A half black, half Vietnamese emergency room doctor, Carmen Nguyen, who knows better, gets involved in the affairs of a dying patient, Luke Redstone. Luke, who is suffering from leukemia and has only a short time to live, begs her to go check on his gamecocks that he keeps behind his cabin. When she rides her motorcycle to his house in the woods, she is shot at before she gets close enough to see how the cocks are faring.

Another patient, Walter Rios, who is recovering from a rough tumble over a rocky cliff, also becomes entangled in the gamecock affair. Even though Redstone's gamecocks are superior birds that win most of their matches, Rios and Carmen feel there is something else about the birds that make others wish to steal and even kill if necessary to obtain the cocks. Their path crosses that of a ruthless businessman, a cadre of killers, several scientists and a group of Navajos who have somehow become involved.

Much to the disgust of Nguyen's Vietnamese aunt who is not fond of American men, a romance begins to build between Rios, a guilt-ridden white water rafting guide and Nguyen. Nguyen is torn between pleasing her aunt and her love for Rios. There is plenty of background on Carmen's Vietnam beginnings and the reasons for Walter's guilt. The mystery plays out in the stunning scenery of the Grand Mesa and over the contaminated grounds of former uranium mines in western Colorado.

Robert Greer has written a fascinating mystery that includes science, medicine, murder and romance. It is a wonderful book that holds your attention to the last page.

Preposterous dialog and mangled cliches ("tree-lined aspens", "dot.com pharmaceutical start-ups") distract from an interesting plot.

Story-telling adventure.......2003-12-30

Half black, half Vietnamese emergency room doctor Carmen Nguyen thinks she's only offering a minor favor when she agrees to look out for a dying patient's gamecocks. But when someone takes shots at her when she visits the chickens, she knows there's something else going on. Something having to do with the chicken's incredible winning habits. Contrary to traditional science, these chicken appear to have been evolved into a superchicken race. And evil millionaire businessman Jack Kimbrough has decided to get his hands on the chickens any way he can and use them to breed a race of super-warriors.

With the help of white-water expert and ex-Marine Walter Rios, Nguyen decides to investigate. But the criminals have their own plans and it doesn't take them long to find out about Rios and Nguyen. Once they do, Kimbrough sends his pet assassin to make sure they don't cause any more trouble.

Nguyen and Rios try to stay ahead of the assassin and, using all of the contacts Rios had while in military intelligence, discover the truth behind Kimbrough's plot.

Author Robert Greer offers an exciting adventure story. Nguyen and Rios are both damaged characters trying to hold their lives together in the face of current danger and serious self-doubt caused by their histories. Greer's writing is sometimes clunky and his point-of-view shifts are disorienting. I found his use of coincidence to be overly heavy as well. But Greer's strong story-telling compensates for the technical problems. HEAT SHOCK will suck you in and keep you reading.

A Terrific Thriller.......2003-11-02

Doctor Carmen Nguyen is taking time off from genetic research and working in a Colorado emergency room. An ex-uranium miner who trains cockfighting birds comes to the ER with an unusual form of leukemia due to mining yellow-cake uranium when he was younger. She soon discovers that the miner's birds are stronger than they should be and that Denver biotech executive, Jack Kimbrough has taken an unusual interest in the fighting birds.

There is just the right blend of fascinating characters and intriguing plot in this action filled thriller to make this a book you won't soon forget.

Future shock: frightening genetic possibilities.......2003-10-30

Like any good science/mystery writer, Robert Greer trolls the latest in research to postulate a plausible, if scary, scenario for his recent submission to the future of science and mankind. But the reader must exercise patience, as Greer slowly builds to a climax in the final chapters, one that reveals the twisted plot of the ill-intentioned perpetrators.

Greer mixes an unlikely group of characters, from the eccentric to the dastardly, almost with one eye on the potential movie option. Carmen Nguyen is an emergency room physician in a Colorado facility, not the position of her choice, which is oncology and genetic research. However, while doing research in Utah, Carmen runs into a professional snafu: bureaucratic infighting and theft of resources that leaves her temporarily unemployed, disgusted and betrayed by coworkers. Nevertheless, Doctor Nguyen is enjoying her new job, now that she has distanced herself from her experience in Utah, although she knows that she is not working to capacity or in her chosen field. Then a man with disturbing symptoms is brought to her emergency room and his potential diagnosis challenges her research skills and reawakens her scientific curiosity.

An ex-uranium miner, also a professional bird trainer for local cockfights, is brought to his knees by an unusual, but identifiable, form of leukemia. Carmen bonds with the crusty old man, and he eventually cons her into checking up on his game birds. When Walter Rios, a solitary river rafter, has a freak accident while fishing, he takes a fall that puts his life in danger. Because of his accident, he meets the old miner in the hospital, where they share Carmen as their physician, both falling under her spell. Walter and Carmen, carrying out old Luke's directions together, stumble across some very strange evidence, bringing into question the invincibility of the gamecocks and the long-term effects of uranium on the humans.

Greer doesn't neglect the usual raft of bad guys, busy hatching nefarious schemes for self-aggrandizement and personal profit. Greer fleshes them out with all the despicable characteristics of the anti-hero. There is a cultural mix within the story that adds to the surrealism of the plot: Navajo soldiers who served together in Vietnam, multi-ethnic Carmen and her Vietnamese aunt and haunting memories of the massacre at Mei Lai. These people seem as disparate as unmatched squares of a patchwork quilt, but they form a complete pattern before the novel is finished.

Later it became obvious that molecular chaperones are also expressed constitutively in the cell and are involved in complex processes such as protein synthesis, intracellular protein transport, post-translational modification and secretion of proteins as well as receptor signalling. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) has demonstrated the feasibility of fusing the modified exit jet of a simple shock tube to simulate high dynamic pressure air blast flows such as those that occur in non-ideal nuclear blast events. These flows can be used to generate simulated non-ideal blast loads on Army equipment with the intent of evaluating and improving its survivability. This work has included the use of small, intermediate, and large scale shock tubes to which exit jet spreader devices were incorporated. These spreaders were mounted at the ends of the shock tubes but were not directly connected to them. Their purpose was to spread the exit jets and their associated dynamic pressure impulses more uniformly over a greater area, thus providing a more accurate simulation capability for testing larger targets. This report documents some of the latest efforts by ARL in evaluating the use of modified shock tube exit jets for simulating non-ideal blast flow. Previous studies at ARL included the mapping of unspread exit jets at three different shock tube scaled sizes and the evaluation of exit jet spreaders at the two smaller shock tube sizes to evaluate the effectiveness of the various spreaders and determine the degree of uniformity of the spreading. In the latest effort, a full scale exit jet spreader has been constructed for use with the ARL 1.68-m diameter shock tube, the largest of the three shock tubes.

A great collection of works by a great scientist.......2005-07-25

This is an excellent collection of works by one of the great and universal scientists of the 20th century. This should not be considered as a textbook; this is really a collection of review papers, both expositional for the lay audience, and rather advanced articles. This book provides a great introduction at provides an overview of the state of the field as of 1987. Some of the speculations have proven to be true, others forgotten, while many are still open. The book is interesting as an introductory overview of the subjects, as well as a historical perspective.
The cost was a little high, considering that it is a paperback.

This is heavy stuff, and it took me a while to get through, but it was definitely worth it! The author offers solid scientific information alongside his own personal insights and feelings into the science of the universe.

The Beauty of Ballyhoo.......2000-01-23

The Last Night of Ballyhoo is a powerful piece of drama. We see this powerful genius in its ability to draw laughter and tears from an audience in a single dizzy breath: who can forget Lala's burst of kleptomania, or Sunny's candle-lit Shabbat prayer in the final scene? I was blessed to take part in a community theater production of this play as Lala Levy; as a result of this opportunity, I and the cast came to know intimately the characters of Ballyhoo, and through them we lived the larger whole. From an actress' point of view I can tell you that the striking beauty, quick wit, and profound themes of this play can scarce be rivaled. However, whether one approaches this play as a reader, audience member, or actor, one will become more sensitized to the prejudices that ever haunt our race - the fear of "the other kind," be they separated from us by "the Elbe" or some less tangible distinction. Along with the characters of Ballyhoo we discover anew that there is no "us" and "them" - only "us."

VERY WONDERFUL PIECE OF THEATRE.......1999-11-18

I have read and had the oppurtunity to see this beautiful piece performed. Alfred Uhry knows how to write characters that come to life so you feel like you know them. This play is wonderful and keeps wanting to more about the people of it.

A second great work by an under-appreciated genius.......1999-07-07

Alfred Uhry strikes again with his second work examining racism and anti-semitism in the American South. In a clever twist, the playwright focuses on the prejudice of Jews of German decent against "the other kind" meaning Jews of Slavic decent. This infinitesimally subtle difference in ethnicity represents a world of difference in Southern Jewish society.

Exploiting the significance of such a minor distinction, Mr. Uhry expertly exhibits the lunacy of every type of racism.

You Won't Want to See the Last of Ballyhoo.......1998-05-26

Alfred Uhry's stunning play, "The Last Night of Ballyhoo" achieves two major accomplishments: it examines the timeless issue of biggotry (even within one's own minority group)and delivers it in a gift wrapped package which looks, feels and sounds like a good old fashioned Broadway play. Like "Driving Miss Daisy," Uhry examines the peculiarities in the lives of Southern Jews, drawing a great deal of humor from the "fish out of water" theme that seems to plague his lovable and ultimately loving family. Set against the darker backdrop of Americans in 1939 speculating what Hitler may or may not do in Europe, the characters in Ballyhoo dance with and around one another as they struggle for acceptance within their own community. Issues of racism are raised when the Jewish characters try to delineate the idea of "us" and "them" within the confines of Jewish society in Atlanta and other prominent Southern cities. Ultimately, Uhry shows us (as in "Miss Daisy") that there is no "us" v. "them," there is simply "us." That may sound overly simplistic, but Uhry's points stay with us long after the play is finished. That is the sign of a playwright who is a true craftsman. Would you like to see how a good play is constructed? Then pick up "The Last Night of Ballyhoo."

My sides hurt after reading this.......2007-06-12

I understand the point of this "sting" manuscript. However, all the serious stuff to the side, this is the funniest thing I've ever tried to read. I could only take it a few pages at a time, otherwise I started laughing so hard, I couldn't focus on the page.

Anyone who has ever thought about writing or publishign a book should pick up a copy of Atlanta Nights.

Atlanta Nights is a lot of fun. It was written by a team of writers specifically to expose a particular vanity press that parades itself as a legitimate publisher. A similar feat of pure wacky amusement was completed by a writing team in 1969 with Naked Came The Stranger which is still in print.

This book offers poignant insights on the human spirit, the nexus existing between men and women, and the nature of computer-generated Chapter 34s.
I have not laughed this hard since I signed my bankruptcy filing 2 days before the new law took affect!

While my copy is on the way, I have read enough excerpts to require extensive sedation. Yes, I'm a Believer friends, and I have hairs on my palms to prove it.

This is the book that those gutless, cyborg-like imbeciles Strunk and White would have written if they had possessed one iota of talent. In another life, boys. And your mother, too.

My eternal thanks to SF author and co-conspirator Victoria Strauss (The Burning Land etc.) - if that IS her real name - for pointing me at this meisterwerk par excellence. A day that will live in Infamy... (ellipsis = dot dot dot)

I would strongly suggest that asthmatics give this a miss, and that spouses of asthmatics who ignore this suggestion, should up their partner's Life insurance by a quantum factor. In fact, a lot.

This is a pretty good book if you're planning weekend trips to Atlanta. But if you live in the city, it's not that great.
