    Book Description

Mast cells and basophils are responsible for inflammatory and allergic reactions. As such, the signals that generate these responses and how their pathways of action work are the focus of much present day research into allergy and inflammation. This book focuses primarily on the molecular mechanisms that govern mast cell and basophil cell biology and function, as well as providing a comprehensive summary of the field of signal transduction and also giving insights into areas that have therapeutic potential. The book provides detailed insights into mast cell and basophil growth and development, their activation by allergens, including details of receptor activation and downstream events, and the regulators of morphology and degranulation. The metabolic pathways involved in prostaglandin and leukotriene production are discussed as is the role of transcription factors in mast cell growth and cytokine production. Written by leaders in the field, this volume will provide the reader with an up-to-date account of a topic where the rapid progress makes conventional information gathering difficult.

      5 out of 5 stars Good Start.......1999-12-17

This book is excellent for the person new to the concepts and applications of FTIR spectroscopy. Smith uses clear and concise language that is easy to interpret. Other books about the same subject are very difficult to read, and the language is too technical. This book provides an excellent base to build your knowledge of the subject on. Hats off to Dr. Smith - his book has helped me a lot.

1 out of 5 stars Do not throw away your money!.......1998-08-25

This book use very simplistic explanation of FTIR Spectroscopy. It is oriented on non-technical person with no background in physics. At the same time the terminology used requires that background. Result: confusion and disappointment. Not to mistake an honorable reader, the word "Fundamentals" in the title should be replaced with something like " Introduction.... for technicians".

4 out of 5 stars Mathematically Intense, but Useful.......2002-08-20

This book contains a full blown theoretical treatment of how Fourier Transforms are used in spectroscopy. No punches are pulled, its all math, all the time. However, this is not necessarily bad. There has been a crying need in this field for someone to give the full theoretical treatment to this topic, and now it has been done. What I found most useful is that concepts that I understood to be true I now know to be true because the proofs are in this book. Also, despite the math, the authors try to make the book as readable and relevant as possible.
This book is not for beginners, but for anyone with some background in math and spectroscopy, it is good reading. This book is a must have reference for anyone who is serious about FTIR.

          Book Description

The primary purpose of this book is to help you understand what is going on in Fourier Transform (FT) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Modern life is now very largely life with "black boxes" that carry warning labels: "No user-serviceable parts inside." Many find black boxes to be quite acceptable, at least as long as they work. But how willing should we be to accept black-box analyses without some understanding of how those analyses were obtained? NMR spectrometers are like "black boxes" in that they offer many standardized procedures, but it can be dangerous to the quality of your data if you rely slavishly on such procedures without understanding how and why the proper parameter choices are critical. The scope of this book is broad rather than deep with the intention of providing helpful insight. Much can be understood in a more qualitative way and that is the approach taken here. For those few areas where a quantitative approach is needed, ! simple mathematics will usually suffice.

This book has been used as a text for "Basic FT-NMR Spectroscopy" at the California Institute of Technology for the last ten years.

          5 out of 5 stars NMR from a master.......2005-08-13

Jack Roberts (Caltech) is one of the pioneers of the use of NMR in Organic Chemistry. In his memoirs, published by the American Chemical Society, he fondly recalled his initiation and rise in the field. Now in this book, which is a labour of love, one can see that fondness for NMR translated into action. Very few books on NMR (and there are almost hundreds of them) have such an authoritarian and clear, yet informal and engaging tone of presentation. Using the right kind of language at the right time, Roberts guides the reader through the thicket of methods, principles, techniques, and caveats, that make NMR the most important method for structure determination and much more, in Chemistry. The first few chapters are really outstanding, giving the reader a penetrating but simplified insight into the basic workings of magnetic resonance. In later chapters, advanced topics and 2D methods are tackled with the same kind of gusto and determination. Throughout the book, the focus is chemical, as it's the chemist who has always been the greatest beneficiary of this technique. Problems at the end of every chapter illuminate concepts, and ballpark estimates of parameters present a comprehensive picture of every technique and process. My only gripe, if any, is that I would probably prefer other books (Claridge, Derome, Lambert) for more detailed discussions of NOE and NOESY.
Roberts's book is one of the few NMR books that will completely do the job of teaching the basics of NMR to interested students and scientists. And it's worth it. After all, he is a master.

Fourier Series and Optical Transform Techniques in Contemporary Optics

              An Introduction

For anyone new to Fourier methods, this remarkable book will illuminate the subject like no other currently available. With over 280 illustrations generated by computer graphics, it depicts in 3-space (rather than the usual 2-space) the many basic functions of optical diffraction and imaging. These mind-stretching visualizations give the reader an enhanced understanding of both Fourier transform techniques and key principles in optics. At the same time, the author provides a lucid text that covers wave notation, the Fourier analysis of signals, the processing of light in diffraction phenomena and imaging, Zernicke polynomials, Fourier transforms for Fresnel diffraction, laser beacon adaptive optics, and related topics.

Ideal for self-teaching, this book is highly recommended for working engineers, technical staff, students of physical optics and signal analysis, and Fourier novices in all fields.

                    Book Description

In the current climate of increasing complexity and functional integration in all areas of engineering and technology, stability and control are becoming essential ingredients of engineering knowledge. Many of today’s products contain multiple engineering technologies, and what were once simple mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic products now contain integrated electronics and sensors. Control theory reduces these widely varied technical components into their important dynamic characteristics, expressed as transfer functions, from which the subtleties of dynamic behaviours can be analyzed and understood.

Stability and Control of Aircraft Systems is an easy-to-read and understand text that describes control theory using minimal mathematics. It focuses on simple rules, tools and methods for the analysis and testing of feedback control systems using real systems engineering design and development examples.

Stability and Control of Aircraft Systems provides both the seasoned engineer and the graduate with the know-how necessary to minimize problems with fielded systems in the area of operational performance.

                      Book Description

The present book deals with the issues of stability of Motion which most often are encountered in the analysis of scientific and technical problems. There are many comprehensive monographs on the theory of stability of motion, with each one devoted to a separate complicated issue of the theory. The main advantage of this book, however, is its simple yet simultaneous rigorous presentation of the concepts of the theory, which often are presented in the context of applied problems with detailed examples demonstrating effective methods of solving practical problems.

                          Book Description

This book examines qualitative methods for nonlinear differential equations, bifurcation theory and chaos in terms suitable for advanced undergraduate and first-year postgraduate students in mathematics and physics. Starting from the idea of phase space, the structure of solutions near hyperbolic stationary points and periodic orbits in investigated. Then, after a brief discussion of perturbation methods and nonlinear oscillators, the theory of nonhyperbolic stationary points, bifurcations and chaos is described.

                                Book Description

Hamiltonian fluid dynamics and stability theory work hand-in-hand in a variety of engineering, physics, and physical science fields. Until now, however, no single reference addressed and provided background in both of these closely linked subjects. Introduction to Hamiltonian Fluid Dynamics and Stability Theory does just that-offers a comprehensive introduction to Hamiltonian fluid dynamics and describes aspects of hydrodynamic stability theory within the context of the Hamiltonian formalism. The author uses the example of the nonlinear pendulum-giving a thorough linear and nonlinear stability analysis of its equilibrium solutions-to introduce many of the ideas associated with the mathematical argument required in infinite dimensional Hamiltonian theory needed for fluid mechanics. He examines Andrews' Theorem, derives and develops the Charney-Hasegawa-Mima (CMH) equation, presents an account of the Hamiltonian structure of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, and discusses the stability theory associated with the KdV soliton. The book's tutorial approach and plentiful exercises combine with its thorough presentations of both subjects to make Introduction to Hamiltonian Fluid Dynamics and Stability Theory an ideal reference, self-study text, and upper level course book.

                                      Book Description

Part voyeur, part dreamer, Nina Shepard, a Manhattan dog walker, has been around the block, so to speak, a few times and yearns to find that something -- or someone -- she can be passionate about. She may not have a boyfriend or a real purpose in life, but she does have a job that offers her one great opportunity: the keys to her clients' apartments. And with these keys, Nina has the freedom to cross several foyers -- and a moral boundary -- and gain access to their lives...where she just might find the things that are missing in her own.

Enter Daniel, a man she thinks she knows from snooping far past his doorway when she comes to pick up Sid, his Weimaraner. Except for owning a designer dog (rather than a stray from the pound), he seems perfect in every way. Now if only she could meet him.

For anyone else that might seem simple, but for Nina life is complicated. Claire, her best friend, is an actress who loses every audition due to nervous sweats. Bono, a sullen and sarcastic eight-year-old, is neglected by his U2 groupie mom, one of Nina's clients. Mrs. Chandler, her eccentric neighbor, would rather discuss Barry Bonds than why the IRS is hounding her. And Isaiah, Nina's ex-con dog-walking colleague, champions the rights of pit bulls. And, of course, there are the dogs themselves: Wallis and Edward, the spoiled dachsunds; Che, the stone-deaf beagle; Safire, the bulldog who stares at walls; and Nina's own beloved mutt Sam.

But it is Daniel who holds the key to Nina's heart. One moonlit night on a pier overlooking the Hudson River they are pulled into the treacherous waters of love. What she doesn't know is that Daniel is an imposter, pretending to be what he is not. And by the time she learns who he really is, after mishaps and mistaken identities, deception and lost dogs, it's too late. She's fallen for someone she never would have expected.

The Dog Walker is the hilarious and heartwarming story about one woman's quest for fulfillment. It is about city life -- any city, all cities -- and the struggle to make real connections. It is about allowing oneself to love fully while being fully oneself. And finally, it is about life itself: unpredictable, joyful, and not to be missed.

                                      1 out of 5 stars Garbage.......2007-05-08

I'm only on page 33 of this book, but I'm pretty sure I'm not going to finish it.

First page - she's taking a bath in a total stranger's bathtub. A stranger who is a client. Through whose stuff she routinely snoops.

                                      Give me a break.

The entire premise of the book is utterly cliched.

I hope this author re-thinks her career.

1 out of 5 stars nothing good... read something else... anything.......2006-11-05

I am afraid this book is a complete waste of time. It is a compilation of the Internet-based opinions, the plot is based on the improbable assumption (a thirty-something dog-walker with the fantasies of a teenager??) and is very predictable. Maybe this book has a target, although I am not sure who exactly would that be.
So, if you are not bored or have any other book at hand, don't start...

Nina Shepard is a single woman who has recently left a dead-end job in publishing and is earning money by walking dogs through the city streets. Being a dog walker allows her entrance into the private lives of some of Manhattan's most interesting characters. Nina isn't afraid to snoop or pry, but she is afraid to fall in love. Which is exactly what she does with Daniel Maguire, a 32-year-old high-powered attorney. Daniel however isn't exactly what he seems --- or who he seems, for that matter. Nina has to navigate her way through the crazy streets of New York, the crazy lives of the strangers whose apartments she escapes into, and the crazy personalities of the people in her life.

Leslie Schnur, the former editor-in-chief of Delacorte Press, understands how to make characters come alive on the page. She has created a hilariously touching debut novel that is impossible to put down. It is a tribute to anyone who has ever lived among the complexities of a city or found themselves slightly lost in the day-to-day complications of life. Nina Shepard is one of the most likable characters to come across modern fiction today. THE DOG WALKER is a must-read!

What a waste of time! This story seems to have been written for a made for TV or Sandra Bullock movie. What makes me the most upset is I wasted 24 dollars to buy the book. Pure fluff.
