The color photographs are very useful. This book is a good choice for the amateur. I know Abbott and Hollenberg is a standard, but many of us don't need such a comprehensive volume.

A unifying element that links the apparently diverse phenomena observed in optical processes is the dielectric dispersion of matter. It describes the response of matter to incoming electromagnetic waves and charged particles, and thus predicts their behavior in the self-induced field of matter, known as polariton and polaron effects. The energies of phonon, exciton and plasmon, quanta of collective motions of charged particles constituting the matter, are also governed by dielectric dispersion. Since the latter is a functional of the former, one can derive useful relations for their self-consistency. Nonlinear response to laser light inclusive of multiphoton processes, and excitation of atomic inner shells by synchrotron radiation, are also described. Within the configuration coordinate model, photo-induced lattice relaxation and chemical reaction are described equally to both ground and relaxed excited states, to provide a novel and global perspective on structural phase transitions and the nature of interatomic bonds.

This book for me is a "book of revealing semiconductor secrets" which includes good in-depth details of fundamental semiconductors that majority of semiconductor books, published in last 10-15 years do not include. Since it was written over 30 years or so back, it includes basic stuff, which is what your advisor or lecturer at university "expects" you to know or understand without a problem (of course in reality nothing is easy unless one knows about it and this book, I feel, does provides those basic answers :o)

A very elegant, eloquent text on its subject. Explains the major physical processes very clearly, without drowning you in tons of mathematics. The sheer clarity of Pankove's exposition is the greatest appeal of this book. After reading this, you may wish to go onto heftier tomes that delve into greater detail. But consider starting here.
While the text dates from 1976, its explanations of optical phenomena are still valid. Don't consider it outdated.

It's peculiar that the "from the Publisher" section mentions only Gail Simone and appears to be from 2002. Likewise, the byline I see right at this moment at the top of the page I am typing text into says, "Gail Simone".
Why should I care?
I am Lea Hernandez, the co-creator of this book, and also the artist. I am currently the artist for the Hardy Boys comic/graphic novel series for Papercutz. My previous work include Marvel Mangaverse Punisher, Rumble Girls (NBM 2004), Cathedral Child and Clockwork Angels (Cyberosia), and the forthcoming instructional book, Manga Secrets (North Light, Feb. 2005).
