Book Description
The popular view of architecture focuses on individual creative geniuses, those who have designed the most "significant" works. According to Garry Stevens, however, successful architects owe their success not so much to genius as to social background and a host of other factors that have very little to do with native talent. To concentrate only on the profession of architecture is to ignore the much larger field of architecture, which structures the entire social universe of the architect and of which architects are only one part. This book critically surveys that field, exposing many myths and debunking a number of heroes in the process.
Using the conceptual apparatus of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, Stevens describes the field of architecture on two levels. First, he provides a detailed account of the field as it is at any given point in time, describing the different components and their relationships. Second, he analyzes the dynamics of the field through time, from the Renaissance to the present. He discusses the system of architectural education, as well as everyday aspects such as the competition for reputation. He concludes that throughout history, the most eminent architects have been connected to each other by master-pupil and collegiate relations. These networks, which still exist, provide a mechanism for architectural influence that runs parallel to that of the university-based schools.

Amazingly accurate.......2007-08-28
An excellent sociological study of architectural education and profession using a Bourduvian approach. I loved it.

Book Description
On the set with Iñárritu: The making of the final film in the Mexican director's acclaimed trilogy
Mexican film director Alejandro González Iñárritu, along with top photographers Mary Ellen Mark, Patrick Bard, Graciela Iturbide, and Miguel Rio Branco, bring together their highly perceptive visions on cultural diversity in a book that combines seductive images and firsthand remarks on the unique experience of shooting Babel. Winner of the Best Director prize at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, the film is the third in the director's trilogy started by Amores Perros and 21 Grams.
Shot in Morocco, Tijuana, and Tokyo, and involving a multilingual cast lead by Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Gael García Bernal, and Koji Yakusho, as well non-professional actors from the three countries portrayed, Babel continues the director's quest to explore the effects of loss and grief, and seeks to relate the modern implications of ancient myth on the origins of human inability to successfully communicate.
Customer Reviews:
wonderful ideas, poor editing.......2007-05-28
Inarritu's text sheds light on his creative process. His ideas are, for the most part, beautifully expressed; his words are those of a true artist. However, this book was badly edited. There are grammatical mistakes everywhere, quite a few sentences run aground and there are many wrong word choices. I assume that the filmmaker wrote in Spanish and that his work was translated. Edith Grossman is listed as having translated the Spanish into English; surely she would never have turned in such sloppy work. So then, who is responsible for the text? The book lists Maria Hagerman as editor. This is the wife of the filmmaker, someone who is not a native English speaker. Nevertheless, Taschen should not have let this book go into production without employing a line editor with an impeccable knowledge of English. They have done a disservice to Innaritu.
Wonderful Item.......2007-03-11
Wonderful book, great price and great shipping time. Book is worth a lot more than the selling price.
Powerful.......2007-03-08
Powerful first class photography around a film that was equallly well shot and deeply moving. Even if you don't care for the celebrity angle (Brad and Cate), these are strong images in and of themselves. Classic B&W in Morocco, psychedelic color in Japan.
Potent, Often Affecting Images From and Around Iñárritu's Dazzling Global Triptych Film.......2007-01-19
If like me, you were dazzled by the diverse imagery of director Alejandro González Iñárritu's most recent film, "Babel", you will likely take particular interest in this handsome coffee-table book that compiles an impressive gallery of stills within the context of his recollections of the filming. Four superb photographers - Mary Ellen Mark, Patrick Bard, Graciela Iturbide, and Miguel Rio Branco - are responsible for the vital, often seductive photos presented here, both production stills and behind-the-scenes shots. The combination gives a sense of the deep cultural immersion and the bold visual palette in capturing the lives in three distinct locales - Morocco, Tijuana and Tokyo. The result is comparable in quality to any National Geographic photography retrospective.
Iñárritu's perceptive writing effectively reflects off the images to paint the broad political and emotional landscape of the film, while coming back to the common ground of people who are unable to communicate in some finite way but somehow find a bond with one other. What is most striking is how the film's story seems to mirror much of what went on with the real people during the production. There are illuminating essays by novelist and poet Eliseo Alberto and Gonzalez Iñárritu included in the introduction. As he has already proven with his first two films, "Amores Perros" and "21 Grams", Iñárritu shows an intractable grasp of loss and grief in familiar settings. That he is able to address the same themes and make them resonate even more on a global plain in "Babel" is quite astonishing. Fortunately, this book is a powerful testament to his talent as an imagemaker.
Remembering the Intricacies of BABEL.......2006-11-12
When a motion picture of such impact as Alejandro González Iñárritu's BABEL is released, then books such as this fine one become additive to the experience. The four stories that are so integrated into the whole become a bit more individually understandable with the time it takes to perruse this photography book. Together with cogent remarks about both the technical aspects of making this film as well as anecdotal comments about the locations, the cast and the crew that add to the pleasure are some stunning photographs both form the film and extra images.
Still photographers Mary Ellen Mark, Patrick Bard, Graciela Iturbide, and Miguel Rio Branco add scenes from the film as well as images of the sets and creation of the film that make the experience live again. Yet as with the impact of the movie, the lasting impact of this addendum to the experience dwells in the mind after the covers are closed. BABEL is n important film: this book heightens the experience for those who have seen the movie and assists those who have yet to experience it. Grady Harp, November 06
Book Description
"The unconscious obsession that we photographers have is that wherever we go we want to find the theme that we carry inside ourselves."
Graciela Iturbide
Graciela Iturbide has found her inner theme photographing the Zapotec women of Juchitan and the Mixtec goat butchers of Oaxaca, in the company of Nobel laureates and world-renowned artists, among mourners at Mexican cemeteries and Indian death houses. Each image stands on its artistic own, but each also tells something about the fascinating artist who made it. In Eyes to Fly With, which includes both iconic images and previously unpublished work, Graciela Iturbide has assembled both a retrospective of her career and an introspective self-portraitin short, an artist's art book.
In the late 1960s, the great Mexican photographer Manuel Alvarez Bravo took Iturbide as his assistant. It was a fond and fruitful apprenticeship, but Iturbide eventually sought her own career because, as she says in a conversation with the writer Fabienne Bradu, "I had to have influences, but I also had to suppress them and achieve my own expression." This book pulls together Iturbide's most expressive work, including select self-portraits. Bradu's interview, which appears in both English and Spanish, reveals the stories behind classic images such as "Our Lady of the Iguanas." (Did she pose the iguanas on that woman's head, or was it photographic serendipity?) Bradu also draws out intimate reflections on photography, Mexico, M. A. Bravo, famous friends, indigenous mythology, death, and dreams, so that turning the page to a
viejo gazing at airborne gulls, it's impossible not to hear Iturbide's words, "One day... I dreamed a sentence over and over: 'In my country I will plant birds.'" Filled with such personal images and Iturbide's own voice,
Eyes to Fly With is the private tour of the artist's apartment that every admirer dreams of taking.
Customer Reviews:
A fine pick........2007-02-04
Graciela Iturbide photographs the Zapotec women of Juchitan and the Mixtee goat butchers of Oaxaca: EYES TO FLY WITH includes a range of black and white images, from previously unpublished works to those she's famous for, and this provides an outstanding monograph of her achievements. Each full-page photo is accompanied by either a quote from her explaining the photo's inspiration or a title line and date, while an article about her and interview with her provide foundations for reference for newcomers. Art library holdings, especially those strong in contemporary photography, will find it a fine pick.

Somehow some birds have flown.......2005-08-03
I am a little bit disappointed with this book. It is beautifully edited and beautifully printed as any book edited by twin palms is, let there be no doubt. One would only buy these books because they are so beautifully edited.
About half of the photographs really work. About the other half I have this feeling that these birds have flown. I have this feeling - but I could be wrong - that some of the photographs were sought to fill enough pages as to come to a complete body of work. I highly value the work by Graciela Iturbide : half of the pictures would have made a book twice as thin but really more than three times better. Anyway, for anyone who loves real photography I recommend this book.

Book Description
Between 1979 and 1988, the Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide (b. 1942) made a series of visits to Juchitan, Mexico, where, in her words, she photographed the way of life there "in complicity with the people." Located in the state of Oaxaca, Juchitan is an ancient, communal, matriarchal
society. It is also an open, fiercely independent, fiesta-loving city. Since the early twentieth century, the women of Juchitan--their dress and manner--have been national symbols, and Iturbide's photographs capture them in public and in private as they conduct their lives in this ancient city in
the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
The Women of Juchitan is published to accompany the exhibition The Goat's Dance: Photographs by Graciela Iturbide, which opens at the J. Paul Getty Museum on December 18, 2007.
