Arabian Deserts provides a comprehensive coverage of all the deserts of Arabia largely based on the author’s experience in Arabia over the last fifty years. It deals with every type of desert found there, including those formed by great sand seas, dunefields, evaporites, clay pans, stony plains, volcanic flows, desert plateaux and mountains, deltas, and desert islands. Distinctive landforms of Arabia deserts are described, together with their geological setting and the influence of climates both past and present. The six great sand seas of Arabia are emphasized since Ar Rub’ al Khali Desert forms the world’s largest continuous sand desert. Sources, sedimentology, and the mechanisms of formation of these great sand deserts are examined. Distinctive sand dunes and interdunes types found in Arabia are described, classified and explained. Fluvial processes are discussed, as well as the many oases, and lake deposits formed in milder, more humid intervals. Extensive areas of black, basaltic, volcanic desert are described covering three times the area of Belgium. Ecology of Arabia and human influence on desertification are outlined. The macro-habitat preferences of three conspicuous and widely distributed species of lizards (Aspidoscelis tigris, Callisaurus draconoides, and Uta stansburiana) were examined across four geomorphic landforms (sandy wash, rocky wash, alluvial plain, and alluvial deposit) in the southern Mojave Desert, California. All three species were non-randomly distributed across the four geomorphic landforms. The goal of this study was to develop less ecologically generalized habitat models (LizLand) than the vegetation-based wildlife-habitat relationship models in the California Gap Analysis Program (CA-GAP). Conceptually, LizLand is a geomorphological approach to habitat modeling in arid environments. Specifically, LizLand is a series of spatially explicit habitat models that define and predict habitat for A. tigris, C. draconoides, and U. stansburiana in Joshua Tree National Park and the Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command, Marine Corp Air Ground Combat Center. LizLand models resulted in higher resolution habitat models with minimal reduction in model accuracy. These models more accurately captured the complexity of the Mojave Desert ecosystem and offered greater ecological resolution in identifying habitat in contrast to the CA-GAP models.

We describe the production of a landform map of North Africa utilizing moderate resolution satellite imagery and a methodology that is applicable for sub-continental to global scale landform mapping. A mosaic of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) apparent surface reflectance imagery was compiled for Africa north of 10^o N. Landform image endmembers were chosen to characterize ten different types of vegetated and unvegetated desert surfaces: alluvial complexes, dunes, dry and ephemeral lakes, open water, basaltic volcanoes and flows, mountains, regs, stripped, low-angle bedrock surfaces, sand sheets, and Sahelian vegetation. Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Analysis (MESMA) was applied to the MODIS mosaic to estimate landform and vegetation endmember fractions. The major landform in each MODIS pixel was identified based on the majority endmember fraction in two- or three-endmember models. Accuracy assessment was conducted using two data sources: the historic Landform Map of North Africa [Raisz, E. (1952). Landform Map of North Africa. Environmental Protection Branch, Office of the Quartermaster General.] and Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data. Comparison with the Raisz landform map gave an overall classification accuracy of 54% with significant confusion between alluvial surfaces and regs, and between sandy and clayey surfaces and dunes. A second validation using 20 Landsat images in a stratified sampling scheme gave a classification accuracy of 70%, with confusion between dunes and sand sheets. Both accuracy assessment schemes indicated difficulty in vegetation classification at the margin of the Sahel. A comparison with minimum distance and maximum likelihood supervised classifications found that the MESMA approach produced significantly higher classification accuracies. This digital landform map is of sufficiently high quality to form the basis for geomorphic studies, including parameterization of the surface in global and regional dust models.

Are two in one better than one?.......2006-03-06

Ace Fantasy has packaged the MYTH series as collections of volumes where they package two of the stories in one book cover. In this particular instance this does not work at all as the two stories are so completely different and dissimilar that one wonders why they did it. The reason, of course, is that these two volumes happened to fall one after the other chronologically and so they ended up sharing the same cover.

The first book "Mything Persons" is classic Aahz and Skeeve. The zany story line has Aahz trying to apprehend some fugitives by cold cocking Skeeve and bursting into a world populated by vampires and werewolves. When he does not return, the rest of the gang goes in to rescue him and the normal mayhem ensues. Of course, the ending is typical with much hilarity and absolutely nonsensical events happening to end well. We are treated to all of the characters that have been following Skeeve in the past few books and get to meet some from the very first book who come back in a way that promises that they will become bigger parts in the future.

The second story is completely different. This one is really a serious reflective novel on the growth paths that adults take. At one time or another Skeeve, Aahz, Tananda, Massha, and Nunzion all reflect on what it means to grow up and how adults should behave towards one another. While there is a thin plot involving a preposterously complex card game and a character assassin hired to bring Skeeve down a notch, this is not in the same league as the previous five volumes. The humor is almost completely absent in a book that is turning rather serious. Even when the author tries to liven things up by introducing a bimbo companion to Skeeve by the name of Bunny, we find out that she is really a smart accountant who puts on the sex kitten act as a defensive mechanism!

So, if you are looking for vintage Asprin, the first volume will be to your liking while the second will drive you batty! I am wondering how the rest of the series shapes up as the second story here suggests a major departure from the norm and a completely different direction for the series to go in.

I will read the next volume (two-in-one set) just to see how it goes. I suggest you come along to, as the journet might be fun, or might be serious....

Five stars for Mything Persons, ONE star for LMM.......2005-06-04

This was the point at which the Myth series began to go downhill, largely due to Asprin's desire to begin telling stories about Skeeve's development as a person instead of his wacky adventures. Don't get me wrong -- I love characters who grow and change -- but they should do so because of their experiences, not because the author manipulates them into continual introspection.

In Mything Persons, the last good book in the series, Skeeve discovers that someone's come into his house and then taken it on the lam out the back door. This is a very big deal, because Skeeve's house is built on a dimensional boundary -- whoever went through that door disappeared into a completely unexplored world. Upon learning that the intruders are wanted fugitives, Aahz steps through the door to find them ... and never comes back. It's up to Skeeve, Guido, and Massha to enter this world, rescue Aahz and find the fugitives.

Mything Persons is a classic Aahz-and-Skeeve adventure, where we see Skeeve operating not merely on his own but as a real leader. The alien dimension is nicely realized and evocative, and there are some nifty subplots about Skeeve's discovery of the fugitives' identity.

In Little Myth Marker, Skeeve gets peer-pressured into playing Dragon Poker -- an absurdly complex game whose rules he is clueless about -- and ends up winning the marker of a down-and-out player, said marker represented by the player's small daughter. At the same time, Don Bruce has decided that Skeeve doesn't fit the profile of a Mob boss because he doesn't have a moll, so he sends over a choice bimbo to fill the role. Worst of all, a bunch of rival magicians jealous of Skeeve's success hire the Ax, the dimensions' greatest Character Assassin, to ruin his reputation.

While there's some comedy potential in this setup, it's never realized. Instead, we get Aahz ruminating on parenthood, Nunzio talking about his odd but remarkably uninteresting past, Massha whining about being unappreciated and Skeeve delivering lectures on the battle of the sexes. Over and over, rather than dealing with their problems, the Myth crew talk, talk, talk, talk, talk.

Sadly, this book ended up being the model for the rest of the series. The next two books from Skeeve's viewpoint would consist of a brief, boring "adventure" followed by an entire chapter of Skeeve reflecting on how it changed his worldview. The only decent book after this one is MYTH Inc. in Action, and it's not good enough to justify the agony of plowing through the two books before it.

another fine myth.......2003-12-20

Book five has Skeeve wandering around in searching for Aahz in a dimension where magic doesn't work and humans are the monsters. It's hilarious--a world of vampires and werewolves.
Little Myth Marker brings in Markie, who adds a new level of hilarity to the gang. And Skeeve goes into his high stakes Dragon Poker. Marvelous.

I read these books about 15 years ago in high school and recently picked them up looking for some light reading. The first two volumes of double Myth tales were enjoyable enough, but by the time I got to this collection, Asprin's style of writing was beginning to grow somewhat annoying. He goes way overboard providing explanation for the characters attitude and motivation and turns them all into well mannered polite caring do-gooders who never break a promise and always turn their enemies into new best friends. It gets old really quick.

Another major problem with the books at this point is the fact that it takes so long to establish the plot and to rope in all the supporting characters that the resolutioins seem anti-climactic at best. The second book in this collection is a bad offender in this respect as most of the book is spent with no action taking place and lots and lots of boring exposition on why everyone is so good at giving advice and helping to be a good team member. Also, the big mystery character is pretty non-mysterious and I saw the outcome of the thin plot coming a mile away.

Interdimensional search silliness.

The Myth gang, in this, the fifth book of the series are now working out of the Bazaar of the Dimensions. Thanks to the Deveels Aahz goes looking for someone in another dimension, and doesn't reappear. Guess who has to go find him? Where he actually is means the usual things that Skeeve can rely on aren't going to work for him, so more fun and games to be had.

Skeeve, Aahz and company have relocated from Possiltum to the Bazaar in Deva. Their humble abode supplied by the Deveels has a mysterious back door that leads to trouble. A group of con artists escape the Bazaar through the back door and the Deveels want the con artists or the money they stole. Not one to part with money, Aahz goes through the door into the unknown and doesn't return. Skeeve and his companions plan a rescue, but magic doesn't work in this dimension. What will they do now?

Asprin succeeds with yet another romp through dimensions with Skeeve and company. If you enjoy his other books, you'll enjoy this one as well.

Great Story Only Outdone By a Greater Cast.......2004-03-31

The Myth Adventures series is one of my favorites. One of the better fantasy series out there (in my opinion even better than the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter series) they are a quick read and are good for a ton of non-stop laughter. The reading level is not very advanced, as a 4th grader could easily pick up the book and know exactly what is going on. However this does not detract from the enjoyment an adult can receive from this hilarious novel. The modern jokes and references that might be missed by a child are sure to be appreciated and enjoyed.

All of the old characters are back as well as a few new ones to mix things up. Robert Asprin brings together a brilliant cast of diverse characters that are sure to make you smile and rush out to buy the next book in the series just to find out what happens next.

Myth-Ing Persons is a must read for any Robert Asprin fan as well as any fan of fantasy as a whole. His unique style guarantees enjoyment for all who read it. Also if you like Myth-Ing Persons you will love Robert Asprin's other books in the series as well as his Thieves' World Series, which is also very good.

Funny and with a good story........1999-10-26

5 stars for the first 5 books in the Myth Adventures series. These books are hilarious, have great characters, and have good stories, too. I highly recomend.

Very funny, good story too. Irreverant tale of a mage that becomes a court magician. Easy reading, no profanity or explicit sex.
