Book Description

Vitruvius's De architectura is the only major work on architecture to survive from classical antiquity, and until the eighteenth century it was the text to which all other architectural treatises referred. While European classicists have focused on the factual truth of the text itself, English-speaking architects and architectural theorists have viewed it as a timeless source of valuable metaphors. Departing from both perspectives, Indra Kagis McEwen examines the work's meaning and significance in its own time.

Vitruvius dedicated De architectura to his patron Augustus Caesar, the first Roman emperor, whose rise to power inspired its composition near the end of the first century B.C. McEwen argues that the imperial project of world dominion shaped Vitruvius's purpose in writing what he calls "the whole body of architecture." Specifically, Vitruvius's aim was to present his discipline as the means for making the emperor's body congruent with the imagined body of the world he would rule.

Each of the book's four chapters treats a different Vitruvian "body." Chapter 1, "The Angelic Body," deals with the book as a book, in terms of contemporary events and thought, particularly Stoicism and Stoic theories of language. Chapter 2, "The Herculean Body," addresses the book's and its author's relation to Augustus, whose double Vitruvius means the architect to be. Chapter 3, "The Body Beautiful," discusses the relation of proportion and geometry to architectural beauty and the role of beauty in forging the new world order. Finally, chapter 4, "The Body of the King," explores the nature and unprecedented extent of Augustan building programs. Included is an examination of the famous statue of Augustus from Prima Porta, sculpted soon after the appearance of De architectura.

5 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to bore the heck..........2003-10-02

out of any reader who thinks s/he loves architecture, confusing architecture's greasy, grimy engine of manifestation as a 'built thing' with the SPECTACLE of architecture. The book deals with the ten books by V. It has a lot of Latin, with references to contemporary intellectual influences, namely Stoicism and Pythagoreanism. As much as I respect the author's labor, I must admit, she does get a little dry at times being so sincere (read pedantic) to her calling as a scholar. There is a bit more information than any thinking practitioner of architecture would really need. But then, any thinking architect will know what to cull from this rich feast/tour of the post Civil War Augustan Roman imperium.
So as to not repeat the content of the existing review, I shall speak more of how this book is relevant now by reminding the reader that the structure of the American Imperium is not all that different from the Roman. Just as it was true of Rome, it is still true today that all 'avante-gardes,' despite their rhetoric, work to actually further the Work of Empire. In fact, their very podium on which they utter their battle cries is built into the very structure of Empire.
The current fascination with the idea of 'body' can be, it turns out, traced back to V himself, who was among the very first to use the term 'corpus' to refer to his writing, as well as to architecture. By corpus, he meant 'whole' as opposed to fragments, and there were many commentaries at the time lying about on many a topic, but all in fragments. So V sets out to put it all together into a co-ordinated whole. According to the author, ORDINATIO is a word that crops up often in V's 10 Books but not as often as RATIO. The book makes it clear why these terms do not carry the meaning when translated into Order and Reason, respectively. This is where the author's surgical description of the Roman conception of the world comes in handy as well as fascinating.
The author, unlike the reviewer, finds her own conclusion "unsettling": namely that architecture as V defines it for the rest of the Western world henceforth (V distinguished it from 'building') is, by fate, inextricably tied to IMPERIUM. That is, Architecture IS the shadow of IMPERIUM.
As the archetype of Empire's Architect, V speaks for all architects who serve Empire, all Empires everywhere. While this book makes the modest claim to be looking only at the 10 Book's Roman context, the content, if read carefully, will reveal how V's "prophecy" about architecture is coming to fulfillment more today than ever before now that architecture can move so much faster and shift shape with digital ease, having long ago jettisoned the baggage of the 'perfect proportion/body.'
V was the first to write about the central role of machines (especially machines of war (killing) and spectacle (laughter and forgetting)) in architecture. Le Corbusier was perhaps the last "classical" architect to bring the circle of fate to its point of origination with his saying that, "A house is a Machine for Living in."

It's hard to think of a physical or psychological problem that this book does not address--and from two or three different directions. Whether the solution to a health concern lies in a cup of herbal tea, a dose of traditional Chinese medicine, a massage, a visualization exercise, or a combination of all four, Letha Hadady extends a wise, helpful hand and walks us through her vast store of alternative-medicine knowledge.

Hadady, an herbalist, acupuncturist, and author of Asian Health Secrets, bases her healing treatments on the theory that there's an original and positive you that the right therapies can uncover. She says that the illness, injury, or just lack of joy that's keeping your original self under wraps can be overcome with the use of herbs, homeopathic remedies, Eastern (Chinese, Japanese) medicine, massage, and visualization techniques. Blending different approaches to healing is her strategy--she often combines a dose of homeopathic medicine with herbs and Eastern medicine to forge the most effective cure.

Personal Renewal provides solutions to problems ranging from the mundane to the spiritual. Is carpal tunnel syndrome a problem for you? Try the regimen in chapter 6, "Computer-Related Stress and Pain." Feeling angry and exhausted while going through a tough personal time, like a divorce? Skip to chapter 16, "Heal Your Broken Heart." Class reunion coming up? Treat yourself to an herbal facelift using the recipes and techniques laid out in "Defy the Law of Gravity."

Each chapter opens with a statement of the goals to be met and a list of the materials you will need. (One caveat: certain ingredients in the medicines that Hadady recommends may strike some as over the top--like the silver, gold, or processed coal, i.e., bitumen, supplements.) Recipes, a glossary of herbal terms with pronunciation guidelines (especially helpful for the Chinese terms), and a directory of suppliers for the rarer products round out this clearly written, inspiring handbook to uncovering the original you. --Stefanie Durbin

4 out of 5 stars From Abingdon Press.......2007-02-22

Much has been written, and much has been said, about the decline in mainline North American Protestantism. Sophisticated sociological and theological analyses have posited a number of solutions to the problem. While such analysis is helpful, the author reminds us that much of it fails to see the simple reality behind the problem: a loss of essential spiritual fervor. The author's ministry, both within Hope United Methodist Church in Detroit (where he is pastor), and in numerous congregations and conferences across the country where he has preached, lectured, and taught, has been spent in calling Christians back to a vital relationship with Jesus Christ and to an immediate and transformative experience of the Spirit. In this new book, the author brings together the best of his writing and thinking on the problems of the African American church and mainline Protestantism. Readers will find here important guidance on how to establish a congregation that is genuinely lay-led, how to move the gospel from the church building out into the neighborhood and onto the street corners, and how to preach genuine, scriptural holiness to a skeptical and relativistic age. Throughout, the author drives his point home with the force of the simple message that is his hallmark: the church has failed because its leaders have failed to develop and maintain a fervent, personal devotion to the Lord. To those looking for hope and for new life in a church grown spiritually cold, this book speaks a powerful word.

                    Book Description

Current policies in planning emphasise the importance of rejuvenating neighbourhoods. This new guide seeks to bridge the gap between rhetoric and reality, promoting an interprofessional and collaborative approach to making localities work. The objective is to design neighbourhoods that are healthy, safe, friendly and attractive for residents and users, whilst being more self-sustaining in terms of water, energy, local services and work. Social inclusion, accessibility and the quality of the public realm will be central tenets. The guide is distinctive in showing not only what should be done but also how it could be done. The book provides a practical guide with illustrations and case studies.

                        Book Description

Named one of "The New Healers" on the cover of New York magazine, holistic physician Frank Lipman presents his seven-step program for cultivating habits that naturally strengthen the body's resilience.

                        Dr. Lipman's Seven Steps are:

Step 1: Take Responsibility for Your Health and Well-Being
Step 2: Remove Toxins and Decrease Your Total Load
Step 3: Recognize Your Unique Diet
Step 4: Replenish Nutrients and Balance Hormones
Step 5: Release Tension and Relieve Stress
Step 6: Revitalize with a Detox
Step 7: Reconnect to Yourself, Others, and Nature

In terms of health, most of us live at 50 percent of our capacity. Total Renewal takes us the rest of the way there.

Many people suffer from digestive disorders, low-grade toxicity, or fluctuating blood sugar levels. While not ballooning into full-fledged diseases, these conditions hamper our enjoyment of life and prefigure illnesses that loom in our future. Comprised of seven key steps, Dr. Frank Lipman's Total Renewalprogram reverses the unhealthy habits and poor functioning that we slowly develop and take for granted over the course of our lives, replacing them with new behaviors that leave us stronger, healthier, and more durable.

A prominent clinician on the leading edge of new concepts in complementary medicine, Dr. Lipman brings a vital, fresh voice to the literature of self-care and holistic health.

                        5 out of 5 stars Total Renewal.......2007-06-08

This is a refreshingly open-minded source of health and medical information by a person's whose medical training began with the most traditional of medical approaches and expanded because of his receptiveness to his own intuitive sense and compassion. Tremendously valuable source of information and plan to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Because we're all one and life goes on within you & without you.......2006-10-12

I must, at the outset, declare an interest in my review. I am a diabetes sufferer currently being treated with a regimen of drugs living in a country where the foods one buys from any supermarket are diametrically opposed to the maintenance of good health.

My concern here is with the book per se as opposed to the beneficial effects that I may have gained from following the guidance contained within. It should not, therefore, be taken as a testimony about the good works of the doctor's method.

Given these qualifications, the authors, Dr. Lipman and Stephanie Gunning have done an excellent job. Essentially the focus of the book is that western medicine has become too narrowly focussed on the treatment of the symptoms of diseases throught the widespread use of manufactured drugs. Dr. Lipman's background has led him to explore alternative methods of dealing with the diseases themselves and found that some of these methods have generated results which are hard to ignore.

The book chronicles a series of steps which people should follow in order to restore a sense of balance in our bodies and in our lives and thus enable us to be fit and well.

I would stress that Dr. Lipman is not advocating a wholescale rejection of western medicine. Instead he embraces a holistic paradigm which incorporates best practices from everywhere, utilising approaches from yoga and acupuncture as well as herbalism and other areas in concert with the traditional enlightenment medical science perspective. He advocates utilising our physicians as partners in our health which we need to take personal responsibility for and advising us to be assertive with our medical practitioners if we feel that our concerns are not being addressed.

There are some drawbacks however, to implementing some of the steps he advocates. Firstly, in my experience, it is not easy being a vegetarian in the United States even though he is not advocating a vegetarian approach. Similarly, for working parents in corporate America, there is often not the time nor the capability to prepare food in the right way. To those who say that one must make time, I would only say that those people have the means to sculpt their schedules the way that they want or they do not have to be like the other rats in this particular trap because their partners are bringing home enough money to allow them that luxury. The main issues are essentially twofold. The lesser of the two is the lack of provision of retail outlets where health foods and specialist vitamins can be purchased over the counter. For instance, although I only live thirty minutes away from the New York metropolis, the nearest health food store is a twenty-two mile, thirty minute car journey away. The more serious negative factor is the sheer volume of sugar and calories contained in foods of all descriptions which are available from supermarkets and food outlets all over the country. At a back to school night last week the principal was boasting of the replacement of colas in the drinks machines with healthy drinks, and healthy snacks instead of chips and candy, while across the street from the school the catchment are parents continue to chop for food at the local supermarket, totally oblivious to the damage these foods do to their health.

That aside, some of the practical problems of instituting such a program, the central point is one with which I do not dissent whatsoever. The key to a long and healthy life is clearly a sense of balance, a yin-yang from which many in the world have strayed. A recent study in England, reported in the Financial Times indicated that Britain is now the fat man of Europe indicated by the huge volume of people who are now considered morbidly obese. This problem has severe implications for life and health but also for healthcare costs directly and indirectly.

Total renewal is one guide to avaoiding such problems and I have no compunction about heartily recommending this book to all readers.

This is the best book on self-cure and healthy living, period.
It's easy to read and easy to follow. A friend of mine recommended this book to me a while ago and now I am recommending this book to anyone who believes in healthy living.
Dr. Frank Lipman provides detailed scenerio, and cures for 20th century health issues that he has helped his patients to overcome. I loved 'total renewal' book so much that I've been buying it for my friends and family members. The best part is that you don't need to 'join' website subscription if you are looking to cure your 'condition' like Kevin Trudeau's book on 'Natural Cure' does. In fact, I was quite shocked to see how Kevin Trudeau of 'Natural Cure' book never tells you about how to cure any illness in his book unless you become a member for his website which ranges from $10 to $500, which is just another way of making quick money.
