Book Description
This volume describes a comprehensive but simple technique for determination of the intestinal absorptive surface area in mammals of different sizes (from harvest mouse to horse). It is a treatise of research carried out by the author over 25 years in a much neglected area: morphology and morphometry of the large intestine - specifically the caecum of mammals. Over 20 species are considered, at the macroscopic and microscopic levels.

Book Description
Readable and authoritative, Understanding and Preventing Falls provides a guide to the nature and extent of the problem of falls. Drawing on the latest research, the authors outline the combination of environmental factors that commonly lead to falls and explore how to prevent them. The case is made for a multifaceted approach to falls prevention, taking account of the complex interplay that exists between individuals and the environment. Broad in scope, the book is divided into two parts. The first part examines the current state of knowledge and understanding of the causes and prevention of falls, with chapters on human ambulation and balance on level surfaces and on steps and stairs followed by chapters exploring vision and the effects of aging. Rounding out the coverage, the second part contains a series of case studies illustrating how falls occur in different circumstances and varying approaches to their prevention. While there have been reductions in the number and severity of injuries from other causes over recent decades, the incidence of injuries from falling has remained consistently high. However, many falls are preventable. This unique resource supplies a concise overview of how to minimize the occurrences of slips, trips, and falls in a variety of situations and conditions.
Book Description
There has been a revolution in neuroscience over the last ten years, and, as Debra Niehoff shows in the first book to examine violence from a complete biological perspective, now is the right time to consider how we are going to use the achievements of that revolution to reduce the level of violence in our society.
What is this new perspective that Niehoff presents? Simply that by understanding human biology we can control violence in our society. The debate over the roles of "nature" and "nurture" is over. Our genes do affect the likelihood of violence. And so does our mature brain chemistry. And so does our environment, as well as the nurturing we get as children and the social life we have with our peers. Everything affects us, but no one element is the sole determining factor. The real story that biology has shown us is that we recreate ourselves all the time, even as adults. Everything is involved in the ongoing process of life.
Niehoff brings together a wide range of research to show that we understand behavior in a totally unprecedented way, and that our ability to control violence effectively has never been greater. The awful consequences of violence for victims and perpetrators are not an outcome we have to accept. The vicious circle that connects bad genes, bad environment, and bad brain chemistry in a kind of feedback loop can be broken. As Niehoff shows, creating a caring, safe social environment is almost always the first step in halting the train of aggression.
The received wisdom is that psychological disorders such as violent aggression are too complicated, too intractable to be cured. In far too many cases, incarceration is the only solution we live with. But do so many people have to be in prison? Aren't there cheaper, more humane, and more civilized ways of dealing with violence now? Niehoff makes many surprising, fascinating, and provocative observations on the new science of violence.
Niehoff is eminently qualified to present these breakthrough ideas. A Johns Hopkins-trained neuroscientist and a biomedical communications professional, she has composed a book of vision and courage. More than merely a polemicist, here is that rare writer who can objectively and clearly present a whole new area of science and identify its explosive implications. Niehoff has a timely, powerful message. She demands science, and also compassion, in the face of violence.

A Primer for Anger Management.......2001-05-12
This is an excellent book, well written and very intensive for understanding the dynamics involved in aggression. I find this book a primer in anger control and every helping professional must have this one available for their reference.
Found: A Gem Among the pile of Rocks!.......2001-03-20
"The Biology of violence" by Debra Niehoff is the best book on the subject I have read. I've been through over 300 books in the last three months looking for a neuro-chemical link between aggression and violence, specifically "impulsive" aggression, that from which I have, at times, suffered its unpleasant effects.
Niehoff clearly shows her education and scientific background through her writing. This book is throughougly and adeptly referenced down to the smallest detail. Every sentence informs, every page educates. I learned, for example, about the role of serotonin, the master hormone, and norepinephrine, and how they keep each other in check. One controls aggression, the other fear, both having specific receptors which, it is to be discovered, sometimes receive signals from other neurotransmitters and hormones (and also caffeine!). The role of environmental factors is given a fair and impartial comparison in conjunction with the actions of the body's hormones, increasing Niehoff's conclusion and credibility.
There is far too much information to be absorbed briefly; a detailed study is in order, well worth its rewards. I have found this work to be monumental, and while not solving the total violence problem, will at least lead the reader to make better choices at the root: the diet (foods are converted to make certain hormones and neurotransmitters). Also of interest is the treatment of insulin and its role in the body. A complete, highly informative work, unparalleled in depth and understandability by the educated layperson. Top recommendation!
The Biology of Violence.......2000-01-14
As a distinguished Doctor of Pyschology, this is an excellent book in analizing the mind of a....nevermind.
A college sstudent in southern California.......1999-12-05
this is an very good book, the evidence i present from this book in my sociology class leaves the professor annoyed with me.
Indispensable Book.......1999-07-21
I have read widely in neuropsychology and neurobiology over the last five years by necessity. This book is written by an expert with a thorough grasp of her material and the English language. This is a book with the depth needed by professionals (psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, law enforcement, probation, attorneys, judges, etc.) and the accessibility needed by laymen. Niehoff's analogies simplify complex interrelationships. Her analysis is compassionate, realistic, and sound. Her discussion of working memory and aggressive behavior is indispensible for parents of TBI children. Her discussion of PTSD and of the interplay between nature and nurture are lucid and compelling. She has an excellent introduction to brain functioning that readers will readily appreciate. When I consider the strength of the book I felt that the conclusion was somewhat weak; however, this should not deter potential readers. In another books, I would have considered the conclusion strong. I think highly enough of this book to have two copies. One for my bookshelf and the other to loan to those concerned with aggression and violence.
Book Description
Marijuana is the world's most popular illicit drug, with hundreds of millions of regular users worldwide. One in three Americans has smoked pot at least once. The Drug Enforcement Agency estimates that Americans smoke five million pounds of marijuana each year. And yet marijuana remains largely misunderstood by both its advocates and its detractors. To some, marijuana is an insidious "stepping-stone" drug, enticing the inexperienced and paving the way to the inevitable abuse of harder drugs. To others, medical marijuana is an organic means of easing the discomfort or stimulating the appetite of the gravely ill. Others still view marijuana, like alcohol, as a largely harmless indulgence, dangerous only when used immoderately. All sides of the debate have appropriated the scientific evidence on marijuana to satisfy their claims. What then are we to make of these conflicting portrayals of a drug with historical origins dating back to 8,000 B.C.? Understanding Marijuana examines the biological, psychological, and societal impact of this controversial substance. What are the effects, for mind and body, of long-term use? Are smokers of marijuana more likely than non-users to abuse cocaine and heroine? What effect has the increasing potency of marijuana in recent years had on users and on use? Does our current legal policy toward marijuana make sense? Earleywine separates science from opinion to show how marijuana defies easy dichotomies. Tracing the medical and political debates surrounding marijuana in a balanced, objective fashion, this book will be the definitive primer on our most controversial and widely used illicit substance.
Customer Reviews:
Informative and Entertaining.......2007-09-23
This book is perfect for anyone wanting to understand this controversial subject. It provides a very scientific look into many long-standing myths associated with the plant and drops humorous comments along the way.
Understanding Marijuana through the long years of dedicated research of Dr Mitchell Earleywine........2007-09-07
Dr. Earlywine's book "Understanding Marijuana" explains the uses of marijuana on a level that can be understood by all readers. Remaining unbiased, he combines the political aspect to the benefits of decriminalization the substance as well as the harmful effects and beneficial uses. The long term research becomes clear as the author takes you into a world not clearly understood by most in everyday society. This book comes highly recommended to those who can benefit from Dr. Earleywine's years of dedicated research into the variations of the legalization of marijuana and in my opinion, the end of the tireless "war on drugs".
Awesome Overview.......2007-06-09
I first experienced pot at age 16 and soon learned that what little I was told was NOT TRUE. This book lays it out in all its splendor. It is not a harmless drug- but it is the next best thing. The pharmacology section was very useful as it explained the way THC is produced and broken down by the plant. On the way up to THC Cannabidiol is produced. Cannabinol is produced as the plant starts to break down. The medical section is fabulous. I was not aware of its medical applications fully until I became a Medical Assisting Student and was placed as an intern in a Multiple Sclerosis practice. This drug does wonders for them! Few knew about it. More need to learn about it. That and I just love the look of those leaves! They are Serrated!!
Enlightening.......2007-03-13
Yep. Another book that's packed full of research to support this incredible little herb. SIGH! We really need to get "with it" and make this available for health and well being for our people and our planet.
An Excellent resource of factual information.......2007-01-23
With all of the misinformation circulating about cannabis over the last 70 years its nice to have a refreshing, scholarly, intelligent review of the subject. I wish everybody in the country who had anything to do with the War on Drugs - from both sides of the debate, would stop bantering about unsupported nonsense and old cliches about that vegetation and look at the evidence, the history, and see the nonsense that is currently floating unabashedly about on that subject. Thanks Dr. Earlywine for your significant effort to try to get out the facts. Del

Book Description
This compendium of physics covers the key equations and fundamental principles that are taught in graduate programs. It offers a succinct yet systematic treatment of all areas of physics, including mathematical physics, solid state physics, particle physics, statistical mechanics, and optics. In one complete, self-contained volume, author Charles P. Poole provides both review material for students preparing for PhD qualifying examinations and a quick reference for physicists who need to brush up on basic topics or delve into areas outside their expertise.
In this second edition the author devotes two chapters to such regularly needed information as trigonometric and vector identities and special functions. The remaining chapters incorporate less frequently summoned concepts, including Lagrangians, parity, dispersion relations, chaos, free energies, statistical mechanical ensembles, and elementary particle classification. A brand new chapter on entanglement and quantum computing has been added, making this an indispensable resource for graduate students and physicists in both industry and academia.

Book Description
Of Shapeshifters and Skinwalkers....
As long as there have been vampires, there has been the Slayer. one girl in all the world, to find them where they gather and to stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their numbers.
The seedy carnival looks like just the thing to give Buffy and her best buds, Xander and Willow, a break from staking bloodsuckers. Some greasy food, a few cheap thrills -- what more could a Slayer ask for?
But then Buffy senses something evil behind this carnival. Xander and Willow aren't so sure. They don't buy Buffy's notion that the carneys are somehow connected to the corpes turning up around Sunnydale. It doesn't help that her two best friends are each interested in someone at the carnival. Which puts the burden of proof on Buffy.
Can she find out what's going on in time to save her friends?
Or has the Slayer become the prey?
Customer Reviews:
One of the better buffy books.......2006-11-26
I've read alot of buffy books, and I hate to say it, but most of them are not very good. This is one of the better ones. Its very fluffy, written in the typical "monster of the week" style of the first season. What makes it good though, is the characterization. Generally, the problem with the Buffy books is that, even when the plots are interesting, the characters do not act in a way that meshes with their character on the show. In this book, I found the characterizations very believeable. Willow is very cute, with her shy, ocnservative mannerisms, and Xander is goofy as ever. I like the dynamic between her and Xander. Its a decent book, and I would reccomend it to a Buffy fan.
"Yeah, I'm a Freak Like You!".......2004-09-03
Set in season one of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," author John Vornholt brings two new elements to Sunnydale - a travelling carnival and a pack of strange coyotes. Buffy, Xander and Willow are excited about the presence of a carnival to finish off the summer and soon Xander and Willow are hooked up with two exotic carnies, Rose and Lonnie. Buffy however, is distracted by the presence of a pack of coyotes roaming through the streets of Sunnydale. Although Willow insists that this is a normal occurrence, Buffy isn't so sure, especially when she sees the coyotes hanging around the grave of an old Western cowboy entertainer named Spurs Hardaway.
After some research, Buffy and Giles learn that Spurs claimed to be able to change into any animal after learning the Native American skills of "skinwalking", and after she finds some conclusive evidence, Buffy realises that the carnies are the pack of coyotes that plan to resurrect their old leader under the Coyote Moon. Finding some surprising aid from an elderly carnie named Hopscotch, Buffy rushes to find Xander and Willow and convince them of their dates' true identities. But now the werecoyotes are on to Buffy...
"Coyote Moon" is a reasonably entertaining Buffy-book, nothing spectacular, but retaining a sense of coherency and interest - plus a few unforseen twists and a good use of the werecoyotes' powers (that is, they don't just have them for the sake of having them - they *use* them to add to the completion of the story). One thing of interest in particular stuck out for me which may or may not have been intentional - right before Buffy sees the coyotes for the first time, she feels a cramp in her stomach. This harks back to the "Buffy" movie, starring Kirsty Swanson, told that cramps in her lower abdomen foresaw the arrival of danger - to which she replied, "Great, my secret weapon is PMS." This Slayer power was disregarded in the television series, but Vornholt's little comment suggest it was not completely forgotten.
If you are a fan of the show, you'll know how terrible Buffy is at lying and undercover work, whether it was the hopelessly obvious trench-coat and sunglasses she wore in "I Robot, You Jane", or the babbling she did at the door of demon-Ken's Family Home in "Anne" before she just gave up and slugged her way in. Here, John Vornholt instigates this lack of talent wonderfully, as throughout the course of the story Buffy has to scrabble for excuses and alibis, leading her to pretend she's about to throw up, claim that Xander is her boyfriend, and insist that she's a witch at different points throughout the story.
There is however some rather sloppy writing and characterisation in the story, which prevents it from being a must-read Buffy book. For example, Vornholt describes Buffy awakening at four in the morning to the sound of coyotes killed a small domesticated dog. She rushes out to comfort the weeping owner, and then is said to be "amazed that nobody else had come out to witness this dramatic scene." Er, it's four in the morning, Buffy - they're all asleep! Later, at the climatic finish in the graveyard Willow watches the bear-skinned corpse of Spurs Hardaway break through his grave. On him the pelt ripples as he begins to morph into the body of a bear, but Willow thinks: "it must be static electricity." For heaven's sake, she's just seen the carnies change into coyotes and the corpse rise from the ground - why is she *still* trying to find a rational explanation? Oy.
This leads to my second complaint, and that's the characters of Willow and Xander. This is set in season one, and therefore it's assumed that the events that took place in "The Harvest", "Teacher's Pet" and "The Pack" have already occurred. Since these episodes also included dates luring them to the cemetery, a femme-fatale shapeshifter, and people getting possessed by the spirits of animals, Willow and Xander's behaviour throughout the book come across as thoroughly stupid. Are we really meant to believe that after all their experience they're going to go with two suspicious carnies to a graveyard in the middle of the night? No way.
Last of all, the ending is rather anti-climactic and abrupt. Buffy kills the head-villain within one paragraph and with no trouble at all, and the final resolution of the situation makes no sense. Standing in the remains of the carnival, Buffy claims that with Spur's death the power of the skinwalkers is gone. How she knows this, or how this actually occurs is not explained, and is further complicated by the fact that she then turns to see a coyote (implied to be Hopscotch) on the crest of a hill. So...how come the curse wasn't broken for him? In both cases, we are severely short-changed when it comes to the ending.
So despite great descriptions of a carnival, a reasonably interesting premise, and a funny sequence involving a heckling clown and a dunking pool, I'd give "Coyote Moon" two and a half stars. Read it if you're in a hurry or just want some extremely light holiday reading.
The Skinwalkers Come to Sunnydale.......2004-06-29
COYOTE MOON by John Vornholt is the third Buffy The Vampire Slayer book and the second all-new adventure. Like the previous volumes this was a very well-done book. I don't know if the series has a better bible than others but so far all of the characters act just as they would be expected to on the show.
At the end of Summer a carnival comes to Sunnydale. Shortly after that, coyotes are seen closer to town than usual. Buffy starts to get the wiggins about the carnival and finds some minor evidence that they are involved in something not normal. Eventually a plot involving werecoyotes and skinwalkers is revealed. Unfortunately for the townsfolk the plot involves the carnies seducing and slaughtering a number of Sunnydale's young folk. In the end Buffy triumphs and curses are lifted.
While this volume is quite good it is not canonical. The events take place at a time that we now know Buffy was not in Sunnydale. This puts it in a class with many of the Star Trek books. So if you consider this an old episode you missed then it works out quite well. Unfortunately these books are a little hard to find because they are being marketed towards young adults (hah, my 78 year-old father is one of the show's biggest fans).
Tony Hillerman lite.......2004-05-11
I savored this book a little longer than the previous 2. I loved the scene where Willow was playing poker. This book is Tony Hillerman lite. If you've read any of his mysteries, you'll know what I mean.

COYOTE MOON
BY JOHN VORNHOLT (1998)
RATING: 3/5 Stakes
SETTING: First Season (summer)
CAST APPEARANCES: Buffy, Xander, Willow, Giles, Cordelia
ORIGINAL CHARACTERS: Rose, Lonnie, Hopscotch (werecoyotes); Dr. Henshaw (friendly doctor); Spurs Hardaway (villian)
BACK-OF-THE-BOOK SUMMARY
"The seedy carnival looks like just the thing to give Buffy and her best buds, Xander and Willow, a break from staking bloodsuckers. Some greasy food, a few cheap thrills--what more could a Slayer ask for? But then Buffy senses something evil behind this carnival. Xander and Willow aren't so sure. They don't buy Buffy's notion that the carneys are somehow connected to the corposes turning up around Sunnydale. It doesn't help that her two best friends are each interested in someone at the carnival. Which puts the burden of proof on Buffy. Can she find out what's going on in time to save her friends? Or has the Slayer become the prey?"
REVIEW
Coyote Moon, the second original Buffy novel, is a solid if unspectacular story about the arrival of werecoyotes in Sunnydale (disguised as a carnival) and their attempt to resurrect their long-dead leader. Buffy spends most of the novel attempting to gain proof of the carneys' true nature (with Giles' help), while Xander and Willow are seduced by two of the carneys. Xander's terribly luck with the ladies holds out, as his new girlfriend Rose simply wants him and Willow to be the human sacrifices necessary to resurrect Spurs Hardaway, a Buffalo Bill Cody type of Western performer who died exactly a century ago and discovered the secrets of "skinwalking" from an unnamed plains Indian tribe, which allowed him and the other performers to become an animal by donning its skin. After being captured by the werecoyotes, Buffy manages to escape with the aid of Hopscotch, a renegade werecoyote who wants her to stop the resurrection because he was the one who secretly killed Spurs Hardaway to begin with. In her own inimitable style, Buffy manages to arrive at the resurrection just in time to drive a silver knife through Spur Hardaway's werebear form and save the day.
The novel has some strong elements. Xander's teen lust for Rose is depicted well, as are the feelings of love and hurt that Willow feels everytime Xander fails to notice how much she loves him. Also well played is a scene where Buffy interrupts a Xander-and-Rose makeup session, prompting Xander to tell Buffy off. Other highpoints include Xander trying to grow a goatee (failing miserably) and some interesting use of Native skinwalker stories.
Overall, Coyote Moon is a competent addition to the Buffy line and has the feel of a first season episode. It's by no means a page turner, but it also doesn't prompt groans of dismay like some other books in the series.

Book Description
The home of Mother Fox and her three babies is hidden by the roots of a tree stump in a long valley. In the beautiful fields around their home, Mother Fox cares for her children, who are so tiny they fit in the palm of a human hand. She brings them treats to eat, and she leads them to sit on the rocks in the sun.
But Mother Fox must always be wary because an old coyote shares their valley with them. Though he is lonely, the mean coyote searches for food rather than a friend. "After all, this is the way the world works."
One day, Mother Fox takes her babies to the pond to search for food. There, while jumping and frolicking with the bullfrogs in the night, Mother Fox rolls on the ground shaking with laughter. In fact, she laughs so hard that she forgets about the hungry coyote. Soon, she finds herself snout to snout with her biggest fear. Knowing that they cannot run or hide from the coyote, Mother Fox uses her cunning mind to escape. With a little help from the moon and a trick of light, she saves her babies.

The Little Cow in Valle Grande: El Becerrito en Valle Grande
ASIN: 0826337309 |
Book Description
According to Santa Ana Pueblo legend, the animals' spirit Leader created the sun, moon, and stars by using woven yucca mats and hot coals. He selected certain animals to climb from their homes in the Third World up to the Fourth World. The Squirrel, the Rabbit, and the Badger were all allowed to go. The Coyote, however, was forbidden to accompany them because he was always causing trouble and stealing food from the others.
Regardless of what he was told, Coyote refused to stay in the Third World. He found a hiding place and waited for a chance to follow the animals to the Fourth World. When the other animals discovered Coyote, they summoned the Leader to the Fourth World to deal with him. Coyote's punishment is a lesson in what happens to animals, or people, when they refuse to obey instructions.
Writing for the younger reader, Emmett "Shkeme" Garcia, a member of the Santa Ana tribe, shares his Pueblo's story of the beginnings of the stars and constellations. Victoria Pringle's illustrations provide visual elements that enhance the action of the story.
All ages.
The Santa Ana Pueblo creation legend including how Coyote tricked the other animals to join them in our world and how he was punished.

My child laughs so hard.......2005-04-22
Every time I read this to my daughter she laughs so hard it takes a good long while to get her back into a quiet bedtime mood! We originaly bought the book for a friend who lives in the woods and loves animal stories, but we will just have to get her another copy as we cannot part with this one. This is a great book to read out loud and the language, tone and humour make it a joy for both the listener and the reader. It has easily become one of our favorite books in my daughter's library.
Coyote Sings to the Moon.......2002-09-28
This book.. will delight children.. and adults..
It tells a story that will delight and capture your imagination. This was the first book of Mr. Kings I hesitated to purchase. The cost of a children's book I thought was a tad high, and I have no little children around at the moment. But came across it for the 3rd time in one week and decided to purchase it... and after not only being totally delighted with the story, the manner it is written.. I must say I was impressed with the quality of the book it self. This book was made to endure the thousands of times little hands, and old alike will pick it up and become absorbed in this story. It will make you giggle.. chuckle.. and look at the sound of coyote singing to the moon.. in a whole new wonderful way. A true native story... in the most amazing way.. thank you Mr. King

Book Description
All the creatures of the desert gathered to hear the story. Snakes and bats and mountain lions drew near. Then came long-eared hares and prairie dogs and road runners and more. The coyotes began to tell the tale of the world. They sang in praise of nature and how we must nurture the life in the land. It is a timeless message to cherish forever.

Beautiful imagery, poetry, and message.......2003-11-03
This is a book my daughter and I very much enjoy reading together. The illustrations of the nighttime desert are beautiful, and we enjoy finding the rocks shaped like coyotes. The rhymes flow well, don't feel forced like some kids books. And the themes of music, nature, the changing of the seasons, and respect for all life leave me with a peaceful feeling. Make sure to really emphasise the yip, yi, and yo when the coyotes begin to sing :)

Excellent story in poetic form regarding all desert animals........1998-12-15
This book is a lovely story done in expressive, poetic form detailing all the characteristics of the individual desert animals. The pictures are striking, done in many of the warm desert colors. It is an enjoyable read that very easily creates imaginative pictures for both the reader and the listener, enhancing the rich illustrations.
