    Book Description

Louisville is one of the overlooked gems of American architecture, a city of Southern charm and grace with a catalog of buildings by such masters as K.H. Burnham, Bruce Goff, and Herb Greene. An important destination for people interested in everything from colonial to postmodern architecture, this riverfront city is historically rich, while being beautifully planned with a boulevard and park system designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.
The Louisville Guide takes readers on a journey through the city, describing its most notable buildings while providing a complete overview of its architectural history. Essays by Louisville scholars Grady Clay and Edie Bingham add color and life to the story of the city and its makers. From Carrere and Hastings's Memorial Hall to Michael Graves's Humana Building, The Louisville Guide offers visitors and residents alike never-before published scholarship of the city's rich architectural heritage.

    5 out of 5 stars I am Bob Bahr's nephew, no JOKE!.......2003-11-08

I am Bob Bahr's nephew and go to college at WKU. He is my dad's brother. No kidding. I have lived in louisville all my life. And I am here to tell you that this book has it all. Everything inside of it is all true, and the best part, the amazement of this woderful city of Louisville is caputured in the simplest ways. All suggestions that are made in this book come from many interviews and suggestions from experts. The advice on golf courses comes from my uncle jim. My uncle jim's wife is the sister of my dad and bob. And my uncle played golf for bellermine university and is an avid golfer, so the insight he offers is well worth reading. This book was written very well. And although Bob Bahr is my uncle, and you think i am just saying this cause he is my uncle, you are wrong. i would tell you if it was bad. But it's not, it is worth your money. So if you visit Louisville, pick this book up, and enjoy Derby City!!!!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!.......2001-08-23

Just go back from Louisville and used this book for EVERYTHING! Three years after it was published I was still able to use it to cram so much into my visit. I planned visits to historical sites, restaurants and points of interest every day with this guide. Two things you have to do when buying this edition is buy a good city map and call to make sure whatever restaurant you want to go to is still in business (only happened once). Louisville has so much to offer, great food, fun and so much history (2nd only to Boston for the number of historical sites). If you don't have a guide you will miss so many things!

4 out of 5 stars A Friendly Way to Discover Louisville.......2000-04-12

James Nold and Bob Bahr's "The Insiders' Guide to Louisville" is crammed with interesting, honest and friendly information about the city they both love and call home. From restuarants to spectator sports, from nightlife to real estate, these authors offer an wonderfully imformative introduction to Louisville. On every couple of pages, they include "Insider Tips" to add personal advice to their guide book.

I was a little disapointed with the lack of maps. I would have liked to see numbered maps corresponding to the venues and places they discussed. So, if you are using this as your only guide, buy a city map, too!

On the whole, however, this is a knowledgable guide book filled with clear advice.

If you've ever had trouble deciding where to go for breakfast or brunch in the Denver area, this guide will help. Restaurants are listed alphabetically with information about children's menu, handicapped access, patio dining, as well as breakfast hours and the parking situation. If they have a website, it's listed, too, along with an occasional pithy comment by the author. If you tend to get lost around Denver, there's even an index of restaurants for each part of town and the suburbs.

                        Book Description

This book is the first to be published in a series of volumes that will bring the expertise of archaeologists and other scholars to bear on the interpretation of the Minoan and Greek site at Kommos. A seaside town, Kommos provides rich information on domestic architecture, the daily life and economy of a coastal people, and ceramic sequences, which, thanks to the long and undisturbed stratigraphy, are already playing a fundamental role in defining ceramic chronology here and elsewhere in Crete. Kommos also functioned as the harbor town of inland Phaistos. Illuminating its prosperity and commercial role in the Aegean are monumental buildings south of the town and foreign, imported pottery from a widespread area: Egypt, the Near East, and even from the area of Italy. In a second major era of use, long after the Minoans left, Kommos served as the location for a Greek Sanctuary with a series of temples, interesting votive offerings, evidence for ritual activity, and, again, foreign contacts. The basic publication of the Final Neolithic, Early Minoan, and Middle Minoan pottery from the site, Volume II of Kommos presents the pottery from the first decade of excavation. Only small quantities of pottery were found from the period before Middle Minoan IB, but a continuous sequence exists from MM IB until Transitional MM III/LM IA, providing the first stratigraphic evidence for the complete sequence of pottery styles from these periods in southern Crete.

                                  Book Description

An in-depth study of the Late Minoan IA cross-draft kiln found in excavation at Kommos, Crete. The kiln is of a type popular during the Neopalatial period and its good state of preservation has allowed the authors to speculate about its original internal layout and use as well as about the roof that covered it. Much of the large quantity of obviously locally produced pottery found associated with the kiln is analyzed in detail, allowing for the first time the study of the shapes, decoration, and technical characteristics of vases known to have been fired in a specific LM IA kiln. The book presents an integrated program of analytical techniques used both to illustrate the range of firing temperatures, the compositional similarities and differences in the clay used, and aspects of the firing process and to make suggestions about the upper kiln structure. Offered here is a valuable contribution to our knowledge of their technology and organization of ceramic production at the beginning of the Late Minoan period, which will form a basis for studies of pottery provenience and exchange.

                                          Book Description

Most of the world's freshwater resources in the liquid state (i.e. not in glaciers and polar caps) are underground. As the population grows and demand for water rises, reliance on groundwater increases. In many cases the groundwater underlies boundaries, or is part of a hydraulic system that crosses boundaries. In such cases there is always the danger that the 'prisoner's dilemma' will run its course and all parties will compete over who will pump the most water, ultimately destroying the storage potential to the detriment of future generations of all parties reliant on the groundwater. This book explores the options and means for averting this all too realistic scenario by managing these shared groundwater resources. Nowhere is the likelihood of excessive use of groundwater greater than in the water-scarce Middle East, and especially in the Israeli-Palestinian case. Here both sides are heavily reliant on a shared aquifer, the Mountain aquifer. This book is the outcome of a seven-year effort to find ways to manage the Mountain aquifer, perhaps the most important resource shared by Israelis and Palestinians. As part of this cooperative study, four workshops were held in which a selected number of Palestinian, Israeli, and foreign experts were invited. The chapters in this book were originally presented in one of these workshops. To these papers introductory and concluding chapters were added.

                                            Book Description

For their supply of freshwater, both Palestinians and Israelis rely heavily on underground aquifers beneath Israel and the Palestinians territories. These aquifers are at the heart of ongoing negotiations between Palestine and Israel, as water is often alluded to as a major obstacle to peace. This book presents a framework for the joint management of shared aquifers, with specific reference and proposals for the major Israeli-Palestinian case: the Mountain Aquifer. It is the first book to explicitly address the issue of cross-border groundwater management, an issue that is increasingly becoming a focal point of discussions at both the international and cross-jurisdictional levels. It is also the first book to focus on groundwater resources in the Israeli-Palestinian context; groundwater being the most difficult question facing water negotiators in the Middle East today.
