                  Description:
A fast and highly sensitive assay for pepsinogen I (PG I) and pepsinogen II (PG II) by using time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay (TRFIA) detection technique has been developed for the determination of serum PG I and PG II against gastrointestinal diseases. On the noncompetitive assay, one monoclonal antibody (McAb) coated on wells was directed against a specific antigenic site on the PG I or PG II. The McAb, called as labelling McAb, was prepared with the europium-chelate of N-(p-isothiocyanatobenzyl)-diethylenetriamine-N,N,N,N-tetraacetic acid and directed against a different antigenic site on the PG I or PG II molecule. After bound/free separation by washing, the fluorescence counts of bound Eu^3^+-McAb were measured. The levels of PG in sera from patients or healthy volunteers were determined by PG I and PG II TRFIA using the autoDELFIA"1"2"3"5 system. The measurement ranges of PG I-TRFIA were 3.5-328.0@mgL^-^1 and those of PG II-TRFIA were 2.0-55.0@mgL^-^1. The within-run and between-run CVs of the PG I-TRFIA were 1.9% and 4.7%, respectively, and those of PG II-TRFIA were 2.1% and 3.8%, respectively. The recovery rates of PG I-TRFIA and PG II-TRFIA were 102.7% and 104.6%, respectively. The detection limitations of PG I and PG II were 0.05@mgL^-^1 and 0.02@mgL^-^1, respectively. The dilution experiments showed the percentage of expected value of PG I-TRFIA was 93.2-102.3% and of PG II-TRFIA was 97.3-110.6%. The cross-reacting rate between PG I and PG II was negligible. The linear correlation of radioimmunoassay (RIA) and TRFIA measurements resulted in a correlation coefficient as 0.926 of PG I and as 0.959 of PG II. The europium-labelling McAbs were stable for at least one year at -20^oC, and the results of the TRFIA with same reagents were reproducible over one year as well. The means of 1600 healthy volunteers were 162.4+/-52.1@mgL^-^1 for serum PG I, 11.7+/-6.8@mgL^-^1 for serum PG II, and 13.8+/-7.4 for the PG I/PG II ratio. The normal ranges of Serum PG I levels for healthy volunteers were 58.2-266.6@mgL^-^1, and those of serum PG II levels were less than 25.3@mgL^-^1. The availability of a highly sensitive, reliable, and convenient PG-TRFIA method for quantifying PG will allow investigations into the possible diagnostic value of this analysis in various clinical conditions, including gastric carcinoma, duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer and gastritis. The sensitivity and reproducibility of the assay were satisfactory for clinical applications.

                          Description:
The patent information field is in a state of flux, caused by new tools and changing habits and philosophies. In this article a number of major issues arising from this situation are discussed, some ways in which the EPO is responding are described, and some ideas on future developments provided. Patents are increasingly rated as valuable assets, but is patent information, and especially bibliographic patent information, being treated with the same meticulousness as in the past? More people are searching than ever before. But are they squeezing out the information professional? What effect will the IPC reform, the arrival of XML and other developments have? By focussing on completeness, timeliness and correctness, can patent offices make a contribution to alleviate the situation? The author concludes that, more than ever before, it is important that expert patent information professionals ensure that their views and needs are communicated to both initial data suppliers, mainly patent offices, and to commercial database suppliers and hosts.

                                  Book Description

This book examines various mathematical tools—based on generalized collocation methods—to solve nonlinear problems related to partial differential and integro-differential equations. Covered are specific problems and models related to vehicular traffic flow, population dynamics, wave phenomena, heat convection and diffusion, transport phenomena, and pollution.

Based on a unified approach combining modeling, mathematical methods, and scientific computation, each chapter begins with several examples and problems solved by computational methods; full details of the solution techniques used are given. The last section of each chapter provides problems and exercises giving readers the opportunity to practice using the mathematical tools already presented. Rounding out the work is an appendix consisting of scientific programs in which readers may find practical guidelines for the efficient application of the collocation methods used in the book. Although the authors make use of Mathematica ®, readers may use other packages such as MATLAB ® or Maple TM depending on their specific needs and software preferences.

Generalized Collocation Methods is written for an interdisciplinary audience of graduate students, engineers, scientists, and applied mathematicians with an interest in modeling real-world systems by differential or operator equations. The work may be used as a supplementary textbook in graduate courses on modeling and nonlinear differential equations, or as a self-study handbook for researchers and practitioners wishing to expand their knowledge of practical solution techniques for nonlinear problems.

                                    Book Description

Interfaces are geometrical objects modelling free or moving boundaries and arise in a wide range of phase change problems in physical and biological sciences, particularly in material technology and in dynamics of patterns. Especially in the end of last century, the study of evolving interfaces in a number of applied fields becomes increasingly important, so that the possibility of describing their dynamics through suitable mathematical models became one of the most challenging and interdisciplinary problems in applied mathematics. The 2000 Madeira school reported on mathematical advances in some theoretical, modelling and numerical issues concerned with dynamics of interfaces and free boundaries. Specifically, the five courses dealt with an assessment of recent results on the optimal transportation problem, the numerical approximation of moving fronts evolving by mean curvature, the dynamics of patterns and interfaces in some reaction-diffusion systems with chemical-biological applications, evolutionary free boundary problems of parabolic type or for Navier-Stokes equations, and a variational approach to evolution problems for the Ginzburg-Landau functional.

                                      Book Description

Meet the unlikely Dev Degraw, son of the iconoclastic governor of Alabama and former child actor on the historically bad television drama Bayou Dog. In Tuscaloosa--home of the University of Alabama, ferocious wiener dogs, butter-eating contests, jackleg lawyers, and one-eyed stalkers--Dev moves among the denizens of local watering holes, the political bigwigs of the state capital, and the sundry elements of B-movie Hollywood.

As Wonderdog unfolds, he is trying his best to stay away from his father's heated bid for reelection and out of a costar's plans to organize a Bayou Dog cast reunion. But his efforts to rectify past glories with more recent foibles are foiled, and Dev is unwittingly thrust upon a career path that will at last begin to define him. The result is a tour de force of American revelry and a wholly original look at the comic vagaries of the human condition.

As everyone seems to agree, one only need read about twenty pages into the book to realize that Inman Majors has an excellent grasp on the English language. On top of that, he has a very clever wit, as does his protagonist here, Dev Degraw. The entire book is filled with his cynical, circumlocutory humor--it literally never stops.
The end result is a 'loser lit' tale that reads like an extremely long series of consecutive, self-deprecating wisecracks on Degraw's situation. The book does indeed contain many hilarious moments, but alas, they are nothing more than momentary. The witty, eloquent cynicism first comes as a fun, promising read, but eventually forces you to strain your eyes as you try to see the story beneath the language. This gets old very quickly.
The story underneath--and, in my opinion, the book in general--could have been much better. Had the quality of the plot equalled the quality of the writing, this book would have easily recieved five stars, but as it fails in the latter department, I must rate it a 3/5.

At last, the American writer who appreciates Ralph Malph as the American writer should of the humor!

This is story of governor-elect (in the matter of insanity) Dev Degraw and four dogs, the wiener dogs of torment meeting the eerie parallel of the (late, great) Thor (now fetching Pa in heaven!) and his not-pale imitative descendent, Comet, who may be the title dog.

I quote "may be" title dog, for is Dev Degraw not the symbolic title dog of himself? Why the D here, and why the D there? Perhaps Dev's name should be Dog Dog to make Biminim's d-light complete?

For Dev is a dog as surely as man is a dog and as surely as Inman Majors is genius!

Must not man be dog to run for the Head of the Heart of Dixie? Can you not see George Wallace as wiener dog #1 and Fob James as wiener dog #2?

All hail again Inman Majors (I.M. yall), and may you not fill your threesome with Bunny Akins and Odelle Bailey!

I decided to read Wonderdog because Inman Majors was featured at my local library's Southern Voices Conference, but to be honest my expectations had been set pretty low by the lackluster review of the book. I was so surprised to find myself enjoying this book enormously! I did recall a couple of Walker Percy characters, and the comparison to Confederacy of Dunces was appropriate...but this book treaded the difficult waters of staying humorous and intelligent but not resorting all the way to "loser lit"... it did not evoke sadness like some of those books did, and I found myself laughing more than I ever do when reading a novel. The author's use of language was a huge asset to the book -- I am usually turned off when authors seem to be trying to impress with an abundance of "big words" -- THIS author, however, constructed some of the funniest sentences I have read in recent years. The characters who were no more than cardboard thick were still funny in their placement in the story. I couldn't recommend this book more! I am looking forward to reading more by this southern author.

While Wonderdog is a fast an easy read, Inman Majors gives glimpses of his complex understanding of the English language. Between laughing out loud at the antics of Dev Degraw, I found myself re-reading several areas in which Majors shows off his talents as a true wordsmith. Thanks for a really enjoyable book! I am looking forward to more.

The humor of this book is quick and intelligent. "At this point the basement smells like a subtle mixture of dead man's toes, cheese fondue, and a barrelful of monkey ear wax set aflame." Highly recommend this book. Would make a great gift for hipper fathers. Reminds me of some of the old Burt Reynold's comedies...but better. Would transfer to the screen successfully. Jason Bateman as Dev.
