Since the late 1980s, when the current tide of environmental concern began to rise, every improvement made by the oil industry has been followed by new demands for further progress. New problems have been placed on top of the old ones; first smog in the inner cities and oil spills on the beaches, then acid rain and forest die back followed by major tank disasters and renewed attention to urban air quality and finally, climatic change. The purpose of this book is to investigate whether the oil industry is able to extend and renew its social legitimacy as it faces its toughest agenda in a century the challenges stemming from its impact on the environment and the consequent public questioning of its role in society. To find out whether and how the oil industry has responded to environmental issues in general and climatic change in particular, five indicators of change vision & image, R&D, investments, and government relations have been selected. These have been assumed to be expressions of an environmental strategy which can be identified as reactive, cautious or creative. The empirical analysis begins with case studies of the environmental response of five major oil companies: Shell, Exxon, BP, Amoco and Statoil. The next step is a case study of the refinery sector, which is the most environmentally sensitive part of the industry in many ways. In addition, a brief description of how three industry associations have tackled the same environmental issues is included. The main readership for this book will be policy makers, planners and researchers in the oil industry, and environmental consultants.

The treatment requires no more mathematical background than a course in advanced calculus and mathematical analysis. Problems at the ends of each chapter complement the main text and some serve to extend the material to current research.

This book, unlike "standard" texts like Peskin & Schroeder, deals more with the formal aspects of field theory, and may not be so useful for the person interested in phenomenology. Wilsonian RG is missing too, but it's a great place for an introduction to gauge theory. The misprints can be annoying, but at the same time keep you on your toes. The presentation is somewhat terse, and to work through a page of this book can be equivalent to working through several pages of another book, say Peskin & Schroeder.

A good book to learn Feynman diagrams.......2000-05-12

A reader can learn how to compute the Green's functions and the scattering amplitudes using Feynman diagrams. The scalar Klein-Gordon field is used as a pedagogical example at the beginning. The philosophy of the path integral is used all over the book. However, the book does not emphasize the philosophy of the Wilson renormalization group and in this sense the primer is not modern. Nevertheless, Pierre Ramond is a pretty famous scientist and you can learn many things from this book.

The contents of this book in its English edition summarizes the basic re-search work accomplished by the author on the field of Fluid Dynamics, Magnetohydrodynaics (MHD), Classical Thermodynamics, and Astrophy-sics. Besides, it contains a section attached to each chapter with the title of Selected Topics. In these sections fine theoretical points are cleared up and a large number of illustrative problems are solved. This way the idea is to have readers who use this book as a text book as well as a research monography addressed to all those who study Theoretical Physics and who are interested in the analytical treatment of perfect and real fluids, as much as in the dynamic state of fluids electrically charged which flow in regions where there is a magnetic field, and also fluids at rest proper of Classical Thermodynamics. With this material we wish to facilitate the access to fundamental aspects of Fluid Dynamics, MHD, and Thermodynamics, and the application of these disciplines to Astrophysics. It is assumed that the reader is aqcuainted with Maxwell´s equations of Classical Electrodyna-mics, those of Hydrodynamics balance equations, and the fundamental postulates of Thermodynamics. A reasonable handling of the calculus of variations and the tensorial notation is required, as well as knowledge of the principles and methodology of Lagrange´s Analytical Mechanics. In general terms and from the view point of the required mathematics, the book is self-contained in the sense in which everything that is needed is clearly stated within the text.

Wicked Funny.......2005-12-13

This book was fantastic! I could not wait to see what Clint and Lyle would plan next. Poor Clint could not lose for winning. lol A must read for anyone who has ever worked in an office enviroment, especially cubicles. This book had me laughing so hard I had tears running down both cheeks!

Fast and Funny!.......2005-06-21

Kyuboria is an offbeat and absurdly realistic account of cubicle working. It's sure to crack up anyone who's ever been a state worker, or a cubicle worker. But its appeal translates to anyone who's held an office job. When state worker Clint Palmer discovers that a large grant is available that he could use to start his own business, he gets excited. But there's a catch. The grant is only available to people who've been fired from their job. Easy enough to accomplish, except that the state never fires anyone.

Thus begins Clint's mission to get fired with his escalating schemes that become more outrageous by the day. Fans of the Ron Livingston flick Office Space will definitely appreciate Vitanyi's ironic wit and depictions of office politics.

Easy read -anyone who has worked in a cubicle can relate to!.......2004-11-07

I just finished Mr. Vitanyi's new book KYUBORIA and I must admit to laughing out loud on several occassions!

I myself work in a cubicle for the State and this really hit home. It is a really easy read that I just breezed through in a couple sittings. Hilarious! This book should be a standard accessory in every cube! It's the perfect counterpart to the movie "Office Space." Vitanyi writes about silly every day things that cubicle workers drone through day in and day out, probably without even giving them a second thought.

Someone who has never worked for a state institution may be a bit shocked by some of the tactics that main character Clint Palmer describes here (people regularly sleeping on the job, looking busy while in fact doing nothing, shadowing supervisors, etc.) but oddly enough they didn't seem too far from reality in my experiences!

I honestly can't think of anyone (with a sense of humor) that works in today's world that wouldn't find something to love in Kyuboria! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! And at $10 how can you not take the chance on it? The ending was a bit weak for me and that is the only reason why I didn't give it a 5/5. Vitanyi's other novel "Palm Sunday" was also a great read, and much more serious than "Kyuboria", I recommend it as well.

Can't wait to see what comes out of William R. Vitanyi's head next!
