Allen's Basic Anatomy Manual.......2000-10-23
I have used this book for years. It seems to be one of a dying breed of simple, no glitz science texts. Illustrations are accurate and informative. A few, minor errors have been corrected, actually editing problems. I have never found factual errors. I don't find the large number of unlabelled human skeletal drawings all that helpful. I would prefer a more detailed listing of the cat skeleton.

I liked this book because it make anatomy much easier to retain because of the detailed pictures showing the structures of the body. I'm a visual learner and found this book to be very good in showing me the difference in location between various ligaments and bones etc. I also used the following which is also available on amazon:

This book on quantum phase transitions has been written by one of the pioneers in the application of scaling ideas to many-body systems - a new and exciting subject that has relevance to many areas of condensed matter and theoretical physics. One of the few books on the subject, it emphasizes strongly correlated electronic systems. Although dealing with complex problems in statistical mechanics, it does not lose sight of the experiments and the actual physical systems which motivate the theoretical work.
The book starts by presenting the scaling theory of quantum critical phenomena. Critical exponents for different systems are calculated using both the momentum space and real space renormalization group approaches. The former is developed without the use of Feynman diagrams, allowing nonspecialists to fully appreciate the underlying physics of this method. The case of heavy fermions as an example of systems close to a zero temperature phase transition is presented and discussed in detail. This is also the case of non-Fermi liquid behavior associated with a quantum critical point. Metal-insulator transitions are discussed within the scaling approach. The book ends with a discussion on first order quantum phase transitions, in particular those which occur due to a fluctuation-induced mechanism.

Don't waist your money. From cover to cover Larry Sontag tells about who is watching and how these evil men will use this information against you. I wouldn't mind that if he gave one useful bit of information on how to avoid the problem. I would recommend "How To Be Invisible" by J.J. Luna or "Bulletproof Privacy" by Boston T. Party (although it is out of date, he still gives good advice.) Also "You and the Police" by Boston T. Party is a valuable read.

In a field of poorly written and researched books, this one has an abundance of detailed info on what's going on in the world of personal privacy. Maybe he includes a bit too much revolutionary political zeal, but I found a great deal of practical guidance I can use to secure my private life in these rapidly changing times.

I have read and re-read this practical and very useful book. I continue to reference it regularly and have implimented many of the techniques Sontag recommends. His suggestions regarding computer security have been particularly useful and his in-depth knowledge of banking and finance are right on! I highly recommend buying this valuable book.

This eye-opening and extremely informative book accomplishes two things. First, it alerts the reader to the incredible amount of privacy we sacrifice in our daily personal and business lives. More importantly, you will learn what to do about it! The revelation for me was the fact that privacy and convenience are usually inversely proportional. So some of the tips and techniques will have you saying "oh darn - I can't do that anymore!" Best book ever written on business buying.......2001-05-23
This 8 step process covers all the necessary issues incountered when buying a decent business where you can earn a handsome living like say $300,000 per year. This book is like a mini MBA on business analysis and strategy for dealing with the seller, financing sources, new employees, due diligence, determining if the business is right and professionals like CPAs and Attorneys. I especially like the stategy for dealing with a seller who does not yet know that they should and want to sell there busines. This book should be thoroughly studied and analyzed paying special attention to the exact words used by Mr. Haines. He is a master. I have read this book about 50 times and every time I get something more from it. I am a CPA and now know that I am deal savy and could easily employ these procedures for a client.

It really sucks that this book is no longer available. Lionel Haines is one of the few authors I have ever read, who talked about getting some kind of business other than a SUBWAY shop, MAILBOXES ETC., or KINKO'S COPY. He talks about getting real businesses like machine shops and computer chip recycling. He gives ideas on how to find out how to find out about the business if you know nothing about it. It's a shame he passed away. I would have liked to have met him.

I did not feel this was a page turner or a fast read. I felt I dragged my way through it. I must have missed something with all these other great reviews - I didn't get it. I like fast paced and page turners but this didn't cut it.
Not so Puzzling.......2005-05-27
The way the writer sways back and forth timewise in telling the story is frequently confusing. The many characters introduced are more baffling. Some of them play small parts in the whole yarn yet they are emphasized with an abundance of details. The first three-quarter of the story reads like a soap opera spiced up with puppy love. Most of the dialogues are intriguing and a handful of them are quite hilarious. The mystery itself lacks intensity and suspense. Some oversimplified aspects of crimes involving computers elaborated in the tale might scare part of the technology challenged population. When put into context with identity theft, the uncomplicated procedures involved that are portrayed in the book would easily worry anybody. Nonetheless, the ending is predictably satisfying. It reminds me of an episode on any police investigation series on TV.
A "must have" for your mystery collection!.......2004-06-01
Mitchell "Mitch" Greiff, a Manhattan-based celebrity accountant, is a partner with the firm of Friedman, Greiff, & Slavin. He told everyone he was going for a vacation in Japan. Then he simply disappeared. No one seems to know if Mitch really went to Japan or if he is a victim of foul play. The only facts known is that his vacation was approved by his partners for two weeks, now it had been close to four weeks, and $14 million dollars have disappeared at the same time Mitch did. The money had been electronically transferred out of various clients' accounts. The clients have so much money that they did not even realize a good chunk of their money had disappeared.

Mitchell "Mitch" Greiff, a Manhattan-based celebrity accountant, is a partner with the firm of Friedman, Greiff, & Slavin. He told everyone he was going for a vacation in Japan. Then he simply disappeared. No one seems to know if Mitch really went to Japan or if he is a victim of foul play. The only facts known is that his vacation was approved by his partners for two weeks, now it had been close to four weeks, and $14 million dollars have disappeared at the same time Mitch did. The money had been electronically transferred out of various clients' accounts. The clients have so much money that they did not even realize a good chunk of their money had disappeared.

Fast Read.......2003-12-23
THis was a pretty fast read. The plot is fairly interesting- ugly ducking woman embezzles money form the accounting firm that she works for. We learn about the computer investigation unit of the NYPD, which is more interesting than it appears. We meet a varitety of different characters along the way, and we find out how New York City can be an easy place to get lost in.
I had a few problems with this book.
1) The amount of characters. We are introduced to a lot of didderent people in this book, we start to learn about them, and then they pretty much disappear. I think more attention should be paid to fewer characters.
2) One-dimensional characters- many of the people are very predictable sterotypes- the macho Italian cop, the pampered housewife, the sexy office manager. A few are fine- when every character is cliched it gets a little much.
3) The ending is just not right. It is too pretty. I wanted something more.
4) I didn't like any character in the book. Not one. I had no sympathy for anyone.
But, outside of this, the book is a fast read. The plot is interesting and entertaining. Better than your garden variety beach book. And there is definatley some humor to be found- Block's style of writing is snappy and cute, and wordwise she is not trite at all.

A key provision will prohibit transfer of personal information from Europe to other countries if they lack "adequate" protection of privacy. This is a necessary tool to every person, not only to lawyers, interested to know how the "personal data protection" works in the European Union. You will be surprised with the similarities between the privacy regimes in Europe and the United States, notwithstanding this systems differ in important particulars. The book includes the study of the ways in which restrictive data protection law may clash with free trade agreements signed by the US and the members of the EU, as the World Trade Organization. The book is highly recommended.
