Book Description
Quantum mechanics provides the fundamental theoretical apparatus for describing the structure and properties of atoms and molecules in terms of the behaviour of their fundamental components, electrons and nuclei. For heavy atoms and molecules containing them, the electrons can move at speeds which represent a substantial fraction of the speed of light, and thus relativity must be taken into account. Relativistic quantum mechanics therefore provides the basic formalism for calculating the properties of heavy-atom systems.
This book provides a detailed description of the application of relativistic quantum mechanics to the many-body problem in the theoretical chemistry and physics of heavy and superheavy elements. Recent years have witnessed a continued and growing interest in relativistic quantum chemical methods and the associated computational algorithms which facilitate their application. This interest is fuelled by the need to develop robust yet efficient theoretical approaches, together with efficient algorithms, which can be applied to atoms in the lower part of the Periodic Table and, more particularly, molecules and molecular entities containing such atoms. Such relativistic theories and computational algorithms are an essential ingredient for the description of heavy element chemistry, becoming even more important in the case of superheavy elements. They are destined to become an indispensable tool in the quantum chemist's armoury. Indeed, since relativity influences the structure of heavy atoms in the Periodic Table, relativistic molecular structure methods may replace in many applications the non-relativistic techniques widely used in contemporary research.

Almost two decades after its original publication and more than fifteen years after its author retired from the New York Knicks to become a United States senator, this account of twenty days in a pro basketball season remains a classic in the literature of sports, unparalleled in its candor and intelligence. Bill Bradley is also the author of Time Present, Time Past, a memoir of his years in the U.S. Senate.
Book Description
Almost two decades after its original publication and more than fifteen years after its author retired from the New York Knicks to become a United States senator, Bill Bradley's account of twenty days in a pro basketball season remains a classic in the literature of sports, unparalleled in its candor and intelligence.
Bradley takes readers from the court to the locker room, from the seamless teamwork of a winning game to the loneliness of a motel in a strange city. We see Bradley and his fellow Knicks as they withstand the abuse of the press and the smothering adoration of their fans, along with the shameless appeals of those who want to parlay their celebrity into a fast buck. We watch in horror as Earl Monroe is beaten outside Madison Square Garden barely an hour after twenty thousand people cheered him. And we come to understand the euphoria and exhaustion, the icy concentration and intense pressure, that are felt only by those who play basketball for keeps.

A GOOD READ.......2007-03-17
FORMER NBA PLAYER BILL BRADLEY TAKES US THROUGH SOME OF THE 1973-74 KNICKS SEASON, AS SEEN THROUGH THE EYES OF BRADLEY, EARL MONROE, WILLIS REED AND DAVE DEBUSSCHURE. MOST OF IT IS INTERESTING AND WELL WRITTEN. IT IS NOT A TELL ALL OR CONTROVERSIAL BOOK BUT PRETTY MUCH A FACTS ONLY BOOK. SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE HOW THE PLAYERS SPEND THEIR DOWN TIME ON ROAD TRIPS, THE AVAILABILITY OF WOMEN WHO WILL SLEEP WITH JUST ABOUT ANY PLAYER, AND THE INNERPLAY OF THE KNICKS IN PRACTICE AND ON PLANES. I LIKED THIS BOOK BUT IT IS NOTHING GREAT AND IT IS BORING AT TIMES BUT STILL WORTH A PEEK.
Kind of dry.......2006-08-08
He writes about being in the NBA but it's during the 70's when it was so different from now. Players didn't make mega millions then. I can't believe they would still have to do their own laundry and share a hotel room with someone on the team. But it's a nice glimpse into the 70's and professional basketball, I guess. The basketball writing is okay, I've read much better. His writing is pretty dead.
The Real Deal.......2006-06-09
After reading John McPhee's account of Bill Bradley's years at Princeton, I put the book down and thought it was too good to be true. No NBA player I've ever seen is THAT smart. But after reading Bradley's own Life on the Run, I recant. Bradley IS that smart, and he's a hell of a writer to boot. This one can be spoken about with the same kind of respect due the classic sports profiles, including McPhee's own Levels of the Game. I'm glad I took a chance on this book. It was a real pleasure.
A Must-Read.......1999-07-20
Bill Bradley's account of three weeks in the life of an NBA team in the '70's is as much a stunningly insightful social commentary as it is a nice, easily-rambling, "On the Road"-style ride. Beautiful.
A Trenchant Examination of Life as a Professional Athlete.......1999-05-18
Bradley's memoir of the waning games in the New York Knicks' 1973-74 season (the season after they won their second NBA championship) contains many observations about professional sports that, unfortunately, continue to ring true today: the shameless exploitation of undereducated athletes by agents and comparable parasites; the intrinsic harshness of an itinerant existence during a roadtrip on the West Coast; the grueling physical and mental demands of the NBA regular season; the evanescent nature of fan support. Given all of the above, why then would anyone want to play NBA basketball? Well, Bradley also does a fine job of describing the many thrills an athlete can derive from, among other things, being exhalted by home fans; winning a championship; and being part of a selflless team unit that manages to sublimate individualistic tendancies in its pursuit of greater goals. Bradley's book, from what I can gather, was revolutionary for its time in that it eschewed the type of hagiographic approach that many writers took toward the world of professional sports and ablely demonstrated the myriad difficulties associated with being a player in the nation's largest media spotlight. It should be a must- read for all aspiring NBA players -- especially those players who are considering foregoing several (or all) years of their collegiate eligibilities to make a fast buck. They should be forewarned: "All that glitters isn't gold."

Book Description
It's the stuff NBA nightmares are made of. Michael Jordan retires after the most spectacular career in league history; Latrell Sprewell returns after one of the most violent incidents in the long history of player-coach relations; and a nasty lockout threatens to cancel the entire misbegotten season. The NBA had become a dysfunctional family, suddenly low on star power and scoring while high on self-serving players with little use for authority. And the perfect symbol for this new era of chaos was the New York Knicks.
In Just Ballin', Mike Wise and Frank Isola take you behind the scenes of an incredible run to the 1999 NBA Finals -- and into a diverse and often divided locker room. Well established as two of the nation's top NBA writers, Wise and Isola examine the Knicks' turbulent and nearly triumphant season. After barely making the playoffs, the Knicks somehow transformed themselves from underachieving malcontents into the least-loved underdog sports has ever seen. Revered in the Big Apple but reviled throughout the rest of America, this team became a powerful mix of hip-hop icons, aging veterans, and born-again believers. Just Ballin' unravels the curious contradictions: Is Sprewell a coach-choking monster or a misunderstood leader who came to rule Madison Square Garden? Is coach Jeff Van Gundy a fall-in soldier or a master manipulator who cunningly turned public opinion his way? Is franchise center Patrick Ewing an honorable warrior or an albatross who hurts the team with his on-court limitations?
In addition, Wise and Isola examine the key issues facing the league as it enters the new millennium: labor problems heightened by escalating salaries, the lack of a suitable ambassador following Jordan's departure, a rising influence of urban culture, and racial tension in a league dominated by black players and a white power structure. Not since David Halberstam's The Breaks of the Game has any book provided such an insightful, definitive account of life in and around the NBA's arenas.
Just Ballin' takes us to dramatic playoff games and wild practice sessions, on memorable rides aboard team buses and charter planes. From the locker room to the boardroom, from the preseason through the Finals, it tells the unforgettable story of a team that won over New York -- and the ongoing saga of a league still wondering about the shape of its future.

What can you say?.......2000-06-15
After reading this book, what can you really say except, WOW! I'm not a Knicks fan at all, but it's amazing how they took all their inner problems and used them to make the most improbable chase to the NBA title ever in '99. Of course I witnessed some of their heroics on national TV, whether it was Allan Houston's lucky bounce that ended Miami's season, or Larry Johnson's dramatic four-point play that killed Indiana's spirit in the conference finals, or Latrell Sprewell's incredible scoring run in Game 5 of the NBA Finals against the Spurs, it was all amazing. But even then, I knew that with Patrick Ewing's injury they wouldn't win the title, because of the Twin Towers problem in the Finals, and it proved too much as the Knicks ran out of gas.
Just Ballin' is Just Fun!.......2000-04-29
As a lifelong Knicks fan, I got caught up in the emotional roller coaster that was the 1999-2000 season. Since the beginning when I was heartbroken to see Starks and Oakley gone to the final game against the Spurs, I would pick up the paper to read on anything new about the Knicks. Just Ballin' fills in all the little holes and answers alot of the questions fans will have about the infamous Camby - Oakley trade, how Spree fit with the team, LJ's leadership role, etc. And although I knew about half of these stories, I felt that the authors did a good job showing the evolution of the time and the pressure they felt. This book is great for any Knicks fan or anyone just interested in learning how the modern NBA operates.
it`s the 411 on the modern day knicks.......2000-02-28
this book was very good read. some times i was late getting back from my lunch breaks, becase i could not put it down.if your interested in the inner workings of a basketball team read this book .it`s very informative and just a great book
The Inside Track.......2000-01-22
Just Ballin' is a good read which really gives you the inside track of an NBA Franchise owned by a billion dollar corporation. You also see how professional teams are effected internally by things such as bad attitudes, personal beliefs, or lack of commitment to the team. This book tells you in-depth about the 1999 New York Knicks and how the entire mess was somehow able to come together for an unforgettable playoff run. A good read for any basketball fan and a must read for Knicks fans.
Praise from An Old Bradley Fan.......2000-01-08
I read Bill Bradley's 'Life on the Run' about 20 years ago and had sworn off sports books since. This current group of Knicks did nothing to make me want to start reading again, but I got the book as a gift and after reading several pages became mesmerized by all the characters on the team. They're not my beloved Knicks from the Seventies, but this book really helped me to understand what the current NBA player is all about. It wasn't always flattering, and I liked that. I'd recommend this book for any old fogey like me who has trouble relating to the new guys.

Leatherbound Easton Press edition of the Masterpieces of American Literature series
Book Description
For more than a half century, the New York Knickerbockers have been one of the most recognizable and popular teams in professional sports. But the best stories about the Knicks have never been published before - they've only been shared by those "in the know" who work in and around the team. For the first time, these stories are captured straight from the mouths of those who know them best - former playes, coaches, towel boys, announcers, employees and administrators.

Great Read.......2004-01-02
this is a Must have Book for any Fan of the NBA.this Book talks about all of the Great Knicks&is truly Great to reflect on.those Great Knicks Days seems so long ago but they really weren't that long ago.Clyde the Glide,Earl The Pearl through the Present.
A must read.......2003-12-04
If you're a Knicks fan - or even just a basketball junkie - Garden Glory is for you. An easy read with great stories told by those who lived it. I could never have gone to the Old Garden, but the mental pictures the book creates is marvelous.
But the big unanswered question that I need to know is: What was Spree REALLY wearing when they came to his house in Milwaukee?
A must read...
Good take on the years of the Knicks.......2003-11-29
The Garden and the Knicks, a match made in heaven. This book delivers the best insight into the New York Knicks and its best players. From Clyde, to Willis, from Patrick to Houston, this book tells it all. Even has some great storys and pictures of the Old Garden a definent must read
Customer Reviews:
Fast-Paced but Anticlimatic.......2000-05-30
"Shoot out the lights" gave a great description of a truly fascinating team. This is the tale of a great Knicks team that roamed the Garden floor in the days before the NBA was a multibillion dollar enterprise.
The book works its way through the season, stopping to offer a few pages of biographical information on each player. The problem with this style is that it gets extremely repetitive and predictable. However, the information offered is excellent.
The other problem I had with the book is that not enough time is spent on the great Finals series between the Lakers and the Knicks.
The NBA does a better job than any other league of forgetting its past. The truth is, there were great players and interesting teams long before MJ came on the scene. This book will give the fans some insight into a few of those players and teams.
Customer Reviews:
The ideal book for the ultimate Knicks fan!.......1999-03-26
Wow! This 250-page account of the Knick's 50 year history is spectacular. Recapping everything from Ned Irish's idea of a professional NY basketball team to the Knicks' signing of Allan Houston, this books is not only great to look at(thanks to George Kalinsky's pix) it is also insightful and nostalgic to read(this thanks to Phil Berger's text). If you love the Knicks, this book is a must-have! If you like the Bulls?...Maybe not. Knick fans: Also, check out a rare photo of Clyde Frazier in a Cavs uniform(!) on pg 149.
