Handbook of Microbiological Media, Third Edition
ASIN: 0849335604 |
Book Description
The second edition of a bestseller, this book provides a comprehensive reference for the cultivation of bacteria, Archaea, and fungi from diverse environments, including extreme habitats. Expanded to include 2,000 media formulations, this book compiles the descriptions of media of relevance for the cultivation of microorganisms from soil, water, and air. The format allows easy reference to the information needed to prepare media for the cultivation of microorganisms required for environmental analysis, including the determination of water safety. The media are organized alphabetically, and each listing includes medium composition, instructions for preparation, commercial sources, and uses.

I bought this book in hopes that it would aid in my laboratory work, but it wasn't what I was hoping for. I thought it would describe what the media was used for more throughly but it only had a sentence at most saying what I already new. Some media that I commonly use I could not find in this book.
It's great as a recipe book, but like I said, I was hoping it would provide more background and explanations.

Book Description
Society cannot increase beyond its ability to acquire natural resources or to dispose safely of pollutants. One need not be an ecologist or environmental scientist to understand the dangers implicit in an uncontrolled degradation of the environment. Calculating how many people each individual nation should have and determining the means by which politically various populations will be controlled calls for difficult decisions. This book provides a concrete, easily understood, and realistic analysis of the scientific and legal dimensions of environmental stability. Miguel A. Santos outlines the current international ecological crises and defines them as the most serious threat to international world order and ecological stability. The book is divided into five sections beginning with an examination of the ecological characteristics of human population and a discussion of population policies in developing and developed nations. This section is followed by the construction of an analytic framework for the interaction of society with the environment. Further chapters provide an overview of natural resources and pollution and the criteria for determining the earth's carrying capacity for humans. The final section considers the problems and prospects of international law and environmental protection. Although written for ecologists, environmental scientists, demographers, political scientists, economists, and lawyers, this book is not limited to them. Anyone interested in the relationship between the environment and society will find this book instructive and provocative.

Book Description
This book is devoted to the theory of quantum measurements, an area that recently has attracted much attention because of its new applications for quantum information technology. The phenomenon of decoherence of a measured system is investigated and simple techniques for the description of a wide class of measurements are developed. An individual continuously measured (decohering) system is presented by an effective complex Hamiltonian which supplies a phenomenological theory of gradual decoherence.
The work, which features a clear presentation of physical processes leading to quantum measurement (decoherence) and simple mathematical formalisms, concentrates on the physical nature of quantum measurements and the behaviour of measured (open) quantum systems, but conceptual problems are also treated. The analysis of interrelations between different approaches to quantum measurement is given. The methods developed in this volume are applicable for the description of individual continuously measured (decohering) systems, not only to a whole set of such systems.
Audience: This work will be of interest to both researchers and graduate students in the fields of quantum mechanics, metaphysics, probability theory, stochastic processes, the mathematics of physics and computational physics.

Book Description
In this book the process of decoherence is reviewed from both the theoretical and the experimental physicist's point of view. Implications of this important concept for fundamental problems of quantum theory and for chemistry and biology are also given. This broad review of decoherence addresses researchers and graduate students. It could also be used in seminar work.

Book Description
Quantum coherence is a phenomenon that plays a crucial role in various forms of matter. The thriving field of quantum information as well as unconventional approaches to use mesoscopic systems in future optoelectronic devices provide the exciting background for this set of lectures. The lectures originate from the well-known Schladming Winter Schools and are carefully edited so as to address a broad readership ranging from the beginning graduate student up to the senior scientist wanting to keep up with or to enter newly emerging fields of research.
Book Description
The development of a consistent picture for the processes of decoherence and quantum measurement requires a treatment which is compatible with the theory of relativity. This volume reviews some of the approaches suggested to solve or circumvent the arising difficulties. Starting from an analysis of the level of compatibility of the measurement problem with the special theory of relativity, the role of non-locality and entanglement are discussed. The subject is also addressed from the point of view of quantum optics and quantum information theory, as well as on the basis of group theoretic and algebraic methods. The emergence of decoherence in quantum electrodynamics is discussed from an open systems perspective.

Book Description
Dissipative Quantum Chaos and Decoherence provides an overview of the state of the art of research in this exciting field. The main emphasis is on the development of a semiclassical formalism that allows one to incorporate the effect of dissipation and decoherence in a precise, yet tractable way into the quantum mechanics of classically chaotic systems. The formalism is employed to reveal how the spectrum of the quantum mechanical propagator of a density matrix is determined by the spectrum of the corresponding classical propagator of phase space density. Simple quantum--classical hybrid formulae for experimentally relevant correlation functions and time-dependent expectation values of observables are derived. The problem of decoherence is treated in detail, and highly unexpected cases of very slow decoherence are revealed, with important consequences for the long-debated realizability of Schrödinger cat states as well as for the construction of quantum computers.

Garp for the new millenium!.......2007-10-02
If you enjoyed "World According to Garp", you'll love this book! Quirky characters, hilarious situations and heart breaking realities. Grabs you from the first page and pulls you in right to the last page. I couldn't put it down.
Never Play Leapfrog With A Unicorn.......2007-09-13
I loved the story "My Lil' Black Dad" and the rest of the book doesn't disappoint. It is funny, gut wrenching at times and extremely well done. It is a deep narrative of a not so average life.
Brilliantly written!.......2007-06-27
I wasn't sure what to expect. I read 'My L'il Black Dad', the first chapter of 'Never Play Leapfrog with a Unicorn' and loved it so much I had to know the rest of the story. WOW! I had no idea it would be this powerful. It made me laugh and it made me cry. I think the humor was intricately interwoven into the parts that were too horrible to even imagine, so the fact that you were able to laugh was a nice relief from the saddening life and pain the author suffered. The author makes you feel at home-as if you can imagine being there even if you didn't grow up on the east coast. I thought it was brilliantly written and can't wait to read more!
Kathy Bates as mom and Steve Bouchemi as dad!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-03-27
I proudly own four of these books. So well written, that I saw it as a movie from first paragraph read. You must own this book before it becomes a movie, because I'm affraid the movie won't do it justice. Awesome job author!!!!!!!!!!

Poignant - somewhat along the lines of Angela's Ashes.......2006-03-26
In a style all his own, this author leads you down the garden path into the briar patch. The story is a barefaced look at a young life lived in the old days of a 1950's poor, dysfunctional, working-class Cape Cod family. I wept for him and laughed out loud with him.
One scene in particular refuses to leave me, I laugh each time it crosses my mind. I can just see the short, rotund neighbor "lady" trotting down the dusty dirt road in pink pumps (he never said they were pink, but they MUST have been), poofs of dust clouds popping up at each footfall, a jowly grin on her face as she anticipates grossing out her busybody competitor.
