Book Description
Contemporary physics, especially quantum theory, has raised profound questions about the relationship between the methods of science and the reality these methods seek to investigate. D'Espagnat investigates these questions as well as how we should answer them. Part I examines the practices of contemporary physicists and addresses the criticism philosophers of science have made of these practices. The doctrine of physical realism, adopted by most physicists and many philosophers of science, comprises Part II. Part III explores the consequences of physical realism for our understanding of what science can seek to know of reality, and concludes by outlining the position contemporary physics indicates we should take.

Book Description
In the too-quiet town of Oakwood, only the lucky die of boredom…and new homeowner Zack Walker isn’t feeling lucky. Whoever said the burbs were boring will think twice after reading Linwood Barclay’s hilarious debut mystery, in which Dad learns the hard way that he doesn’t always know best.
Zack wouldn’t blame you for thinking he’s safety-obsessed. True, he masterminded a plot to trade his family’s exciting city lifestyle for one of suburban tranquillity. True, even after this strategic move, Zack still has issues with family members who forget their keys in the front door, leave their cars unlocked, or park their backpacks at the top of the stairs—where you could kill yourself tripping over them. Just ask his wife, Sarah, or his teenage kids, Paul and Angie, who endure their share of lectures.
Zack knows that he needs to chill out and assume the best for once—but we know what happens to those who assume.
When Zack realizes their two-faced developer sent a petty thief to fix their leaky shower, he starts fighting hard to ignore the fact that Oakwood isn’t the crime-free paradise he was hoping for. But his brief state of denial comes to an abrupt end when, during a walk by the creek, he stumbles across a dead body. Even more shocking, Zack actually knows who the victim is—and who might want him dead.
With a killer roaming around their neighborhood and Zack’s overactive imagination in overdrive, he’s sure things can’t get any worse. But then another local is murdered—and Zack’s paranoid tendencies get him implicated in the crime. While his wife is trying to remember why she married him in the first place, and his kids are considering whether it’s time to have him committed, Zack decides there’s only one thing he can do. To protect his family—and avoid being busted for a crime he didn’t commit—he’s going to have to override his safety-first instincts, tap into his delusions of machismo, and track down the killer himself.

Skip It.......2007-03-21
Someone named Edna Buchannan (I think, I don't have the book in front of me) called this thing hilarious in a blurb on the cover. Never trust anything old Edna says. What the author has done has stocked the book with "wacky" characters and put it on auto pilot. There is an professional S&M role player/accountant (see a whacky combination, the fun has started already)who the author assures us isn't really a hooker, thank God. A slick slimy real estate developer with mob ties (there's a reach, why is it nobody else ever writes about sleazy real estate developers?) and a slob of a corrupt local politician. With this cast how can the book fail? It's worse that it sounds. I actually ordered a second book by the author without realizing it at about the same time so I have another laughfest to look forward to. Hope my sides can hold out as the belly laughts keep piling up.
Bad moves review.......2007-01-04
A decent book but not a great book. bought it because a friend said my writing was like his, ( and Linwood is published afterall)
ok plot, but no killer payoff. this guy does not write as well is donald westlake. now there's a killer author.
Absolutely hilarious........2006-09-24
The cover states "If Dave Barry wrote mystery, it would be something like Barclay's Bad Move." Which is true, because as I read it I was reminded of Dave Barry's mysteries, which apparently the writers of the blurb didn't realize Barry wrote - though I'd call both this one and Barry's books "criminal capers." However, as a Dad with (so my kids say) a little bit of the central character's tendencies in me, I found Barclay's Bad Move even better than Barry's work. This is a very funny book, enough so that when I read this back in April, '06, I ordered the hardback of the second novel, Bad Guys, without waiting for it's soon-released paperback version. The story centers around Zack Walker, a married father of two, whose attempts at life's lessons to his family tend to . . . go awry. Throw in a few fellows of criminal intent, and you have a great story.
Funny.......2006-07-06
I found this book to be pretty funny. I can see doing some of the hijinks that the main character pulls myself. It starts just a bit slow but then gains steam later on. Pretty good if you like lite crime mystery stuff.
After a slow start..............2005-09-14
It turns into an excellent novel. This novel reminds me of Carl Hiassen's novels when they were funny. This one gets off to a slow start, but when it gets rolling it never slows down. Very well done.
Book Description
Here's one championship title we Cleveland fans can grasp and proudly hold aloft: Most Miserable. Boston fans no longer have their Curse to bemoan--and anyway, they've got those Patriots Super Bowl trophies. (Aargh!--Bill Belichick!) Chicago fans? Don't start. The Cubs, yes--but what about all those unbeatable Bulls teams? (Ugh!--The Shot!) No, Cleveland owns bragging rights when it comes to the biggest, longest, worst drought in professional sports championships. And it's not just The Fumble, The Drive, The Catch, Game Seven, and all our other big-game losses. We've endured enough bad luck, dumb trades, dud draft picks, and just plain goofy moments to keep us crying in our beers for decades. And they're all collected here. Could this little book end the worst championship drought in major league sports? Honestly, no. But it will give you something fun to read while you're waiting for the Browns, the Tribe, the Cavs, or someone in Cleveland to finally win the Big One! It may not take away the misery, but at least it offers a little humor to go with the groans!
Customer Reviews:
harmless fun.......2007-04-03
this has some great anecdotal stories for those of us who grew up with the misery that accompanies being a cleveland sports fan but, by no means, is it good literature. it's entertaining, if not somewhat confounding because of the memories that it dredges up, if you want some light bathroom reading.
Kenny Roda not a Cleveland Sports Fan.......2006-04-12
Kenny Roda is a Steeler fan. Don't let him fool you in his review. He is a crummy Steeler fan who doesn't know one thing about sports suffering. He has seen his Pirates win the World Series, his Steelers win the Super Bowl, and his Penguins win the Stanley Cup.
Listen to WTAM. WKNR sucks.
Long Drought for Superbowl and the World Series!.......2006-03-11
The book was very interesting. It was a quite an experience to learn from, with the desire of failing to win a national championship. Being a Cleveland fan for 25 years, how much longer do we have to wait to win the superbowl. Remember 2 out to go to win the World Series. Watch out for those flying bottles, whoa did you see that! Yeah, I was there too!
Just What We Needed!.......2005-12-07
I don't believe in curses but something has been going on in Cleveland sports for most of my life and it hasn't been good. Finally someone has put the crazy, absurd and disappointing down on paper and I think it's great. I was too young to remember Herb Score and my family talks about Rocky Colavito like he was a saint. I remember I cried as a little kid when Brian Sipe's pass ended up as "Red Right 88". But there's other neat stuff in this book that's funny and not so well known that helps us Cleveland sports fans deal with our plight. Curses! is a fun and easy book that's a must for every Clevelander, sports fan or not.

A Nice Compendium for the Under 1500 Crowd.......2006-11-20
Who of us over the age of 50 doesn't love Fred Reinfeld and in a younger day, didn't learn at least some of his chess from his books? Certainly, Fred recycled a lot of his material over and over; was often hyperbolic and at times over-selective in his annotations; and isn't going to teach you modern grandmaster chess.
But in "Improving Your Chess" --- really a compendium of extracts from several of his other works --- Fred provides a solid 180 or so pages of what he does best: basic instruction for the improving player. I'd say this book is good for the USCF 1000-1500, perhaps petering out a bit at the upper end but still providing value.
Fred propounds and briefly illustrates the basic principles which we think we know but often overlook in the heat of tournament combat--- simple things like development, control of the center, not wasting time with unnecessary pawn moves. He talks about how to exploit White's initiative, and how Black can take control if White plays incorrectly. Now, translating his few examples into actual practice in your own games will take a lot of over-the-board practice; this book alone cannot work miracles (although I don't know of a book that can, actually).
The most original part of the book is quite close to the front; the "eight bad moves" (referring actually to eight bad things to do -- or not do!) although again seemingly obvious, remains fresh and useful even over 50 years later.
The end of the book contains a series of tactics and checkmate problems, excerpted from his "1001" books. It's a nice selection and working through them will certainly improve your play.
Appended to the book is a very high-level overview of common openings; it's rather dated and far too brief to be of much use. However, it's written in a common-sense style and the ideas may be of interest.
Should you buy this book? It's available on the used market for a couple of dollars, and at that price, it's an enjoyable read with more than enough content to be of practical use.
An Excellent Guide to Become Aware of Things We do Wrong.......2006-08-07
With the help of this book anyone can improve his playing level, of course with a reasonable amount of application. What I found unique about this book is that it helped me play strongly by first making me aware of some of the things I was doing wrong. The author focuses on what he calls "The eight bad moves", describing them with enough detail so you identify yourself so one can overcome the faults that are producing them.
The eight bad moves analyzed in this book are:
- Neglecting development of your pieces.
- Exposing your king to attack.
- Making too many queen moves in the opening.
- Weakening your castle position.
- Getting pinned.
- Failing to guard against captures.
- Underestimating your opponents treats.
- Losing a won game.
But this book is not only about identifying bad moves, you will also learn new ideas and techniques that will be most helpful in actual game playing. In summary I really believe this is a great book for beginners.

Lima Beans Would Be Illegal: Children's Ideas of a Perfect World
ASIN: 0803726406 |
Book Description
Robert Bender asked thousands of schoolchildren what advice they thought other kids (and some grown-ups) ought to know. The result is an enlightening and often hilarious view into the thoughts and experiences of children as they offer their take on:
When you shouldn't give your dad a free haircut (hint: avoid naptime)
and...
The best way to know if there's a monster under the bed (answer: put your little sister under it-and listen for a crunch!)
Plus much, much more! Taken all together, this irresistible companion to Bender's Lima Beans Would Be Illegal offers the most valuable piece of advice of all: "Listen to kids-they know what they're talking about!"
Customer Reviews:
Great humor for kids and adults.......2002-10-27
This is a very funny book. Robert Bender has polled thousands of school children on the best, the worst and the silliest advice they have to offer. There are gems such as "You're only a kid once -- get in trouble while you can" and "Never save your page with gum". Each page has four or five quotes with connected, humorous illustrations. A fun book to read a bit at a time. Might be useful book in a school setting during a unit about quotations or advice. This would make a wonderful present for a child in your life.
Sage Advice from the Young............2002-09-19
Robert Bender, author of Lima Beans Would Be Illegal, polled thousands of schoolchildren around the country to find out what important advice they would give other kids and grown-ups, wrote it all down, and came up with this must read, down to earth book, Never Eat Anything That Moves: Good, Bad, and Very Silly Advice from Kids. Some entries are thoughtful... "Be the kind of person that you would like to know." "Old people aren't as old as you think." "Your worst may be someone else's best." Some are silly... "Don't cross the monkey bars without underwear." "Spraying your hair with milk and then drying it doesn't dye your hair blonde." "Make sure the fish is dead before you flush it." And some are just plain weird... "Don't put a bee on a leash." "Never eat a magnet when you have braces." "Use Brussels sprouts for golf balls." But each piece of sage advice is kid tested and filled with insight, wisdom, and definitely, lots of humor. So as Mr Bender tells us at the end... "Don't forget to have fun when you grow up. We're all kids at heart." Read, learn, and enjoy!
