Book Description
Climatic Change is a rapidly evolving domain that has prompted the publication of numerous scientific works in recent years, reflecting both the public and scientific interest in the topic. This book focuses upon climate processes, variability and change and applies the general principles related to these issues, particularly in Switzerland. Although a small country, Switzerland is characterized by complex topography where climatic processes are often enhanced due to the presence of the Alps. In addition, there is a remarkable density of observational data in both the natural and social sciences that enable a comprehensive assessment of climate processes, their long-term trends and their impacts.
This book draws upon recent scientific work by the author, as well as by close colleagues working within scientific networks both in Switzerland and Europe, in order to provide the reader with up-to-date information on climate processes in the course of the 20th and 21st centuries.
This book is intended for students from the undergraduate level onwards and researchers interested in climate issues specific to the alpine region.

Book Description
The question of a possible temporal variation of the fundamental constants was raised by Paul Dirac in his "large number hypothesis" in 1937. Today it appears in the context of the search for a unified theory of the fundamental interactions. It touches both fundamental and applied physics, as the postulate of the unalterability of the constants is the foundation for modern metrology. The book presents reviews written by leading experts in the field. Focussing on the question of variations of the fundamental "constants" in time or space, the chapters cover the theoretical framework in which variations are expected and the search for variations of quantities like the fine-structure constant, the electron/proton mass ratio, g-factors of proton and neutron etc. in astrophysical and geophysical observations and in precision experiments with atomic clocks and frequency standards.
Book Description
The Feynman Lectures on Gravitation are based on notes prepared during a course on gravitational physics that Richard Feynman taught at Caltech during the 1962-63 academic year. For several years prior to these lectures, Feynman thought long and hard about the fundamental problems in gravitational physics, yet he published very little. These lectures represent a useful record of his viewpoints and some of his insights into gravity and its application to cosmology, superstars, wormholes, and gravitational waves at that particular time. The lectures also contain a number of fascinating digressions and asides on the foundations of physics and other issues. Characteristically, Feynman took an untraditional non-geometric approach to gravitation and general relativity based on the underlying quantum aspects of gravity. Hence, these lectures contain a unique pedagogical account of the development of Einstein's general theory of relativity as the inevitable result of the demand for a self-consistent theory of a massless spin-2 field (the graviton) coupled to the energy-momentum tensor of matter. This approach also demonstrates the intimate and fundamental connection between gauge invariance and the principle of equivalence.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating.......2000-04-14
This is a wonderful book which shows how a classical field theory like General Relativity can be derived from a quantum field theory. It also points out the extreme difficulty of accomplishing this in the case of gravity and ending up with a consistent, anomaly free theory.
Readers of this book will benefit from familiarity with both quantum field theory and relativity as well as a certain amount of mathematical sophistication. Don't be fooled by the similarity of title to other "Feynman Lectures on..." because this book is based on an upper level graduate physics course and assumes the background of a typical PhD student in physics.
Deep, complex and difficult going but well worth the effort to see the elegance of the connection between General Relativity and QFT.
General relativity as a quantum gauge field theory........1999-02-06
Feynman gave a series of lectures on gravitation at a graduate seminar at Caltech in 1962. The lectures were recorded and transcribed by Morinigo and Wagner. A very readable introduction on quantum gravity was added by the editor, Brian Hatfield (whose book on quantum field theory and strings, I also recommend.) This is the only book I've seen which develops GR from a quantum field theory point of view. Feynman's lectures show that the GR field equations result from the requirement of gauge invariance under Lorentz transformations for a massless spin-2 field (i.e graviton). This is a more fundamental approach than the usual differential geometric framework and shows what the equivalence principle really means in terms of fundamental symmetries. Highly recommended for a modern field theory viewpoint of GR.

Book Description
The relation between quantum theory and the theory of gravitation remains one of the most outstanding unresolved issues of modern physics. According to general expectation, general relativity as well as quantum (field) theory in a fixed background spacetime cannot be fundamentally correct. Hence there should exist a broader theory comprising both in appropriate limits, i.e., quantum gravity. This book gives readers a comprehensive introduction accessible to interested non-experts to the main issues surrounding the search for quantum gravity. These issues relate to fundamental questions concerning the various formalisms of quantization; specific questions concerning concrete processes, like gravitational collapse or black-hole evaporation; and the all important question concerning the possibility of experimental tests of quantum-gravity effects.
Book Description
This book contains a survey of the use of the Liouville (and super-Liouville) equation in (super)string theory outside the critical dimension, and of the complementary approach based on the discretized space-time, known as the matrix model approach. Supersymmetry is given particular attention, both in the continuum formulation, by means of the Liouville equation, and through the consideration of the super-eigenvalue problem. The methods presented here are important in a large number of complex problems, e.g. random surfaces, 2-D gravity and large-N quantum chromodynamics. The comparison of different methods in the study of such problems permits a cross-evaluation of the results when both methods are applicable and new predictions when only one of the methods may be used.
Book Description
This book presents contributions on particle theory, quantum field theory, general relativity, quantum gravity, string theory and cosmology. These represent the outcome of numerous discussions, taking place among the authors over a period of several years, about the research landscape of present-day fundamental theoretical physics. Indeed, the resultant book documents their attempt, out of their respective and highly specialized scientific positions, to find a way of communicating about methods, achievements and promises of the different approaches which shape the development of this field. It is therefore also an attempt to elucidate the connections between these approaches, and present them not as disjoint ventures but rather as facets of a common quest for understanding. Readers interested in fundamental approaches of theoretical physics will find this book highly stimulating and enlightening.

Book Description
This book serves two purposes. The authors present important aspects of modern research on the mathematical structure of Einstein's field equations and they show how to extract their physical content from them by mathematically exact methods. The essays are devoted to exact solutions and to the Cauchy problem of the field equations as well as to post-Newtonian approximations that have direct physical implications. Further topics concern quantum gravity and optics in gravitational fields.
The book addresses researchers in relativity and differential geometry but can also be used as additional reading material for graduate students.

Book Description
The authors of the national bestsellers Mine Are Spectacular! and The Botox Diaries apply their trademark wit and wisdom to another delicious read. Join Hallie Lawrence Pierpont as she’s whisked away on a journey into her past love life that leads to her future.
Hallie’s husband, Bill, doesn’t even wait until they get home from dropping off their youngest daughter at Yale to announce that he’s leaving–for fitness trainer Ashlee (two e’s, perky breasts, and shiny hair to boot). After first succumbing to an Oreo-induced coma, Hallie is determined to get her life back. An unexpected call from an old college boyfriend sets a plan in motion. Whatever happened to all those men she didn’t marry?
First up is Eric, now an international businessman and number 277 on Forbes’s “Richest People in the World” list. He and Hallie used to put a nickel in the piggy bank every time they made love. Now Eric would like to renew the investment. Next she finds Rav Jon Yoma Maharishi–formerly known as Barry. Her onetime backpacking boyfriend has become the spiritual leader at the Heavenly Spirit Retreat Center, and their reunion would be a little smoother if he weren’t in the midst of a three-day silent meditation. Kevin, the sexiest man she ever met, is now a scuba-diving photographer working on Angelina Jolie’s latest movie. When he seduces her into joining him at his beachfront paradise on Virgin Gorda, Hallie can overlook his gaggle of bikini-clad friends, but can a woman survive on a steady diet of sex, sharks, and air tanks?
Back at home with her best friend, Bellini Baxter, Hallie visits an all-night spray-tanning salon and Soho’s legendary Cellulite Exorcist, whose secret weapon looks suspiciously like an Oreck vacuum cleaner. Hallie’s college-age children are protective of their mom but embarrassed to have her back in teenage territory–the world of dating and condoms. Finally, Hallie confronts the great love she swore she’d never see again and resolves an old family secret.
Janice Kaplan and Lynn Schnurnberger tell a heartfelt and hilarious story about moving forward by looking back. By turns poignant and laugh-aloud funny, this is a must read for every woman who’s ever wondered about the men she didn’t marry.
Customer Reviews:
from Tarah of LoveReads! (www.love-reads.info).......2007-09-27
Left alone and open-mouthed Hallie {now} Laurence is a sudden divorcee, her husband barely waving as he drops her off after a trip dropping their daughter at Yale. Dazed and confused she immediately immerses herself in a Oreo cookie eating and soap opera watching cocoon. With help from her daughter however she decides that she should try to get out a bit. Not only does she travel outside but actually tries to work with nature and literally takes a hike. Sadly, she is no more enlightened then when she began is sporting bee stings and lots of cut an bruises. She after being rescued she comes upon a good idea why not see what happened to the men of her past? Have they become successful or are they still living with their parents?
First comes college boyfriend Eric who is now a high powered businessman with a new pad with a great view. Still as charismatic as he was twenty years before but a lot busier, even taking calls during their dinner date. Next comes Ravi a Bohemian she met on her her travels through Europe after graduating college, who now as it turns out; is gay. Following Ravi is her high school boyfriend Kevin who is now a underwater photographer in Virgin Gorda (one of the British isles). They hit it off as soon as she lands on the island, fitting in a little to well her thanksgiving vacation turning into a three week escapade. The fact that both are GU (geographically undesirable) stands in the way ultimately leading to the relationships demise but helping her gain some prospective in the process.
What does this mean for Hallie? Will she end up alone? Will she go back to her husband? Well you will just have to read to find out. I thoroughly enjoyed this book its well thought out story and funny quips every so often make it a great read. Not only is it an enjoyable read but it also has a message, that only when you are happy with yourself can you be at peace at least in some part with the world.
Who has the kind of life to go hunting for ex boyfriends after 40???.......2007-08-20
More to the point, who on earth even wants to go see what our ex boyfriends look like after 20 something years??? Come on already!
This is an ultra light read that will soon be forgotten and never recommended.
It's flat and full of voids, the characters are not really developed and I just didn't buy the whole plot here, if you can call it a plot that is.
This is not the kind of book that will leave a print on your mind.... It didn't make me laugh out loud like Marian Keyes does every single time, nor did it entice me to find out more about the main character.
In all honesty just another plain lifeless chick lit book I won't recommend to you.
An absolute delight!!! .......2007-06-29
No matter what any other reviewer has said about this book, READ IT.
Joyous, empowering, funny and sad. Ultimately, a triumph of the
human spirit. Is it somewhat unrealistic? Probably. Most of us would
not have the financial means to do what this woman did, but her eventual
healing and strength is so uplifting and would be of great benefit to anyone going through a painful divorce or separation. Unlike Danielle
Steele's characters, this woman does not go crawling back to the miserable guy who dumped her. This woman has the self-esteem to wait
for the right person, even if he never comes along. I didn't want it
to end. It made me laugh out loud. I then lent it to my friends who
loved it as well. Definitely a woman's book - and not for the ultra
conservative type. If you read it when your depressed, it is guaranteed (by me) to make you feel better again. Loved it, loved it, loved it!!!!
cute, unrealistic, but good fluffy beach read.......2007-06-25
Hey, I would have stayed with the guy on the island..but anyways. This was a cute read while I was traveling by plane to Chicago. Some things were unrealistic, far-fetched. But overall, I laughed outloud a dozen times and it was a fun read.
How Hallie got her groove on..........2006-12-13
As Hallie and her husband Bill are dropping their last child off at her dorm, Hallie is looking forward to spending some quality time alone with her spouse. Unfortunately, Bill has other plans, namely a new apartment and a new relationship with his trainer Ashlee (with two "E's"). After emerging from a fog of Oreos, home shopping channels, and general depression, Hallie picks herself up and takes her daughter's advice to go out on a hike. Of course that ends up being a disaster, but a chance meeting with a Tom Sheppard on the side of the road hatches a plan. Tom is a friend of billionaire Eric, one of Hallie's college lovers. After hooking up with Eric, she wonders where the rest of the guys that got away are and what they are up to.
And so the quest begins. Many of her misadventures result in hilarity, as she discovers that most of her former paramours are single, and a few seem pretty interested. When she hooks up with Kevin, an underwater photographer based in the Caribbean, the sparks fly and she thinks he might be a match. But could conservative lawyer Hallie find everlasting happiness with bohemian Kevin?
The writing duo of Janice Kaplan and Lynn Schnurnberger has penned another hysterical tale filled with wry observations and quick pacing, though a bit far-fetched, but hey - it's fiction after all! It is nice to see adult heroines once in awhile, and the duo does a great job of fleshing Hallie's character out.
