            Book Description

Irrigation is the supply of water to agricultural crops by artifical means, designed to permit farming in arid regions and to offset drought in semi-arid regions. Irrigation has long played a key role in feeding expanding populations and is expected to play a still greater role in the future. Inevitably, however, irrigation entails the addition of water-borne salts which accumulate and induce the self-destructive twin phenomena of water-logging and salination. Moreover, this often negatively affects adjacent lands and water resources.

Is irrigation sustainable, and if so, how and under what conditions? That is the question that has impelled the writing of this book, which attempts to select and organize the disparate facts into a unified exposition, combining physico-chemical, agronomic, environmental, and economic principles into practical recommendations.

Chapters include: The Nature of Salinity, Effects on Crops, Irrigation Water, Waterlogging and Drainage, Salinity Control, Early Warning Systems, Scaling up from the Field, and a Conclusion which addresses directly the question of whether or not irrigation is sustainable. An appendix covers the economic aspects of salinity management.

                    Description:
Irrigation has long played a key role in feeding the expanding world population and is expected to play a still greater role in the future. As supplies of good-quality irrigation water are expected to decrease in several regions due to increased municipal-industrial-agricultural competition, available freshwater supplies need to be used more efficiently. In addition, reliance on the use and reuse of saline and/or sodic drainage waters, generated by irrigated agriculture, seems inevitable for irrigation. The same applies to salt-affected soils, which occupy more than 20% of the irrigated lands, and warrant attention for efficient, inexpensive and environmentally acceptable management. Technologically and from a management perspective, a couple of strategies have shown the potential to improve crop production under irrigated agriculture while minimizing the adverse environmental impacts. The first strategy, vegetative bioremediation-a plant-assisted reclamation approach-relies on growing appropriate plant species that can tolerate ambient soil salinity and sodicity levels during reclamation of salt-affected soils. A variety of plant species of agricultural significance have been found to be effective in sustainable reclamation of calcareous and moderately sodic and saline-sodic soils. The second strategy fosters dedicating soils to crop production systems where saline and/or sodic waters predominate and their disposal options are limited. Production systems based on salt-tolerant plant species using drainage waters may be sustainable with the potential of transforming such waters from an environmental burden into an economic asset. Such a strategy would encourage the disposal of drainage waters within the irrigated regions where they are generated rather than exporting these waters to other regions via discharge into main irrigation canals, local streams, or rivers. Being economically and environmentally sustainable, these strategies could be the key to future agricultural and economic growth and social wealth in regions where salt-affected soils exist and/or where saline-sodic drainage waters are generated.

                          Book Description

This research report contains results obtained by the authors in recent years in the research area of dynamic fracture mechanics and wave propagation in damaged solids. It deals with several topics on wave propagation in elastic solids with cracks.

Coverage includes wave scattering problems by a single crack, a periodic array of collinear cracks in isotropic and transversely isotropic elastic solids, interface cracks with a periodic spacing, and randomly distributed micro-cracks.

The authors present a non-hypersingular boundary integral equation method to treat single-crack wave scattering problems, both in time- and frequency-domain. Numerical examples are given to show the accuracy and efficiency of the method.

                          Book Description

Cracks and Fracture consists of nine chapters in logical sequence. In two introductory chapters, physical processes in the vicinity of the crack edge are discussed and the fracture process is described. Chapter 3 develops general basic concepts and relations in crack mechanics, such as path independent integrals, stress intensity factors and energy flux into the crack edge region. Chapters 4-7 deal with elastostatic cracks, stationary or slowly moving elastic-plastic cracks, elastodynamic crack mechanics and elastoplastic aspects of fracture, including dynamic fracture mechanics. Appendices include general formulae, the basic theory of analytic functions, introduction to Laplace and Hankel transforms and description of certain basic relations, for instance for stress waves in solids. There is an extensive bibliography, containing references to both classical and recent work, and a comprehensive index.

Even though this book is primarily intended for researchers and grad students, it leaves very little of the topic of fracture mechanics untouched. All the way from calculating relatively simple K factors to the intricate J- and P- Integrals, the book provides the equations that are needed for almost any research project, especially in the Elastic-Plastic region.

It addresses 'arrays of cracks', which is quite unusual, as well as other fairly rare geometric crack situations that are rather difficult to find in the literature.

One other interesting thing to note is the substantial amount of material devoted to the treatment of Mode II and Mode III cracks, not found in many other texts since Mode I is the predominate crack propogation mode in industry.

I would highly recommend it for any researcher in the field, but generally not recommend it for general practice limited to LEFM (Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics).

                            Book Description

STP 1343 features 28 peer-reviewed papers addressing development in fatigue crack growth (FTG) and fatigue life management. Worldwide leaders in the field provide their latest findings in five major areas:

Fundamental Studies -- answers basic questions about plasticity-induced crack closure and the adequacy of closure concepts in a wide range of growth behaviors.

Experimental Characterization of Closure -- examines one of the most active topics in closure studies. Included are experimental methods of measuring and analyzing crack opening levels and the correct way to incorporate closure information into the effective value of the stress intensity factor range.

Load History Effects -- addresses perhaps the most useful application of the crack closure concept, which has been to develop life prediction methods accounting for retardation and acceleration effects under variable-amplitude and spectrum loading methods.

Surface Roughness Effects -- explores how roughness interacts with plasticity-induced closure to affect crack growth rates. Several authors address this issue by developing models that include both effects.

Closure Effects on Crack Behavior -- investigates how fatigue crack closure, as an intrinsic feature of growing fatigue cracks, can have an influence on many different aspects of crack growth.

Organized according to the particular class of closure and including a variety of both experimental and analytical/numerical techniques, STP 1343 is an invaluable resource for all FTG experts.

                                    Book Description

The last two decades have seen considerable changes in the way fractures, including dynamic fractures, have been analysed. Conventional fracture mechanics approaches have slowly given way to more sophisticated and predictive ones including cohesive zone or traction-separation models. Popular for their simplicity and the ease with which they can be implemented into numerical codes, these need to prescribe the tractions holding the fracturing surfaces against the separation distance between them. It was thought that the main parameter of the model was the area under the traction-separation curve corresponding to fracture energy, while the shape of the curve would be of minor importance. However, as attempts were made to model complex problems it also became clear that the entire shape of the curve is often very important. Furthermore, the traction-separation laws were found to depend on constraint conditions apart from rate and temperature. The most important question for the fracture community pursuing the use of cohesive zone models should be how to obtain these laws.

Covering various aspects of dynamic fractures this book contains state-of-the-art contributions from leading scientists in the field of crack dynamics.

                                      Book Description

This book provides an up-to-date knowledge on theory and experimental results of rate-dependent fracture processes in metallic materials. The objective is to expose the current status of a growing branch of fracture mechanics called generally "Dynamic Fracture". Crack dynamics takes into account not only the effects of inertia but also rate sensitivity of a material under consideration. This volume has been prepared by four leading authorities in fracture dynamics: D.R. Curran, J.F. Kalthoff, J.R. Klepaczko and F. Nilsson. A broad range of problem is covered: dynamic fracture theory, application of dynamic fracture mechanics, dynamic crack inition and microstatistical fracture mechanics in dynamic fracture. The book in its present format may serve as a text supplement in lecturing on fracture mechanics. On the other hand, it may serve as an instructional aid in engineering of fracture prevention.

                                        Book Description

This book presents the Boundary Element Methods used for the analysis of crack growth in concrete structures. The analysis is based on the Dual Boundary Element Methods (DBEM) to represent cracks in concrete, and the Fictitious Crack Model (FCM) to represent the fracture process zone in concrete. The FCM in conjunction with the DBEM allows the simulation of crack growth within concrete in a straightforward manner. The advantage of this method is that for every crack extension increment, no remeshing is required and the crack increment direction is computed.

                                          She's a bona fide man-eater.

As a successful publicist specializing in the food trade, Juliet Cooper has never had any trouble meeting men; she just doesn't want them hanging around her London flat on a Sunday, asking her how she feels about her mother (who, for the record, hails from hell). After four years of serial dating Juliet's suddenly realized that men -- like big lunches -- have a tendency to repeat on you. But what else is a girl to do?

                                          She's hungry for love.

Though Juliet secretly envies her friend Gillian's life -- The comfort and companionship of marriage? Lovely! -- Gillian said goodbye to her sex life when she said, "I do." And as much as Juliet likes sporting leather for her friend Mel's fetish parties, she's much too lazy to be a dominatrix. Fortunately, as Juliet masterminds the career of her new celebrity chef client Liam, who has the sex drive of a testosterone-crazed rhino, these friends are about to discover the truth about what women really want, and how sometimes -- against the odds -- they end up getting it.

While Lauren Henderson is a technically good writer, I couldn't really get into this book. It just seems like she was trying too hard to be edgy instead of actually being edgy. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's posing and posturing. Basically, if you strip away the coke use and the S&M clubs from the book, this is just another Bridget Jones book. Oh, and the main character is a publicist. How typical.

Two stars for the book not being sloppily written.

I had read "Don't even think about it" first and I really liked it so I though that I would pick up "My Lurid Past". I was slightly dissapointed. The story seemed to drag on and it never fully captivated my attention like "Don't even think about it" did. I didn't paticularly care for some of the characters in the story, like Gill and Mel and even Juliet at times. I did like the character of Alex though and the romance story with him. So it wasn't the best book but I'm sure that it's great for fans of British chick-lit and Lauren Henderson fans.

3 out of 5 stars Fun chick lit.......2005-09-11

This is fairy standard issue Chick Lit -- the one difference is that it's British. The book was certainly entertaining and funny and I was able to live vicariously through Juliet for a while, but nothing really stood out about this book. It's another book that you'd want to read at the beach or by the pool, but not when you're in the mood for some serious reading.

I loved this book; it covered my two favorite hobbies -- men and food! You have to read it; it's funny and charming but it also makes you think! Lauren Henderson is truly brilliant!
