Book Description
The technical advances in molecular biology have endowed us with a wealth of knowledge, which has allowed us to identify the cause of diseases not only at a single gene level but at a greater magnitude, where a substitution or deletion of a single base pair can be identified. Our present task is to establish a clear link between phenotype and nucleotide sequence. Obviously, a gene is no longer an imaginary entity. Recent discoveries in a number of bewildering traits, whose inheritance do not follow simple mendelian rules, have caused much amazement. For example, fragile X-syndrome, spine and bulbar muscular atrophy and myotic dystrophy arise from "triples repeat mutation" and amplification in future generations. Genetic diseases which are inherited, can now be diagnosed prenatally; an idea that was once inconceivable.
The aim of the second volume, entitled Morbid Anatomy of the Genome, is to reflect on the importance of molecular genetics in modern medicine. The field has expanded so as to warrant a volume dedicated exclusively toward understanding those who wish to know the cause, detection and in turn treatment of such diseases. In this volume, I have commissioned several scientists to contribute 12 chapters. A chapter describing a special role of molecular genetics in combating genetic diseases through gene therapy has also been included, while chapter 13 is a commentary.
A complete account of all diseases whose genetic basis is well established would be a herculean task and is not within the scope of a single volume format. Therefore a few specific topics have been chosen which may be of the greatest interest to scientists and clinicians. The purpose of this issue is to keep abreast of the latest developments in a select group of genetic diseases.

Book Description
Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) offer an efficient method for finding optimal cleanup strategies for hazardous plumes contaminating groundwater by allowing hydrologists to rapidly search through millions of possible strategies to find the most inexpensive and effective containment of contaminants and aquifer restoration. ANNs also provide a faster method of developing systems that classify seismic events as being earthquakes or underground explosions.
Farid Dowla and Leah Rogers have developed a number of ANN applications for researchers and students in hydrology and seismology. This book, complete with exercises and ANN algorithms, illustrates how ANNs can be used in solving problems in environmental engineering and the geosciences, and provides the necessary tools to get started using these elegant and efficient new techniques.
Following the development of four primary ANN algorithms (backpropagation, self-organizing, radial basis functions, and hopfield networks), and a discussion of important issues in ANN formulation (generalization properties, computer generation of training sets, causes of slow training, feature extraction and preprocessing, and performance evaluation), readers are guided through a series of straightforward yet complex illustrative problems. These include groundwater remediation management, seismic discrimination between earthquakes and underground explosions, automated monitoring for acoustic and seismic sensor data, estimation of seismic sources, geospatial estimation, lithologic classification from geophysical logging, earthquake forecasting, and climate change. Each chapter contains detailed exercises often drawn from field data that use one or more of the four primary ANN algorithms presented.

Book Description
This book shows the state of the art in Europe on a very new discipline, Space Weather. This discipline lies at the edge between science and industry. This book reflects such a position with theoretic papers and applicative papers as well. It is divided into five chapters. Each chapter starts with a short introduction, which shows the coherence of a given domain. Then, four to five contributions written by the best specialists in Europe give detailed hints of a hot topic in space weather.
From the reading of this book, it becomes evident that space weather is a living discipline, full of promises and already full of amazing realizations. The strength of Europe is clear through the book, but it is also clear that this discipline is worldwide.

Customer Reviews:
Terrible lab manual.......2007-02-24
I inherited this lab manual when I started teaching physical geology this semester, and I told my students to return it to the bookstore. It contains factual errors (such as referring to hornblende and other non-metallic minerals as metallic, which they are not - metallic minerals are opaque in thin section), and the pedagogy is highly questionable. In the rock and mineral sections, it relies too heavily on photographs. Students already have a tendency to want to simply match minerals and rocks to pictures, which doesn't work, and this book encourages this. The book is too much talk and not enough action. Students in a lab should be guided to work with objects, not to simply answer questions out of a book. There is too much explanation provided, with little left for students to figure out on their own. Labs should be presented to students as mysteries to be solved, and this book takes all the mystery out of everything.
Geology Prof........2007-01-06
This "lab manual" is VERY thick and far too wordy. Really, it's more of a spiral-bound textbook than a lab manual. Additionally, the lab questions appear in list format at the end of each section, so there is virtually no standardized answersheet for students to record their work on. That not only makes it harder on the students, but efficient grading is nearly impossible unless the instructor makes his/her own taylor-made answer sheets for the students to use on EACH lab. As if that weren't bad enough, the lab manual's companion web site is horrid. I am amazed that the AGI and the NAGT produced this lab manual.
Because they asked me to.......2006-11-04
I bought this book for school, since my school was out of the book and this one was cheaper. It does the job, it is probably less expensive than your school, and you can't get a used one because usually some of the pages you need are missing.
Laboratory Manual in Physical Geology.......2006-08-08
Publishers are driving me nuts with their inflated prices...they made a small number of edition #6 which was considered their best one and then let their supplies run out so that schools would have to buy their "new" one. After flipping through it, it is clear that it is nearly identical to the sixth edition lab manual. Such a waste.
Incorrect Item .......2006-01-19
I orderd one item and received something else. This item was needed for an on-line class and due to the error I am behind schedule on my class work.

Product Description
The book contains private views of experts from various countries on the role of geological mapping in sustainable development. New technologies and concepts are presented, which are either awaiting for recognition by Geological Surveys, or are gradually applied in some survey. The target of the book is well worded in the "Summary and recommendations" elaborated by the Ad Hoc Committee at the Advanced ResearchWorkshop on Innovative Geological Cartography, held under NATO sponsorship in Poland in November 2003. After the "Summaries" were issued by the end of 2003, the authors who presented their views at the Workshop, gave revised versions of their papers with more new ideas and materials. Generally, the book is addressed to cartographers in Geological Surveys, geologists and geographers co-operating with landuse planners, ecologists and decision makers, who may learn about the state-of-the-art and the enormous information potential of the modern information technologies in Geosciences. The book, however, gives no methodological recipes but, as it was authors' intention, may and shall be used as a guide-book in modernizing Information Technologies at the local, regional and national levels in Geosciences.

Book Description
This book presents an in-depth discussion of the semiconductor-laser gain medium. The optical and electronic properties of semiconductors, particularly semiconductor quantum-well systems, are analyzed in detail, covering a wide variety of near-infrared systems with or without strain, as well as wide-gap materials such as the group-III nitride compounds or the II-VI materials. The important bandstructure modifications and Coulomb interaction effects are discussed, including the solution of the longstanding semiconductor laser lineshape problem. Quantitative comparisons between measured and predicted gain/absorption and refractive index spectra for a wide variety of semiconductor-laser materials enable the theoretical results to be used directly in the engineering of advanced laser and amplifier structures. A wealth of examples for many different material combinations bestow the book with quantitative and predictive value for a wide variety of applications.
Customer Reviews:
Clarity problem in explanation of equations.......2007-05-20
This book looks and IS good when it comes down to going through complicated optical gain calculations. However, I feel the book expects reader to know important and advanced fundamentals of lasers which it does not go through in the book and may prove disadvantage to both advanced and beginner researchers interested in semiconductor lasers. The book includes many complex equations but they are, in my opinion, not explicitly explained in the text. In addition, what I found most disappointing about the book is that there were no examples to demonstrate gain calculations on any material (like GaAs-AlGaAs etc), which would really help in modeling a quantum well structure.
not an introductory book.......2005-11-12
Engineering students may have a hard time to understand this book.
Customer Reviews:
I love Wodehouse.......2007-04-17
The volume begins with Bertie taking a trip to the doctor for some spots. The visit ends with the doctor reccomending that Bertie get away from the busy city life and relax in the county--it could be a matter of life or death. And so Bertie tries to escape to the quiet life--except life has something else in mind. He finds himself in the midst of his Aunt Dahlia's gambling over local horses; Simola and Potato Chip.
Potato Chip has grown deeply attached to a local cat and is unable to race, due to his melancholy if the cat is absent. Bertie, trying his best not to get sucked into his aunt's machinations over throwing the race, naturally does. It's funny and light hearted, not some of my favorite characters, but still its lovely Wodehouse and what more do I need?
Master of whimsey charms and amuses!.......2005-03-07
We somehow missed PG Wodehouse on our reading menu growing up, but recently discovered this little gem. Apparently last in a dozen or so books (from a bibliography of over 80 novels!) about a gentile bachelor named Bertie Wooster and his butler Jeeves (no doubt the origin of "Ask Jeeves"!), it's refreshing to occasionally indulge in a light story that manages to amuse and entertain with no sex, no violence, and few toils and troubles! The plot sees Bertie taking a vacation in the country to get some fresh air and improve his health habits, using a cottage arranged by his "aged relative" Aunt Dahlia. His aunt gets involved in a scheme to wager on an important horserace, when it occurs to the bettors to kidnap a cat befriended by the opposing horse and critical to his good behavior. Bertie unwittingly gets in the middle of this mess, and ere it's over, a former girlfriend proposes, a former explorer is chasing him, and a former college pal first threatens then befriends him as they all take bit roles in this laughable series of events.
Wodehouse turns a good phrase and Bertie's frequent queries to Jeeves for just the right word is a charming ploy to unearth elegant and often funny phraseology. Assuming "'Nappers" is representative of his work, we plan to seek out more of his stories when we're not out for thrills and chills, but rather just passing a couple of pleasant hours with the digressions of Bertie & Jeeves. Enjoy!
Aunts Aren't Gentlemen.......2004-09-08
P.G. Wodehouse's best stories are invariably those that involve the butler Jeeves helping the scatterbrained and easy-living Bertie Wooster escape from the fickle hand of fate and his own pranks. The Cat-nappers focuses on Bertie being at the wrong place at the wrong time and being constantly in the soup because of what others do. He valiantly launches forward and needs less help than usual to remain the carefree bachelor about town.
The Cat-nappers starts off innocently enough as Bertie finds himself with disturbing pink spots on his chest. Seeking out a physician's counsel, Bertie gets more than he bargained for when he bumps into Vanessa Cook (who had turned down his marriage proposal the year before) and O.J. (Orlo) Porter (former dorm mate at Oxford who favored left-wing causes) as they lead a protest march that stalls Bertie's car. Porter hops in the car to escape the Bobbies and sells Bertie some life insurance. Porter turns out to be in love with Ms. Cook and is very jealous of anyone who might have an interest in her. At the doctor's office, Bertie runs into Major Plank who had once tried to have Bertie arrested. Fortunately, Plank cannot remember who he is . . . but it's a narrow escape. The doctor tells Bertie the spots will go away, but Bertie's health needs are not being met. He suggests a trip to someplace quiet in the country.
Naturally, Bertie thinks of his Aunt Dahlia and the wonderful meals he always enjoys when he visits her. But she's off visiting elsewhere. She does offer to take a cottage for Bertie so he can visit with her.
Once there, things go badly downhill. Naturally, Bertie does it to himself to some extent. Ignoring Jeeves's advice, he takes a wrong turn and ends up with a nasty scare. From there, the complications build to their humorous conclusion as thieves, bettors, lovers, churchmen and angry horsemen blunder about in silly circles that provide much delight to the reader. Naturally, Bertie's always at the wrong place at the wrong time . . . but at the right place at the right time to make us laugh!
One of the special charms of this story is that Bertie tries very hard to do the right thing . . . and finds it exceptionally difficult to do so.
As the book ends, Bertie notes that the problems with the world boil down to the comment that "Aunts Aren't Gentlemen" which is the book's original English title.
Peace is what you carry with you.
Jeeves & Bertie #13.......2002-09-13
Previous: Jeeves and the Tie that Binds (Much Obliged, Jeeves)
This book, like Thank You, Jeeves, appears to be out of print, though I can't fathom why it should be. A bit shorter than the rest, and with a different setting, it is still much of the fare we are used to-Bertie's Aunt Dahlia has gotten herself into the soup with an ill-judged wager, and it falls to Bertie and Jeeves to get her out. Meanwhile, Bertie runs into a former flame named Vanessa (Florence Craye on steroids), whose rocky relationship with her revolutionary boyfriend spells trouble for Bertram. Add to this a cat that shows up at the most inopportune moments and a certain Captain Plank, who is still under the misapprehension that Bertie is Alpine Joe, and you have a hilarious little tale that fully lives up to the Jeeves and Bertie standard. A far cry better than Jeeves and the Tie that Binds, it is a worthy way to end a wonderful series, and one of the best of the lot.
Plenty of Smiles.......2002-04-02
My first Wodehouse read, and I was not let down. This tightly written novel, unlike so many others, manages to put comedy on virtually every page. With plenty of dry-humor, and many funny turns-of-phrases, the well-drawn characters and playful dialogue steal the show. I strongly recommend looking for this slim volume and then enjoying the escapades of Jeeves and Bertie.
Book Description
Talk about style! Ashley and I were invited to a cool costume party at the house of a famous mystery writer, Fiona O'Leary. We couldn't wait to hit the ballroom for the big 1920s dance contest.
The whole flap started when Fiona's adored cat disappeared. And everyone thought our dog Clue "dunnit"! Ashley and I were sure our pooch was framed. But we'd have to prove it -- or Olsen and Olsen could end up Clue-less!
Customer Reviews:
Fun for Mary-Kate and Ashley!.......2004-03-18
Mary-Kate and Ashley stuff is very boring. This book, however, was one of more fun books, that's why I gave it 2 stars. I wouldn't give much Mary-Kate and Ashley stuff 5 stars, it any of the products 5 stars! In this book, the Olsen Twin's friend, Patty's grandmother's beloved cat disappears. Can the Olsen twins find the cat? This book has a twist to it that you'll never believe!
A good Book!!.......2001-01-29
Mary-Kate and Ashley get invited to stay the weekend at their friend, Patty's, grandmother's house, who is a famous author, and get to hear the grandmother read some of her new book. But of course, there is a mystery to solve, like always. The mystery is that the Patty's grandmother's cat, Flapper, turns up missing. I liked the book, and if you're a fan of mary-kate and ashley, you will too.
