          Description:
Granular activated carbon (AC)/O"3-biological activated carbon (BAC) process was employed to treat raw water and compared to O"3-BAC process in its optimum parameters (3mg/L ozone dosage with 15min oxidation time and 15min empty bed contact time in BAC). The results showed that the presence of AC improved ozone utilization and biodegradability of the effluent. For dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal, AC/O"3-BAC was more efficient than O"3-BAC and its synergetic effect could be noticed. It was showed that small molecules with molecular weight (MW) <3kDa predominated in the raw water accounting for more than 56% DOC, and their amount increased after oxidation, accounting for more than 64% DOC. Except for organic pollutants with MW>10kDa, those of other MW range were decomposed better by AC/O"3 process than by O"3 process alone. GC/MS analysis showed that AC/O"3-BAC process was effective in removing phthalate esters (PAEs) and persistent organic pollutants (POPs). PAEs' removal ratio reached more than 93% and reduced with the increase of the length of the alkyl side chains and the alkyl branch chains. POPs-polybromobiphenyls' removal reached more than 94% except for 2,2',4,5',6-pentabromophenyl and decreased with the substitutional bromines increase except for 2,2',5,5'-tetrabromobiphenyl, which could be completely removed.

            Description:
The adsorption behavior of phthalic acid and its three esters dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate and diallyl phthalate onto high-area activated carbon-cloth was studied by in situ UV-spectroscopic technique. The effect of ionization of phthalic acid on its adsorption was examined by carrying out the adsorption process in three media; water, 1M H"2SO"4 and 0.005M NaOH. Maximum adsorption was observed in 1M H"2SO"4 and almost no adsorption in 0.005M NaOH. These results were discussed in terms of electrostatic and dispersion interactions between the adsorbate species and the carbon-cloth surface taking the point of zero charge (pH"p"z"c) of the carbon-cloth into account. The adsorption process for the phthalate species studied was found to follow the first-order rate law, and the rate constants were determined. The isotherm data for the adsorption of phthalic acid and its esters were derived experimentally and fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equations. Both equations were found to represent the experimental isotherm data almost equally well.

              Description:
The atmospheric fate of six phthalate esters was investigated in the urban area of Paris (France). Total atmospheric levels (ng m^-^3) were as follows: DMP, 0.5; DEP, 10.7; DnBP, 22.2; BBP, 4.6; DEHP, 18.9; and DnOP, 0.5 ng m^-^3, showing a predominance of DnBP and next, DEHP. They are mainly present in the vapour phase, from 93.8% to 64.9%, particularly for the esters with alkyl chain length of less than six C. An inverse correlation was found between the vapour phase concentrations and the molecular weight and also a direct correlation between the vapour phase concentrations and the log [vapour pressure] of the compounds. Seasonal variations were displayed by principal component analysis (PCA), due to significant correlation between phthalate concentrations and air temperature. Rain water concentrations (ng L^-^1) were as follows: DMP, 116; DEP, 333; DnBP, 592; BBP, 81; DEHP, 423; and DnOP, 10. PCA analysis showed a seasonal variation of these concentrations correlated to the air temperature. The experimental water/air scavenging ratio was calculated and was in accordance with the theoretical one obtained from the vapour pressure and the Henry's law constant for each phthalate ester. The global trend was a decrease of the washout coefficient in relation with the rise of alkyl chain length. Yearly balances for rainwater and bulk deposition allowed the estimation of dry deposits that represented about half of total. Our findings highlight the major part played by particles in atmospheric deposition processes.

                  Description:
In this study two aerobic phthalic acid ester (PAE) degrading bacteria strains, DK4 and O18, were isolated from river sediment and petrochemical sludge, respectively. The two strains were found to rapidly degrade PAE with shorter alkyl-chains such diethyl phthalate (DEP), dipropyl phthalate (DPrP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), benzylbutyl phthalate (BBP) and diphenyl phthalate (DPP) are very easily biodegraded, while PAE with longer alkyl-chains such as dicyclohexyl phthalate (DCP) and dihexyl phthalate (DHP) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) are poorly degraded. The degradation rates of the eight PAEs were higher for strain DK4 than for strain O18. In the simultaneous presence of strains DK4 and O18, the degradation rates of the eight PAEs examined were enhanced. When the eight PAEs were present simultaneously, degradation rates were also enhanced. We also found that PAE degradation was delayed by the addition of nonylphenol or selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at a concentration of 1 @mg/g in the sediment. The bacteria strains isolated, DK4 and O18, were identified as Sphigomonas sp. and Corynebacterium sp., respectively.

                    Description:
In this study DBP-degradation strain CQ0301 was isolated from rubbish landfill soil. According to the biophysical, biochemical characteristics and analysis of 16S rRNA, the strain was identified as Rhodococcus ruber. Three new protein bands could be fractioned after DBP-inducing, which were suspected to participate the process of DBP-degrading. Catechol was suspected to be an intermediate product of DBP and cleaving the benzene ring was catalyzed by catechol 1,2-dioxygenase, because a highly activity of catechol 1,2-dioxygenase could be detected after DBP-inducing. The results of this study also showed the optimal pH value, optimal temperature which influenced the degradation rate in soil: pH 7.0-8.0, 30-35^oC. Kinetics of degradation reaction had been performed at different initial concentration and different time. Analyzed with SPSS10.0 software, the DBP degradation can be described as the same exponential model when the initial DBP concentration was lower than 50mg/kg. The kinetics equation was lnC=-0.1332t+A, with the degradation half-life of DBP in soil (5.20d). Inoculating CQ0301 could relieve DBP content in plant. We also found that adding nutrient materials into soil was useful for decreasing the DBP content in plant. In summary, we isolated a bacterium capable of degrading DBP and decreasing DBP content in plant. We also explored the mechanism of biodegradation and characterized the environmental factors influencing the degradation process in contaminated soil. Based on this work, we hope that these findings can provide some information for applying of bioremediation of DBP contaminated soil.

                      Description:
The human exposure estimates for dibutyl (DBP) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) made by two models EUSES and ACC-Human, and by an estimation approach which utilized measured concentrations in exposure media, were compared. The approach which utilized the latest monitoring data for important exposure media, yielded median daily intakes for adult humans for DBP and DEHP of 2.7 and 5.6 @mg/kg body weight per day, respectively, which were in the same range as previous estimates based on back-calculation from urinary metabolites. EUSES estimated average daily intakes of DBP and DEHP for humans that were between 8 and 13 times lower. ACC-Human does not estimate average daily intakes, but ACC-Human-estimated human milk concentrations/fugacities were more than a thousand times lower than measured concentrations/fugacities in human milk. It was concluded that the two models underestimate human exposure to phthalate esters because they consider only a few key pathways that are known to be important for other, more persistent, hydrophobic organic compounds. Further, it was shown that there are differences between the two models on the methodology for estimating concentrations in exposure media such as vegetation, milk, beef and fish. ACC-Human uses a mechanistic approach for estimating transfer through aquatic and terrestrial food chains that are known to be important for human exposure to persistent, hydrophobic organics and can, unlike EUSES, account for food chain metabolism. It proved difficult, however, to obtain organism metabolism rates needed as model inputs to ACC-Human. If exposure estimates of phthalate esters are needed, it is recommended to use an estimation approach based on high quality monitoring data as presented here and/or back-calculate daily intake from concentrations of metabolites in human urine samples from the general population.

                        5 out of 5 stars Great Stories!.......2002-07-16

These stories truly went straight to my heart...every single one of them! Mainly because I could relate to all of them. In the first story, Sarah had leukemia and I once had a very good friend that went through all the same ordeals as Sarah. The second story I think I can relate to also because a couple of months back, I too was a candy striper at my local hospital because I had to get service hours for my church in order to be Confirmed, and just like Megan, I too went to the hospital everyday at first just wanting to get my hours done and go home, but after awhile, some of the patients that you visit with and get to know everyday have a very huge impact on you and your life sort of starts to revolve around them because you're constantly worrying about their health but, there's nothing you can do except listen to them talk everyday and try to cheer them up the best that you can. Then finally in the third story about Anne, I can also relate because just recently my distant cousin, whom I was very close with, passed away on account of HIV and the AIDS virus and I know the struggle she went through everyday because I was with her most days. Her and my friend, with leukemia, were also part of the reason I stuck with my candy striping job at the hospital because, like Megan put it, it gives you a great feeling of joy knowing that somehow you made a difference in someone's life and even though I'm only a sophmore in high school, I am already starting to make plans to someday attend Medical School and become a doctor so that I can keep making a difference in people's lives. So, thank you Lurlene for writing these beautiful and truly heart-warming stories that I would recommend to anyone and everyone!

5 out of 5 stars Great Emotional Impact, even for an older person........2002-03-13

I just finished reading all three stories in this book, and I must say, Lurlene McDaniel still has the ability to create amazing and emotional stories for her readers. I have been a Lurlene McDaniel fan for many years, and it all began when I read "Six Months To Live". Her stories really bring to life the struggles that so many young people go through. All three of these stories had a major impact on me, but I think the greatest impact was brought on by "Sixteen and Dying". It's hard to explain why, exactly, but it did. At any rate, I think that any fan of Ms. McDaniel's, be they old, new, or never read any of her books before, should read these three stories.

4 out of 5 stars One Last Wish.......2002-03-06

How will you feel if someone tells you that you only have six more months to live? What will you do if you discover that you are diagnosed with Leukemia? And how will you help a boy who has tons of wishes to fulfill in his life, but is dying because he needs an urgent liver transplant? In this novel, the author Lurlene McDaniel writes three touching and heart-warming stories all about teenagers diagnosed with life-threatening diseases. The first story, Mother Help Me live, describes an adopted child, Sara, suffering from Leukemia. In order for her to survive, she must find her birth mother. Readers read a long stream of struggling from Sara¡¦s disbelief in her adoption, up to the end when a shocking fact about her birth mother is revealed. The importance of love and family is showed¡Xfamily members will always love each other no matter if they are blood related or not. I am really touched by the story because I can almost feel how Sara is hurting mentally and physically, and how hopeless but optimistic her family is. In the other story, Sixteen and Dying, Ann discovers that she is infected with HIV. She has the opportunity to go to a ranch and spend her last wonderful times there, and she meets someone who changes her life. We can see step by step how angry and confused she feels when she knows she has HIV, and when she finally understands to accept what she can¡¦t change, face the reality, and live as happy as she can. These stories are all based on a person known as JWC generously donating checks to these ill teenagers, letting them use the money to accomplish what they want before they die. These novels have made me cry, and every time I start reading, I need a box of tissue beside me. Before, I always whined about how my life was horrible with all the homework and pressure from schoolwork. But after reading Lurlene McDaniels¡¦ stories and seeing how teenagers my age are suffering from much more than I am, I finally started to appreciate what I had, stopped complaining, and always thought on the bright side.

                          Book Description

Lyn, Cat, and Gemma Kettle, beautiful thirty-three-year-old triplets, seem to attract attention everywhere they go. Whenever they're together, laughter, drama, and mayhem seem to follow. But apart, each is very much her own woman, dealing with her own share ofups and downs.

Lyn has organized her life into one big checklist, juggling the many balls of work, marriage, and motherhood with expert precision, but is she as together as her datebook would have her seem? Cat has just learned a startling secret about her marriage -- can she bring another life into her very precarious world? And can free-spirited Gemma, who bolts every time a relationship hits the six-month mark, ever hope to find lasting love?

In this wise, witty, hilarious new novel, we follow the Kettle sisters through their thirty-third-year, as they struggle to survive their divorced parents' dating each other, their technologically savvy grandmother, a cheating husband, champagne hangovers, and the fabulous, frustrating life of forever being part of a threesome. A family comedy about sibling rivalry, Three Wishes is an assured and warmhearted debut.

                          5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully absorbing read.......2007-09-18

I discovered Liane Moriarty only by chance, but once I read THE LAST ANNIVERSARY, I had to find THREE WISHES as quickly as possible. My only regret is that there aren't a dozen more of her novels already on the shelf, waiting for me to devour them. Seldom does one find a modern women's fiction writer who tells a story with such humor, perception and literate grace. Liane Moriarty's appeal spans continents and generations of readers; my 28-year-old daughter loves them as much as I do. I am anxiously awaiting her next novel!

5 out of 5 stars I'd recommend it to anyone!.......2006-01-04

Loved this book! I eagerly await another title by this author!

4 out of 5 stars Good book, disappointing ending.......2005-06-15

This book starts with a scene where 3 triplets are eating birthday cake in a restaurant. One of the women is pregnant and the other throws a fork at her stomach. The scene is told from a bystander's point of view so we don't know the sisters by name yet. The novel then works backward so we can see how they got to this point.

For me, the middle of the book was best, because it focused on Gemma's story. Gemma is the flaky, endearing, yet smart sister who is scarred by a past relationship. Her fiance died, but no one in her family knew that he was abusive. Because of his behavior, she finds herself bowing out of relationships if the new boyfriend reminds her of the fiance even slightly. For example, one of them asks her to wash the sand from her feet at the beach before getting in the car, and this reminds her of her fiance's wrath when she got sand in his car, so she breaks up with the boyfriend. Gemma is a charming, troubled person and you root for her to conquer her troubles.

One of the other sisters, Cat, is harder to care about. Cat is one of the glass-half-empty people with an enormous sense of entitlement and an equally marked lack of empathy. She feels like she deserves everything in life and takes it out on others when things go wrong. Unfortunately, the last part of the book focuses on Cat.

The third sister, Lyn, is not as well-drawn as the other two. She's a workaholic who has trouble delegating, and her husband presses her to get an assistant to help her with her on-the-go breakfast business (Brekkie Bus).

I also had trouble with something that happened to the girls' grandmother near the end. It seemed completely unnecessary and irrelevant to the plot, on top of being disturbing.

Overall, Moriarty's breezy and clever style, as well as her way with dialogue, makes this book worth reading. But I do wish she had chosen to keep the focus on Gemma and given the grandmother a break.

                          4 out of 5 stars Crack-up Kettles!.......2005-06-06

The Kettle family is quite a trip. There's Nana Kettle, mother of Frank Kettle, ex-husband of Maxine (Max) Kettle, mother of the wackiest triplets on the planet, Lynnette (Lyn), Catriona (Cat), and Gemma Kettle. The girls are long-legged and beautiful, but that's where the similarity ends. Author Moriarty grew up in a family with six children, she being the eldest, so she probably has an excellent concept of what chaos in a family means.

The scene is Sydney, Australia, and the story is about the triplets as they approach their thirty-fourth birthday. There are snippets of their lives from birth, including the divorce of their parents when they were six, the death of the fiancé of one of the girls; marriages, childbirth, miscarriage, unfaithful husbands, etc. There's a good mix of happy/sad/mundane events, but mostly these three girls and their family members try, like most of us, to survive one another. It's quite a hoot. However, there is one aspect of this story I found very disturbing. Since art imitates life, we all know of situations like the one portrayed in the book. All I can say is "Get out!"

Ms. Moriarty not only used prose to tell her story, she included emails between these very modern sisters, which I thought was very clever. In addition, she included vignettes by people who had been "exposed" to the sisters over the course of their lives. These vignettes were presented in italicized text. I liked the feature as it gave the unusual view of the story's characters from people outside the story line.

5 out of 5 stars Crazy Triplets will warm your heart.......2005-06-04

I just loved this book! As one of the previous reviewers said I thought it would be far fetched, the idea of triplets but it really wasn't. Obviously this author has some knowledge of sisters and maybe of multiples, as it came across very genuine. Each sister has a very distinct, if crazy personality. I loved the relationships they shared with one another and the rest of their family. The book is told in turn from the point of view of each of the sisters, with interspersed "man on the street" style narratives from unnamed individuals witnessing the triplets at different points in their life, which I found unusual and refreshing. Emails sent between the sisters are hilariously funny. One sister always hits the "respond to all" button and ends up sending the sister she is talking about (supposedly behind her back) the email. I also enjoyed the setting (Australia) I haven't read many books set there. It's always fun to see how the other half lives, the little differences between your life and the life of those on the other side of the world. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys humor, books about family, sisters or chick lit.
