            Book Description

This dictionary covers the discoveries and theories that have evolved to explain the behavior of nonhuman animals, concentrating particularly on ethological ideas and on studies of animals in their natural habitat. The entries discuss basic organic processes as well as the more social topics, and provide thorough coverage of the development of the ideas and approaches of ethologists, sociobiologists, and learning theorists. There are articles on such topics as conditioning, reinforcement, and preparedness.

Dictionary of Animal Behavior and Learning is one of four dictionaries based on the Encyclopedic Dictionary of Psychology, published by The MIT Press in 1983 and cited by American Libraries as an "outstanding reference source" that "speaks to the specialist and nonspecialist alike." They update existing articles while offering many new entries.

            Book Description

Inelastic Analysis of Solids and Structures presents in a unified manner the physical and theoretical background of inelastic material models and computational methods, and illustrates the behavior of the models in typical engineering conditions. The book describes experimental observations and principles of mechanics, and efficient computational algorithms for stress calculations as typically performed in finite element analysis. The theoretical background is given to an extent necessary to describe the commonly employed material models in metal isotropic and orthotropic plasticity, thermoplasticity and viscoplasticity, and the plasticity of geological materials. The computational algorithms are developed in a unified manner with some detailed derivations of the algorithmic relations. Many solved examples are presented, which are designed to give insight into the material behavior in various engineering conditions, and to demonstrate the application of the computational algorithms.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent book...........2006-08-07

Inelastic analysis is a very difficult subject in computational solid mechanics. This book very clearly presents the subject... This book will be a right choice if you are a biginner in inelastic analysis of solid mechanics. If you are a expert, this book will be a useful reference......!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Inelastic Analysis using Finite Elements.......2006-08-04

This book is an excellent and classical book concerning the presentation of methods and applications for inelastic analysis problems. Inelastic stress analysis of solids is combined in a very good way with nonlinear finite element methods. This book is a challenge to deepen inelastic analysis.

                    Customer Reviews:

                    4 out of 5 stars Useful techniques.......2004-04-21

The book covers the gamut of spectroscopic techniques available to analyse an interface (surface) between two substances. The techniques are non-destructive. Often, the aim is to study the surface composition. This is especially true in the important case where one substance is a fluid, typically air, and the other substance is a solid. Do oxide layers form in such a situation, for example? Do molecules from the air clump onto the surface?

Most of the cases considered have a subject that is flat. This enables spectroscopy with specular reflections, as opposed to diffuse reflections from rough surfaces. Plus, when you get specular reflections, you might also get refracted transmission inside the target substance. And possible the excitation of surface plasmons on the surface, for example. Under such circumstances, we get nice instances of applied electromagnetic theory.

                        Description:
A microscopic laser-induced breakdown spectrometer was used to evaluate the analytical matrix effect commonly observed in the analysis of geological materials. Samples were analyzed in either the powder or pressed pellet forms. Calibration curves of a number of iron and aluminum compounds showed a linear relationship between the elemental concentration and peak intensity. A direct determination of elemental content can thus be made from extrapolation on these calibration curves. To investigate matrix effects, synthetic model samples were prepared from various iron and aluminum compounds spiked with SiO"2 and CaCO"3. The addition of these matrices had a pronounced analytical effect on those compounds prepared as pressed pellets. However, results indicated the absence of matrix effects when the samples were presented to the laser as loose powders on tape and results were compared to certified values, indicating the reliability of this approach for accurate analysis, provided the sample particle diameters are greater than ~100@mm. Finally, the simultaneous analysis of two different elements was demonstrated using powders on tape.

                              Book Description

This text presents a systematic discussion of electromagnetic waves and radiation processes in a wide variety of media. The treatment, taken from the field of plasma physics, is based on the dielectric tensor; the authors unify approaches used in plasma physics and astrophysics on the one hand and in optics on the other. Necessary mathematical tools, such as tensor algebra, Fourier transforms, and distributions, are included in Part One. Parts Two, Three, and Four cover the properties of media, the properties of waves in various media, and the general theory of emission processes, such as multipole emission, bremsstrahlung, and cyclotron emission. Part Five is at a more advanced level and covers specific emission processes in greater detail.

Jenny Colgan's second novel, Talking to Addison, arrives with a flourish following the success of her debut, Amanda's Wedding. Sharp, quirky one-liners complement merciless observations of human foibles and the London scene to make this romantic comedy a cut above the rest.

The story opens with the modern-day heroine Holly trapped in the flat-share from hell with members of Scary Clean Freaks Incorporated, ruled by the obnoxious Carol who "dispensed ... Robert de Niro-to-doomed gangster stares." Even when Holly escapes the suburban inquisition, life still isn't a bed of roses--she's an unemployed florist, in love with a recluse, and being bullied. She's in good company, though, when she moves in with a bunch of equally maladjusted misfits: Josh, a terminally nice boy, has issues; Kate, the high-flying, no-nonsense career girl, wilts every time a married man comes along; and then there's Addison, the drop-dead-gorgeous lodger ("Johnny Depp in geek form") who never leaves his room, already has a girlfriend (albeit over the Internet), and is a certified Star Trek fan.

With Talking to Addison, Colgan ties together her comedic talents and her flair for storytelling to create an offbeat, hilarious tale about an ordinary girl's search for Mr. Right--with the inevitable Mr. Oddballs getting in the way. --Nicola Perry, Amazon.co.uk

                                2 out of 5 stars Incredible disappointment..........2006-11-12

I read, and loved, Amanada's Wedding. It was funny, fast-paced, and had characters you could identify with and a villian you loved to hate. So when I saw Talking to Addison, I was very excited to read it. I do have to admit that there were funny parts to this book, and I actually kind of liked the ending (despite the fact that a lot of the events leading to it were highly unrealistic). But, it was actually painful to get through the entire middle portion of the story! I was very disappointed in this book. Unless you are a HUGE Jenny Colgan fan, I wouldn't bother with this one.

2 out of 5 stars Funny Until It Falls Off The Rails.......2004-12-06

"Talking to Addison" begins as a very quirky, funny, British read, with its protagonist, Holly Livingstone, spewing one liners about and insults to her insane flatmates, coworkers, and the world in general. The author does well in establishing the novel's place and in creating Holly's voice and, to a certain extent, her friends. However, the characters and the subject are all things we've seen and read before, in more successful ways. Holly and her cohorts remain two-dimensional, underemployed, disillusioned twentysomethings. As for the plot, it carries along nicely until the final third where it completely goes off into a far-fetched farce. While the last act holds a few smiles, all I could do was wonder where Addison's mother was in all of this mess, as she completely disappears at the most crucial time. The novel becomes unbelievable and loses any of its earlier charm.

                                5 out of 5 stars Tremendously funny!.......2004-07-20

After reading and enjoying Amanda's Wedding, I wasn't sure how Talking to Addison would measure up. I was hoping for a fun, light novel, which I did get, but then there was a bonus -- Talking to Addison was HYSTERICAL!

This book probably has the most real comedy in it that I've ever read. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my life. The timing was perfect! The characters were so fantastic and goofy. I loved every second of this book. I hope there is more to come from Jenny Colgan.

Talking to Addison begins with Holly Livingstone living in the land of nightmares. Her roommates are crazy clean freaks, and Holly just can't take it anymore! So she begs her best friend, Josh, to let her move in with him and his roommates. This is where the story really begins. Living in the flat are Kate, a neurotic career-woman, and the ever elusive Addison, who holes up in his cavern of a room instant messaging his agoraphobic girlfriend 3000 miles away. Holly is determined to make him hers, which leads to some very funny scenarios.

I recommend this one very highly. I rarely give chick-lit 5 stars because for the most part they are good, but not earth-shattering. Well, I couldn't help myself on this one! Talking to Addison is super-funny and I think well deserving of the highest praise.

4 out of 5 stars Not You're Typical Chick Lit.......2004-06-15

Another winner from Jenny Colgan! This book was so fun to read. It was part screwball comedy, part love story. The heroine is not your typical couture loving girl about town. In fact she's practically hopeless in social situations.

1 out of 5 stars Big Let Down.......2004-03-02

What can I say? I never even bothered to finish it...

This book was a big disappointment, as I expected better from Jenny Colgan. Amanda's Wedding was funny, gripping, had loveable characters...but I just don't know what happened in Talking to Addison.

This book was just so boring!!! The plot was sluggish, the characters were under developed and, frankly, odd and unrealistic.

Not once did I laugh...This book wasn't 'fluffy'....no, this book was just pointless.

This book is not worth the buy or the read. Pick up Amanda's Wedding instead.
