Book Description
Yeast biomass is an excellent source of proteins, nucleic acids, and vitamins. It has been produced and consumed in baked goods and other foods for thousands of years and offers significant advantages when compared to other potential new microbial protein sources. Use of Yeast Biomass in Food Production provides up-to-date information regarding the chemical composition and biochemistry of yeasts, discusses the biotechnological basis of yeast production and possibilities for influencing yeast biomass composition using new techniques in molecular biology. The book examines techniques for producing yeast protein concentrates (and isolates) while still retaining their functional properties and nutritive values, as well as the various uses for these materials and their derivatives in different branches of the food industry. Finally, the book explores possibilities for the production and industrial use of other yeast components, such as nucleic acids, nucleotides, cell wall polysaccharides, autolysates, and extracts. Food microbiologists and technologists, as well as biotechnologists, will discover that this book is an invaluable reference resource.

Book Description
While the choices of microbial and eukaryotic expression systems for production of recombinant proteins are many, most researchers in academic and industrial settings do not have ready access to pertinent biological and technical information since it is normally scattered throughout the scientific literature. This book closes the gap by providing information on the general biology of the host organism, a description of the expression platform, a methodological section—with strains, genetic elements, vectors and special methods, where applicable—as well as examples of proteins produced with the respective platform. The systems thus described are well balanced by the inclusion of three prokaryotes (two Gram-negatives and one Gram-positive), four yeasts, two filamentous fungi and two higher eukaryotic cell systems—mammalian and plant cells. Throughout, the book provides valuable practical and theoretical information on the criteria and schemes for selecting the appropriate expression platform, the possibility and practicality of a universal expression vector, and on comparative industrial-scale fermentation, with the production of a recombinant Hepatitis B vaccine chosen as an industrial example.
With a foreword by Herbert P. Schweizer, Colorado State University, USA:
"As a whole, this book is a valuable and overdue resource for a varied audience. It is a practical guide for academic and industrial researchers who are confronted with the design of the most suitable expression platform for their favorite protein for technical or pharmaceutical purposes. In addition, the book is also a valuable study resource for professors and students in the fields of applied biology and biotechnology."

Book Description
The general field of fundamental and applied biotechnology becomes increasingly important for the production of biologicals for human and veterinary use, by using prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms. The papers in the present book are refereed articles compiled from oral and poster presentations from the EFB Meeting on
Recombinant
Protein Production with Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells. A
Comparative View on Host Physiology, which was organized in Semmering/A from 5th to 8th October 2000. A special feature of this meeting was the comparison of different classes of host cells, mainly bacteria, yeasts, filamentous fungi, and animal cells, which made obvious that many physiological features of recombinant protein formation, like cell nutrition, stress responses, protein folding and secretion, or genetic stability, follow similar patterns in different expression systems. This comparative aspect is by far the point of most interest because such comparisons are rarely done, and if they are done, their results are most often kept secret by the companies who generated them.
Audience: Presently, a comparable book does not exist because the compiling of manuscripts from all fields of biotechnology (prokaryotic as well as eukaryotic, up to animal cell biotechnology) is not done in general. This particularity makes this book very interesting for postgraduate students and professionals in the large field of biotechnology who want to get a more global view on the current state of the expression of recombinant biologicals in different host cell systems, the physiological problems associated with the use of different expression systems, potential approaches to solve such difficulties by metabolic engineering or the use of other host cells, and the cooperation between process development and strain improvement, which is crucial for the optimisation of both the production strain and the process. This book should be in every library of an institution/organization involved in biotechnology.

Book Description
A complete revision of Goody's classic 1964 work, this volume offers a systematic discussion of atmospheric radiation processes that today are at the center of worldwide study and concern. It deals with the ways in which incident solar radiation is transformed into scattered and thermal radiation, and the thermodynamic consequences for the Earth's gaseous envelope, identifying aspects of the interaction between radiation and atmospheric motions as the central theme for atmospheric radiation studies. As a complete treatment of physical and mathematical foundations, the text assumes no prior knowledge of atmospheric physics. The theoretical discussion is systematic, and can therefore be applied with minor extension to any planetary atmosphere.
Book Description
What happens to a gal who's addicted to Jane Austen? Naughty Lizzie Parsons lives a Sex and the City twenty-first century Manhattan life but yearns to be a Jane Austen nineteenth-century lady. Dear, oh dear! Can a Jane Austen addict ever find happiness with a modern Metrosexual Man?
Customer Reviews:
Fun in the Smart Set.......2006-12-17
Sex and Sensibility is just that - the struggle to maintain both sides of one's personality. Clever, funny, enjoyable to read and to think about. One wonders - are we all worrying about having both sex and sensibility.
I hope there is a sequel - I want to know more about these characters.
Vereee bad!!!!!!.......2006-04-18
Ugh....I never write Amazon reviews, but this book truly deserves a bad one. I can't believe other ppl gave it such great reviews. The characters are shallow and moronic to say the very least, Lizzy being one of the worst characters in the piece, and unfortunately the protagonist. And I totally agree the use of "vereee" constantly got on my nerves, and so did all the brit slang used by these "Americans" (???). I did not like one character in this book! What a disappointment...I was looking fwd to a nice fun read.
Sex & Sensibilitly is a lovely tonic for difficult times.......2006-02-23
Rosemarie Santini paints a vibrant portrait of New York journalist Lizzie Parsons who has a sense of humor while searching for passionate love in a city where the focus is on sex, fashion and money. Lizzie consults Jane Austen for advice which she takes to heart and which pokes fun at her own Anglophilia and those of her pals. Perhaps her naughty sophistication is too wry for people in the hinterlands - thought Sex and the City certainly was adored everywhere. Santini's wicked tale is a treasure.
Horrible drivel - deserves no stars at all.......2006-02-19
The only trace of Austen here is the "heroine's" name, Lizzie. If you are an Austen fan, stay far far away. After about fifteen renditions of "very" as "veree" in the first chapter, I wanted to throw the book out the window. Not to mention the extremely annoying characters, supposedly Americans, who call men "chaps" and use other ridiculous, pompous affectations which I feel certain would merit a brilliant lampoon by Austen. Instead, we are forced to suffer these smugly self-congratulatory dullards, presented as not the comic relief, but as the main protagonists of the piece. (Yes, I realize they are supposed to be rabid Austen fans and thus, presumably Anglophiles. Instead, they come off as those pathetic poseurs who insist on using British expressions like "bloody" or "shag" when they grew up in the wilds of American suburbia. You know the type.) Ugh. If you are a huge fan of Sex and the City, run out and buy this book. You'll feel right at home, although this book lacks even the occasional witty insight offered by the show to leaven its crass materialism and generally shallow perspective on human relationships. Perhaps you have to be from New York to enjoy these people or recognize in them anyone you could even remotely imagine as real. For me, they were so unpleasant to be around that after several chapters, my only wish was for Lizzie to be hit by a bus, and "veree" shortly! Ah, yes. Pity the millions of us unfortunate enough to live out here in the boondocks, with nothing to do but have sex and watch the corn grow. Surely we must be desperate for some of that naughty New York sophistication. And yet...You still couldn't pay me to reread this tripe.
Cute story.......2006-02-11
This is a story of Lizzie she is a modern girl who like all girls she is looking for love.
This book is alittle Sex in the City, Bridget Jones all wrapped up in a Jane Austen flavor.
The book is fun and a fast book to read. I thoroughly enjoyed.
