    Book Description

Everywhere you look people are more aware of what they eat and where their food comes from. In a cafeteria in Los Angeles, children make their lunchtime food choices at fresh-fruit and salad bars stocked with local foods. In a community garden in New York, low-income residents are producing organically grown fruits and vegetables for their own use and to sell at market. In Madison, Wisconsin, shoppers select their food from a bounty of choices at a vibrant farmers' market. Together at the Table is about people throughout the United States who are building successful alternatives to the contemporary agrifood system and their prospects for the future. At the heart of these efforts are the movements for sustainable agriculture and community food security. Both movements seek to reconstruct the agrifood system—the food production chain, from the growing of crops to food production and distribution—to become more ecologically sound, economically viable, and socially just. Allen describes the ways in which people working in these movements view the world and how they see their place in challenging and reshaping the agrifood system. She also shows how ideas and practices of sustainable agriculture and community food security have already woven their way into the dominant agrifood institutions. Allen explores the possibilities this process may hold for improving social and environmental justice in the American agrifood system. Together at the Table is an important reminder that much work still remains to be done. Now that the ideas and priorities of alternative food movements have taken hold, it is time for the next—even more challenging—step. Alternative agrifood movements must acknowledge and address the deeper structural and cultural patterns that constrain the long-term resolution of social and environmental problems in the agrifood system.

      Product Description

Aquaculture - the farming of fish and aquatic plants - has become the world's fastest-growing food production sector, even as the amount of wild fish caught in our seas and freshwaters declines. From fish foods and pharmaceuticals to management of entire aquatic ecosystems, acquaculture is truly changing the face of the waters. Increase growth, however, brings increased risk, and aquaculture now lies at a crossroads. One direction points toward the giant strides in productivity, industry concentration, and product diversification. Another direction points toward the dangers of environmental degradation and the marginalization of small fish farmers. Yet another direction invites aquaculture to champion the poor and provide vital environmental services to stressed aquatic environments. Changing the Face of the Waters offers a cutting-edge analysis of the critical challenges facing aquaculture, balancing aquaculture's role in economic growth with the need for sound management of natural resources. The book also provides guidance on sustainable aquaculture by evaluating alternative development pathways, placing particular emphasis on the application of lessons from Asia to Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. Aimed at policy makers, planners, and scientists, this book provides a comprehensive frame of reference for orienting ideas and initiatives in this dynamic industry.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough Presentation of Commercial Fishing.......2001-03-03

Jens Lund's book is an excellent and thoroughly-documented study of commercial fishing in the Ohio River Valley. We are fortunate that he documented the occupational traditions associated with fishing because the industry is under stress and rapidly changing. Lund provides rich descriptions of virtually all aspects of commercial fishing, from the various species of fish in the rivers to the variety of boats used and built in the Ohio River Valley and extending into ways of using nets, lines, and fish traps. The book is valuable for folklorists, historians, anthropologists as well as biologists and anyone interested in relationships between environmental concerns and culture. I would recommend this book highly and encourage readers to also look at important studies of maritime folklife such as the book "Beautiful Swimmers," which deals with crabbing in the Cheasapeake Bay and "Gladesmen," which deals with fishing and hunting in the Florida Everglades.

                Book Description

This book illustrates the interactions of local-level actors and institutions which govern the management of resources at regional and national levels. It discusses irrigated agriculture, an ideal illustration of resource management's linkage of political power, technology, and the influence of unpredictable, uncontrollable forces of nature. The work attempts to delineate processes of change in a complex geopolitical and economic environment, where crises of various origins--climatic, political, technological and economic--present both obstacles and opportunities to resource managers at all levels. By placing the study of ecological management practices in time, the study directs our focus to accounting for change. The emphasis of this book is on opportunistic responses to crises which arise inevitably in the course of events. The case examined here, the water crisis in Israel, is closely connected to global conflict centered in the Middle East. The information provided in this study is important to an understanding of the local actors in this situation.

                  Book Description

This book is one of the first attempts to examine the issue of poverty in small-scale fisheries from a multi-disciplinary perspective. It represents a state-of-the-art collation and synthesis of the experience of nineteen international experts in fisheries management, planning, economics and other social sciences, including several senior officers form the Department of Fisheries of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UN-FAO). The authors have benefited from the experiences and comments of colleagues from twenty-five African countries participating in the First International Workshop on "Small-scale fisheries, poverty and the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries" organized by FAO and the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID). The book offers a new perspective on the problem of poverty in small-scale fisheries, introducing innovative concepts and ideas and drawing upon recent knowledge generated by in-depth empirical case studies and makes explicit connections with the Sustainable Livelihood Approach and the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries - two prominent frameworks which are recognized, applied and promoted internationally by scholars, practitioners and donor agencies in their work on fisheries development. As well as offering important insights into the problem of poverty in small-scale fisheries and representing a contribution to the work of the `Sustainable Fisheries Livelihood Programme (SFLP)' in West Africa the book also represents a key source of up-to-date information and reference material for anybody interested or working in the fields of poverty and fisheries management in Developing Countries.

                      Book Description

The motion and deformation of rocks are processes of fundamental importance in shaping the Earth, from outer crustal layers to the deep mantle. Reconstructions of the evolution of the Earth therefore require detailed knowledge of the geometry of deformation structures and their relative timing, of the motions leading to deformation structures and of the mechanisms governing these motions. This volume contains a collection of 22 papers on field, experimental and theoretical studies that add to our knowledge of these processes. They are a mixture of review papers on selected topics in the field of structural geology and tectonics and papers on current issues and new techniques and are grouped into four themes: The effect of fluids on deformation; The interpretation of Microstructures and textures; Deformation mechanisms and rheology of crust and upper mantle minerals; Crust and lithosphere tectonics.

                        Book Description

This research monograph presents a systematic treatment of the theory of the propagation of transient electromagnetic fields (such as ultrashort, ultrawide-band pulses) through homogeneous, isotopic, locally linear media which exhibit both dispersion and absorption.
The subject of the book is two-fold: Part I presents a detailed rigorous treatment of the fundamental theory of electromagnetic pulse propagation in causally dispersive media that is applicable to dielectric, conducting, or semiconducting media. Part II provides a detailed asymptotic description of plane-wave pulse propagation in a causal dielectric and provides a rigorous account of the signal velocity of a pulse in a dispersive, lossy medium.

5 out of 5 stars Important; many more people should read it.......2001-11-12

The phenomena covered by this monograph have a long history, going back to 1914 papers by Sommerfeld and Brillouin, but the topic is still not completely understood; Sommerfeld's and Brillouin's work contained errors that have since been corrected, but the topic is quite difficult in terms of mathematics, physics, and experimental apparatus and instrumentation, so much progress remains to be made.

However, much progress has already been made, and much of it by the authors of this monograph. I was unaware of it until very recently, and I found it startling and important reading. It has significant practical implications for various fields, but I gather that many people besides me have been completely unaware of the progress made since 1970; I have recent papers on nuclear effects, radar, and high-powered microwave weapons sitting in my office whose authors were obviously unaware of how much progress Oughstun and others have made, and these papers would have been noticeably improved if they had included consideration of what is now known about pulse propagation in causal dielectrics.

So I urge engineers, physicists and others dealing with issues involving steep rise times of electromagnetic pulses to read this book, and consider how it may affect their work and their conclusions.

Prof. Oughstun has been continuing his research on this topic since his book was published in 1994; his more recent papers are listed in his CV on the Web. I hope he will soon issue a revised edition of this monograph, incorporating his more recent results and those of others; that would be a considerable service to the community. I also hope that Oughstun, or somebody, will produce an equally up-to-date monograph about what is now known on the question of how the pulse propagation phenomena described by Oughstun can alter the properties of the causal dielectrics through which the propagation occurs.

I will conclude by saying that because I have been involved off and on since the late 1960s in work that's affected by the material Oughstun covers in this book, I am both mildly surprised and somewhat embarrassed that I, and apparently many others, have been so unaware of it.

                        Book Description

Nudist Among Us is an old-fashioned approach to humor. Pick a lovable character and place him in unusual situations that spawn absurd reactions. In the collection of stories and comments, the main character finds himself drifting through life haplessly awaiting his next disaster. Coupled with his family of straight men, the laughs are continuous and boisterous. Chester is our new hero, a man who leaves much to be desired in the way of proper and safe planning. He executes many of his daily activities with the skills usually contained in emergency room customers. As much as we like Chester, just about everyone loves Karalynn. Anyone who can withstand the likes of Chester must be an angel waiting for her wings. She follows her husband into one disaster after another without the slightest hint of murderous intention in her heart. Well, maybe just a little mayhem. Take a few hours off and enjoy this book.

                        5 out of 5 stars Give Me a Minute...I'm still Laughing!.......2007-03-23

I especially relish reviewing Nudist Among Us, for it was written by a friend of mine, Allen Parker. When I was first introduced to this southern gentleman, I was told he had a way with anecdotes. This fact is confirmed by any reader of Mr. Parker's book, Nudist Among Us.

On a visit to Allen's house in Virginia, he handed me a manuscript he had put together. He told me it was a collection of his humorous anecdotes. What he didn't tell me was that it was in the hands of a publisher and destined to come out as a book just months later.

Allen is one of those people who can turn the most mundane experience (at least the way he relates it) into a thigh-slapping yarn. Whether it's a story of his substituting on a paper route as a boy, or as an adult husband and father on a camping trip, Allen invests each story with his own particular brand of comic timing. Each yarn has the unmistakable flavor of the South. You can almost hear Allen's Virginia drawl as you read. Were these stories true? Probably. Have they been recorded accurately? Probably not--at least totally. But that's not the point. The best part of the story is in the telling, and Allen performs that task admirably well.

Allen's style is straightforward and without unnecessary decoration. Often, he's the brunt of his humor, sometimes his long-suffering wife and son. But the humor is never hurtful, or unkind. When you finish reading one of his rambling mishaps, you feel as though you had just listened to him tell the tale first-hand, while sitting in his living room with a cup of coffee.

My advice? Pick up Nudist Among Us, make yourself a cup of coffee, curl up in your favorite easy chair and let this facile storyteller charm you with his wit and homespun humor. When you've read the last chapter, you'll wish the book were longer.

                        5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2004-04-05

My copy of Nudist Among Us came with a "Skinny Dipper's License," but it should have come with a 10%-off coupon for a divorce lawyer because I woke my husband so many times from laughing aloud while reading in bed that he threatened to divorce me.

Chester's adventures as a Christian nudist make for the funniest book I've read in a long time and, oddly enough, many of his self-deprecating insights about life, love and family ring completely true, even to someone who would sooner take a beating than appear in public au naturel. Chester is irresistibly endearing, and if there is any similarity between the author and his protagonist, Allen Parker's wife gets my vote for sainthood. But I'm sure she's also glad she has such a fun-loving, devoted husband who clearly loves her almost as much as he loves getting into trouble.

Take a vacation from life's pressures and read Nudist Among Us. It's guaranteed to put a smile on your face and a prayer of thanks on your lips that Chester is not part of your family.

Want some fun? Read "Nudist Among Us" and fun is yours. Parker has penned a creative uniquely quirky laughfest that makes you think,too... Three cheers for the comedic writing gifts of Allen Parker. I want more...get writing.

5 out of 5 stars Don't give this to my mother!.......2003-10-23

This book is laugh out loud funny. It must be really hard being a nudist and an active member of the church! My mother is 78 years old and she doesn't understand that nudity is funny. This book is a great collection of short stories to make you feel less stupid than you feel in everyday life. Also, a nice little paperback stocking stuffer for Christmas. What a hoot!

5 out of 5 stars Too many Laughs.......2003-10-11

If laughs are worth a nickel a piece, this book is a bargain at twice the price. There is something in this book for everyone because it captures the trials and follies in all of us. The short stories are good reads and play to one's imagination. It is a great afternoon escape. I highly recommend it.
