Book Description
This book covers all aspects of the new technologies needed to turn animal cells into an acceptable and cost-effective tool for drug production. This includes modifying them genetically so that they produce the right product in high yield, getting them to grow reproducibly on an industrial scale, and extracting the required product from them. It also covers biological safety issues, and the verification of the chemical and biological nature of the protein drug produced. The work covers the latest developments in all of these areas and how they all need to be integrated for the design of an effective biotechnological production process.

Book Description
Hardbound. This volume presents microbiology as the dynamic interplay between microorganisms and their animal hosts resulting in effective production or disease. Various factors which affect that interplay are also considered. The book begins with a consideration of microorganisms constituting "normal flora" and their role in digestion and the maintenance of health. The mechanisms by which microorganisms cause disease and how the animal host responds are then discussed. Environmental factors influencing the interaction between animal host and microorganism are considered as well as the implications for animal housing. The epidemiology of infectious disease is given considerable attention. The impact of antibiotics on animal production and the problems of antibiotic resistance are discussed, and there is a major section dealing with the implications of animal production for human health. The volume ends with a consideration of the microbial principles invo

Book Description
Recent years have seen a growing trend to derive models of macroscopic phenomena encountered in the fields of engineering, physics, chemistry, ecology, self-organisation theory and econophysics from various variational or extremum principles. Through the link between the integral extremum of a functional and the local extremum of a function (explicit, for example, in the Pontryagins maximum principle variational and extremum principles are mutually related. Thus it makes sense to consider them within a common context.
The main goal of the present book is to collect various mathematical formulations and examples of physical reasoning that involve both basic theoretical aspects and applications of variational and extremum approaches to systems of the macroscopic world.
The first part of the book is focused on the theory, whereas the second focuses on applications. The unifying variational approach is used to derive the balance or conservation equations, phenomenological equations linking fluxes and forces, equations of change for processes with coupled transfer of energy and substance, and optimal conditions for energy management.
*A unique multidisciplinary synthesis of variational and extremum principles in theory and application.
*A comprehensive review of current and past achievements in variational formulations for macroscopic processes.
*Uses Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms as a basis for the exposition of novel approaches to transfer and conversion of thermal, solar and chemical energy.

Book Description
This book gives a survey of, and systematic introduction to, high-resolution electron microscopy. The method is thoroughly discussed; the latest developments are reported; and applications to surface and interface analysis and to the study of hidden structures are detailed. The book arises from research carried out at one of the world's leading centers of electron microscopy. It will appeal to researchers and advanced students.
Book Description
Sly, devious, inventive, and more than a little irritating, the Bard of Vandam Street returns in Steppin' on a Rainbow, a new adventure full of sound, fury, and a hula girl or two.
Alone in the world -- meaning: anyone who will speak to him is out of town -- Kinky Friedman ponders the imponderables of life and discusses the state of the world with his cat. The cat, of course, says nothing. Kinky's reverie (and constant state of morbid self-absorption) is interrupted by a call from an old friend in Hawaii, Will Hoover, a journalist on a Honolulu newspaper. Hoover has called with a problem: Mike McGovern, one of Kinky's sidekicks and a stalwart Village Irregular, visiting Hawaii to work on a book, has disappeared while strolling on the beach. Knowing McGovern's penchant for taking the occasional side trip, Kinky is not overly concerned.
As the days turn into yet more days, however, consternation grows to the point where Stephanie Dupont (called home from a Caribbean lull to bury her sixteen-year-old pesky Maltese dog) urges Kinky to fly to Hawaii to look into McGovern's disappearance and even offers to join him in the search. Additional support comes from P. I. Steve Rambam, who wings in from Israel to join in the hunt, as well as Kinky's pal John McCall, the Shampoo King from Dripping Springs. Texas, that is.
Once in Hawaii, Kinky, Stephanie, Rambam, Hoover, and McCall set off on a perilous adventure involving ancient myths, sacrificial cults, totems, taboos, and the occasional lei.
Steppin' on a Rainbow is Kinky Friedman doing what only Kinky Friedman can do -- and, as always, it's outrageous, unsettling, and very, very moving, all at once.
Customer Reviews:
If you thought Stephanie was annoying in the book..........2006-11-09
Try getting through this on AUDIO CASSETTE as I did! The man did a good job with Kinky's voice but when he did Stephanie saying something like "I wish YOU'D drop dead, pencil di*k", he sounded like a transvestite. An annoying one.
I agreed with the other person who said it was lame how Kinky solved this one. It bothered me to. Really a total cheat, and the ending was dull leaving you with..."that's IT"?
Pass this one up, or save it for the last Kinky book you ever read.
Flimsy.......2006-08-16
A very weak plot serves to string together clever dialog, literary trivia and the local color of Hawaii.
It starts off cute and devolves.
KF dutifully works in references to all of Hawaii's pop culture, but somehow misses Spam. Not all the Hawaiiana is on target. One error is saying that Queen Lilioukalani was married to David Kalakua. She was his sister and was married to John Dominis.
Can those who enter Hawaii on private planes really avoid the pet quarantine?
I hope Mr. Friedman's other books are better.......2003-05-04
Contrived. Tedious. Irritating. Trying too hard. These are just a few of the ways I would describe "Steppin' on a Rainbow". I can tell that Friedman has talent as a writer. It is a real shame, however, that he insists upon insulting the intelligence of the reader with a constant barrage of quips and one-liners that aren't really even shockingly funny as much as they are merely sour comments made in poor taste (Example: he makes a reference to nurses being gone from the beach with the help of Richard Speck... or something along those lines. I got the joke, such as it was. It just really wasn't very funny or very clever). But this is the only book of Friedman's that I've read so far. I will read others, but I'm not going to be buying them with my own money. I'll borrow the next one or check it out from the library. So far, I may as well have flushed the cost of this oinker down the toilet. The man is skilled as a writer. I just don't know if he's got the talent to back up the skill. This story was dull and contrived. A festival of obnoxious, unlikable characters and plot conveniences. By the end of the book I was hoping that all of the major characters would get killed in a bus crash or something. Not a good sign when the author places himself in the story as the protagonist. Mr. Friedman-- I wish you all the best in the world and a long and happy life... but this story stinks.
He started out so good..........2003-04-13
I graduated from Kinky Friedman (the Lasso from El Paso) and the Texas Jewboys to his mysteries, and was more than pleased. Like his music, his first novels were great, and improved with age. Somewhere along the line, about six books into the series, he got lazy. The dialog is no longer witty, just trite. Steppin' on a Rainbow is awful. Kinky has just stopped trying.
Not a good introduction to Kinky.......2002-12-19
Having read everything that Donald Westlake has written, I am always looking for other authors of comic mysteries. A friend suggested Kinky Friedman so I bought "Steppin On A Rainbow." I'll try another of his books because he is so popular that they have got to be better but it will be the last if it's like this one. The main character has some great lines and is certainly likeable enough and so are his cohorts but his love interest, Stephanie DuPont, has got to be the most obnoxious character in all of literature. I was hoping that she might get bumped off before the end so she doesn't reappear in any other books. I also had a problem with Kinky getting the solution to the case in a dream rather than by clever detective work. Not a great mystery but good enough to try another.
