Book Description
The field of spatial hearing has exploded in the decade or so since Jens Blauert's classic work on acoustics was first published in English. This revised edition adds a new chapter that describes developments in such areas as auditory virtual reality (an important field of application that is based mainly on the physics of spatial hearing), binaural technology (modeling speech enhancement by binaural hearing), and spatial sound-field mapping. The chapter also includes recent research on the precedence effect that provides clear experimental evidence that cognition plays a significant role in spatial hearing.
The remaining four chapters in this comprehensive reference cover auditory research procedures and psychometric methods, spatial hearing with one sound source, spatial hearing with multiple sound sources and in enclosed spaces, and progress and trends from 1972 (the first German edition) to 1983 (the first English edition) -- work that includes research on the physics of the external ear, and the application of signal processing theory to modeling the spatial hearing process. There is an extensive bibliography of more than 900 items.

Book Description
One of the challenges for computational intelligence and biometrics is to understand how people process and recognize faces and to develop automated and reliable face recognition systems. Biometrics has become the major component in the complex decision making process associated with security applications. The many challenges addressed for face detection and authentication include cluttered environments, occlusion and disguise, temporal changes, robust training and open set testing.
Reliable Face Recognition Methods seeks to comprehensively address the face recognition problem while gaining new insights from complementary fields of endeavor such as neurosciences, statistics, signal and image processing, computer vision, machine learning and data mining. This book examines the evolution of research surrounding the field to date, explores new directions, and offers specific guidance on the most promising venues for future research and development.
Customer Reviews:
much more work needed.......2006-12-29
The problem tackled by this book is buried deep in evolution. It is one of the most basic properties of an organism that it reliably recognise others of its species. For reproduction, if nothing else. Humans have the added twist that facial recognition is important, for the extra reasons that the face is usually hairless and has many expressive muscles.
But the way the mind does its analysis is still largely opaque. By contrast, most of the book's methods look at it via other approaches. Signal processing with many custom features specific to faces. The chapters show impressive current capabilities. However, they also readily indicate the limitations. And suggest possible future improvements.

Book Description
This volume presents a series of studies that expand laws, invariants, and principles of psychophysics beyond its classical domain of sensation. This book's goal is to demonstrate the extent of the domain of psychophysics, ranging from sensory processes, through sensory memory and short-term memory issues, to the interaction between sensation and action. The dynamics and timing of human performance are a further important issue within this extended framework of psychophysics: Given the similarity of the various cortical areas in terms of their neuroanatomical structure, it is an important question whether this similarity is paralleled by a similarity of processes. These issues are addressed by the contributions in the present volume using state-of-the-art research methods in behavioral research, psychophysiology, and mathematical modeling.
The book is divided into four sections. Part I presents contributions concerning the classical domain of psychophysical judgment. The next two parts are concernedwith elementary and higher-order processes and the concluding section deals with psychophysical models. The sections are introduced by guest editorials contributed by independent authors. These editorials present the authors' personals view on the respective section, providing an integrated account of the various contributions or highlighting their focus of interest among them. While also voicing their own and sometimes different point of view, they contribute to the process of discussion that makes science so exciting.
This volume should be of great interest to advanced students in neuroscience, cognitive science, psychology, neuropsychology, and related areas who seek to evaluate the range and power of psychological work today. Established scientists in those fields will also appreciate the variety of issues addressed within the same methodological framework and their multiple interconnections and stimulating "cross-talk."

Book Description
The plan for this volume emerged during the international Leipzig conference commemorating the centenary of the death of Gustav Fechner. The contributors suggested that while many features of modern psychological theory were anticipated by Fechner, many new theoretical approaches owe much more to him than often is realized. As such, they decided to honor Fechner by evaluating his own contribution to the founding of psychology and psychoanalysis, by deepening the foundations of psychological theories of consciousness, perception, and choice, and by using the analysis of time to create a new appreciation of constraints that bind mental processes together. br br Thus, this volume spans an extraordinary range of psychological topics, from hermeneutics to the time-quantum basis for mental processes, in a way that would both amaze and delight Fechner. Moreover, the international reach of his pioneering ideas can be seen from the current locations of the contributors. The span from Japan to the United States to Holland to Germany and to Israel provides a global measure of Fechner's scientific legacy. br

Book Description
Relational Psychophysics in Humans and Animals offers a comprehensive and integrated overview of the often fragmented field of psychophysics. It introduces key concepts in psychophysics and clearly summaries and illustrates the central issues through telling examples. It combines empirical research and theoretical approaches from general psychophysics, animal psychophysics and human-infant psychophysics, to create a systematic comparison of these three key areas.
Through out, Viktor Sarris makes a strong case for more comparative psychophysical research across different species and across different stages of development. He presents original research and examines frame-of-reference models, behavioural psychophysics, developmental psychophysics, perceptual-cognitive psychophysics and evolutionary perspectives, to create an integrated framework for the direction of new research.
The book will be an invaluable aid for researchers in the fields of perception and psychophysics.

Abstract:
Background: Regions in human frontal cortex may have modulatory top-down influences on retinotopic visual cortex, but to date neuroimaging methods have only been able to provide indirect evidence for such functional interactions between remote but interconnected brain regions. Here we combined transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with concurrent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), plus psychophysics, to show that stimulation of the right human frontal eye-field (FEF) produced a characteristic topographic pattern of activity changes in retinotopic visual areas V1-V4, with functional consequences for visual perception. Results: FEF TMS led to activity increases for retinotopic representations of the peripheral visual field, but to activity decreases for the central field, in areas V1-V4. These frontal influences on visual cortex occurred in a top-down manner, independently of visual input. TMS of a control site (vertex) did not elicit such visual modulations, and saccades, blinks, or pupil dilation could not account for our results. Finally, the effects of FEF TMS on activity in retinotopic visual cortex led to a behavioral prediction that we confirmed psychophysically by showing that TMS of the frontal site (again compared with vertex) enhanced perceived contrast for peripheral relative to central visual stimuli. Conclusions: Our results provide causal evidence that circuits originating in the human FEF can modulate activity in retinotopic visual cortex, in a manner that differentiates the central and peripheral visual field, with functional consequences for perception. More generally, our study illustrates how the new approach of concurrent TMS-fMRI can now reveal causal interactions between remote but interconnected areas of the human brain.

Book Description
This volume is concerned with the analysis and interpretation of multivariate measurements commonly found in the mineral and metallurgical industries, with the emphasis on the use of neural networks.
The book is primarily aimed at the practicing metallurgist or process engineer, and a considerable part of it is of necessity devoted to the basic theory which is introduced as briefly as possible within the large scope of the field. Also, although the book focuses on neural networks, they cannot be divorced from their statistical framework and this is discussed in length. The book is therefore a blend of basic theory and some of the most recent advances in the practical application of neural networks.

Book Description
The problem of evaluating Feynman integrals over loop momenta has existed from the early days of perturbative quantum field theory.
Although a great variety of methods for evaluating Feynman integrals has been developed over a span of more than fifty years, this book is a first attempt to summarize them.
Evaluating Feynman Integrals characterizes the most powerful methods, in particular those used for recent, quite sophisticated calculations, and then illustrates them with numerous examples, starting from very simple ones and progressing to nontrivial examples.

"Roger wore his collar of golden Yorkist suns to show that he was one of the King's knights, ludicrous piked shoes to show that he was fashionable, and a massive codpiece to show that he had a vivid imagination." Alianore Audley is a good, submissive, demure woman of the fifteenth century . and if you believe that, you'll believe anything. But she is a spy in Edward IV's intelligence service, and the author of a chronicle that casts - well, a new light, let's say, on the times of the Yorkist kings. History will never be the same after Alianore. Nor will most other novels. Brian Wainwright's debut novel The Adventures of Alianore Audley is a brilliantly funny, subversive spoof. A wonderful romp set in 15th-century England. Told with zest, a deep love and knowledge of the period . a wicked sense of humour and plenty of tongue in cheek . Wainwright deserves far greater recognition . Elizabeth Chadwick's Top 10 Historical Novels, The Guardian
Customer Reviews:
Historical Fiction Lite.......2007-08-23
I read this book based on Elizabeth Chadwick's glowing review of it in her list of 10 favorite works of historial fiction. Chadwick's opinion bears weight with me as she herself is an accomplished author in that genre. Her thumb's up vote was bolstered by the wild cheering from other reviewers on this site. Just goes to show that one man's hilarious is another man's ho-hum.
The narrator is a wise-cracking "damosel" whose snide observations pertaining to the life and times of England during the Wars of the Roses form the basis of the book. I realize this is intended to be a send up of "straight" historical fiction and, being pretty well familiar with the England of this period, I think I "get" a good many of the jokes. Although light-hearted, this book is a far cry from a hilarity-filled, rib-tickling rolliker I was expecting based on the knee-slapping, guffawing glee expressed by others. Smart-alecky in a wink wink, nudge nudge kind of way, it is far from the laugh-a-page I was anticipating. I felt grateful for the few puny yuks Alianore's japes did afford.
I'll credit Wainwright with originality, but this book was quickly read and quickly forgotten. Witty, yes. If you expect more, I fear you will be disappointed, as I was. By way of an aside, it has been my experience that readers of these reviews seem to like other reviews which support their own opinions and dislike differing viewpoints. I fully expect this review to be widely deemed "unhelpful" being an unpopular vote in an otherwise adoring "fan base." I only wish someone else had earlier risked offering an opinion that this book is maybe not so 5-star funny after all.
Campy tale of a sassy spy - great fun for history buffs!.......2007-07-01
I envision Brian Wainwright as a complete history geek who had a blast writing this brilliant book to entertain other complete history geeks. He has done a marvelous job! Brush up on your English Monarchy history from the Wars of the Roses and the Tudors, and keep today's political themes in mind as well, and then dive in to this hilarious "mockumentary" style book.
Alianore Audley is a smart & sassy 15th century wench who is distant kin to the Plantagenets. Her bumbling idiot older brothers do little to look to her welfare, so she relies on her own wiles and is rewarded when they are noticed by King Edward IV. After turning down his first award proposal, she accepts his offer to spy for his government and soon finds herself at the helm of a Middle-aged CIA. She encounters danger, trumps evil, finds love, reluctantly (cough, cough) has sex, and all the while manages to keep her files on various court figures and plotters in meticulous order.
Wainwright's spoof-tale is full of constant sarcasm and history-laden zingers (ie: "You ain't just whistling Greensleeves!"). Alianore's adventures are wonderfully entertaining - the comparison to Mel Brooks by another reviewer is right on target! Alianore is hysterical - this book is great fun and highly recommended, even if you aren't a total history geek. Her sarcasm and the comparisons to more modern politics are obvious to all!
What Fun!.......2006-12-11
What a hysterical send up of historical fiction. Mel Brooks couldn't have done better. I was laughing through every page, the author's toungue must have been firmly planted in his cheek the entire time. Hard to believe this is the same person who wrote the ever so serious (and brilliant!) Within the Fetterlock.
However, I would recommend that you have a passing knowledge of the Wars of the Roses, Edward the IV and Richard the III. Otherwise, you'll miss most of the jokes.
Highly recommended and a breath of fresh air from so many serious works of fiction.
Hilarious, brilliant!.......2006-11-18
I can't adequately describe how much I loved this book. Not only is it absolutely hilarious, it's also very clever and extremely well-researched, and full of intentional anachronisms which are laugh-out-loud funny. Just a couple of examples: the duke of Gloucester browsing the 'Used Destriers' section of the court newspaper, and Alianore Audley informing Edward IV of his approval ratings. It's also very sympathetic to Richard III, and tells the reader what REALLY happened to the princes in the Tower....
Highly recommended!
Hilarious - A laugh on every page.......2006-09-01
A well-mixed blend of raucous wit and intelligent writing,'The Adventures of Alianore Audley' is a laugh out loud, clutch your gut, yarn set in 15th century England.
While chronicling her life, Alianore Audley, a fast-thinking, smart-mouthed, medieval dame, sets down her hilarious escapades working as a spy for Kings Edward IV, and Richard III.
Her 'medieval-feminist' mind set and sarcastic tongue snare her in numerous misadventures, which keeps the narrative flowing and the pages turning.
I throughly enjoyed this quick read, which at times, left me breathless from laughter. Kudos to a brilliant author!
