    Book Description

The expanding use of decentralized wastewater management has resulted in an increased interest in small-scale wetland treatment systems. However, there is limited information available on the use, distribution of and performance of these small-scale systems. The purpose of this study was to address this knowledge gap by developing criteria for the feasibility, design, operation, and maintenance of small-scale wetland treatment systems. Information on 1,789 existing small-scale wetland treatment systems in 19 countries was collected. This data indicates that 81% of small-scale constructed wetlands use subsurface flow. The median size range for free water surface (FWS) wetlands was 389 m^3/day (103,000 gpd), while for vegetated submerged bed (VSB) wetlands it was only 2.6 m^3/day (687 gpd). Monitoring data from the assembled small-scale wetland database was used to develop sizing criteria for FWS and VSB wetlands. Loading rates and corresponding effluent quality were developed for BOD, TSS, TKN, phosphorus, and fecal coliform bacteria. Where there was adequate data, the variation in monthly vs. annual average effluent concentration was assessed to provide a factor-of-safety approach to wetland sizing. Information on internal processes, hydraulic design, operation, maintenance, cost, and industrial applications of constructed wetlands is also presented in this report.

        Book Description

Much of the convenience of modern life resides in sheet metal, the cowling shield of most machines and appliances. However, the load that this takes off human shoulders has to be carried elsewhere, and the Earth has borne the burden. Many of us woke up to the environmental cost when over a century of industrialization finally surpassed the capacity of nature to assimilate it. International in scope, Heavy Metals in the Environment: Using Wetlands for Their Removal discusses wetland functions and heavy metal contamination. It addresses such questions as: Can systems powered by sunlight handle toxins more effectively than systems running on fossil fuel? At what scale and by what means do we define efficiency? These questions resonate increasingly with a number of global challenges. As inescapable as climate change, you can no longer avoid airborne toxins, acid rain, and polluted water by moving away from them. When the time comes to rely less on fossil fuel-based technology, how will we clean up the aftermath of toxic misadventures? Written by a leader in the growing field of ecological engineering, Heavy Metals in the Environment: Using Wetlands for Their Removal presents scientific studies that illustrate how natural systems use wetlands to adapt to changes in the ecosystem. It focuses primarily on lead, one of the first materials used by developing civilizations and a metal used heavily in the industrial era. The goal: to achieve a better understanding of how natural systems use wetlands to adapt to wastes.

            Book Description

The 31 chapters provide a wealth of previously unpublished information, plus topic syntheses, for a wide range of ecological parameters. These include the physical driving forces that created and continue to shape the Everglades and patterns and processes of its flora and fauna. The book summarizes recent studies of the region's vegetation, alligators, wading birds, and endangered species such as the snail kite and Florida panther. This referee-reviewed volume is the product of collaboration among 58 international authors from 27 institutional affiliations over nearly five years. The book concludes with a synthesis of system-wide restoration hypotheses, as they apply to the Everglades, that represent the integration and a collective viewpoint from the preceding 30 chapters. Techniques and systems learned here can be applied to ecosystems around the world.

5 out of 5 stars Still the defining word on wetlands.......2001-03-23

As one of the authors of this book I would highly recommend it to anyone involved in Land Use decisions or Environmental Protection. The committee that authored this work travelled all over the United States and met with many of the leaders in the field of wetlands. We also agonized over language in numerous committee meetings. This book truly represents some of the best overview data on wetlands and should remain an important scientific work for many years to come.

Worth the price of purchase just to get the "real" definition of wetlands.

I have the utmost respect for all of my peers that also served on this committee and were co-authors of this important work and I hope to see their reviews here too.

                  Book Description

The new science of ecological engineering is winning increasing acceptance all over the world. Established industrial economies like Sweden and the United States are investing more in it as initial skepticism and regulatory hurdles are giving way to burgeoning investments by companies and municipalities, increased research activity, and great interest by the public. Less-developed countries are investigating inexpensive and effective ways to build their wastewater treatment infrastructure with ecological engineering. Eastern European countries and the former Soviet Union are turning to ecological engineering to solve their acute pollution problems. Ecological Engineering for Wastewater Treatment, Second Edition, presents comprehensive coverage of topics ranging from wastewater source separation at the household level to the use of huge, natural wetlands. It is an updated description of the state of the art, intended as a tool for teaching and inspiring the management of wastewater as a resource, one of the keys to sustainable development. In this Second Edition, existing chapters have been updated, new chapters have been added, and a comprehensive index has been added.

                  Book Description

Wetlands are crucial ecosystems that help filter a great number of toxicants out of the earth's waters. They must be managed and occasionally even built from scratch, including all of the flora and fauna that grows there. Invertebrates play a key role in the wetland food chain. This comprehensive resource is the first dedicated solely to the ecology and management of invertebrates.

                      Book Description

Students who have taken courses in vibration often get the impression that the course is too mathematical in nature and generally beyond their reach comprehension. Mechanical Vibration Practice with Basic Theory erases that impression. The book adopts an unconventional approach. It presents only those mathematical tools that are most appropriate for solving practical problems, and it emphasizes figures of significance in mechanical vibration. The material is confined to problems endemic in the mechanical engineering industry, and it includes computer programs that are used to solve complicated problems.

Los Beatles de la musica norteña. Se cuenta la historia de dos músicos norteños come se fueron John Lennon y Paul McCartney. Bién divertido y bién chistoso. (If you can read in Spanish "mas or menos bien" and like the Beatles, I would recommend this hilarious book, which tells the tale of two Mexican Norteño musicians as if they were John and Paul)
