Outstanding Photographic Artist.......2006-03-01
I purchased a copy for a really great price but would have easily paid quadruple. This was a great find and subsequently I have purchased additional copies as gifts.
The photography in this book is amazing, unlike anything else I could find on store shelves. The detail, color and printing make this photographic documentary a must have for your coffee table. This view into the architectural magic of Chicago is the next best thing to visiting.
Book Description
Battle Atlas of the Falklands War 1982 from the occupation of South Georgia and the Falklands Islands/Malvinas by the Argentines, the assembly and dispatch of the British Task Force, to the reconquest of the islands. Book Description
The Practical Test Standards (PTS) series guides student pilots, flight instructors, and FAA-designated examiners through checkrides, the final test in acquiring a pilot license. Each PTS guide details the skill and knowledge that must be successfully demonstrated before an examiner can issue a certificate or rating. The knowledge requirements detail which subjects will be covered-which weather reports and forecasts candidates will be asked to analyze, which physiological conditions (such as dehydration, spatial disorientation, and hypoxia) candidates will need to discuss, and what kind of flight planning exercises will need to be demonstrated. The skill requirements include what kind of takeoff and landing must be performed, such as crosswind or short-field; how a steep turn should be executed, with specifics that include what bank angle and airspeed to use; and what areas will be tested on a continuous basis, such as the checklist usage, positive exchange of flight controls, and crew resource management. The tolerances are defined so the candidates know what altitude, airspeed, headings, and banks must be maintained to complete each maneuver successfully. Each PTS guide lists the knowledge and experience prerequisites for a particular certificate or rating and provides background information and study and reference materials.

STRIKE HARD. STRIKE FAST.
STRIKE FEAR INTO THE HEART OF THE ENEMY.
They operate by sea, air, and land, descending from the night sky, rising from the ocean depths, striking their targets with deadly efficiency, then vanishing into the darkness from which they emerged. From the dank jungles of Vietnam to the tropical shores of Panama to the blistering sands of Saddam Hussein's Iraq, the U.S. Navy SEALs have become the most fearsome special operations force in the world, living by the motto "The only easy day was yesterday."
In this unparalleled account of the origin, evolution, and future of this revered military elite, Orr Kelly brilliantly reveals their tactics and their methods, their past triumphs and scandals, including the celebrated Richard Marcinko (Rogue Warrior) case. Brave Men-Dark Waters leads us into the shadowy realm of danger and deception where SEAL commandos live -- and sometimes die -- by their own rules.
Customer Reviews:
Flawed effort.......2002-09-15
This otherwise solid account of naval special warfare (NSW) history is marred by two severe flaws: understating the roles of Scouts & Raiders and Capt. Phil H. Bucklew in NSW history, and providing an inaccurate account of SEAL origins.
Though Orr Kelly used Capt. Bucklew's oral history, he did so selectively and exclusively. Therefore, readers aren't told that S&Rs were always part of the amphibious force, earned 8 Navy Crosses for Opn TORCH; that they participated in every European theater landing, trained counterpart units such as the 6th Ranger Bn, worked with guerrillas in the Balkans (later in the Philippines & China); that Bucklew earned 2 Navy Crosses & a Silver Star for missions at Sicily, Salerno & Omaha Beach, then went on to become 1st CO, NavOpnsSupportGp, Pacific, supervising SE Asia ops for UDTs, SEALs, boat units and Beach Jumpers, then on to the Pentagon, in charge of all NSW ops. Which is why the Navy named its NSW Center building after Captain Bucklew.
In Ch. 6 we read that SEAL teams were established as the result of a letter to CNO written by UDT-22 CO, LCDR Bill Hamilton, circa June 1961; that as a result he was assigned to a CNO office overseeing SEAL establishment. In fact, months before Hamilton ever arrived there, the Navy had already discussed & approved SEAL mission profile, training, manpower, equipment, etc. Authorization was preordained. So, Hamilton entered a fait accompli situation & became part of the team effort, working for Capt. Harry S. Warren.
Roy Boehm was never "acting commander" of SEAL Team 2, nor did he send men to special schools beforehand. That came AFTER ST-2 was established, which occurred on 8 Jan 1962. Like Hamilton, Boehm was part of a team effort to get ST-2 underway.
SEAL Team 1, LT David Del Giudice CO, was established 1 Jan. 1962, thus becoming the first SEALs.
For documentation of the above, see "What A Tangled Web we Weave" in the 2nd Qtr 2002 UDT-SEAL Assn. mag, THE BLAST.
Chronology.......2002-01-08
I have read this book and it provides a documented history with names, places and times from DOD, and firsthand accounts of actions SEALS have participated in (including Viet Nam,to Patilla Airstrip, Panama, later in ODS. It finishes with the conclusion that there is a dilemma as to where the future of SpecWar is going. The individual chapters make great short period reading.

The essential "History of the Navy SEALs".......2000-05-16
There are a lot of books on the SEAL teams out there, but unfortunately most are largely fiction. This is as good as it gets. Orr Kelly has done an outstanding job getting inside this closed community, as evident in his spot on terminology. The chapter on the invasion of Granada is one of two sources used in just about everything written on that incident. From a research/historical perspective, this book is worth the price for that chapter alone. No Special Ops library is complete without it.
Strong Stories.......2000-04-21
I thought this was a good book because of the consistant storylines. The experiences of these men were similiar yet distinctly different. I especially enjoyed reading about the "Fire in the Gut" determination that it took for each man to complete the BUD/S training and how this carried over into SEAL operations.
Decent historical account.......1999-04-08
While the book didn't keep me awake at night like others, it was a decent historical account of the SEALs. It gives important and relevant perspective, drawing from many sources, which I believe adds to the credibility of the book and author. It provides details of specific missions, but in a historical, rather than a story telling way. In other words, if you're looking for a book that deals specifically with the stories of the individual missions, this one isn't for you. It gets into the politics behind the SEALs a bit and is a good first SEAL book to read.
Book Description
The United States Navy SEAL Teams were founded in 1962, on the order of President John F. Kennedy, but they have a reputation as one of the best Special Forces units in the world. The U.S. Navy SEALS tells the story behind these Sea, Air, and Land (SEAL) specialists. It describes the full combat record of the SEAL Teams, detailing their organization, equipment, uniforms and insignia. Over 200 photographs and illustrations are included.

Wonderful Children's Book.......2000-04-06
If your child is interested in dinosaurs and their lifestyles, I highly recommend this book. It's filled with stories about different dinos, and is very easy to read. I remember when I was little, I read this book from cover to cover at least 20 times!

This book contains a selection of lectures from the first Summer School organized by the Center for Functional nanostructures (CFN) at the University of Karlsruhe. The mission of the CFN is to carry out research in the following areas: nanophotonics, nanoelectronics, molecular nanostructures and nanostructured materials. The aim of the summer schools is mainly to exchange new ideas and illustrate emerging research methodologies through a series of lectures. This is reflected by both the selection of topics addressed in the present volume as well as the tutorial aspect of the contributions.

Book Description
Spence Tailor, a lawyer with an actual set of principals, loves his mama, Rose. Rose—with advanced cardiomyopathy and a rare blood type—is scheduled for a heart transplant. But when the president's heart craps out during a photo op three months before the national election, the White House chief of staff orders the FBI to seize the heart that was going to Rose—all in the name of democracy. But Spence isn't about to let anybody steal what rightfully belongs to his mom. So with the help of his reluctant older brother, they hijack the heart, inadvertently kidnap a beautiful cardiac surgery resident, and take to the road in a '65 Mustang—with all the president's men in potentially murderous pursuit.
Customer Reviews:
Fitzhugh.......2007-09-27
In "Heart Seizure" Fitzhugh has done it again. He is the master of fast paced, frenetic comedy of the zany sort. The irony of it all is, this COULD happen. But read it for yourself!
Transplant a Fitzhugh Book to Replace that Boring Book You Are Reading.......2007-04-06
Heart Seizure isn't as fast paced or surreal as Fitzhugh's previous organ transplant masterpiece novel, Organ Grinders. Heart Seizure is still a great fun adventure, just a bit slower paced. Also check out Fitzhugh's other sensational surreal novels full of Carl Hiaasen type characters - Pest Control(insect exterminator mistaken for hit man), Cross Dressing(advertising man forced to adopt his priest brother's identity) and Fender Benders(hilarious look at the country music industry). His less surreal but still entertaining radio DJ/murder mystery solving adventures Radio Activityand Highway 61 Resurfaced: A Novel are also great reads as well. Check all of Fitzhugh's work.
In Heart Seizure a grandmother (Rose) desperately needs a heart transplant to survive. She's got a rare blood type and is finally at the top of the list for a heart, which is a good thing as she can't last many more days. Fortunately for her someone has died and the heart is ready for her but as she's out cold awaiting surgery her son Spence learns the heart is going to a queue jumper. Spence assumes some rich guy has stolen his mother's heart so decides to steal it back taking a policeman and transplant resident surgeon hostage in his getaway. With his unconscious mum in the back of the car with the hostages, his reluctant brother beside him Spence really has no idea what he's going to do except save his mum. The heart was actually stolen for the president, who the public is told has only fainted but in reality will be dead shortly without the organ. Throw in other corrupt and inept politicians and public servants, gullible and unethical journalists, a determined wife, dim witted CIA agents, Mormons as well as others and you've got another great Fitzhugh adventure.
bizzarre (in a real good way).......2006-06-26
First time with this author and "boy i'll tell ya what" it will not be the last time. this book was absolutely hysterical, it was a believable unbelievable premise. want a good chuckle at the expense of everything that is done in the guise of political correctness, enjoy
Heart Siezure.......2006-05-18
I keep telling you I own it and I loved it but you keep asking my opinion. What's up?
Sure beats HMO care.......2006-05-03
So, are you waiting for that heart transplant through your HMO? Perhaps HEART SEIZURE road maps a better way.
Los Angeleno Rose Tailor, sixty-something and with a bum ticker, is on the list for a donor heart. Rose's situation is complicated by her rare blood type, which means that just any old heart won't do. The good news is that one finally becomes available. The bad news is that U.S. President Webster, also possessing the same blood type, needs one also after having keeled over on a jog past the Reflecting Pool. Too many cheeseburgers, perhaps. So, the FBI confiscates the organ only minutes before citizen Rose is scheduled to begin her restorative transplant. This doesn't sit well with her son, Spence, a struggling litigator who spends most of his time doing pro bono work for lost causes. In an act of desperation, Spence steals back the heart, liberates his sedated Mom out of the hospital, and flees into the Mojave Desert with the reluctant help of his successful banker brother, Boyd, and two hostages: 3rd-year surgical resident Debbie Robbins and gay LA motorcycle cop Officer Bobb. The five are pursued by the CIA and the FBI, both organizations each having an agenda at polar opposite to the other's.
I contend that it takes more talent to write a truly comedic successful novel than a widely popular dramatic thriller because, like men's ties and women's perfume, comedy is perhaps more linked to individual perceptions, and the sight gags seen in the mind's eye have to click. Author Bill Fitzhugh pulls it off commendably well as he escalates absurdity to the point where, Spence having accumulated an ever larger entourage of abductees along the way, culminates a wild ride up Interstate 15 from Barstow by arriving at a Salt Lake City medical center with a busload of Mormon basketball players.
The biggest problem with a literary slapstick farce can lurk in the tall grass of the conclusion, at which point the author must end the action, tidy up loose ends, and return the characters to an unremarkably normal existence. If, as here, the humor has gone over the top, the ending can be a letdown. So it is with HEART SEIZURE to the point that a five-star award is beyond my gift. At least for my taste, comedic literature rates five-stars if less riotous and more subtle as, for examples, the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella and, best ever in my experience, the McAuslan series by George MacDonald Fraser, the latter being based on the author's real-life service in the British Army. But don't let me turn you off from HEART SEIZURE - it's a worthwhile and eminently amusing read.
