    Book Description

Mathematical modeling of human physiopathology is a tremendously ambitious task. It encompasses the modeling of most diverse compartments such as the cardiovascular, respiratory, skeletal and nervous systems, as well as the mechanical and biochemical interaction between blood flow and arterial walls, or electrocardiac processes and the electric conduction into biological tissues. Mathematical models can be set up to simulate both vasculogenesis (the aggregation and organisation of endothelial cells dispersed in a given environment) and angiogenesis (the formation of new vessels sprouting from an existing vessel) that are relevant to the formation of vascular networks, and in particular to the description of tumor growth. The integration of models aimed at simulating the cooperation and interrelation of different systems is an even more difficult task. It calls for the set up of, for instance, interaction models for the integrated cardio-vascular system and the interplay between central circulation and peripheral compartments, models for the mid-long range cardiovascular adjustments to pathological conditions (e.g. to account for surgical interventions, congenital malformations, or tumor growth), models for the integration among circulation, tissue perfusion, biochemical and thermal regulation, models for parameter identification and sensitivity analysis to parameter changes or data uncertainty – and many others. The heart is a complex system in itself, where electrical phenomena are functionally related with the wall deformation. In its turn, electrical activity is related with heart physiology. It involves nonlinear reaction-diffusion processes and provides the activation stimulus to the heart dynamics and eventually the blood ventricular flow that drives the haemodynamics of the whole circulatory system. In fact, the influence is reciprocal, since the circulatory system in turns affects the heart dynamics and may induce an overload depending upon the individual physiopathologies ( for instance the presence of a stenotic artery or a vascular prosthesis).Virtually, all the fields of mathematics have a role to play in this context. Geometry and approximation theory provide the tools for handling clinical data acquired by tomography or magnetic resonance, identifying meaningful geometrical patterns and producing three-dimensional geometrical models stemming from the original patients data. Mathematical analysis, flow and solid dynamics, stochastic analysis are used to set up the differential models and predict uncertainty. Numerical analysis and high performance computing are needed to numerically solve the complex differential models. Finally, methods from stochastic and statistical analysis are exploited for the modeling and interpretation of space-time patterns. Indeed, the complexity of the problems at hand often stimulates the use of innovative mathematical techniques that are able, for instance, to accurately catch those processes that occur at multiple scales in time and space (like cellular and systemic effects), and that are governed by heterogeneous physical laws.

        Book Description

Earth Days details the events of the revolution in ecology initiated by the publication of Silent Spring from the perspective of someone involved in its events. It is a book having to do with ideas and the people who held them.

Earth Days starts with Rachel Carson and the other writers and scientists whose words caught the attention of the public on Earth Day. It tells about the Odum brothers from the corn pone South, champions of the ecosystem idea, Robert MacArthur, the "James Dean" of ecology, and Jared Diamond, who tried to be his successor and in the effort set off a war in ecology. It tells about Dan Simberloff, who rebelled against the science inspired by his own mentors in that war. It tells about Paul Ehrlich and David Pimentel, for whom no environmental issue was beyond their expertise. It also tells about Gene Likens, who looked and acted more like an insurance salesman, yet found a way through the swirling controversies in his science to put it to good practical use. There are, of course, many others, each trying to find their own personal way in the broad, important science that is ecology.

Earth Days details that revolution from the perspective of someone involved in its events. It also gives the reader the necessary background to follow the most technical material. Difficult material becomes easy, lively reading.

--Howard V. Cornell (University of Delaware): "Fantastic! It kept me up all night. I couldn't put it down."

--Nicholas Gotelli (University of Vermont): "It is very lively and fun to read."

--Daniel Simberloff (University of Tennessee): "...an excellent and engaging writer...appears to be a really major and interesting book."

--David Pimentel (Cornell University): "...fantastic job of writing to capture the views of numerous ecologists!"

--Gene Likens (New York Botanical Garden): "I learned some things about myself."

          Book Description

This invaluable book is an extensive set of lecture notes on various aspects of non-perturbative quantum chromodynamics — the fundamental theory of strong interaction on which nuclear and hadronic physics is based.

The original edition of the book, written in the mid-1980's, had more of a review style. In the second edition the outline remains the same, but the text has been completely rewritten, and extended. Apart from the new developments over the years, this edition has benefited from several graduate courses which the author has taught at Stony Brook during the last decade. The text is now complemented by exercises and has a total of about 1000 references to major works, arranged by subject.

Three major issues — the structure of the QCD vacuum, the structure of hadrons, and the physics of hot/dense matter — are addressed as physics problems. Therefore, when discussing any specific subject, the book attempts to incorporate (1) all the solid theoretical results, (2) experimental information, and (3) results of numerical (lattice) simulations, which are playing an increasing role in quantum field theory in general, and the development of QCD in particular.

The QCD Vacuum, Hadrons and Superdense Matter takes the reader from the first encounter with the subject to the front line of research, as quickly as possible.

          Book Description

This volume describes the Pomeron, an object of crucial importance in very high energy particle physics. The first chapter looks at historical roots, setting the scene for subsequent chapters, which focus on the derivation and study of the Pomeron that emerge within perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). A simple toy model is first used to illustrate the basic ideas behind the construction of the Pomeron and leads naturally to the more realistic case of QCD. The reggeized gluon is introduced and used to build the Pomeron of perturbative QCD. The dynamical nature of the Pomeron is then investigated. The role of the Pomeron in small-x deep inelastic scattering and in diffractive scattering is examined in detail. The volume concludes with a discussion of the color dipole approach to high energy scattering and the explicit role of unitarity corrections.

As an introduction to the BFKL equation and low x resummation in popular literature, this book is probably unsurpassed. I would recommend it to all students of QCD in the high energy limit.

          Book Description

This work explores the application of harmonic oscillator states in problems of atomic, molecular, nuclear and elementary particle physics. The early chapters offer a comprehensive discussion of problems involving from one to four particles and the n-particle problem in the Hartree-Fock approximation, with extensive use of the transformation brackets for harmonic oscillator coefficients and related concepts. The application of harmonic oscillator states to scattering problems is also discussed, as is the group theory underlying the harmonic oscillator and its application to the Coulomb problem, collective motions in nuclei, and relativistic many body problems with oscillator interactions. Written by two internationally-recognized experts in the field, this book will serve as an essential resource for the serious graduate student as well as the professional physicist or mathematician.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Many diverse applications.......2004-06-07

The harmonic oscillator is one of the classic problems that recurs in physics. Partly because the underlying differential equation is one of the simplest non-trivial equations possible. But, and related to this, because it is a problem that can be solved exactly.

What the authors have done is gather under one cover a panoply of harmonic oscillator applications in modern physics. Something that is otherwise scattered through various monographs and journal papers. This in itself has merit to those of you who might have wondered how extensively the idea is applied in various branches of physics.

              Book Description

This is a very useful reference book for working astronomers and astrophysicists. Forming the proceedings of a recent IAU meeting where the availability and the needs of atomic and molecular data were discussed, the papers published here discuss existing and planned instruments for astronomical spectroscopy from earth-orbiting satellites. In particular, the atomic and molecular parameters that are, or will be, needed for analysis of the data obtained by these instruments are considered. A number of significant shortcomings in the available databases are identified. The needs highlighted will be of interest to laboratory astrophysicists, both experimentalists and theorists, who can produce the data required. A second group of papers provides a current inventory of atomic and molecular data compilations.

                    Book Description

The behaviour of many complex materials extends over time- and lengthscales well beyond those that can normally be described using standard molecular dynamics or Monte Carlo simulation techniques. As progress is coming more through refined simulation methods than from increased computer power, this volume is intended as both an introduction and a review of all relevant modern methods that will shape molecular simulation in the forthcoming decade. Written as a set of tutorial reviews, the book will be of use to specialists and nonspecialists alike.

                      Book Description

Chiral dynamics provides a rigorous and model-independent methodology for making QCD predictions at the confinement scale. This helps particularly in the testing of the standard model. The workshop reported here was focused on theoretical predictions and the measurements of physical processes, analyzing carefully the phenomenology needed to bridge the gap between the two. Besides the lectures, this volume also contains summaries of the working groups on ¦-¦-scattering, ¦N-interaction, photo/electro-pion-production, and on chiral anomaly. This book is a thorough review of the state of the art and it addresses researchers as well as graduate students.

                        Book Description

In this book, a number of the world's leading researchers in quantum, classical and atomic physics cooperate to present an up-to-date account of the recent progress in the field. The first part highlights the latest advances in semiclassical theory, whilst the second one is devoted to applications to atomic systems. The authors present the material in pedagogical form to make it easy reading for non-specialists, too. Among the topics treated, the reader will find a new quasiclassical quantization scheme for Hamiltonian dynamics, an application of the semiclassical formalism to photodissociation of small molecules and to the Lorentz gas and discussions of tunneling corrections. Furthermore, one finds papers on chaotic ionization, on the behaviour of hydrogen atoms in external fields, e.g. magnetic or microwave fields.

In the enchanted city of Turai, the royal family is corrupt, the politicians can be bought, and the civic guards have better things to do than guarding. Thraxas may look unprepossessing, being overweight and not quite overbrained, and more interested in pursuit of his next glass of beer than pursuit of justice, but if you're in trouble in Turai this portly private eye is probably your only hope. Turai is no stranger to death in all its forms-except that now a silent and insidious variety of death has entered the city, and no one knows who will die next. What they do know is that everywhere Thraxas goes in his search to recover a missing magical jewel, the mysterious death has been there first, leaving the dead or dying as its calling card. Thraxas hasn't a clue, but he does have a pressing shortage of funds, and if stopping the unseen, unknown silent killer is what it takes to recover the jewel and replenish his wallet, he'll take the job. But will he solve the mystery, or join the dance himself. . . ?

Very amusing, dodgy academics, chain mail bikini wearing scholar genius, pot head head sorceresses, evil orc wizards, multiplying sorcerous items and a publican with relationship issues.

Oh, and a pie shortage. A terrible, horrible, calamitous event. Who cares if the city crumbles, politicians die, unicorns ravish maidens, or whatever, if you can't get a decent meat pie?

In other words, very fun. Thraxas will do what is needed and right, to ensure his food supply.

                        4 out of 5 stars A fantasy P.I. in a fantasy Rome.......2007-06-19

An amusing novel in a series of books about a private investigator in a fantasy version of ancient Rome called "Turai".

A little like Glen Cook's "Garrett P.I." series, but this reminded me even more strongly of Lindsey Davis's "Falco" novels about an informer in the real Rome.

This is the fourth and most recent to date in a series comprising

                        Thraxas
                        Death and Thraxas
                        Thraxas & the Sorceres
Thraxas & the Dance of Death.

Like Marcus Didius Falco, the hero of this book, Thraxas, is an investigator with a lot of enemies. Like Falco, he has a lovely associate, though instead of a razor-sharp senator's daughter, Makri is a part human, part Elf and part Orc, lethal with a sword, and sometimes wears a chainmail bikini described as "one of the smallest garments ever seen in the civilised world."

Like Garett but unlike Falco, Thraxas lives in a city where sorcery and magic add their dangers to the usual crop of merely human villains.

In this fourth book in the series, Thraxas is hired to recover an extremely important magical jewel which has gone missing. But every time he gets close to the missing item, he finds a collection of dying or recently killed victims instead. Soon everyone from senators to the press is blaming him for a mysterious wave of murders, and the public are making bets with bookmakers on how many people will get killed before Thraxas's latest case has been resolved.

Meanwhile Makri is falsely accused of theft and Thraxas is falsely accused of cowardice. With his licence to investigate suspended, Thraxas is in big trouble - but not nearly as much trouble as the city of Turai will be in if he doesn't find the stolen jewel before certain other people do ...

Entertaining if a little silly. If you have read and enjoyed either the Garett P.I. or Marcus Didius Falco series, and don't object to a little escapist fantasy, you will probably enjoy the Thraxas books.

If you enjoyed this or other books about Thraxas, have not previously heard of Falco, and would like to read an even better series about a similar character in the real world, then I recommend youtake a look at the Falco novels, the first of which is, "The Silver Pigs" by Lindsey Davis.

Sorting out other people's problems may pay the bar bill, but his sometime assistant Makri, is getting in trouble for being a swot, his landlord is getting between him and a good dinner, and the Next Great Orc War still hasn't started....

Thraxas isn't back at the Avenging Axe, he's working an unpleasant case, is the subject of an interesting bet, and isn't enjoying it at all...again

                        Book Description

The city is Turai, where sorcerers and assassins-sometimes, it's hard to tell them apart-ply their wares, the rulers are corrupt, the politicians are worse, and the civic guards might try to solve a crime, except that they've really got better things to do. Overweight and somewhat uncouth, Thraxas may not look like a man of action, (and he'd rather pass on the action, thank you, and order another beer), but if you're in trouble in Turai this portly private eye is probably your only hope. Not that Thraxas himself has much hope in the first of the two complete novels in this volume-A judge has fined him almost every guran he has, two old enemies have threatened his life, and his old commander in the army, after promising a solution to Thraxas' problems, has just turned up dead. Naturally, Thraxas is the prime suspect . . . . In his second case, Thraxas has received a message from an old friend in trouble in the Elvish Isles, and since the elves have no experience in investigating, Thraxas is hired to do the legwork. Naturally, as soon as he arrives in the Isles, things start getting weird. But when the going gets weird, Thraxas gets going. . . .

This book is about a sort of private investigator, Thraxas, who has the typical bumbling traits of a comic detective, including a rude manner (more offensive than hard-bitten) and an obsession with beer and gambling. Together with his sometime sidekick Makri, an escaped gladiator from the Orc Pits who is the first female student to attend the Guild College who works as a chainmail bikini-wearing waitress at the local tavern the Avenging Axe and just so happens to be the best warrior in the entire city of Turai, they run around offending people and solving crimes.

This is basically just fun comic fantasy, not epic or life-changing, but wonderful for anyone who likes the Hawk and Fisher series or Terry Pratchett's novels. I highly reccommend it.
