Watch Out!.......2002-02-01

If you are going to consider taking the stuff of this Title, tell the doctor that suggests it that you know of at least one person who is covered in violently itching/painful rash and welts all over his back, ankles and upper arms four days after ceasing ingestion of this stuff, having only taken one pill a day for five days, with the rash still spreading as I write this.

Celebrex book not about Celebrex.......2000-09-13

I was very surprised to discover chapter after chapter that this book has little to say about Celebrex. Indeed, I began to query why this book was entitled such. It should have been entitled "Trite Questions and Answers on Arthritis". Basically, the book had constant questions and answers from the first page to the last, most of which were repetitive, not to mention very ordinary questions and answers that anyone could have written about. I could have written the book myself and I am not an author of books. It was almost embarassing. I kept thinking all the way through, how can the author write this, and get away with it? How is she not embarassed?! How did this deception ever get sold? And of course, I kept getting frustrated over the constant questions and answers that were so trite and trivial. For goodness sakes, one can find out more about Celebrex on the Internet for free! In fact, I have already gotten a lot of information on Celebrex from the Internet before buying this book. I actually bought the book because I thought I would even get more information. What a joke! Each chapter has about a two liner testimony from people who've used it and the rest is devoted to arthritis in general. Mention of other drugs and Vioxx seem to dominate the book as equally if not more than Celebrex. I can't understand how a book with a title Celebrex can sell when it is but touched upon in the book! If I could demand my money back I would! As it is, I can only warn the people who may think of buying it--DON'T. And to the author herself, if she reads these comments, please do your research and write about what your title says on your book and don't take the shortcut route of silly questions and answers throughout a whole book! I think the public deserves better than that. As it stands, I threw my money away and have come away with knowing nothing about Celebrex, which I was told the book was about!

This book chronicles the evidence for the chemopreventive and therapeutic effects of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors against virtually all forms of cancer and presents exciting new opportunities for the use of COX-2 blockade in its prevention and treatment. The authors elucidate the process by which COX-2 inhibitors interrupt prostaglandin biosynthesis and cancer development, examine the positive epidemiological effects of such NSAIDs as aspirin and ibuprofen on various cancers, and demonstrate through animal models that COX-2 inhibitors and NSAIDs inhibit a variety of malignant neoplasms in vivo. They also present genetic models confirming the critical role of COX-2 in carcinogenesis and discuss how its molecular biology modulates carcinogenesis. In addition, the authors review the clinical applications of selected NSAIDs that are immediately relevant to cancer prevention and control and outline the future prospects of COX-2 blocking agents.

NMR imaging of materials is a field of increasing importance. Fresh reading.......2006-08-06

After reading other reviews I have to defend Shannon Olson's writing and her character. Some reviewers thought Shanny, the main character, had no reason for being depressed. I did not know someone coming from a rich family with an education could not be depressed. I believe depression has no boundaries. Others thought it was difficult to follow. If I can't follow the story I usually blame myself not the author. I loved the great read that it was.

...or at the very least that she wasn't writing about me. My mom first read this book when I was in college - she told me about it and said it reminded her of me. I said, mom, I'm not in my late 20's. Ha - like that made a difference, and as years go by I identify even more. I LOVE this book, it is so honest and true, and funny and wonderful. This book has made me laigh so hard that I snorted and cry through half a box of tissues. I have this book earmarked, highlighted and underlined and won't even lend it to anyone - I'll just buy them one or make them go out and by it themselves, because my copy is precious. From her quirky, smart, but depressive self, to her adorable mother who, although wonderful, can drive her up the wall, to her ex-boyfriends and her dysfunctional realtionships, to her career and education which can be confusing and frustrating, to her ongoing depression, sometimes debilitating, and to her honest and slowly productive but snarky relationship with her therapist - this book is just the best. And that's a good place to begin.

Great Autobiographical Fiction.......2006-07-01

Shannon Olson's autobiographical novel is a sided-splitting yet tender story of a Gen X daughter who, a supposedly mature 30-year-old, returns home to live with mom and dad because she can't handle her finances, her job, her relationships, in fact most of her life, and who wants others "to take care of her" while she hides from life by living through the "Love Boat" or engaging in other distractions. Her relationship with her mother Flo is beautifully crafted, and reflects a dominating narcissistic mother figure who the daughter "Shanny" attempts to emulate, but usually fails. The book, broken into bite-sized snippets from Shanny's life, is a must-read for every Gen Xer, every parent of a Gen Xer or those who just want a very funny, very real story about human life, love and frailty.

This book is awesome and funny. She really relates to single and taken women. Her mother is a hoot, and really gives the book a lot of personality. If you read this book, you are going to want to read her following book
"Children of god go bowling"
She plays a great character in this book, and an even better one in the other book.

Encyclopedia of Shannon.......2006-02-18

When I went into the public library, I didn't expect to find such a hip, funny, familiar book. I really love how personal Shannon gets in this book. She's honest, funny, and has some very legitimate life struggles. Whether you are 18 or 38 you can appreciate what she has to say. I often laugh out loud because she is just that funny... or has a knack with wording her ideas. Anyways, get this book and you might be pleasantly surprised. Especially if you like authors like Amy Rosenthal. =]
