            Book Description

This digital electronics text focuses on "how to" design, build, operate and adapt data acquisition systems. The material begins with basic logic gates and ends with a 40 KHz voltage measurer. The approach aims to cover a minimal number of topics in detail. The data acquisition circuits described communicate with a host computer through parallel I/O ports. The fundamental idea of the book is that parallel I/O ports (available for all popular computers) offer a superior balance of simplicity, low cost, speed, flexibility and adaptability. All circuits and software are thoroughly tested. Construction details and troubleshooting guidelines are included. This book is intended to serve people who teach or study one of the following: digital electronics, circuit design, software that interacts outside hardware, the process of computer based acquisition, and the design, adaptation, construction and testing of measurement systems.

There’s only so much taffeta and toile a girl can take.

Passionate, talented, and noticeably stunning, Mia Savard is the top designer at her father’s thriving bridal design company. But her life has hit a bit of a snag. Thirty, recently dumped, and suddenly single, Mia has grown weary of white lace and craves couture. But when Mia’s most spectacular creation is leaked to the competition, the silk hits the fan. Someone inside Savard Creations is trading with the enemy. In the world of fashion, that means war.

Enter private investigator Joe Kerr, the exceedingly handsome ex-cop hired to nab the clever mole. Stalking dangerous territory–where jittery brides, hysterical mothers, and deadline-challenged designers clash in clouds of gossamer and gossip–Joe is torn between suspecting Mia and seducing her. Amid the treachery, hijinks, and flirtations galore, it seems that for Mia, romance just might be tailor-made.

Mia Savard is a designer at her family's successful Kansas City bridal gown company. She is thrilled when the governor's daughter chooses one of her designs for her high-profile wedding, but she and the company are devastated when the design is stolen and advertised as the work of a rival company. The private investigator, Joe Kerr, is hired to track down the identity of the thief, while dealing with his attraction to Mia (who can and is considered a prime suspect), the volatile personality of Mia's father, various and sundry messy relationships, and bad winter weather.

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed Return Engagement, I was hoping for more of the same enjoyable quality. Alas, this book did not deliver in either the romance OR mystery departments. Moreover, it also failed to provide accurate basic details about the bridal business.

The identity of the thief who stole the design of the wedding gown created for the governor's daughter was woefully obvious almost instantly. The book was far too long; easily 100 pages could and should have been cut from the final version. Too much time was spent on the problematic behavior of the female protagonist's father and his relationship with the mother and a competitor. The main couple's 'conflicts' and obstacles are so minor and cursory as to seem nothing more than obligatory and their quick development from strangers to being in love made me wonder if I had somehow missed a key scene.

From the back cover on, the multiple technical mistakes create too many moments when a reader knowledgeable in fabrics, bridal gown wear, and the bridal industry is jolted to a halt by completely-ridiculous and totally-avoidable errors. The back cover refers to toile as a wedding gown fabric. Um...NO. Toile is the screenprinted fabric of (originally) French origin showing shepherdesses and milkmaids under trees and is usually seen in Mario Buatta interior design pages. I think the copywriter probably meant, 'TULLE' (netting fabric used in bridal skirts for, say, ever). Chintz, similarly, is curtain fabric and not within recent memory has it ever been used in a bridal gown. And finally, the supposedly-incredible, cutting edge gown design for the governor's daughter was nothing more than a pink and white Bo Peep dress. Yikes! Hardly cutting edge and hardly the type of design for which another company would pay $500 or even 5 cents.

Save yourself a few cents and don't bother buying this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good story, but..........2006-11-01

I enjoyed the story, I truly did. My one pet peeve is that for a fashion designer, Mia had a lousy sense of personal style. At least that's what all the descriptions sounded like. Sweatshirts over turtlenecks, a courderoy jumper over a turtleneck, a poncho over a turtleneck (seeing a pattern here?), a pink sweater with rhinestones and a brown fur collar, a purple stadium coat. Yikes! I can't help but imagine her as either a soccor mom or someone who shops in juniors, not a savvy, chic designer. Sorry, that was the one thing that really put a dent in an otherwise well-written and tremendously fun book.

I wish she'd found Stink a girlfriend and that we'd heard from some of the more fun minor characters a little more too, but what can you do?

4 out of 5 stars Delightful and fun to read, but too many loose ends.......2006-08-02

Mia Savard has grown tired of designing couture bridal gowns for her father's design company. But the day she turns in her resignation, Mia becomes the number-one suspect in an investigation into who sold the design for the governor's daughter's wedding dress to the competition.

Lynn Michaels, author of several novels, including Honeymoon Suite, hasn't disappointed her fans with her latest, Marriage by Design. The story is lively, romantic and entertaining and--while Michaels leaves too many loose ends at the unraveling of the mystery for true mystery buffs and it fizzles where it should climax--chick lit fans will love the charming characters and the sweet love story that comes to a steamy apex of its own.

Armchair Interviews says: Delightful and fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars Lynn Michaels does it again........2006-07-29

This was just an all around great romance. The chemistry between Mia and Joe was sizzling and they were very likable characters. The story was interesting. The secondary characters were fun. The writing was witty and I found myself laughing out loud throughout. Best of all, it was utterly romantic, which is what I look for in a great romance book. Don't pass this one up.

4 out of 5 stars entertaining contemporary investigative romance .......2006-07-25

In Missouri, one could accuse Lucien Savard, owner of Savard Creations, of nepotism as his most talented wedding gown designer is his daughter Mia. However, Mia who loves fashion informs her father she detests designing wedding gowns, , but Lucien thinks that is a natural reaction for a thirty years old single female dumped by her what's his name boyfriend. She asks him to move her to the trousseau line, but he says no; he claims it is business while she proclaims it is control. As she finishes her resignation letter, a raging Lucien calls the family together to show them their main rival Heavenly Bridals' "latest creation" displayed in Today's Bride magazine is one Mia created for Governor Whitcomb's daughter. Someone sold out the firm.

Private Investigator Joe Kerr is hired to uncover the identity of the traitor. While he struggles to survive landmines tossed by insane parents of brides and grooms and swims through water infested with maniacal designer sharks, he is attracted to Mia. She reciprocates his feelings. However, as they fall in love, he realizes she is the only one who had the motive, means, and opportunity.

This entertaining contemporary investigative romance is a fine fast-paced tale starring a likable lead pair and an eccentric support cast starting with Lucien's whose reaction to the creative property theft sets the tone as he feels backstabbed, fires everyone, and destroys the furniture. The relationship between Joe and Mia is deftly developed from one of initial physical attraction to admiration and love though throughout the transition is the lingering doubt even as the hero deeply believes she is not the Quisling but worries that his heart persuaded his brain. Lynn Michaels RETURN ENGAGEMENT to the wedding world is a fun story.

                          5 out of 5 stars A wonderful novel.......2000-01-19

This understated, beautifully written novel ranges over three decades in the life of Meg Mowbry. Elaine Ford covers a great deal of complex emotional territory -- how people change, or fail to change, over time; how long-ago actions and events continue to shape our lives; how we understand many of our own choices only in retrospect. But what's most amazing about Ford as a writer is how economically she accomplishes all this, and how skillful she is not just about which details to highlight, but which to leave out. After I finished the book I found myself missing Meg -- and even more, I missed the sound of Elaine Ford's quiet voice, making sense of life.
