Book Description
The monitoring and surveillance of genetically modified higher plants (GMHP) is an area that is still lacking an established international monitoring program. This volume presents ideas and suggestions by focusing on procedures in composing such a program and methods for detection of transgene dispersal and of environmental effects when GM plants are cultivated. Objectives and procedures for monitoring and surveying present and new types of GM plants are described, including herbicide tolerance, insect resistance and changed agronomic performance. Other issues covered in this book include: detection of GM plant dispersal and hybridisation; agricultural use and large scale effects; habitat selection and community invasibility; baseline definition and the time perspective; effects on ecosystems, vegetation and organism groups; sampling designs; data analysis and relevant statistical methods. In a final chapter, conclusions and recommendations are presented...

Product Description
The field of physical oceanography has matured to a point where it is now conceivable to combine numerical models and observations via data assimilation in order to provide ocean prediction products on various spatial and time scales. As a result, many nations have begun large-scale efforts to provide routine products to the oceanographic community and started to develop operational oceanography systems. The Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) provides a framework for these efforts, i.e. a global system of observations, communications, modeling, and assimilation that will deliver regular, comprehensive information on the state of the oceans, in a way that will promote and engender wide utility and availability of this resource for maximum benefit to the community. The societal benefit of this experiment will be an increased knowledge of the marine environment and ocean climate, predictive skills for societal, industrial, and commercial benefit and tactical and strategic advantage, as well as the provision of a comprehensive and integrated approach to the oceans. The chapters collected in this volume cover a wide range of topics and summarize our present knowledge in ocean modeling, ocean observing systems, and data assimilation.

Book Description
The Northern Sea Route - the ice infested sea lanes running north of Siberia - can potentially cut sailing distances between Northwest Europe and Northeast Asia by as much as 50% compared with present routes. Further, the route passes some of the world's largest deposits of oil and gas.
Several recent multimillion dollar research programmes have investigated the route's commercial, technological and commercial feasibility. The results of this research were presented to the Northern Sea Route User Conference in Oslo, November 1999. The Conference was also told about new Russian policies on the route. The research results and Russian policy statements were assessed and commented on by representatives of international shipping organisations, who also proposed the shipping industry's own view of the commercial feasibility of the NSR.
The present book, derived from the Conference, discusses the question of international shipping on the NSR more comprehensively than has ever been witnessed before, not only as a matter of theoretical research but also as a practical matter, assessed in commercial, political and maritime terms.
Readership: All those interested in the NSR, whether as a business opportunity or an object of research or environmental concern.

Book Description
A true story of catastrophe and survival at sea, Fatal Forecast is a
spellbinding moment-by-moment account of seventy-two hours in the lives of eight
young fishermen, some of whom would never set foot on dry land again.
On the morning of November 21, 1980, two small Massachusetts lobster boats set
out for Georges Bank, a bountiful but perilous fishing ground 130 miles off the
coast of Cape Cod. The National Weather Service had forecast typical fall
weather, and the young, rugged crewmen aboard the Sea Fever and the
Fair Wind had made dozens of similar trips that season. They had no reason
to expect that this trip would be any different.
But the only weather buoy on Georges Bank was malfunctioning, and the National
Weather Service had failed to share this fact with the fishermen who depended
on its forecasts. As the two small boats headed out to sea, a colossal storm was
brewing to the southeast, a furious maelstrom the National Weather Service did
not accurately locate until the boats were already caught in the storm's grip,
trapped in the treacherous waters of Georges Bank.
Battered by sixty-foot waves and hurricane-force winds, the crews of the Fair
Wind and the Sea Fever (captained by Peter Brown, whose father owned
the Andrea Gail of Perfect Storm fame) struggled heroically to
keep their vessels afloat. But the storm soon severely crippled one boat and
overturned the other, trapping its crew inside.
Meticulously researched and vividly told, Fatal Forecast is first and
foremost a tale of miraculous survival. Most amazing is the story of Ernie
Hazzard, who managed to crawl inside a tiny inflatable life raft and then spent
more than fifty terrifying hours adrift on the stormy open sea. By turns tragic,
thrilling, and inspiring, Ernie's story deserves a place among the greatest
survival tales ever told.
Equally riveting are the stories of the brave men and women from the Coast Guard
and the crew of a nearby fishing boat who imperiled their own lives that day in
order to save the lives of others.
As gripping and harrowing as The Perfect Storm - but with a miracle
ending - Fatal Forecast is an unforgettable true story about the
collision of two spectacular forces: the brutality of nature and the human will
to survive.
Customer Reviews:
Gripping adventure.......2007-10-02
If you liked "The Perfect Storm," you'll love "Fatal Forecast."
Michael J. Tougias' book is a gripping page-turner about fisherman fighting for their lives amid a severe storm off the New England coast.
Tougias' taut storytelling puts the reader in the middle of the action. Like the best survival stories, you can feel yourself in the characters' place, trying to figure what to do next.
I also like that Tougias includes related stories of fishing boat disasters (and near-disasters).
I do have one small complaint. This book, like many of this type, includes a batch of pictures in the middle. I suppose it's cheaper to print the photos altogether like this rather than insert them at the appropriate place in the story. But in this case, if you look at the pictures (and what reader wouldn't?), some of them give away the ending of the book.
That said, it's still a great story. Allow yourself plenty of time when you pick up "Fatal Forecast" -- it's hard to put down.
Fatal Forecast.......2007-09-21
Spellbinding! An amazing true story of a fishing trip that turned into a disaster. Excellent writing and the author weaves multi-tales of many people caught in this non-forcasted storm. Very readable, the book you can't put down!
harrowing story on the Georges Bank..........2007-09-17
I was totally enthralled by this true story of 2 fishing boats from Massachusetts caught in a ferocious storm off the Georges Bank. A storm as severe as 'the Perfect Storm' exept no on knew this one was coming because of a malfunctioning weather buoy in the Bank. Michael Tougias writes a well-researched almost documentary style epic with no filler. The brave fishermen and heroes of the Coast Guard stand out. The will to survive and what it takes for one man to survive is amazing.
No need for a bookmark............2007-07-21
Make some time for yourself because it's going to be very hard to put this down once you start reading! Amazing story and a very well written account. Grab a few tissues and enjoy.
Awesome Story.......2007-07-20
Michael Tougias is exceptionally adept at putting together the histories and events surrounding men and their families that make their living off of the sea. As he did in "Ten Hours Until Dawn", his previous book, Mr. Tougias tells the story in "Fatal Forecast" of men caught in the most violent weather at sea. This fascinating true story of mariners dealing with the worst that nature can offer is a worthy example of the author's ample talent. I would urge anyone that has an interest in the sea to place this remarkable book at the top of their reading list.

Book Description
In California, sea lions wash up on shore starving and malnourished because the unusually rough seas have chased the fish away. Off the coast of Canada, fish float dead on top of an ocean where the temperature is dangerously warm. In Rio de Janeiro, torrential rains turn carnival streets into raging rivers. Mudslides, ice storms, relentless rain, endless flooding, forest fires and more are killing thousands of people, destroying millions of dollars in property and upsetting ecosystems all around the world. The alleged culprit is the mysterious and unpredictable El Ni±o, a climactic phenomenon that seems to defy explanation or definition.
Forecast Disaster: The Future of El Ni±o offers the first comprehensive look at this bizarre catalyst for extreme weather, the turmoil it has unleashed on the world, the myths that surround it and the facts that comprise it. In a style reminiscent of The Hot Zone and The Perfect Storm, Henry F. Porter takes you into the mind of Mother Nature's great mystery and into the minds of the scientists struggling to understand this seemingly inexplicable event.
Customer Reviews:
A Meteorological Cult Classic.......1999-12-12
I'm an earth science teacher and initially shied away from the mass market nature of this text, but I looked over a couple of pages at the pharmacy one afternoon and was hooked. A thorough and thoroughly engaging book about El Nino - everything you need to know. And believe me. YOU NEED TO KNOW.
Porter=Dylan.......1999-02-13
Porter like Bob Dylan crafts a superb detailed synopsis of one of the strangest inexplicable events in recent history. Is the government behind this weather phenemenon? Chapter 4 is very well written, detailing all of the catastrphies in California. Check this out!!!

Book Description
This book deals with the effect of crystal symmetry in determining the tensor properties of crystals. Although this is a well-established subject, the author provides a new approach using group theory and, in particular, the method of symmetry coordinates, which has not been used in any previous book. The author presents applications to technologically important phenomena as diverse as the electro-optic, piezoelectric, photoelastic, piezomagnetic, and piezoresistance effects, as well as magnetothermoelectric power and third-order elastic constants. He also gives attention to "special magnetic properties", i.e., those that require the concepts of time reversal and magnetic symmetry--an important subject not always covered in other books in this area. This book will be of interest to researchers in solid state physics and materials science, and will also be suitable as a text for graduate students in physics and engineering taking courses in solid state physics.
Customer Reviews:
This is a book you need to comprehend the crystal world........2002-03-08
This is a book I would recommend to anybody who wants to comprehend the complex and colorful crystal properties. It takes a stack of books to describe and explain the physical phenomena of crystals and after that you may still wonder why they are so. This book introduces readers to the group representations of symmetry and the derivative properties, making it almost immediately transparent why things appear what they are. Certainly, understanding group theory is not a easy task, you cannot grasp it overnight. The book is organized such that even a person without extensive theoretical physics background will not feel intimidated on what is followed after reading the first couple of chapters. With the right to the point explanations, I found the book not too hard to read, unlike I initially suspected. To my view, this is a book one would have for graduate study in crystal physics or professionals who want serious comprehension of crystal properties. The weak area of this book, as indicated by another reviewer, is probably the lack of extensive numerical examples. However, giving the fact that this is a topics for graduate students and trained professions in science and engineering fields, I would give this book a two thumbs up.
A book on Crystal Physics you may want to contemplate to buy.......1999-09-25
I, recently, borrowed this book from the library and read it. It reminds me the book by Banvangataman (I hope I spelled the name right, I am sorry if I didn't) which also introduces the reader to the application of group theory to crystal physics. The scope of the book is adequate to familiarize the reader with all the main aspects of Crystal Physics and, therefore, the author warrants proper credit for having done a good job. I shall not go into detail of the chapters covered in the book since the treatment is, in my opinion, standard. The explanations and comments throughout the text are to the point. The presentation is clear and easy to comprehend. My only concern about this book is that it lacks numerical examples and solved problems. Group theory and even its applications are very abstract to fully grasp. As a result, the uninitiated reader can find it very difficult to study this subject without reviewing a lot of examples and without working on problems. Regrettably, the book lacks to fulfill the task of presenting the topics to the reader with solid "real life" examples. Hence, this book would not be a very useful textbook. If you are particularily interested in Crystal Physics it might be a good idea to add Dr. Nowotny's book to your collection. On the other hand, if you are planning on learning Crystal Physics via Group Theory, I would suggest you borrow the book from a library, thoroughly inspect it and, then decide on the purchase.
