The Safety Standard. Period........2004-07-03
If you are a chemistry student (I was a freshman when I encountered this book) then you need to read this book before you start working with your reagents.
If you are employed in a field where you work in a laboratory or come into contact with laboratory materials (albeit - it is aimed at chemical labs and not specifically at bioscience labs) then you need to read about the materials you could be exposed to, BEFORE you are exposed.
If you are a medical professional - then you already have one.
If you are a legal professional and you deal with toxic torts: you need one.
Concise, clear and accessible by any high school grad. If you work with chemicals - you need this book.

Safe Work Practices for the Environmental Laboratory
Frank R. Spellman Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Loose Leaf ASIN: 1566765749 |
Book Description
Make your environmental lab--and lab technicians' work practices--the safest possible. *Protect workers from hazardous material they handle on-site *Protect the civilian population from harm in a hazardous materials emergency *Prevent accidents before they happen The purpose of Safe Work Practices for the Environmental Laboratory is twofold: 1.For the person designated as the laboratory's Chemical Hygiene Officer or Safety Officer, this text is a user friendly reference that will provide a format, a template, a guide to compliance with OSHA's Laboratory Standard (29 CFR 1910.145); and 2.for the person who is assigned to work in the environmental laboratory, this user-friendly text provides the information needed not only to perform routine laboratory tasks correctly, but also to perform them safely. The environmental lab is involved with performing analytical testing and sampling protocols relating to air, soil, biosolids, sludges, drinking water, wastewater, groundwater, stormwater, waste characterization, petroleum products, and HRSD/NPDES effluent studies. Many wastewater treatment plants and water works have their own environmental laboratories. These labs primarily perform analysis of process conditions to ensure optimization of the process. However, even these small labs (a few are quite large) perform "environmental sampling" and therefore are environmental labs. The actual genesis of the environmental laboratory can be attributed to the environmental regulations that have been generated by USEPA, AOAC, ASTM, NIOSH, OSHA, and other regulatory and advisory entities. The typical environmental laboratory contains several different types of hazards the lab worker must guard against. This is the case even though modern environmental laboratories have been designed to take maximum advantage of engineering controls that work to "engineer-out" most hazards. The main hazard discussed in this text has to do with hazardous materials--dangerous chemicals and compounds--and the effect they can have on work practices. OSHA is quite specific in regard to protecting the laboratory worker from harm that could result from handling hazardous materials--these specifics are discussed in detail throughout this text. It is important to point out that this text will provide the user with more than just a "safety book." For example, this text provides the user with a sample Chemical Hygiene Plan, it discusses various safe work practices for standard operating procedures normally performed in the environmental laboratory, and it discusses procedures to use for emergency response activities, such as clean-up of chemical spills. The bottom line is that probably the most important benefit to be derived from using this text is the exposure the user receives to the lessons and examples presented throughout the text; these lessons learned and examples provide information on how to make your environmental laboratory and the performance of your individual work practices safer. When you get right down to it, isn't this what a safety text should be all about?

Alison's Automotive Repair Manual: A Novel
Brad Barkley Manufacturer: St. Martin's Griffin ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0312325797 |
Amazon.com
Alison lives in a small West Virginia town with her sister and brother-in-law. As Alison's Automotive Repair Manual opens, her main occupation is mourning her husband, who died in an accident two years ago. Her sister, her friends, and her former boss at the community college have all grown weary of her grief, and beg her to move on. But Alison is paralyzed, maybe partially because she wasn't all that crazy about her husband in the first place. One day she discovers a disintegrating 1976 Corvette in her sister's garage and finally thinks of something she'd like to do: repair the Vette. Alison knows nothing about cars, but pegs away at her project anyhow, knowing all the while that "the whole thing was folly." Meanwhile, we follow her healing, her new love for a munitions expert named Max, her sister's quest to get pregnant, and the (literal) exposure of the town's secret history. While Alison is an appealingly complex character, forever stumbling into gaffes, the book is a little too neat, with its themes, goals, and love interests laid out tidily in the first 40 pages. But fans of quirky Southerners such as Jill McCorkle will find a sympathetic new voice here. --Claire DedererBook Description
A young widow, Alison has been in mourning for two years. She lives in West Virginia with her older sister and brother-in-law, who urge her to get on with her life and move back home. Alison promises to leave-just as soon as she renovates a nearly-ruined 1976 Corvette rusting in their garage. Problem is, she doesn't know the first thing about cars, and the townspeople are reluc-tant to have a woman messing with automotive parts.Customer Reviews:
Has some very good moments.......2003-12-05
THe novel is cleverly written. Each chapter heading is a section of an automotive repair manual, that gives you a brief description of what Alison is going to learn in the ensuing chapter.
What I liked best about this novel was the complexity of the characters that we meet. There are no wasted characters. Everyone we meet is well texted, they are complete, and they have strengths and weaknesses, and some are not all that likeable. Most of the dialogue is good- to the point, few embelishments, and very realistic. You capture a nice picture of small town America. I was not always happy with the interior narrative of Alison however. Sometimes I felt the narrator was a little too detached, and I guess this supposed to be part of Alison's character, but it separated me a little too much from Alison, and sometimes I really didn't like her character. This is always a big literary sticking point with me- how is the reader supposed to feel about the hero? Are we supposed to like them, or is that too pat?
I also didn't see the pattern of Alison's growth very clearly. I don't like things spelled out, but I think the reader needed to make too many leaps and guesses as to how Alison's character developed throughout the novel. I guess I was not convinced of any real transformation.
But, that aside, I think this is a novel that deserves to be read, and discussed, and reread.
You MUST read this one!.......2003-09-11
Alison finally told Sarah that she would get on with her life - just as soon as she renovated the nearly ruined 1976 Corvette that was rusting in Sarah's garage. Alison knew absolutely NOTHING about cars. But she bought a manual and tools, rolled up her sleeves, and went to slow work.
Max Kesler was a handsome munitions expert. His father was a compulsive liar whose biggest lie (that was around fifty-years old) may soon become exposed. That lie made Mr. Kesler the town's celebrity! But Max was tired of all the lies and actually looked forward to the town learning the truth in the very near future.
***** Brad Barkley has earned a place on my list of favorite authors! Nicholas Sparks has heavy competition here! I could not stop reading. I cannot recommend this novel high enough. A MUST READ! *****

Set in a small West Virginia town, the novel brings you exactly the kinds of Southern characters you'd hope for: quirky, endearing, and full of the kinds of eccentricities that make you want to plunk yourself down in the middle of the story to talk to them for a while.
Buy it. Read it. You won't be sorry.
