    Book Description

Measurement of Cardiac Deformations from MRI: Physical and Mathematical Models describes the latest imaging and imag analysis techniques that have been developed at leading centers for the visualization, analysis, and understanding of normal and abnormal cardiac motion with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The use of MRI in measuring cardiac motion is particularly important because MRI is non-invasive, and it is the only modality capable of imaging detailed intramural motion within the myocardium.
Biomedical engineers, medical physicists, computer scientists, and physicians interested in learning about the latest advances in cardiovascular MRI should find this book to be a valuable educational resource. In particular, it is more tutorial in nature than most of the technical papers where the research was originally published. Practitioners and researchers working in the field of cardiovascular MRI will find the book to be filled with practical technical details and references to other work, enabling the implementation of existing methods and serving as a basis for further research in the area.

          Book Description

The topic of this book is the study of singular perturbations of ordinary differential equations, i.e., perturbations that represent solutions as asymptotic series rather than as analytic functions in a perturbation parameter. The main method used is the so-called WKB (Wentzel--Kramers--Brillouin) method, originally invented for the study of quantum-mechanical systems. The authors describe in detail the WKB method and its applications to the study of monodromy problems for Fuchsian differential equations and to the analysis of Painlevé functions. The volume is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in differential equations and special functions.

              Book Description

Among the theoretical methods for solving many problems of applied mathematics, physics, and technology, asymptotic methods often provide results that lead to obtaining more effective algorithms of numerical evaluation. Presenting the mathematical methods of perturbation theory, Introduction to Asymptotic Methods reviews the most important methods of singular perturbations within the scope of application of differential equations. The authors take a challenging and original approach based on the integrated mathematical-analytical treatment of various objects taken from interdisciplinary fields of mechanics, physics, and applied mathematics. This new hybrid approach will lead to results that cannot be obtained by standard theories in the field. Emphasizing fundamental elements of the mathematical modeling process, the book provides comprehensive coverage of asymptotic approaches, regular and singular perturbations, one-dimensional non-stationary non-linear waves, Padé approximations, oscillators with negative Duffing type stiffness, and differential equations with discontinuous nonlinearities. The book also offers a method of construction for canonical variables transformation in parametric form along with a number of examples and applications. The book is applications oriented and features results and literature citations that have not been seen in the Western Scientific Community. The authors emphasize the dynamics of the development of perturbation methods and present the development of ideas associated with this wide field of research.

                Book Description

This book is aimed at researchers and students in physics, mathematics, and engineering. It contains the first systematic presentation of a general approach to the integration of singularly perturbed differential equations describing nonuniform transitions, such as the occurrence of a boundary layer, discontinuities, boundary effects, and so on. The method of regularization of singular perturbations presented here can be applied to the asymptotic integration of systems of ordinary and partial differential equations.

                  Book Description

This book is a revised and updated version, including a substantial portion of new material, of the authors' widely acclaimed earlier text "Perturbation Methods in Applied Mathematics". A new chapter dealing with regular expansions has been added, the discussion of layer-type singular perturbations has been revised, and the coverage of multiple scale and averaging methods has been significantly expanded to reflect recent advances and viewpoints. The result is a comprehensive account of the various perturbation techniques currently used in the sciences and engineering, and is suitable for a graduate text as well as a reference work on the subject.

4 out of 5 stars Fundamental Tool of the Applied Mathematician.......2007-08-01

This text covers methods for asymptotic expansion for regular and singular perturbation problems. For the non-expert, this is a set of techniques for finding approximate solutions to difficult-to-solve equations. The term "asymptotic" refers to a set of techniques for expanding solutions as series that are asymptotically exact in some limit--either as some small parameter goes to zero or as the number of terms in the series goes to infinity. The term "singular" describes a set of problems where the small parameter, around which an asymptotic series is constructed, multiplies the leading order terms in a differential equation. When this happens the expansions fail in certain time and/or space scales. Applied mathematicians have developed a set of techniques for appropriately rescaling problems at different scales and "asymptotically matching" the solutions at the different scales. Problems of this sort are the domain of this book.

Like all techniques in the basic catalogue of applied mathematical techniques, the subject of this book originates in scientific and engineering applications. In this case, some of the best know applications are in fluid mechanics. In fluids, multiple scales correspond to small-scale boundary layers that occur at fluid-solid (or fluid-fluid) interfaces and large-scale flow characteristics that are apparent for away from interfaces. As outlined in this book, numerous other applications exist as well. Yet this is a math book, not a science book. In fact, it is a fairly heavy-duty math book, dense with nontrivial mathematical concepts. To make matters difficult, relatively simple and innocent looking differential equations often yield terribly ugly and complex expansions.

Kevorkian and Cole present the complex and ugly in an accessible, but not trivializing, way. The text is not intended for non-mathematicians. However, it is possible for the motivated amateur (such as me) to successfully and profitably get through it.

1 out of 5 stars Not recommended as a textbook.......2004-12-15

We used this as the textbook for a graduate course I took last fall semester (Fall, 2003) on multiple scales and singular perturbation methods. What a mistake. It is impossible to learn the subject from this book. In the course we started with regular expansions, which is part of Chapter 1. The style of presentation is: here is a complicated problem and so let's assume this expansion. This is made worse by the use of hard to read notation (superscripts on top of superscripts, the overuse of * and + in the super-superscript position, etc). Moreover there is little explanation as to why choices are made and this made doing homework very difficult. It was fortunate we were able to find other books that did explain how to use perturbation methods otherwise many of us would have dropped the course. I can not recommend this book.

                  1 out of 5 stars Tedious Perturbations.......2004-12-14

This is an expanded version of an earlier text by the second author (Cole). The latter was clearly written, to the point, and a useful resource. The same cannot be said of this book. It obscures the ideas underlying perturbation methods with excessive detail on problems of marginal interest. It also, oddly, fails to adequately explain a fundamental method such as multiple scales. Their explanation of how and why scales are selected misses the point completely. This is odd as the authors made contributions to the early development of this method and, as pointed out by the other reviewer, this is the main focus of the book. I would not recommend this book, even as a second or third text on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Text in Perturbation Methods.......2000-09-14

A classic in singular perturbation techiques, this book should be on the shelf of every applied mathematician. It's focus is mainly upon multiscale methods, although a brief review of regular perturbation techniques is present. The author's carefully develop the theory of multiscale methods and provide numerous applications to real world engineering and scientific problems. While I would not recommend this as a first book on perturbation theory due to it's complexity and at times dense notation, anyone who is serious about singular perturbations should buy this book.

                        Book Description

                        Lights! Camera! Ultimatum!

When movie studio publicity V.P. Alexis Manning's fiancé -- Jewish bartender/actor David a.k.a. Deke -- goes home with her for a holly jolly Christmas in Vermont with her family, there's a chill in the air and it ain't just the weather. Overwhelmed by the Christianity of it all, David confesses that he can't marry Alexis unless she converts to Judaism. Alexis might not know exactly what she wants to do with her life...but she knows she doesn't want to spend it pretending to be something she's not. Alexis believes in only one religion -- movies. So with her well-scripted romance on the cutting-room floor, she begins replaying favorite film scenes in her head and breaking down her own life into dramatic clips, searching for the right ending. If only she were Julia, or Demi, or Meryl, things would be different.

                        Get me rewrite!

Is Kirk, the hot new director of her latest project, meant to be Alexis's leading man? Or are she and David headed for a dramatic act-three reunion? And what of Andrew Sullivan -- the proverbial One That Got Away? Between film festival dramas, uncontrollable actors, egotistical directors, a heartbroken sister, an ailing, peculiar cat named Little (and her accompanying astronomical vet bills), and fantasies about simpler times back in New England, it's all Alexis can do to keep production on schedule. But surely there's a happily ever after for her -- and hopefully for Little, too -- before credits roll.

5 out of 5 stars No, it's NOT another chick book!.......2006-04-07

A very funny, well written, Hollywood insider account of life and love in LA with only a microwaved buritto at home. It's not a chick book about breaking up when you are 30- something, but rather a true account of being single with a great job, good friends and a lot of questions of what life and love is really about. Women should read this book because it's good and because it might give a new perspective. Men should read this book because it does a great job of getting into the mind of a 30-year old woman. Great job Tracy!

This book is not so much about intercultural relationships or movies. It is about pets, pet-obsession, abscesses, tumors, infections and revolting habits of said pets. Not two pages go on without at least a mention of the annoying creatures.
The characters are all pretty stereotypical and their behavior is repetitive and predictable.
A couple of interesting situations are stretched out incredibly thin. And the pets take on the scene again.
                        Priceless: the "Dali" Lama typo.
                        A big disappointment.

I really enjoyed the way this book was written, and the humor and emotions put into it! It felt more like reality than fiction! I highly recommend others to read as well as enjoy this book!

The title of this book was misleading; I thought it would be about a Catholic woman's relationship with a Jewish man and the humorous or bittersweet culture clash.

Instead, Alexis Manning, our protagonist, breaks up with her Jewish boyfriend pretty early into the story. The novel is about how she moves forward from the breakup. The breakup is depicted as a long, gradual process. The author writes, "That was the beginning of the end," "That was the middle of the end," and "That was the end of the end" at different
                        points in the story.

The book suffered from lack of a plot. Nothing much happens, aside from the day-to-day business of Alexis' job as a Hollywood publicist. This seems to consist mostly of reading lists of phone messages and doing damage control when a celebrity does something unsavory. The other plot thread involves Alexis' cat, who is highly susceptible to infections and is always developing boils that need to be lanced. The author makes a clumsy analogy
between Alexis healing from the breakup and the cat healing from all its ailments.

If you're thinking this doesn't sound like a great book, you're right. However, it has its moments. The author clearly knows her movies, and Hollywood PR. And she has a gift for describing characters in a quick, memorable fashion: "Sara-Anne said 'Y'all' and 'I'm fixin' to' and had an IQ of 163. She inhaled chitterlings, fudge and foie gras and weighed 105
pounds. When she needed a shower, she said, 'Damn, I am gamey.'"

In short, if you want to read about the life of a Hollywood publicist, or you're going through a breakup, this may be the book for you.

3 out of 5 stars Confessions of a Nervous Shiksa.......2005-08-19

Initially when I started reading this book I wasn't sure I was going to finish it. It was very depressing, (yeah, I know that all break ups are depressing but...) and the main character seemed very shallow. The fact that she was also mean to the poor dog with cancer was something I just couldn't get past, hence 3 stars. I started to get bored by her continual self pity and the movie scenes but them I began to find them interesting. I also found myself rooting for her to find someone and be happy (Kirk maybe). Then when she decided to go life without men for a while I realized that maybe she had learned something from her rough time. Maybe she had grown up. She wasn't as shallow and self centered as I had initially thought.
