Book Description
Beautiful, informative, and inspirational, this book answers the challenge of how to turn any large space into a warm, inviting home rich with personal style. While many people want large living spaces, few realize the challenges they present--such as high ceilings, long hallways, and double-height rooms--until they're face-to-face with them. This well-illustrated resource (200 full-color photographs) is packed with expert tips and techniques on how to meet the challenges of a large space.
Readers will find solutions, advice, and resources from celebrated interior designers, architects, furniture specialists, contractors, and other design professionals on:
* The big space challenge--answers common questions such as: How much will it cost? How long will it take? Who will I need to hire?
* Design and size in relation to the human figure
* Dividing and defining space by function
* Paint and wallpaper
* Furniture selection
* Choosing and arranging art and accessories
* Lighting
The author also includes a valuable Frequently Asked Questions section, as well as resource information for everything from furniture to flooring and lighting.

Not for Do It Yourself decorators.......2007-02-18
I expected this book to be handy hints and examples about decorating large spaces that the average person could apply at home. eg. Hang lower light fittings, paint horizontal stripes on the walls to lower ceiling etc. After all, a lot of "average" homes have one very large room these days. Instead it is a round up of very high end decorators and the enormous houses/mansions/castles they have worked on. I'm not sure who it is aimed at - other decorators? clients of decorators? It certainly did not have much information for the average decorator.
A masterful combo of lush illustration and practical guide.......2003-11-14
This is like several books in one, a one-stop design bible that I'll keep/refer to for many different things over time. It's:
-a beautiful book of design photography,with captions that teach as well as describe (e.g.,problem-solution format for design principles)
-a well written,very thorough, highly accessible step by step approach to design for every area in and around the home with big spaces. Nothing overlooked!
-an equally thorough directory of architects, designers, products, and resources of all sorts
-a wonderful collection of easy-to-browse sidebars with practical tools and techniques (I especially liked the feng shui tips, lighting designs and punch lists). Bravo!
This is one fantastic reference book........2003-11-06
I am thoroughly impressed with the breadth of information offered in this book. The author includes insights and advice from a wide variety of experts, including designers, painters, lighting specialists, etc. The many different perspectives means there are many different solutions for making your big space comfortable. AND, the book helps you get started by including lists of questions to ask yourself. As an avid reader of magazines (from Elle Decor, Metropolitan Home, Gourmet, Food & Wine, etc) this book is incredibly well done!
Fantastic Source for Decorating Large Spaces.......2003-11-05
Finally a book for both the non-design professional and interior designer that tackles the problems related to decorating a large builder's home. Big Home, Big Challenge reveals top designers' secrets on how to make large, unintersting spaces feel cozy and inviting. A must for those of you who live in developers' homes who are tired of feeling out of scale with the rooms you inhabit. This book will teach you how to tame the rooms and differentiate them from your neighbors' rooms.

A great starting point.......2007-09-02
This book is a great starting point for kids to get a handle on drawing. My 6 year old and 4 year old love it! They use this book nearly every day to help with their drawings. Art is not my thing, so it even helped me!
Great buy!.......2007-07-02
My son's preschool has this book and when I saw what he could draw from it, I knew I had to get it. He has never been much into drawing, but with the help of this book, he really enjoys it! It's a great book!
Wonderful.......2007-04-16
I bought this for my almost 5 year old daughter who loves to color and draw. At kindergarten round up the teacher was telling us how important it is to teach your child how to draw step by step. I think this book is exactly what we needed. My daughter likes how the pictures turn out and she is able to follow the directions 1,2,3,4 with some help.
Excellent tool for 5-9 set.......2006-11-05
My daughter loves to draw but gets frustrated when her attempts are not recongizable to others. This book breaks down each animal into simple shapes a child can copy. It is easy to follow and my daughter has been pleased with her results. I have seen an improvement in her drawing ability and confidence to try more difficult things.
Very good instructions and entertainment.......2006-01-29
My son is 6 years old and he loves this book. The instructions are very clear, he has no difficulty in following them. He has created dozens of pictures since buying the book and is quite happy to spend hours simply making pictures. He gets a real sense of accomplishment from being able to create the pictures. I highly recomend this book.
Customer Reviews:
Easy and fun.......2007-05-13
This book is great! Very cute to look at, easy to follow, and the colorful, fun pictures are wonderful. We have this for my son, but all of his friends (girls and boys, 6 years old) want to draw everything on every page and they can do it very well. Steps are simple to master for ages as young as 4, and the book helps build confidence because the kids can really draw what is shown. Variations are easy too. We love it. Great gift idea!
the Shipping Cost will Get Ya!.......2007-01-10
The item arrived on time and as pictured so I would order from this seller again. But on a side note: Even though the item itself is cheap the shipping will get ya!
terrific for small and older children.......2002-05-12
The wonderful , colorful illustrations inspire children in an easy step by step non-intimidating way. Even the 5th graders at the school I teach art at love this book and so do I.
Good for beginners.......2000-11-02
Even young budding artists can learn to draw with this simple and colorful book. Easy, step-by-step instruction and vivid crayon and marker illustrations are enticing to young children. This was a great tool for my 6-year-old daughter who loves to draw, as she could easily complete the drawings in the book. I highly recommend this one for beginners!

I can draw animals.......2000-07-16
I really love this book. Every time my daughters asked me to make a drawing of an animal, I would come up with a "kindergarden look kind of drawing". With this book, I have been able to draw animals that really look neat and realistic, and the steps are extremely simple to follow. I bought some other drawing books, but even though the drawings are more sophisticated, the instructions and steps are much more complicated. I think, on its kind, its a great book, very easy to follow, and with very rewarding results.

Book Description
A stunning collection by William Abranowicz, The Greek File captures the essence of Greece-an alluring country where life itself is stripped down to its most essential components and the ordinary becomes extraordinary. From a single white cloud floating in a clear sky to a wrinkled linen shirt drying in the sun to shores dotted with throngs of buildings like pebbles washed in from the sea, Abranowicz's work elevates simple everyday objects to objects of austere beauty. These photographs capture the many facets of the Greek islands: their serenity, exceptional light, and arresting art and architecture.
Just as Abranowicz reveals the beauty of Greece through imagery, so too does world-renowned author and scholar Edmund Keeley unveil the subtle poetry of this Hellenic paradise. With an introduction by Keeley as well as an excerpt from The Colussus of Maroussi by Henry Miller, this elegantly designed volume is both a visual and literary treasure that is as rich and enchanting as the country it portrays.

Images that reflect both mood and soul........2001-05-07
You will swear that some of these images are pencil drawings and others a part of a dream. William Abranowicz is a gifted photographer whose passion for pristine landscapes and still life reinvents this artform. As a collector of his work, I was thrilled to see his first book published. The world has enjoyed his images without knowing they were enjoying the world through his eyes. Through his lens, we see a world that invites all the senses to be aroused. I will cherish this book as a personal treasure from my friend.

When the Rivers Run Dry: Water--The Defining Crisis of the Twenty-first Century

Book Description
In this new, enlarged edition, John Opie updates his groundbreaking work on the environmental history of the Ogallala aquifer and plains farming. He addresses the impact of the 1996 Farm Bill (Federal Agricultural Improvement and Reform Act) and looks at the recent movement of industrial hog farming onto the plains. Opie also develops his argument for the plains as a “moral geography,” a view involving the recognition by society that it has an obligation to balance the responsibility for conserving natural resources with that for keeping a regional people—the family farmers—in operation.
Customer Reviews:
A very good introduction to this topic.......2000-08-12
A few years ago I came across a magazine article that discussed the importance of the Ogallala Aquifer to American agriculture, geography, and society. Realizing that I knew absolutely nothing about this topic I picked up John Opie's book. It's safe to say that I now know more about the Ogallala Aquifer than I could ever have imagined possible.
The book begins with a discussion of the geology of the aquifer, and then moves into the history of irrigation efforts on the Plains since the 19th century, and finally to a discussion of the various irrigation technologies currently used to exploit the aquifer. There is ample discussion along the way about how these technologies have changed over the years as environmental consciousness and the problems of declining aquifer levels have become more prevalent.
This book is not only a very informative look at the Ogallala Aquifer but is pleasantly readable as well. And now that it is (finally) available in a more affordable paperback edition, I'm going to go buy a copy for myself.
