Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2006-02-07

As the other reviews reflect, this is an absolutely essential addition to the PMBOK. My only complaint is it should be 200 Tips. I long ago templatized the PMBOK inputs and outputs; mostly in Excel, but when it comes to refinement and implementation I refresh from this book. It's about the perfect level of cookbook - not another 'how to', but a very good condensation of essential points.

I don't have time to re-invent, and feel like my time is better spent dealing with project issues than with project management process. This gives me warm and fuzzies that I've done the process right, and if I've missed something a good quick quide on how to fix it.

3 out of 5 stars A Reference Book, Not Tool Kit.......2005-09-12

This is a reference book based on PMBOK, with very concise summaries of project management processes. For example, the Project Charter is covered in two pages. It is not for novice project leaders as the book states. There are no examples or templates to show you how you can prepare your documents.

5 out of 5 stars A great reference work.......2004-05-06

This is a very useful reference work which delivers exactly what it promises: every tool in the project manager's toolkit is defined concisely and precisely. It was easy to find concepts and techniques which I could apply to current projects. The ability to cross-reference related tools and subject areas is particularly helpful. Perhaps most valuable for the experienced project manager are the detailed checklists which highlight issues to be considered and tasks to be performed when applying each tool.

5 out of 5 stars good practical techniques that really work.......2004-03-27

This book provides a great overview on proven techniques and approaches that really work. This is exactly what project managers are looking for after reading the PMBOK®! It shows the "how to ..." which is missing in the PMBOK®. The tools are easy to grasp, and the approach goes far beyond the pure technical and methodological stuff to the human side--which is the essential part in most projects

5 out of 5 stars Quick and Concise........2004-03-19

Excellent reference tool! Having practiced PM for over 20 years I know that, due to projects' unique elements, no project manager uses all their skills and tools all the time. This book is great to have to go to for a quick, easy to get to, no-nonsense refresher for those skills that may be a little rusty.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Helps me make cost-effective choices.......2006-02-22

I bought this book so that I would be able to purchase tools as gifts for my husband without having to ask him what to buy. I figured that would spoil any surprises. I know next to nothing about what to look for when purchasing tools, so this book has been an invaluable reference for me. It has definitely helped me make smart purchases and saved me money because the author does an excellent job of explaining the pros and cons of different tool choices. He also discusses and what to look for when selecting particular tools, so you know exactly what you want befor you make any purchases. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Handbook for New Supervisors!.......2003-07-07

This book was perfect for me- it's brief and straight to the point. The information is practical and is obviously generated from years of experience. I may tear a few pages out to keep in my back pocket as reminders.

4 out of 5 stars Experience Speaks..........2002-01-26

The management necessities are all there. Crittendon does an exceptional job of encapsulating the essentials of good managing practices. His casual, personable style of writing is refreshing, making this book a fast read and an easy study for the new manager who is always tight on time.
If only all management texts were written this way!
Of all the chapters in the book, one of the most vital is "Managing Your Reputation."
To a new manager, these seven points are an absolute must for establishing your credibility and your professional stature within the corporation, as well as the business community at large.
To the seasoned professional manager, a review of this chapter alone is enough to awaken a desire to re-dedicate ones self to an even higher performance level.
Crittendon's wholesome approach to the business of managing business, displays his own high sense of integrity--indeed, it comes through loud and clear in virtually every chapter of this book.
I am proud to say that, more than thirty years ago I worked, learned and prospered under Mr. Crittendon's enlightened guidance at his business alma mater, Beckman Instruments, Inc.
The values I learned there were essential to my own later successes.

5 out of 5 stars Lessons for Management and Life.......2001-11-09

This book provides an easy to read and down to earth series of important lessons for new and old managers alike. The best feature of this thoughful book is that these lessons are valid for business and everyday life. You can use the same lessons for managing your life just as easily as your career.
No lofty management theories here, just good useful infomration. I would recommend the book to all managers, since many times once we become involved in 'Management', we forget where we are headed and what is important. This books reminds us.
It is filled with good references and quotes that can be used in almost any situation. I finished the book in one sitting (OK it was long day...) and have referred to it several times. I have even quoted excerpts in other papers I've written recently.
If you enjoyed Stephen R. Coveys' "Seven Habits" book, this book I think is a good follow-up. It reinforces many of Coveys ideas, and provides the next step; how to go about actually implementing some of the 7 habits. This is a book every successful mamager needs to have in their reference library.
The first two sentences in the book set the tone: "The first rule is to arm yourself with a personal code of conduct. The second rule is to never break the first rule."

    Book Description

This volume examines scientific practice through studies of research tools in an array of twentieth-century life sciences. The contributors draw upon and extend the multidisciplinary perspectives in current science studies to understand the processes through which scientific researchers constructed the right--and, in some cases, the wrong--tools for the job. The articles portray the crafting or accessing of specific materials, techniques, instruments, models, funds, and work arrangements involved in doing scientific work. They demonstrate the historical and local contingencies of scientific problem construction and solving by highlighting the articulation between the tools and jobs. Indeed, the very "rightness" of the tools is contingently constructed, maintained, lost, and refashioned.

The cases examined include evolutionary biology laboratory systems (James R. Griesemer), the plasmid prep procedure in molecular biology (Kathleen Jordan and Michael Lynch), models in the human ecology of African pastoralists (Peter Taylor), the micromanometer in metabolic studies (Frederic L. Holmes), genetics research and the role played by Planaria (Gregg Mitman and Anne Fausto-Sterling) and by corn (Barbara A. Kimmelman), quantitative data in field biology (Yrj Haila), taxidermy in natural history (Susan Leigh Star), technical standardization in bacteriology (Patricia Peck Gossell), and the discipline of immunology as the tool for stabilizing conceptual definitions in the field (Peter Keating, Alberto Cambrosio, and Michael Mackenzie).

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......2007-05-02

I purchased several of the top woodworking books and I think this one is the best of the bunch. If I could keep only one, this would be it. It covers everything, even things as simple as the proper way to measure.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent reference.......2006-08-07

This book is invaluable! I've had this book for about a half year and I've returned to it time and time again to be sure I'm doing things right. My work shows it. I recommend this book to novice thru advanced woodworkers.

    5 out of 5 stars Essential Text.......2006-04-27

I bought this book awhile back and thought it was pretty good. Lately I have been attempting to refine and improve my woodwork efforts and I have come back to this book over most of the others I own. This is a cornerstone reference and I would put it in the same category as the Tage Frid series as well as some of the better Taunton Illustrated books. I would seek it out even though it appears out of print.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners and advanced woodworkers.......2002-12-29

The author does a great job of describing in detail just about every aspect of woodworking, from cutting to glueing to sharpening to finishing. There is a lot to cover and he does it very succinctly and with enough detail and various methods that the reader is given a LOT of ideas on how to go about any given project.

The hardcover is a beautiful book. Even if the content wasn't as good as it is, it is still a beautiful book to look at.

4 out of 5 stars excellent comparison of techniques.......2002-12-21

As a beginner woodworker, I was intrigued by the different techniques that I read in the magazines. For example, why was a box joint used on one of the projects while another project used a dado joint? This book did an excellent job of explaining the pros and cons of various joints, in addition to many other topics. It also has a good section on making several commonly used jigs. The writing and illustrations are all first rate.

After reading the book from cover to cover though, I had only wished that it would cover some additional topics critical to the success of a project, such as wood selection and finishing. Nonetheless, this is a must read for anyone who wants to know the why, not just the how, of woodworking techniques.

Two sets of related computer software are also available. One, the student/teacher set, consists of six 51/4 inch IBM/XT/AT-compatible floppy diskettes on which eight scenarios of dynamic computer graphics are recorded. The second, the ATRS research diskette, contains the 'ATRS' program, which runs numerical experiments with mappings: constructing their phase portraits at any specified level of detail, studying their dynamics, correlation properties and the dependence of the dynamics of the processes on the initial condition and mapping coefficients.
This unique book brings together the basic ideas of nonlinear theory essential for all branches of physics, including mechanics of continuous media, optics, radiophysics, solid state physics and plasma physics. The authors restrict the use of lengthy calculations to examples, and present the material in an informal style, based on qualitative analysis and physical estimates. Written by three pioneers in the field on nonlinear ph

                    Book Description

Steve Caplan, and Allan Richards, two con men, are just out of prison and plotting their next moves when Caplan has a horrifying experience. Pressure in his chest causes him to pass out and two men try to drag him away from his body. He manages to escape, thereby passing his time of death.

As Caplan reflects on this, he discovers those two "men" are actually the demons, Shamaaz and Ashtar, who let their guard down and allowed Caplan to escape. Now they cannot deliver his soul and Satan is not happy. What follows is their attempt to keep Caplan from straying off the beaten path, and away from the straight and narrow. If they don't succeed, they'll be adorning Satan's office permanently - as his new favorite couch.

Their attempts are at times funny, and at times scary, but always unexpected. Shamaaz and Ashtar try to be Caplan's puppet masters but he works with a whole different set of strings.

Caplan and his partner Richards never act totally as they should and continue to make life worrisome for the frustrated demons.

Redemption is never impossible, and that's what Steve Caplan and Al Richards discover in Satan Enraged.

The two con men are just out of prison and plotting their next moves when Caplan has a horrifying experience. He collapses in his apartment, and has an out-of-body encounter with two evil looking men who try to drag him away. Panic stricken, he fights them off managing to escape back into his body.
When he regains consciousness he reflects on this, and we discover that the two 'men' are actually the demons, Shamaaz and Ashtar, who, not expecting such violent reaction to their attempts at a casual pickup, let their guard down sufficiently to allow Caplan to escape.
Now they can't deliver his soul and Satan is not happy. What follows is their attempt to keep Caplan from straying off the beaten path, and away from the straight and narrow. If they don't succeed, they'll be adorning Satan's office permanently - as two new pieces of leather furniture.

The fun comes in watching how Caplan and his partner Richards never act totally as they should and continue to make life frustrating for the guardian demons.
Have you ever seen the movie where the spirit of a man doesn't quite make it to Heaven? Well this one poses as many challenges for the forces of darkness as that one did for the forces of good.
                    A thoroughly enjoyable book!
