavior of the Fermi surface in low-dimensional structures.

              Book Description

What do you get when an ex-NASA engineer and statistician turned bestselling how-to-writer decides to move aboard a boat? The Liveaboard Report, a statistical analysis filled with bar charts and pie graphs that quantifies what works and what doesn't for a representative sampling of liveaboard boaters. Charlie Wing interviewed 71 liveaboards of all sorts, and asked them 400 questions about what most aspiring liveaboards want to know: What does it cost? What boat should I get? Is refrigeration worth the hassle? What anchor works best? This book is different from other liveaboard guides. This author doesn't say, "Listen up--I am an expert, and this is the way to do it." Instead, he says "I asked this question of 71 crews with 277 collective years' experience living aboard. Three percent said X, 20 percent said Y, and 77 percent said Z. Let that be your guide."

Interesting, if you are an economist or if you operate like Bill Clinton and base each decision on an opinion poll. Hurry, someone take this guy's graph program away.

2 out of 5 stars Why didn't you tell me?.......2005-07-27

It would have been nice to know that this book had zero zip snot to do with power boats before I bought it. Also, I find the author's info a bit suspect when he says he talked to one owner of a 42 foot power boat who spent $13000.00 a month on maintenance alone and based his entire decision not to include anything but sail boats based on this one interview.

What the author does have is a love for bar and pie charts with a few actual graphs thrown in to break up the (intense) monotony. The problem is that none of them are in color so in some cases you have to try to differentiate between two shades of black. Had I picked this book up in a store I would have politely put it back on the shelf.

The information is way out of date. One referance states that people were waiting for GPS units to drop below $1000!!! And the same section talks about the growing number of people who were getting a VCR.

1 out of 5 stars Methinks this book was written only to generate money for the author.......2005-07-16

I'm truly sorry I bought this book. Filled with worthless information(?).

3 out of 5 stars Useful, but becoming out of date........2004-06-16

I brought this book to assist me in choosing a design for a cruising yacht, and found much useful material.
However some of the material is now dated (1992?), and the surveys appear to have been restricted to the Intercoastal Waterway and near Caribean islands.
A modern update would be appreciated.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for equipment choices.......2003-11-23

A couple weeks ago I finished reading Charlie Wing's "The Liveaboard Report / A Boat Dweller's Guide to What Works and What Doesn't". In it he interviews 71 sail-boaters -- these are cruisers for the most part, and not your weekend-warrior racer types.

Anyway, the author provides pie charts and bar graphs of the responses for a gazillion questions a beginner might have. The premise was, what would he (CW) like to know before investing in various systems and goodies. What works so to speak, planned for improvements, along with what they would change if money were no object. I found it interesting. It also had a small section on budgeting/budgets.

One thing which struck me (and he) was that of those with refrigeration, those with engine driven systems were not happy. The problem (if memory serves me) is that folks aren't real pleased to run their engine for an hour a day to charge the system, and cruisers with other power sources for their units were more satisfied.

You know, I too have read those wonderful stats of the engine driven units... but I don't know that running an engine (wear and tear) for an hour a day is going to make me a happy cruiser. It's the 'little things' -- my budget will be limited, therefore it is critical that I learn as much as possible pre-purchase so my choices can be wiser, one hopes! ;)

You might consider the book... it opened my eyes. For instance, we read so much about SSBs and the like, but in the book, universally VHF was aboard -- and not so much the SSB. I'm going to take another look through my copy this evening (taking notes) and then upload it to my website.

"The Liveaboard Report" is worth a look, though I don't know if I'd want to keep it aboard. It's more a Guide for good decision-making rather than a book you'd need forever.

This charming book sails away from the typical photographic tours found in most houseboat books, focusing instead on the stories of the enchanting people who dwell by the docks. Undoubtedly, Seattle’s Lake Union is a stunningly beautiful area. But it is the marvelous mishmash of freshwater folks and the unique community they create that makes living off-land so intriguing.

Fun read. Soul deep stories of common folks who share a lifestyle of living in floating houses. Not about living on boats. Not an instruction on living on a boat, nor was it intended to be. Wonderful read. Nice peek into the soul of humanity. Also revealing the greed of the realestate industry and intolerance of any lifestyle out of the ordinary.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of history, but not a how-to.......2005-11-01

This book focuses on the stories of the people who live aboard floating houses (very few boats) on Lake Union in Seattle. Lots about their history, a little about what it's like to live aboard a boat, but not very useful to someone (like myself) interesting in what it's like to live aboard a boat (a houseboat is more like a little house, complete with rooms and insulation and plumbing and suchlike).

For what it is, it's enjoyable (although more pictures to illustrate the stories would have been nice).

                      Book Description

Ever dream of having your own boat and living aboard? Just cutting your ties to the humdrum existence, the "same old, same old" that land dwelling represents? The Liveaboards is a contemporary fiction romance about people who are adventuresome or persistent or desperate enough to be genuine liveaboards, people who float endlessly with no home on land.

But even liveaboards must have a place to access water and power and fuel. And that place is a marina. At Sunset Marina on Lake Guntersville in northern Alabama, the boating neighborhood is intimate and yet ever changing.

Sunset Marina offers sanctuary to an eclectic mix of people who live there for myriad reasons in all sorts of crafts. Locally grown Southerners tolerate living inches from "damn Yankees" (those who won't go home) all for the love of boats. Although they are not completely isolated from the problems of the greater society, such as crystal methamphetamine, they can escape them for days into isolated coves.

And love? Well, love is the same on land or on water. Or maybe not. Some liveaboards think they can create their very own "Love Boat." Who knows?

                          Book Description

Genuine liveaboards own no land-based property, no escape to firm ground when life gets rough, and so they depend upon a marina home for water, electricity, fuel, and safety. Sunset Marina is a contemporary fiction romance/mystery about people who are genuine liveaboards on Lake Guntersville in northern Alabama.

Many dream about living on a boat, cutting some of those ties to land and simplifying their lives. Some are just water people by nature and feel best when they are afloat. Some think this would be a great way to spend their retirement years.

But few people really do it, and fewer still may be able to in the future. Marinas and marina dwellers everywhere are under attack as shoreline property goes the way of millionaire mansions and high-rise condos, hurricanes drive up insurance rates, energy costs rise, and more and more restrictions impact the liveaboard way of life.

When one of the Sunset Marina owners drowns under suspicious circumstances, several lives change dramatically, and as diverse as they are culturally, educationally and economically, the liveaboards work together to help the most helpless.

And is justice done at the end? It's a mystery.

                            Product Description

TRAVELS WITH YETI takes you along on the journeys of an adventurous New England couple who set out to challenge the unknowns of living on a sailboat and traveling in foreign lands. For five years, Hiram and Helen Connell lived their dreams aboard a 36-foot sailboat, navigating waters from Maine to the Caribbean, to Trinidad, to Venezuela, Colombia, Panama and back. Their story describes in close detail the what's, how's and why's of all they encountered - of life aboard, dangers at sea and the mechanical, meteorological and cultural challenges they experienced on a daily basis, all from the humble perspective of mere mortals. Over two hundred color photographs document these journeys to lands of lush palms and piratical bureaucrats, new and soon-to-be old friends, adventure and misadventure, lessons learned and lessons shared. Hitch a ride as a stowaway on Hiram and Helen's two amazing voyages to Paradise and back again.

Good Old Boat Newsletter June 2007

Here is the story of an enthusiastic sailing couple and their five-year wander down the Atlantic Coast and through the Caribbean to Venezuela and back. You get the complete story, starting from their very first dinghy sail to the final, sale of Yeti, the sailboat that entwined their lives over so many years. It would be a character-building read for those who have been tempted to do something similar; your heart will warm toward an author who spares us no details about the mistakes he makes along the way to becoming a seasoned cruiser. And there are some exciting descriptions of sailing in rough weather, including what it is like to have your mainsail split by high winds while in the middle of the ocean.

There are odd characters met on the beach, odd goings-on in strange boats in the middle of the night, the great (and miserable) food, and the frustrating encounters with local Caribbean police and customs officers. There are brief descriptions of islands and anchorages and lots of judgments about good ports-of-call plus some details about those a person might want to avoid. And while there was probably too much on dealing with engine problems, it was comforting to learn that other people also had these things happen to them at the worst possible time.

While the book is worthwhile, it sometimes can't seem to make up its mind whether it wants to be a cruising guide or a memoir of a wonderful cruise of a lifetime. An author probably can't do both in the same book, so it's sometimes a bit short on both counts. The details about anchoring and navigation aren't sufficient and there often is not enough about the people and their stories. One missing detail: while Hiram Connell's wife, Helen, was an integral part of this adventure, I feel like I know almost nothing about her. Of course, he gives her heartfelt acknowledgments along the way but I wish he'd also given her a voice.

Other things could have been left out -- perhaps half of the pictures and almost all of the editorial asides on the politics, the poverty and the graft in third-world countries. I suspect most readers know those facts already.

But there were some nice stories in the book: the spontaneous operatic concert in the Puerto Rico restaurant, the 25th wedding anniversary on some isolated island, the evening with Earl and the poetry and the waltzing. Yes, yes, author, give us more!
