A Friendly Way to Discover Louisville.......2000-04-12
I was a little disapointed with the lack of maps. I would have liked to see numbered maps corresponding to the venues and places they discussed. So, if you are using this as your only guide, buy a city map, too!
On the whole, however, this is a knowledgable guide book filled with clear advice.

Kommos: An Excavation of the South Coast of Crete : The Final Neolithic Through Middle Minoan III Pottery (Kommos: An Excavation of the South Coast of Crete)

ASIN: 0691035946 |
Book Description
This book is the first to be published in a series of volumes that will bring the expertise of archaeologists and other scholars to bear on the interpretation of the Minoan and Greek site at Kommos. A seaside town, Kommos provides rich information on domestic architecture, the daily life and economy of a coastal people, and ceramic sequences, which, thanks to the long and undisturbed stratigraphy, are already playing a fundamental role in defining ceramic chronology here and elsewhere in Crete. Kommos also functioned as the harbor town of inland Phaistos. Illuminating its prosperity and commercial role in the Aegean are monumental buildings south of the town and foreign, imported pottery from a widespread area: Egypt, the Near East, and even from the area of Italy. In a second major era of use, long after the Minoans left, Kommos served as the location for a Greek Sanctuary with a series of temples, interesting votive offerings, evidence for ritual activity, and, again, foreign contacts. The basic publication of the Final Neolithic, Early Minoan, and Middle Minoan pottery from the site, Volume II of Kommos presents the pottery from the first decade of excavation. Only small quantities of pottery were found from the period before Middle Minoan IB, but a continuous sequence exists from MM IB until Transitional MM III/LM IA, providing the first stratigraphic evidence for the complete sequence of pottery styles from these periods in southern Crete.

A Lm Ia Ceramic Kiln in South-Central Crete: Function and Pottery Production (Hesperia Supplement)
Aleydis Van De Moortel , Peter M. Day , and Vassilis Kilikaglou Manufacturer: American School of Classical Studies at Athen ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0876615302 |
Book Description
An in-depth study of the Late Minoan IA cross-draft kiln found in excavation at Kommos, Crete. The kiln is of a type popular during the Neopalatial period and its good state of preservation has allowed the authors to speculate about its original internal layout and use as well as about the roof that covered it. Much of the large quantity of obviously locally produced pottery found associated with the kiln is analyzed in detail, allowing for the first time the study of the shapes, decoration, and technical characteristics of vases known to have been fired in a specific LM IA kiln. The book presents an integrated program of analytical techniques used both to illustrate the range of firing temperatures, the compositional similarities and differences in the clay used, and aspects of the firing process and to make suggestions about the upper kiln structure. Offered here is a valuable contribution to our knowledge of their technology and organization of ceramic production at the beginning of the Late Minoan period, which will form a basis for studies of pottery provenience and exchange.

Management of Shared Groundwater Resources - The Israeli-Palestinian Case with an International Perspective (Natural Resource Management and Policy, Volume 18)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792372549 |
Book Description
Most of the world's freshwater resources in the liquid state (i.e. not in glaciers and polar caps) are underground. As the population grows and demand for water rises, reliance on groundwater increases. In many cases the groundwater underlies boundaries, or is part of a hydraulic system that crosses boundaries. In such cases there is always the danger that the 'prisoner's dilemma' will run its course and all parties will compete over who will pump the most water, ultimately destroying the storage potential to the detriment of future generations of all parties reliant on the groundwater. This book explores the options and means for averting this all too realistic scenario by managing these shared groundwater resources. Nowhere is the likelihood of excessive use of groundwater greater than in the water-scarce Middle East, and especially in the Israeli-Palestinian case. Here both sides are heavily reliant on a shared aquifer, the Mountain aquifer. This book is the outcome of a seven-year effort to find ways to manage the Mountain aquifer, perhaps the most important resource shared by Israelis and Palestinians. As part of this cooperative study, four workshops were held in which a selected number of Palestinian, Israeli, and foreign experts were invited. The chapters in this book were originally presented in one of these workshops. To these papers introductory and concluding chapters were added.

Management of Shared Groundwater Resources: The Israeli-Palestinian Case with International Perspective
Manufacturer: IDRC Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0889369127 |
Book Description
For their supply of freshwater, both Palestinians and Israelis rely heavily on underground aquifers beneath Israel and the Palestinians territories. These aquifers are at the heart of ongoing negotiations between Palestine and Israel, as water is often alluded to as a major obstacle to peace. This book presents a framework for the joint management of shared aquifers, with specific reference and proposals for the major Israeli-Palestinian case: the Mountain Aquifer. It is the first book to explicitly address the issue of cross-border groundwater management, an issue that is increasingly becoming a focal point of discussions at both the international and cross-jurisdictional levels. It is also the first book to focus on groundwater resources in the Israeli-Palestinian context; groundwater being the most difficult question facing water negotiators in the Middle East today.Books:
