      Book Description

Ice Sheets and Late Quaternary Environmental Change provides a detailed account of the temporal and spatial distribution of ice sheets during the last ice age, and how these ice masses interacted with the environment. This is the first book in 20 years to detail the sizes of ice sheets during the last glaciation and the first to discuss their role in past climate change.
Arranged in two parts, the first part provides the tools required for evaluating past ice sheets while the second part uses these tools to establish the size, extent and dynamics of late Quaternary ice sheets. Assuming no prior knowledge of Quaternary Science, the discussion progresses from the basic principles of how and why ices ages occur, to the interpretation of proxy records of past climate and ocean change.
Instructive accounts of how the geological record can be used as evidence of former ice sheet behaviour and a discussion on the role of numerical models in understanding interaction between ice sheets, oceans and the atmosphere are included in this book. Details of former ice sheets are presented by geographical region along with a number of critical new theories on their size and behaviour.
This book would appeal to 2nd/3rd year students of Quaternary Science, most University Geography, Earth Science or Geology departments, as well as researchers and academics in Quaternary Science.

          Book Description

This work will be a comprehensive multidisciplinary discussion of the applications of satellite remote sensing - advanced ground-based remote sensing, as both are related to polar science and operations. Discussion is provided on the various passive and active remote sensor types in sufficient detail to be self-contained, with numerous references for further reading. Subsequent chapters will be devoted to specific geophysical applications, including principles of retrieval algorithms, with brief reviews of major remote sensing advances and publications in each discipline. Also included will be a review of the current state of the science in each discipline. The final chapters will address current satellite data availability, and the use of satellite data in support of expeditions and field operations.

            Book Description

The first book on the subject, this monograph examines the phenomenon of a huge sealed, freshwater lake, isolated from the rest of the world by kilometers' thick ice. The existence of melting ice at the bottom of the huge Vostok Lake has served as a model and inspired the team planning the Galileo space craft to gather data on the ice sheet of the Jupiterian moon Europa. The book provides interpretation of, and calculations for, stimulating factors for possible melting and a huge lake's existence at the bottom of the Martian ice sheets.

            Book Description

Glacial Geology: Ice Sheets and Landforms provides a modern, comprehensive summary of glacial geology. It is presented in a clear and concise format, which is not cluttered with unnecessary detail. During the Late Cenozoic period much of the northern hemisphere was extensively glaciated. This had a profound effect on the nature of the landscape. In order to understand this landscape one must be able to identify and interpret the glacial landforms and sediments from which it is composed. These landforms and sediments tell a unique part of the story of the Cenozoic Ice Age. This book is about these landforms and sediments and provides the reader with the tools with which to interpret them. It shows how glaciers work and how the processes of glacial erosion and deposition which operate within them are recorded in the glacial landscape.

I bought this book for a class this semester. The first minute I opened the book I was intrigued with all the tables, figures and pictures aside from all of the other information that makes this book a great tool in my glacial geology class. I'd advise this book for any geology student who wants to add to their unending libraries of college textbooks.

                Book Description

Volume 2 is a companion to Volume 1. It is a comprehensive description of satellite remote sensing applications to all aspects of polar glaciology, including not only ice sheets but also icebergs and interactions between ice sheets and the atmosphere and the ocean. It also includes a chapter on the important new field of satellite synthetic-aperture rader interfermetry. There should be something of interest to most polar researchers and those interested in climate research. As in Volume 1, Volume 2 includes a review of the current state of each discipline, including current questions and issues and related suggestions for research applications of satellite remote sensing. There are many satellite remote sensing texts available, but very few are specifically tailored to, or even contain significant information on the Earth's polar regions. The text is sufficiently comprehensive to summarize fundamental principles of detectors, imaging and geophysical product retrieval, in three dedicated chapters. In effect, the text serves as much as possible as a "one stop shop" for polar remote sensing information. As with Volume 1, the book is extensively referenced, and in an up-to-date fashion. In addition to purely scientific applications, the book also discusses practical and operational issues, such as how polar satellite data can be obtained and how they can be used in expedition planning and logistics. This book is up to date, covering applications of both "heritage" (multi-decadal) remote sensing time series, and new applications from NASA Earth Observing System and similar sensors launched since the year 2000. It also covers future missions.

                  Book Description

Although it is generally understood that the Antarctic Ice Sheet plays a critical role in the changing global system, to date there is a general lack of readily available information on the subject. The Atlas of Antarctica is the first atlas on the seventh continent to be published in 20 years. It contains 145 accurate topographic and elevation maps derived from satellite data (GEOSAT and ERS-1 radar altimeter data), which are the best of their kind available today. Each map is accompanied by a description of geographic and glaciological features.

The introductory chapters familiarise the reader with the world of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and its role in the global system, as well as discussing satellite remote sensing and geo-statistical methods at textbook level. Applications include detailed regional studies of 15 outlet glaciers of the inland ice, some of which are currently changing rapidly. Combinations with SAR data facilitate the study of surface structures and flow features.

Despite its state-of-the-art scientific accuracy, the Atlas of Antarctica is not only intended for use by researchers and students in glaciology, geophysics, remote sensing, cartography and Antarctic research, but also informative and enjoyable for any reader interested in the seventh continent. The Atlas is accompanied by a CD-ROM containing all the atlas maps and elevation models – enabling the reader to discover a wealth of fascinating details in Antarctica!

                    Book Description

This multi-author work reviews our current knowledge of the isotopic and temperature profiles of polar ice sheets. The polar ice sheets contain a wonderfully detailed record of the atmospheric history of the Earth that extends back for hundreds of thousands of years. This book is the result of a workshop held at the Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge. The review includes the glacial geology and glaciology of ice sheets; measurement and significance of glaciological parameters; temperature, isotopic and gas content profiles; and the climatic record from ice cores. The results presented in this volume will be of particular interest to glaciologists and climatologists.

                      Book Description

Uncovering CP Violation deals with one of the crucial ingredients necessary to create the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe. There is one force in nature which acts differently on matter and antimatter. This phenomenon was discovered in decays of neutral K mesons in 1964. In a long series of ever refined experiments between 1964 and 2001, it was shown that this force emerges as a part of the weak interaction between quarks ("direct CP violation"). It is due to flavor mixing of three quark families. This picture was confirmed by experiments on neutral B mesons, which also demonstrated CP violation in 2001. The book describes the experiments that uncovered the nature of CP violation and the phenomenology describing CP violation. The author Konrad Kleinknecht received the Leibniz award of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft 1990 and the Gentner-Kastler prize and medal of SFP and DPG 2001.

                        Book Description

                        Sarah Kelling/Max Bittersohn series

Sarah Kelling and her art detective husband, Max Bittersohn, have joined the rest of the Kelling clan to plan a charity auction for the senior citizens' recycling center. All goes smoothly until tea is served. What Cousin Theonia sees in the leaves causes her to hurl her antique cup against the wall. Theonia's forebodings prove correct. Before the big event, one of the Center's members is murdered and an examination of the will points the finger of suspicion at the Kellings. An irritating reporter appears and a seedy individual involved in an old family scandal reappears. Then, another corpse pops up in the gardening shed on the night of the ball. Once again, Max is enlisted in the task of bailing out the Kellings.
