      Book Description

The study of the genetic basis for evolution has flourished in this century, as well as our understanding of the evolvability and programmability of biological systems. Genetic algorithms meanwhile grew out of the realization that a computer program could use the biologically-inspired processes of mutation, recombination, and selection to solve hard optimization problems. Genetic and evolutionary programming provide further approaches to a wide variety of computational problems. A synthesis of these experiences reveals fundamental insights into both the computational nature of biological evolution and processes of importance to computer science. Topics include biological models of nucleic acid information processing and genome evolution; molecules, cells, and metabolic circuits that compute logical relationships; the origin and evolution of the genetic code; and the interface with genetic algorithms and genetic and evolutionary programming.

                        Book Description

As an outcome of the European Science Foundation scientific programme, GEODE, on geodynamic and ore deposit evolution, this book examines the underlying geodynamic processes that lead to the formation of ore deposits in order to discover what controls the timing and location of major ore deposits in an evolving orogen. A collection of 19 research papers examines various aspects of ore genesis in the context of the geodynamic processes occurring with an evolving orogen. Although the majority of papers relate to Europe, their findings have a global significance for metallogenesis.

The book will be of interest to all those involved in research or mineral exploration concerned with metallogenesis. In addition, ore deposits provide new evidence about magnetism associated with transient, rapid changes in plate motions and subduction processes in unusual tectonic settings, and are therefore of interest to those involved in both the magmatic and tectonic processes of orogenesis.

                          Book Description

Lightning Physics and Lightning Protection presents a comprehensive and up-to-date review of lightning, including its hazards and protection techniques. The authors first discuss the effectiveness of conventional protective measures, supply technical advice and practical recommendations, and explore the prospects for the preventive control of a lightning leader, followed by a discussion of the initiation of a leader and return stroke and subsequent components. After including measurements useful for understanding lightning and its effects, the book describes the mechanism of lightning discharge processes. It then examines the effects of large aircraft, high-voltage lines, and other high-altitude constructions on lightning trajectory and leader attraction. The book concludes by studying the action of lightning's electrical and magnetic fields and the lightning current on industrial premises, power transmission lines, underground communications, aircraft and their electrical circuits, and the induction of a dangerous overvoltage. A clear, straightforward, and systematic presentation of complicated material, Lightning Physics and Lightning Protection provides deep insight into the physics of lightning, simple analytical estimates, and a detailed illustration of effects by computer simulation, making this resource essential for those who investigate lightning phenomena and who have to solve practical protection problems.

The title was taken from the famous book edited by R. Golde "Lightning": part 1 "Lightning physics", part 2 "Lightning protection". I expect this book will be also so important work in the field.

Listen Up, Dads! Your Teen Is Talking to You!

As exasperating as parenting can be during these volatile years, your teen is depending on you for steady faithfulness, love, and guidance. And because teens often find words elusive and expression difficult, they probably haven’t told you the things they wish you somehow automatically knew. So let Dad, If You Only Knew... be your guide. Josh Weidmann, just out of the teen years himself, joins his father, James, to help dads understand where their kids are coming from. It’s a messy world they live in, and meeting them in it is no simple task. But knowing these essentials now makes fatherhood eight times easier!

                              Welcome to Your Teen’s World

It doesn’t matter if you have the most picture-perfect, ideal-in-every-way teen or one who’s in full-swing rebellion. That teen you love is a “riddle wrapped in a mystery.” No father can know what his teen is really thinking.

That’s why youth communicator Josh Weidmann teamed with his father, Jim, to help you bridge the gap. In Dad, If You Only Knew…you’ll get an open, honest glimpse inside the teen mind. Josh’s extensive research, combined with pointed direction from a father’s heart, provide you with the practical guidance you need to establish a healthy, thriving father-teen relationship. It’s one you desire, your teen needs, and you both can’t afford to miss.

                              Story Behind the Book

“The resounding cry of teens for their fathers rings in my ear. I have been speaking to youth for five years and the greatest void I see in teens’ lives is the one left by their dad. I am only twenty-three years old myself, and to this day I can say that my dad is the most influential man in my life. Because of his impact, I have asked him share in this book. We have written this message in hopes of helping dads reengage in the vital father-teen relationship.” —Josh Weidmann

Well, I'm no dad, but I was once a teen, and I have a dad. And this is a message every father today needs to hear. Josh and Jim collaberate to offer us simple truths and guidance. Josh's work with youth all over the country, and his life of integrity, make him an insightful, powerful voice that's worth every father's listening ear (or, reading eye!).

                              4 out of 5 stars Good Info.......2006-03-11

Josh Weidmann and his dad did a very nice job reminding us what it's like to be young and have questions about our dreams and nightmares in relation to our fathers. The large info is that we, as fathers, frequently go through parenthood oblivious to the real thoughts and fears our kids have. This book is a plain fact educater of those issues with good ideas on how to be a friend instead of a foe to your teen. I recommend the book with a caveat not to stop there but be willing to spend the time while it's still available with your kid and invest in that special love account so they may make withdrawals when the time needs.

5 out of 5 stars Dynamic word for all Dads.......2005-08-11

If you're a dad, this book by Josh and Jim Weidmann is a MUST have for you. You will find the heart of your teen and the path to relationship with that teen. If you feel you are losing touch with the teen in your life (or if your just facing the teen years ahead), you NEED to read this book so you can meet your teen on first base and run the bases of life with them - not against them.

5 out of 5 stars Great book by a great guy.......2005-08-05

Josh and Jim Weidmann have written one of the most challenging and encouraging books for dads. It's one thing to read a book from a young guy telling you how to parent, it's another thing to read a book written by an amazing father-son combination. As a youth pastor I highly recommed this book to any dad that wants to have a better relationship with their teenagers Great job guys!

                              Book Description

Sorry, fellas, June Cleaver doesn’t live here anymore, and the days when a dad could claim to be clueless in the kitchen and get away with it are gone forever. Today, Dad is expected to be right there in the thick of it—preparing dinner, whipping up lunches, and making sure the family starts off the day with a healthy breakfast. But what’s a guy to do if he’s never filled a pot with water, let alone boiled any?

Wayne Harley Brachman, professional chef and father of two, knows from personal experience what you’re up against in the kitchen: limited time, limited knowledge, and a family of finicky eaters. In See Dad Cook, you’ll learn the ins and outs of real-world cooking, including recipes for easy, battlefield-tested family favorites like:

Breakfast Burritos, Blueberry Pancakes, Philly Cheese Steaks, Pizza Noodles, Shrimp on the Barbie, Pot Roast with Pan Gravy, Dad’s Kitchen Sink Sundae

See Dad Cook is your kitchen survival guide, full of foods your family actually wants to eat—including recipes for real kitchen basics like Tuna Salad and Meat Loaf. Brachman also offers advice on cooking with your kids, getting them to eat well, stocking a pantry, and the very few tools you’ll need to pull it off without a hitch.

Once you get started, you’ll find that cooking is easier and a lot more fun than you thought. Best of all, it gives you a chance to bring something you’re really proud of to the table—your family!

This is a terrific book... although I need to be more adventurous about trying new recipes, the ones I HAVE tried have been dandy.

I REALLY like that this book taught me how to hold a knife (heck, how to BUY a knife), how to cut an onion the right way... little things that make cooking much, much easier.

Cooking: it does a marriage good. Trust me on that one.

                              3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Non-threatening , Delicious but no Pictures.......2007-01-04

Sorry Wayne, I love you but....

Our 10 year old son gave this book to his dad this Christmas. My husband enjoys an ocassionaly foray into the kitchen but he's not much into reading. I think this book would be more interesting to him if there was less talk and more pictures. As it is, I'm the one who's enjoying and using this book.

I would have given this book 4 or even 5 stars were it not for one serious flaw - it doesn't have pictures! In a book written for men I think that's a big oversight. Many men are visual learners. If this book is meant for beginner or reluctant cooks then photos or detailed illustrations would be most helpful. Besides, men generally feast with their eyes. Photos of plated dishes can help them choose what they would be in the mood to cook. The scant monochrome line drawings scattered in the book just don't cut it.

Having said that I love the authour's "I'm your buddy" style of writing. He is one funny guy. His on-screen persona comes across in this book loud and clear.

As for the recipes, they are easy to follow and yield declicious but not extraordinary results. Looking at the ingredients, which BTW are all available in any supermarket, you know exactly what to expect and the results don't disappoint. This is a great book to refer to on those nights when you just don't feel like cooking. Effortless yet satisfying meals good enough for the whole family.

Rich Dad's Teach To Be Rich is about Robert Kiyosaki's decision to give up his manufacturing business and become a teacher...a teacher outside the walls of traditional education. More than a book on teaching, this book is about Robert's quest to find out how we learn and why so many people do not like school, even though they want to learn. Not only is this book a radical departure from traditional thinking on education, it is a radical departure from traditional ideas on money.

This book was awesome. I read it in one sitting. It was so insightful in identifying the components of a "True Man". It gave great specific instructions on how to be a man of God.

                                        Book Description

According to their friends, Tom and Pippa Drummond have the perfect existence -- an enviable lifestyle, a happy marriage, and a great kid in Tally.

A rare summer holiday is planned - an idyllic retreat in the Italian hills. Tom takes time off from running his restaurant, Pippa leaves her herb garden in the charge of a dotty neighbour and Tally takes a break from the two men in her life.

Tuscany is everything they hoped it would be - cicadas in the trees, the scent of sage and citrus and suppers under the stars. But their joy is short-lived. Overnight their lives, their circumstances, their very identities are altered, and life will never be the same again.

3 out of 5 stars I gave up on it.......2005-04-01

shortly after their tragic return from Italy. The set-up just didn't get me interested; it seemed, at times, too Harlequin-esque (UK: Mills & Boon). The new sous-chef seemed quite interesting, but I didn't care enough about Tom and Tally to carry on. I give these comments not to dissuade folks from reading the book, but to let others who find it rough going know they weren't the only ones.

5 out of 5 stars Hope Blossoms in the Garden of Despair.......2004-07-30

I bought this book because the author is so engaging on the television and his comments are often close to poetry. I did not expect to have the story sneak up on me so that when the crisis came, I burst into tears and had to put the book down for a while. More importantly, as Tom Drummond and his daughter, Tally, work through their grief and rebuild their lives, I was lifted out of my surrogate grief and could really enjoy how their lives became rebuilt. If you like ordinary people conquering extraordinary challenges by means of ordinary steadfastness and decency, you will enjoy Only Dad. It is enjoyable to be surprised with literary power from a book you only expected to provide a pleasant diversion. Some may think this book lacks drama and action, but the drama of the heart and the actions of love drive this masterful character study.

4 out of 5 stars Dealing With Loss.......2002-03-29

This is a delightful story about a father and daughter attempting to overcome their grief after the loss of a loved one. Tom Drummond and his daughter, Tally, seemed to have it all until their family holiday in Tuscany when they were touched by tragedy. From the heights of joy and contentment they were plunged, disbelieving into a world of shock and deep depression. They then have to help each other pull themselves out again and get their lives back to normal somehow.

Alan Titchmarsh presents a wonderful story that can almost be termed a fairy tale. It provides the reader an opportunity to almost completely escape into his world as the story unfolds around you. As you would expect from the presenter of Gardener's World and Ground Force, he adds a smattering of gardening references extolling the virtues of enjoying a nice garden. The main character, Tom, even erects a garden shed, a la Ground Force (although it takes him 3 days and not the requisite 2).

For pure entertainment and escapism value, this is a nice story that gives the reader a feeling of contentment upon finishing.
