Book Description
In just the last few years, the increase in worldwide photovoltaic (PV) shipments has grown from 15 to 25 percent per year. Grid-connected applications have surpassed stand-alone applications, system components have realized significant improvements, and major efforts are underway to build a quality control infrastructure for PV systems. Such rapid growth and evolution continues to put engineers skilled in PV systems at a premium. Thoroughly updated, Photovoltaic Systems Engineering, Second Edition offers a practical engineering basis for PV system design. It provides quick exposure to all system building blocks, then examines both the whys and hows of the electrical, mechanical, economic, and aesthetic aspects of PV system design-why certain designs are done in certain ways and how the design process is implemented. Students mastering the contents of this book will have the engineering judgement needed to make intelligent decisions based on a clear understanding of the parameters involved in PV systems. Highlights of the Second Edition: Y Complete updates to each chapter that incorporate currently available system components and recent changes in codes and standards Y Increased emphasis on design trade-offs and the design of grid-connected systems Y New discussions on site evaluation, and battery connections Y A new section on array mounting system design Y A new section on utility interactive residential PV systems Y A new section on curve fitting using Excel Y A new appendix that presents a recommended format for submitting PV design packages for permitting or design review purposes Y Examples and exercises replaced or modified to incorporate contemporary components, such as the Linear Current Booster
Customer Reviews:
Ok but I passed.......2007-05-16
This book only gives one a cursory look at designing systems but does not get into any practical depth. Most dissapointing was the complete lack of discussion as to the limitations of inverters in regard to their specific input voltage parameters and the matching of modules to inverters. It's a good overview for one who is serious about learning what PV systems are all about but is not detailed enough for practical design and implementation of a functional PV system.
Unique book.......2005-09-01
As with the first edition, this update by Messenger and Ventre is very well suited for a one-semester upper division course in EE or Engineering Technology, or for self study if one knows basic electric (mainly DC) circuit theory. As the title suggests, it's an applications-oriented book, with semiconductor physics (appropriately) relegated to the last two chapters. There are very few derivatives or integrals in the text, and basic algebra is sufficient for the end-of-chapter exercises. Reading 20 pages per day and answering a dozen or so questions from the exercises will get the self-study student through the text in less than a month. PSE is also one of the few books recommended by the NABCEP for the Solar PV Installer Certification Exam. There are a number of excellent PV physics books available today, but this is the only complete and up-to-date systems engineering text I know of.
Photovaltaic by Dr. Messanger from FAU.......2000-08-15
This book has a lot of good information on setting up a photovaltaic systems, I was forced to use it in his Photovaltaic course at FAU in FL. The book has lots of examples on different systems. The problems in the book are a bit to difficult and the answer could not be found in his book.

Book Description
How is the future world energy demand to be met? The rates of use of the fossil fuels coal, oil and natural gas are increasing all over the world. The remaining stocks are finite and are not renewable. This important book considers the various options of renewable energy, including water energy, wind energy and biomass, solar thermal and solar photovoltaic energy. And should the nuclear option remain open? The book examines the environmental implications and economic viability of all fossil and renewable sources, introduces more distant future options of geothermal energy and nuclear fusion, and discusses a near-future energy strategy.
Customer Reviews:
Not a Good Resource.......2007-09-16
I can not recommend this book as a useful resource to learn about energy. There are several reasons:
[Edit a month later] - The more I use this book, the worse I find it to be. Do NOT buy it. It is useless at best, and misleading at worse. If I could give it zero stars, I would. Some of this is due to its age, but unfortunately, not all. I'm finding that it's mainly useful for having students identify what is wrong in it, verses using it as a resource.
1. It is out of date. I don't necessarily mean all of the statistical data provided, which only goes up to 2000. That is understandable given the publication date. Much of the raw statistical data is easily found on-line. However, the book is obsolete regarding some very important energy issues today. An updated edition is needed. For example, it's essentially silent on the huge impact of China's growth since 2000, there are only a couple of paragraphs on ethanol, and it dismisses Canada's oil sands reserves as "not commercially viable". With the climb in oil prices during the last few years, much of its economic discussions are no longer relevant. What concerns me even more is a reliance on references from around 1980 when discussing several technologies. I don't believe that 20+ year-old references belong in a book published about current technology in 2002. As a result, the book ends up discussing some technologies that simply are not relevant today, or discussing them as they were envisioned in 1980.
2. There are an unacceptable number of administrative errors. MANY table and figure references in the text are wrong (e.g., "Table 3-2 shows that..." when in fact it's Table 3-5). Questions at the end of the chapter refer to the incorrect tables. ANSWERS in the back of the book are WRONG at times. I even found one table reference when I could not find the appropriate table anywhere in the book. This goes beyond being out-of-date....it's just down-right sloppy.
3. It's just factually wrong in places, and it makes me worry about what other factual errors I'm missing. Examples: 1) A simple calculation in Chapter 2 is off by an order of magnitude. 2) Chapter 13 defines ethanol fermentation as an aerobic process, rather than anaerobic. 3) The answer key suggests mandatory catalytic converters as a means of reducing carbon dioxide from automobiles, when in fact catalytic converters do NOTHING for carbon dioxide.
I have a feeling that there are no further editions planned for this book....the 2nd edition just seems to update a few charts and there's a lazy feel about it. Some historical material is ok - that won't change. But a new edition needs a serious going-over and updating. I do think that there needs to be a good, concise, organized survey book of energy technologies. Other books I've reviewed are excellent, but they are not as "tight" as I was hoping this one would be.

Book Description
Renewable Energy, first published by Academic Press in 1979, is considered the foundation text for renewable energy studies worldwide. The first edition addressed graduate students and researchers in an attempt to put renewable energy on the map, academically speaking. In 1979 there were no academic curricula in this field at the university level, so the book was targeted at graduate level students and researchers.
Today, the importance of the topic is widely acknowledged. Not only is it taught in engineering, physics and environmental sciences departments, but it is actively researched and studied in many organizations and energy-related industries. The topic of energy policies, where renewable energies play a vital role, is avidly discussed at the scientific and political level. The author has made the
Second Edition more accessible to researchers and students approaching the field for the first time. Each chapter has a general introductory section, but is also followed by advanced topics. This gives university lecturers the flexibility to include advanced topics while at the same time allowing researchers to use the book as a reference work.
Key Features
* Provides the principles of renewable engergy flows/sources and energy conversion processes
* Covers the engineering and economic aspects of the field
* Outlines the expansion of the field since the publication of the first edition
* Remains the most important volume in the field

Book Description
Climate Change is high on the political agenda and the UK Government is committed to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. One of the main means of doing so has been by encouraging the production of energy from renewable sources.
In 2005, when the first edition of Renewable Energy in the Countryside was published, only wind power received sufficient funding to be commercially viable in specific locations and most other renewable sources remained unutilised. Since then however further measures have been introduced to encourage the development of biofuel processing plants and to bring a new focus on the use of biomass. These currently all depend upon the use of land, at a time when incomes from agriculture and forestry have continued to fall so that more farmers and landowners are having to look at alternatives.
This new edition examines the present opportunities and identifies the potential risks and shortcomings, including:
The viability of current policies and the implications for the future
The issue of rising fuel prices
Revised planning requirements for renewable energy in new buildings
Current opportunities for large and small scale wind turbine developments
New economic measures for biofuels, including RTFO and tax concessions
Contracts being offered to growers to supply new fuel processing plants
The threat of imported feedstocks
On farm processing of biodiesel
Current opportunities and constraints for growing and supplying biomass
Small scale biomass boiler systems
New and relatively untried renewable energy comprises a wide range of issues that need to be properly assessed. This book provides that insight.
* Practical text detailing the litigation that may pursue and hinder a progression in to Renewable Energy.
* Providing sound alternatives to Energy crises.
* Giving solid information to Farmers landowners that may affect their businesses.
Product Description
In 1977 President Jimmy Carter declared war on America's energy crisis, "the greatest challenge our country will face in our lifetime". A decade later the war was over, the crisis all but forgotten. A worldwide oil glut had lowered prices at the pump and lulled Americans into believing the country's energy future was bright. In this book the author examines the radical shift in public mood from near-panic to complacency and the no-less-radical shift between the energy policies of the Carter and the Reagan administrations. Every important energy issue of the late 1980s is discussed: the moribund nuclear power industry, the environmental dangers of acid rain and the greenhouse effect, energy exploration on public lands, conservation, and the relative merits of renewable versus conventional energy sources. In explaining U.S. energy policies, the author pays particular attention to the importance of policits and the policy-making process. Rosenbaum argues convincingly that the issue of energy, while receiving scant attention today is a sleeping giant.

Customer Reviews:
Page Turner.......2005-09-27
This fabulous book by Saralee Perel is not only a page-turner, it is a nail-biter. You will have all you can do to NOT flip to the end to find out whodunit. --- Marcia Martin, Brewster
No body does it like Saralee.......2005-09-17
Author Saralee Perel delivers a good read. Right off you'll like the characters, Dr. Sophie Green and her family and clients. The plot builds from there, and keeps the reader guessing who wants her dead.
Hint: It's not who you'd expect . . . Saralee, when's your next book coming out?"
Great new series.......2005-09-14
I loved Saralee Perel's Raw Nerves. Dr. Sophie Green, a hypochondriac psychiatrist, is being threatened, and there are so many suspects. Is it a patient? A colleague? This is a funny, smart, thrilling page-turner, and a great start to a new mystery series. Don't plan on doing anything else once you start this book, you'll want to read it straight through.
Cape Cod in the Off-Season...there's nothing off about this great read!.......2005-09-13
If you've always wanted to know what Cape Cod is like when the tourists, the traffic and the second home owners are gone, you'll find your answers here. Saralee Perel gives a wonderful depiction of off-season life on Cape Cod, complete with shell driveways, cranberry bogs and fishing boats.
Sophie is a real and endearingly sympathetic character, and her husband Dan provides the perfect foil for her neurotic and comic behavior Another Cape Cod reviewer here gives us her "candid" view that she knew "who done it" from the first chapter. Well, despite her saccharine comments, I was on edge right up to the finish. This was a fun, fast read -- and a delight for those of us who recognize the magical Cape Cod settings.
Scary times on Cape Cod!.......2005-09-13
Raw Nerves is wonderful and touching and funny and edge-of-your-seat scary. The characters are real; the good ones are easy to like and the bad ones despicable and the clients are written with respect. I can't wait to read another book about Sophie!
