Book Description
This addition to the successful series of Elsevier wall charts will be especially welcomed by students and palaeontologists needing an authoritative overview of invertebrate fossils. The attractive and logical presentation of information makes the chart an excellent teaching and study aid, as well as a colourful wall decoration.
Superbly detailed line drawings are a valuable feature of the chart. The most important fossil invertebrate phyla are illustrated and the distinguishing features of 700 major genera are clearly shown for ease of identification. Phyla represented in the chart include: Porifera (sponges), Cnidaria (jellyfishes, corals), Bryozoa, Brachiopoda, Mollusca (snails, clams, ammonites), Arthropoda (insects, crustaceans) and Echinodermata (starfishes, urchins).
The stratigraphical distributions of the phyla become immediately clear from the organisation of the chart. The brightly coloured age-ranges of the phyla and their subdivisions are printed over the stratigraphic periods, which form horizontal bands spanning the chart from left to right. The taxonomy follows the most current classification.
In addition to students of palaeontology and academics requiring a handy visual overview of the subject, this chart will be much in demand by natural history museums, oil companies, evolutionary biologists and amateur collectors.

Book Description
The nonlocality phenomena exhibited by entangled quantum systems are certainly one of the most extraordinary aspects of quantum theory. This book discusses this phenomenon according to several points of view, i.e., according to different interpretations of the mathematics of the quantum formalism.
The several interpretations of the Copenhagen interpretation, the many worlds, the de Broglie-Bohm, quantum logics, the decohering by the environment approach and the histories approach interpretations are scrutinized and criticized in detail. Recent results on cryptography, quantum bit commitment, quantum erasers and teleportation are also presented and discussed.
Book Description
* WINNER OF THE 1988 LAKATOS AWARD FOR AN OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO THE PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE * This book concentrates on research done during the last twenty years on the philosophy of quantum mechanics. In particular, the author focuses on three major issues: whether quantum mechanics is an incomplete theory, whether it is non-local, and whether it can be interpreted realistically. Much of the book is concerned with distinguishing various senses in which these questions can be taken, and assessing the bewildering variety of answers philosophers and physicists have given up to now. The book is self-contained in that it presents the necessary parts of the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics and also covers other interpretative topics, such as the problem of measurement and the uncertainty relations. A considerable portion of the book is based on original arguments presented by the author in lectures and research papers over the past ten years. However, this material is integrated with a broad coverage of most of the recent research in the field, so as to provide a balanced introduction to the whole subject.

Book Description
This book offers a series of contributions written by scientists interested in a philosophical reflection on recent advances of science. Profound scientific theorems in modern mathematics and physics shed new light on two fundamental questions often only implicitly dealt with: is mathematical truth a purely man-made construction and is the physical reality behind the phenomena at least in principle always observable? The answers to both questions are closely related to the possible existence of an omniscient and omnipotent being. In this sense mathematical undecidability and quantum nonlocality are proposed as a possible road to metaphysical principles and eventually to God.
The reader will find generally understandable presentations of recent results from mathematics, like the theorems of Gödel and Turing, and physics, mostly related to EPR Gedanken experiments and Bell's theorem. In the case of physics special attention is directed to old and new experiments supporting a nonlocal approach. Especially worth mentioning is the until now unedited contribution of the late John Bell on Bell's theorem held on 22 January 1990 in a Seminar at CERN.

The Science cannot give a global acount of the reality.......2000-11-01
This book is a compend of a serie of articles which have a common point: all of them coincide in the idea of that Science (specially Mathematics and Physics) are "incomplete" sciences, i.e. they cannot give a global acount of the universe and its rules.
The book is not strictly speaking a demonstration of the existence of God. The scope is to give reasons -scientific reasons- for why a scientist should be opened to the idea of an intelillence superior, who would order the universe.
There are three sections: The first one try to demonstrate, based in Goedel's theorem, the incompleteness of Mathematics. The second one is centered on the limits of modern Physics, taking into acount the predictions of Quantum Mechaniscs. And the third one gives a global review of how this limitations in modern Science can be related to the question of the existence of God.
The good point of the book is that it is not a negative criticism to modern Science. It is but an analisys of the real conclussions that Science can reach, and what lies beyond its limits.
After reading this book, one get the impression that there is a lot to investigate in Science Phylosophy, and that in the future the mankind will reach a lot of development in this area.

Unrequited love is an old standard, but in Who Do You Love Jean Thompson hauls it out of the hope chest and makes it new. Her territory is the passionate, off-kilter intersection between women and men who have long ago resigned themselves to lovelessness and deep disappointment. In her third collection of short stories, people "don't say that much, but don't expect to. The old grievances, failure, and shame are turning into history, inch by inch." Not that they don't struggle against their fates. A policeman answers a routine call and looks to make a difference in a single mother's life, to ruinous consequences. A widower is forced to put his house up for sale, and proceeds to haunt the young couple who move in with his unending grief. Against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, a young girl witnesses the battle raging in her house between her veteran father and patriotic mother.
Thompson skinny-dips into her characters' skulls. We eavesdrop on their most private thoughts, their justifications and reversals of conscience, as they weigh fleeting passions against long-term longings. Anyone want to place a wager on what wins out in the end? While they lazily play out moments of moral turpitude in unassuming settings, these characters observe the scenery with a constant supply of devastating dialogue. Witness Benny in "The Little Heart," as she carries on a conversation with Pete, a lover half her age: "You are the most beautiful creature. Hush. You are. I'm crazy about you. Throwing caution to the winds here." Lesser writers would stop right there, leaving the passage flat and artless, but listen to the bomb Thompson drops in the very next line: "Do you know I've been menstruating for longer than you've been alive?" Who Do You Love can occasionally fall into the variations-on-a-theme category, but there's nothing tedious here. Thompson's prose is often witty and her delvings into seaminess--drugs, flings, futile jobs--are never patronizing or sensational. In her world there's always a little room left over at the end for grace. --Ryan Boudinot
Book Description
In this acclaimed collection, Jean Thompson limns the lives of ordinary people -- a lonely social worker, a down-and-out junkie, a divorced cop on the night shift -- to extraordinary effect. With wisdom and sympathy and spare eloquence, she writes of their inarticulate longings for communion and grace.Yet even the saddest situations are imbued with Thompson?s characteristic humor and a wry glimmer of hope.
With Who Do You Love, readers will discover a writer with rare insight into the resiliency of the human spirit and the complexities of love.

Not an easy book to share...........2007-09-22
My girl friend travels much, and when she does, I usually read her to sleep from one of my many story books. I purchased this text with that intent in mind. One could probably enjoy this book as an individual reading, but when used as a story telling book the reading definitely requires some finessing to get through.
Excellent stylist, less-than-engaging stories.......2007-06-16
I was given this book by a friend who (like so many who seem to have read this work) heard about it from David Sedaris. It is not one I would have purchased on my own, but I'm glad to have been introduced to Jean Thompson's work. She is a superb observer of human nature and of life. Open to any page and you'll find wonderful, insightful descriptions of characters--both their internal and external lives. There's not a page in the book that does not have multiple delights along these lines.
Variety, however, is not one of this author's strong points. All the stories have the same tone (sad, thoughtful) and most of the characters share the same voice, the same way of looking at things even if their particular circumstances differ. Also, many of the first person narrators seem far too self-aware and are able to express far too clearly what they think and feel..and all of them sound suspiciously like the author herself.
It's taken me quite a while to get through this book because, though I enjoy each story on its own--and especially love Thompson's masterful prose--I do not find myself unable to resist picking it up again to read the next one. While immersed in a given story, I find it rewarding in many ways. Once I set it down, I find myself wanting to read something else instead of finishing it. I think this mostly has to do with the stories she chooses to tell. They're pretty much slice of life vignettes (frequently having to do with abandoned women) and that only holds my interest for so long. Wish she'd find an intriguing story to tell and on which to use her amazing powers as a writer.
Characters.......2007-06-07
If you're looking for epic storytelling, this is not the book for you. "Who Do You Love" is filled with tales of more-or-less ordinary people. However, the author makes the stories extraordinary by fleshing out the motivations, thoughts, feelings, desires and flaws of her characters so ingeniously that by the time you finish the book, you feel like you've made a dozen new friends. Although somber, the tone is more sympathetic than dreary. This collection offers beautiful insight into the lives of modern, everyday, American people, if you have the patience and empathy to go along for the not-entirely-fast ride.
A Little Disappointing..........2006-11-11
I bought this book because David Sedaris recommended it at the last reading I attended. The stories are all on the "dark" side and they do not appeal to me. Admittedly, I prefer something much more light hearted, so others may love this book.
He made me do it.......2006-11-04
I bought this out of obediance to David Sedaris, like other people who have reviewed this book. While written beautifully and beleivable prose I found it a painful and sad book with NO happy endings and little laughter, which seemed in direct opposition to the source of the review that I purchased from.

Interactive Bedtime Story.......2007-01-16
This story is good for young children who have short attention spans. Each page is interactive in that the children have something to touch. My little boy, who is 16 monthes old, enjoys it.
Very cute book.......2006-11-04
My 6-month old son loves this book! He gets so excited for me to turn the page so he can touch the next bear. I am buying it for my friends also and I'm looking for some other touch & feel books to buy.
Customer Reviews:
Awsome book.......2001-09-24
This book is one of my favorite book... once you get started you won't be able to stop...at least I couldn't. take my word for it and buy it!!!!
A Light, Fun Read!.......2001-01-13
These "Love Stories" books are sort of a guilty pleasure of mine. They take about two hours to read, which is perfect for a lazy weekend, and they're nothing too heavy. The plots are usually pretty interesting, and this one is no exception... In fact, it's probably one of the best in the series.
Kai and Kirsten are skaters. Kirsten dreams of the Olympics; Kai is only doing figures to keep himself "in shape" from an "injury" until he can go back to his "real sport," hockey. Kai is obnoxious at first, but (of course) that means that Kirsten will fall in love with him.
The aspect of this book that most grabbed me was the use of first person narrative. Some of the books in the "Love Stories" series are in the third person, which gets to be a bit unbelievable in parts. But this story was told from Kirsten's point of view, in her voice, which made it easier to "get into" and really enjoy, without all of the crappy adult romance "Kirsten felt a rush of warmth in her hand when Kai touched her..." sort of junk. Since the book is labeled for young adults, it's a bit more realistic.
My only problem with the book was the character development of Kirsten's boyfriend, Troy. I just felt like he was more of a "stock" character, and I don't think a girl as smart as Kirsten would go for him and then later go for Kai. Whatever, it's still a good, fun book.
Amazing!.......2000-04-18
For anyone who thinks that teen love is a joke needs to readthis book. It will keep you on your toes all throughout the story andyou won't be able to put it down. Kristen Hayes is the talentedskater who gets a new coach and then he flushes her olympic dream of her winning the gold down the drain. The only way he said she'll ever make it to the olympics is if she pair skates and who else would be her partner but the obnoxious and big-headed Kai Bergstrom. This book will leave you smiling and happy and then wishing you were an olympic skater with a handsome and mysterious partner too! END
A TOTAL Must-read!!!!!!!.......1999-09-08
I loved this book!!!!!!!!!!!! I am also an ice-skater, so I understood how Kirstin felt about her dreams. It was fate that her old coach dumped her! I really liked the way it ended- I almost cried! A must-read for anyone who likes romance, and a TOTAL must-read for the billions of people who like ice-skating!
Amazing! Superb!.......1999-06-08
This book seemed like nothing at first, until it got rolling. This is one of my favorite books in the series so far, since I just started reading them. Kirsten Hayes dreams of the Olympics and her solo-skating debut. But all her dreams come crashing down, as her new coach tells her she'll never make it. He decides to pair her and she, reluctantly, agrees. Her new partner, Kai Bergstrom, is anything but good. Sure, he's a "hunk", a great figure-skater, and an ex-hockey champ, but Kai is also arrogant and rude with nothing but regret at being partnered up with Kirsten. And when their coach signs them up for the Sectionals, they really have to practice. One night, as Kai and Kirsten stay late to work on the "death spiral", they share a magical kiss that only confuses and joys them even more. To make it to the Sectionals, they must overcome Kai's choice of quitting, the difficult routine and their new found love. You will love this book! I highly recommend it to all Love Stories readers.
