Excellent for all children.......2007-02-17
I purchased this when my now 6 yr old was 3. In the 3 years that we have owned it, (and we have TONS of books), this is the most beat-up and dog-eared book. Both my children love it. It is very informative without being too overwhelming. The illustrations make it all very understandable. It's one of those books that you can sit down and just focus on one page..or thumb through the whole thing. Because of this book, both my kids have a much better understanding of the human body than most other children their age. (Their grandfather, a surgeon, loves this!). Usborne books are really fabulous
Book Description
This informative and activity-filled reference introduces younger children to human biology in a lively and accessible way. The book's thematic structure makes it easy for young readers to understand the various systems and organs that make up the body.

My daughter of 7 enjoyed my wife's anatomy books and this book was a nice, at her level, book that complimented the college level books.

Book Description
This six volume Encyclopedia is the most comprehensive, detailed treatment of molecular biology and molecular medicine available today!
The Encyclopedia provides a single-source library of molecular genetics and the molecular basis of life, with a focus on molecular medicine. Genetic screening, gene therapy, structural biology, and the technology and findings of the Human Genome Project are discussed in detail.
The articles that comprise the set are designed as self-contained treatments. Each of the nearly 300 articles begins with an outline and a key word section which includes definitions. These features assist the scientist or student who is unfamiliar with a specific subject area. A glossary of basic terms completes each volume and defines the most commonly used terms in molecular biology. Together with the introductory illustrations found in each volume, these definitions enable readers to understand articles without referring to a dictionary, textbook, or other reference.

Cousteau's The Living Sea - GREAT!.......2004-03-03
This is, literally, one of the best books I've ever read. Beautifully written, full of adventure and information. Takes you back to the early days of the Calypso, and details the invention of underwater photography, archaeology, oil prospecting, bathyscaphe diving... the goodies just keep coming. A great world tour of the oceans both above and below, told through the words of oceanographers who are as much poets as scientists.

Book Description
A photographic celebration of the spectacular drama of exotic marine creatures' lives and the otherworldly beauty of the deep-sea ecosystems that shelter them.
Written and photographed by Emmy award-winning couple Michele and Howard Hall, Secrets of the Ocean Realm is more than just a collection of stunning photographs: it is a revelation of the sea creatures' complex and mysterious cycles and patterns of behavior. The reader is presented with striking images of all manner of marine life--sharks, opalescent squid, molting lobsters, dolphins, giant whales--engaged in the vital activities of mating, threat displays, hunting and feeding.
Based on a five-part series of public television specials, the remarkable photographs of Secrets of the Ocean Realm are complemented with fascinating and engaging stories that take the reader behind the scenes and reveal the state-of-the-art equipment and techniques used to capture these exquisite scenes of underwater life.
Customer Reviews:
10 stars for this book.......2004-08-16
This is one of the best books I have ever read about the underwater world. Incredibly beautiful underwater photography of high quality. The photos do not only depict animals swimming around but, for example, sarcastic fringehead males in a showy territorial "fight," close up.
I also like the authors' sensible view about animals and diving in the ocean. No show-off accounts of near-shark-escapes but an honest experience, mostly good but sometimes scary, of working under water. The authors recount some extraordinary events, such as a ride on a manta after freeing him from entangling fishing nets, or unexpectedly finding themselves surrounded by a school of fish that is being slaughtered by marlins.
With this book we get a wonderful view into the ocean world but also a fascinating account of what it is like spending many hours a day waiting, scouting, decompressing, refilling tanks and back to waiting so one can capture a never seen one-minute event on film that made it worth all the work.
A poetic underwater journey!.......2000-08-30
Stare at the beautiful underwater photographs. Sitback, relax and gently discover the Ocean Realm with the still images of Howard Hall and his wife Michele, images that, as Peter Benchley (Jaws, The Deep) writes in the foreword, are among the finest in the world. Dive. Wander through the Kelp forests of the northern Pacific. Get a close-up of sharks and squids in magic detail. Enjoy the vivid colors of the reef and watch lobsters and sea turtles, dolphins and whales in an exciting photographic journey! Since this book is not a reference work, you will also enjoy reading it slowly and in the direction of your choice, diving at pleasure through the light text that describes the Hall's adventures as filmmakers and marine photographers. And then you will also find some information about the sea-life captured in the images and poetic hints about scuba-diving and underwater photography. A nice dive, a pleasant reading and, at the price that Amazon.com is offering it, a real gift. Buy the book!
A Must Read for Fin Fans!.......1999-12-04
For those of us who read everything we can on underwater photography, this book provides an added dimension and delightful reprieve from the technical how-to's of most underwater photography books. This book is a series of fascinating stories about the adventures and mis-adventures Howard and Michelle and their staff encountered when shooting different subjects. A fascinating and stimulating book, it provides anecdotal insight into how they approach certain projects without dwelling on the technical "how to's" found in most underwater photography books. Everyone studying underwater photography or just enjoying the sport of diving should surface long enough to give themselves this present. It sure made me want to grab my fins and camera and head off to points all around the world. Thanks to Howard and Michelle for putting together such a compelling read. And of course, it has beautiful photographs.
Book Description
From sharks, star-fish, and sea squirts to porpoises, penguins, and plankton, this charming compendium is swimming with exotic sea life. Over 600 specimens are presented in page after page of intricate engravings, woodcuts, and drawings from the Victorian era, the golden age of natural history. Meticulously rendered, these illustrations are paired with observations from early naturalists, describing the classification of each particular species, how its body is constructed, its behavior and preferences, and its habitat. Arranged by type and covering nearly all forms of marine life, The Anatomy of the Sea brings to light in one exquisite detail after another the mysteries of the deep. It's an inspiring book for all those who have gazed at the ocean in wonder.
Customer Reviews:
Exquisite illustrations/woodcuts, very informative.......2006-07-18
This is a beautiful text which is easy to read and reference. I've learned a lot from it. It's made for those who love books and the craftsmanship of publishing, not for those seeking colorful photographs.
Another misleading description.......2005-10-27
I purchased this book in the hopes of learning about some of the little known creatures of the deep. This seemed like a logical request given the title and description; however, I was truly let down. There is not a single bit of learning one can take from the text, the pictures are lacking (at best) and the author misses the point: Creatures of the Deep. Most of the creatures described are relatively shallow water creatures!
Don't waste your time.

Book Description
The deep sea is the world's largest and most puzzling habitat. It covers more than half the planet but less is know about the deep-sea environment than about the surface of Mars.
This photo essay, full of color illustrations and dazzling photographs, features the mysterious and alien deep-sea creatures that are uniquely suited for life on submarine canyon walls, in midwater and on the remote deep seafloor.

I thoroughly recommend this book - the quality of the photographs and the printing is exceptional. Sophie de Wilde was an extraordinary photographer, though it seems she isn't well known outside of France. I'd rank her with David Doubilet, such is the quality of her images and the depth of her artistry.

Book Description
..." Tasteless Cookies.......2006-11-17
Delorys Welch-Tyson's Ladyfingers is the sequel to her debut novel, Gingersnaps. The novel takes place mainly on the French Riviera. It was told in a bouncing manner from present day to things that occurred months, even years before. There are numerous characters throughout this book.
This book is about women, mainly blonde women that were poor and came into a lot of money. These women all had one thing in common, once they had received the money, they wanted to change everything about themselves even down to their names. They all contacted Arthuretta Bozell, the owner of Ladyfingers. Ladyfingers a prestigious life style makeover service. All the ladies had to read Madame Bozell's Guide to Elegant and Proper Behavior and Presentation, Town and Country Magazine and a thesaurus. I almost needed a dictionary and a translator to read this book, for it was written in French and English.
There was a web of lies, throughout this book. If it were not for these four stable characters, I do not believe that I could have kept up with this book. David Simon and his wife Desiree Brown Simon, both authors, Amelia Jackson, a singer, and her Belgian lover Jean Claude Fouret, would be who I consider to be the main characters. It was through these four characters that the story came together in the end.
I would recommend this book to a reader that likes to read things twice. The names fly back and forth so much that it is hard to follow. In the last twenty pages of the book is when it got quite interesting. The names that Welch-Tyson has chosen for her books are some dry cookies and this book was dry.

Lively and very entertaining.......2006-11-06
Reviewed by Cherie Fisher for Reader Views (10/06)
"Ladyfingers" is the second book in Delorys Welch-Tyson's "Cookie Trilogy". I have not read the first book but the story flows so well that I did not need to read "Gingersnaps" before I read this one, but I plan to now.
The story is about several people who have attended Ladyfingers, an etiquette school where the proprietor Miss Arthuretta Bozell teaches the newly rich elegance and manners. The clients also learn their lessons by religiously reading her guidebook "Madame Bozell's Guide to Elegant and Proper Behavior and Presentation". An example of what the guide offers: "Chapter Three: Entering a Room: Professionally or Socially. Upon entering a room, whether it is a social or professional situation, greet everyone (even if it is only one person) by saying good morning, good afternoon, or good evening: depending on the time of day. If people are already engaged in a conversation, say, `excuse me, if I may, I would like to speak to you,' to the person to whom you would like to address. Proper behavior requires that you acknowledge the humanity of other individuals. An exchange of greetings is essential to creating a gracious first impression in addition to increasing the probability of a congenial exchange between parties. A pleasant, natural smile helps, as well." One would think that these would be easy guidelines to follow. No so with this crew and so begin the hilarious antics by Madame Bozell's protégé's.
The two main characters in the book are Desiree Brown-Simon and her husband, David Simon, who have moved from Connecticut to the South of France. Desiree is a retired psychologist who has written a best seller on relationships and David is a famous best selling horror story author. They are definitely the most grounded characters in the story and have not attended Ladyfingers training. Of course, as the story unfolds we find out that Desiree has a few secrets of her own.
Many of the characters in the story try to disguise themselves as Baronesses, Countesses, Sheik's, and many more, from an unknown country. When in reality they are lottery winners, ex-cons, failed rap singers, and an exotic dancer. They fail miserably at their goal to be refined and wealthy and end up insulting most of the people they run into. With people like that running around the French Riviera, no wonder why Americans are not well liked.
The story concludes with all of these people coming together at David Simon's brother's wedding reception and the result is hilarious. This is a great book to read if you enjoy satire. I recommend it highly and look forward to reading "Gingersnaps" and Ms. Welch-Tyson's 3rd book "Almond Cookies".
Verry humorous, with an erotic touch!.......2006-05-23
The character Amelia Jackson, the international pop star brings to mind Diana Ross. I am not sure if that was the author's intention, but the idea certainly held me throughout the story.
The author created a new type of American expatriate story, taking place in an unexpected place, with an unexpected and riotous cast of characters. Sexy yet mis-matched couples, gallant opportunists, and eccentric artist types parade through this tale of American misadventures abroad. I thorougly enjoyed this novel.
The Gaffes of the Rich and Clueless.......2006-05-10
They're all blonde - the same shade - with the blousy, busty, "look at me now" demeanor of Anna Nicole Smith, though they introduce themselves as Vanderhovens of Delaware and Baroness von Denmarkes with an "e." Delorys Welch-Tyson lives on the French Riviera and she really is surrounded by people like this. You win a lottery. You buy a villa in the South of France. You reinvent yourself so that poor relations won't come with their hands out and new acquaintances won't remind you that you used to earn your livelihood as a pole dancer. (I can only imagine how that differs from ballet.) First, though, you get a personal makeover at the hands of Arthuretta Bozell, who turns out to be the most reinvented character of all.
Ladyfingers is a hilarious romp through a sunny place that would be paradise if not for all the shady people. (Those are Grahame Greene's words. ) Amongst the shady are a group of Puerto Rican rappers who almost get away with passing themselves off as the the Anti-Sanctions Society of East Somaria. (Where's that? What the hell, Riviera poseurs don't know geography.) And a would-be heiress who almost gets away with hijacking a famous singer's villa for a party.
Even Desiree Brown Simon and her husband David, the fun-loving but level-headed couple who expatriated to France in Welch-Tysons' first novel, Gingersnaps, are caught up in the whacky intrigue that comes with the lifestyles of the nouveau rich and clueless. Even Desiree turns out to have a past as coincidence upon coincidence unfolds. Who knew that the fine print that comes with the lottery jackpot says you have to spend the rest of your life as a character in a classic English farce?
Funny story, ridiculous people!.......2006-04-24
It is apparent that the author agrees with the theory shared by many of us non-Americans, which is that even an idiot can have money in America. The main characters in the story are simply some white trash women from the States who wander around aimlessly in France, insulting everyone, including their own contrymen. The only intelligent women in the tale are the two friends Amelia Jackson and Desiree Simon, both who are hard working women in exile in France, apparently trying to escape the very characters they meet up with on the French Riviera.
The wedding banquet at the Negresco was quite amusing. Personally, I feel that the story would have been more successful if it had less characters. I think that the transexual characters were superfluous. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable read.
