            Book Description

The Great Plains of North America is a major global breadbasket but its agriculture is stressed by drought, heat spells, damaging winds, soil erosion and declining ground water resources. The great inter-annual variability in crop production and declining rural populations weaken an economy already highly dependent upon government support. The region’s ecological fragility and economic weakness is attributed by many to removal of its original grass cover. Abandonment of agricultural cropping and restoration of the grass cover is one proposed solution to the region’s problems.

Simulation models suggest that the agriculture and water resources of the Plains may be stressed even further as its climate changes because of global warming, which is due primarily to the emissions of greenhouse gases from fossil fuel combustion. This book explores the possibility that the ecology and economy of the Plains region (and similar regions) would benefit from the introduction of perennial biomass crops. Biomass production and processing on the Plains (possibly aided by genetic engineering) would partially restore a perennial vegetative cover and create new employment opportunities. Biomass also offers a means of reducing fossil fuel use, providing fuel to local power plants and a feedstock for production of cellulosic ethanol, a gasoline substitute. Interest in biofuels is growing rapidly in public, political and business circles with rising fossil fuel prices and because of a growing recognition of the need for energy independence in petroleum importing countries.

                Book Description

This research focuses on the possibilities for combining the introduction of the new or revised energy performance regulations required by the EC Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) with incentives to encourage the use of renewable energy. It reflects the results of the European research project Build-On-RES that studied the track record of possible incentives and developed recommendations for creating synergy between the promotion of renewable energy and the implementation of the EPBD. Both technical solutions as solutions in the context of energy performance regulations have been studied. The results of the research show that the introduction of (reviewed) energy performance regulations can pave the way for, amongst others, extra incentives for renewable energy, such as a 'renewable energy' accreditation to accompany the energy certificate; or an explicit indication of the share of renewable energy in the output of the energy performance calculation.

                  Book Description

The aim of this book is to highlight the great potential of decentralized (i.e. local or urban) energy policies in achieving environmentally-benign developments for modern cities. Urban sustainability is placed in the context of the debate on global sustainable development. A wide array of policy initiatives is discussed and evaluated, ranging from market-based energy policies to technological innovation policies for the energy sector. A theoretical framework for technology adoption processes is developed and empirically tested. The main question addressed is: which are the critical success factors for successful urban energy policies? This question is also dealt with in a meta-analytic context by assessing and comparing the performance of energy policies in various European cities, with a particular view to renewable energy.

                    Book Description

Advancing towards sustainable development will be impossible without the active participation of informed and aware citizens and decision-makers. This publication will provide the unspecialised decision-makers, citizens, students and policy-makers of the future, with significant information about a dynamic sector-energy- and a space-city- that are critical for sustainability. Cities and the energy field are now on the verge of dramatic changes. Urban energy systems are capital intensive and have long lives. Immediate change is difficult and innovation is crucial for inefficient patterns to be transformed into more intelligent systems. Strongly entrenched ideas start to vacillate and new investments challenge the inertia of old infrastructures. New concepts, values and technological breakthroughs emerge, linked to policy and market initiatives, public expectations and scientific developments.

                      Book Description

Modern energy systems give rise to the bulk of greenhouse gases and other air pollutants which threaten the environment. Energy has therefore become a central focus of debates on sustainable development. This book explains the fundamental aspects of the energy issue and suggests ways to achieve a more sustainable energy future. A leading team of writers describes the importance of energy within the sustainable development debate and outlines the historical and current patterns of energy use in Australia and internationally. The book also assesses the scope for energy conservation, explores the potential for renewable sources of energy, and analyses policy options for promoting more sustainable patterns of energy use. Finally it surveys the possibilities for energy reform in Australia. Sustainable Energy Systems presents the broad spectrum of debate to non-experts for the first time. It emphasises the urgent need to reform patterns of energy use in Australia and around the world if we are to live in an ecologically sustainable and humanly desirable future.

                        Book Description

                        * Groundbreaking research into the changes taking place in urban infrastructure and management
                        * Examines the ways in which flows of energy and materials through cities can be made more productive and sustainable
                        * Major study for academics and professionals involved in urban planning and management
Examines the mounting pressures for change on the infrastructure of cities - in particular the utilities for water, energy, sewage and solid waste. These pressures come from different quarters - liberalization and privatization of the markets for services, tighter environmental standards, new economic incentives, competing technologies, changing consumption patterns causing overuse or over-capacity. Achieving sustainable energy and resource use is vital if cities are to thrive or even function.
The authors show, on the basis of thorough coverage of a number of European cities, how much potential improved management of infrastructure holds for the improving environmental and service quality. More efficient technology has a part to play, but the really significant improvements in quality of life will be delivered when the flow of material and energy through a city is focused on achieving these goals in each city's local context.

                            Book Description

Physics of Strained Quantum Well Lasers provides an extremely detailed, accessible, and clear account of the fundamentals of the subject. This self-contained presentation progresses from strained quantum well bandstructure to device physics. It is specifically tailored to the background and needs of incoming graduate students in electrical engineering and physics, as well as industrial research and development engineers. Only a standard undergraduate knowledge of quantum mechanics, solid state physics, and electromagnetism is required. No prior familiarity with lasers is needed.
The first chapter of Physics of Strained Quantum Well Lasers is a mini-course on advanced quantum mechanics, and explains the most important techniques. Perturbation methods, both time-independent and time-dependent, are developed in detail, making the rest of the material much easier to understand. In later chapters, particular attention is paid to some of the most challenging and important topics, such as the k·p theory, the deformation potential theory, the multiband envelope function approximation, field quantization, and the emission and absorption of light in quantum wells. These core topics apply widely, both to quantum well lasers and to other electronic and optoelectronic devices.
Physics of Strained Quantum Well Lasers will allow the reader to progress systematically through the text and emerge with enough knowledge to successfully understand and model strained quantum well lasers.

This book is broad, general and extremely thorough, by far and away the most thorough and easy to read of the six books I have read on this subject. The introduction says it all by claiming that the most difficult part to understanding semiconductor materials is the quantum mechanics, and Loehr gives the reader an extremely firm grounding in the necessary quantum theory. Also the sugested reading at the end of each chapter is a superb idea.

This Loehr guy is a whiz! This book filled a much needed void in my education. I barely finished high school but now I'm performing the multiband envelope function approximation on my own. This is what I call solid state physics for the masses!

If this guy wrote a book about Stonehenge or Druids I would probably understand them too!!

                                Book Description

With Mae West as her ingenious guiding spirit, Erika Krouse introduces us to thirteen young, single, geographically and emotionally nomadic women looking for self-knowledge and trouble.

"I like to sleep with other women's husbands," says the narrator of "The Husbands" by way of introduction; unfortunately, one of those husbands is her own sister's. In "Drugs and You," a lonely woman hits a heroin addict with her car and falls blindly in love. In "No Universe," Stephanie deals with her own infertility while watching her friend (who calls children "yard apes") grapple with an abortion and then a guilt-induced pregnancy. These smart, quick-witted women strive for the unflappable sass and strength of Mae West, but often fall prey to their own fear and isolation.

Krouse's perfect comic timing acts as a tribute to her muse, Mae West, pop culture's original liberated woman, giving these stories their fresh, offbeat perspective. Potently witty, neurotic and nervy, the collection marks the arrival of an irresistible new voice in fiction.

This was an amazing book that changed my life and my view of contemporay literary fiction. I wait with baited breath for her next work.

I'm not a short story reader but I've been looking for material for women outside of the chick lit genre. I'm so glad that I discovered this gem of a book! (sorry for the cliche, not sure how else to convey my enthusiasm)
The writing is succinct and gorgeous. The author perfectly captures these uniquely female experiences while somehow (I'm sure skill is involved) interchanging humor and compassion. I laughed at some things I'm sure I'm not normally supposed to laugh at. And a beautifully rendered paragraph put me in the shoes of a battered woman more effectively than anything else I've encountered.
I'm quite certain that all my girlfriends and their friends need to read this one.

Love this book or hate it, it's great literature. I love it. These inspired stories are crystal-clear and snap with wit. But they're not for the faint of heart. You won't find bubble-gum-Oprah-chick-lit-heartwarming pablum between these covers. These characters struggle with controversial issues like abortion, risk, domestic violence, drugs, and family, and they do it in a way that reminds me of me. I like these characters -- I read this book twice in a row. If you're looking for easy answers, read The Girl's Guide to Hunting and Fishing -- if you want to relate to (fictional, but) real women and their struggles, read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious, with backbone.......2004-05-11

These stories had me laughing out loud, then later on I'd find myself pondering the issues they raised. I think this book is written for women like me -- intelligent women who work and try to make some sense out of their strange lives. Plus, Krouse is FUNNY. Her humor is smart and quirky, and you feel like she's telling you stories over a beer. I, for one, am thrilled. I've found a new favorite author.

                                1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-02-17

I really expected to like this book. While the stories are certainly witty and the humor dark, I found the underlying anger and bitterness of every character too much to take. None of the characters seems to be able to relate to society very well, and while that can sometimes make for an interesting read (think the Bell Jar, or even Catcher in the Rye), these characters just seemed pathetic to me. I found them all to be bitter and defensive and I was totally unable to relate or even empathize with them. I was not expecting saccharine, happy Hollywood-type endings to these stories (that may have been even worse) but the only emotion this book evoked for me was annoyance.
