Book Description
The rapidly evolving field of protein science has now come to realize the ubiquity and importance of protein-protein interactions. It had been known for some time that proteins may interact with each other to form functional complexes, but it was thought to be the property of only a handful of key proteins. However, with the advent of high throughput proteomics to monitor protein-protein interactions at an organism level, we can now safely state that protein-protein interactions are the norm and not the exception. Thus, protein function must be understood in the larger context of the various binding complexes that each protein may form with interacting partners at a given time in the life cycle of a cell. Proteins are now seen as forming sophisticated interaction networks subject to remarkable regulation. The study of these interaction networks and regulatory mechanism, which I would like to term "systems proteomics," is one of the thriving fields of proteomics. The bird-eye view that systems proteomics offers should not however mask the fact that proteins are each characterized by a unique set of physical and chemical properties. In other words, no protein looks and behaves like another. This complicates enormously the design of high-throughput proteomics methods. Unlike genes, which, by and large, display similar physico-chemical behaviors and thus can be easily used in a high throughput mode, proteins are not easily amenable to the same treatment. It is thus important to remind researchers active in the proteomics field the fundamental basis of protein chemistry. This book attempts to bridge the two extreme ends of protein science: on one end, systems proteomics, which describes, at a system level, the intricate connection network that proteins form in a cell, and on the other end, protein chemistry and biophysics, which describe the molecular properties of individual proteins and the structural and thermodynamic basis of their interactions within the network. Bridging the two ends of the spectrum is bioinformatics and computational chemistry. Large data sets created by systems proteomics need to be mined for meaningful information, methods need to be designed and implemented to improve experimental designs, extract signal over noise, and reject artifacts, and predictive methods need to be worked out and put to the test. Computational chemistry faces similar challenges. The prediction of binding thermodynamics of protein-protein interaction is still in its infancy. Proteins are large objects, and simplifying assumptions and shortcuts still need to be applied to make simulations manageable, and this despite exponential progress in computer technology. Finally, the study of proteins impacts directly on human health. It is an obvious statement to say that, for decades, enzymes, receptors, and key regulator proteins have been targeted for drug discovery. However, a recent and exciting development is the exploitation of our knowledge of protein-protein interaction for the design of new pharmaceuticals. This presents particular challenges because protein-protein interfaces are generally shallow and interactions are weak. However, progress is clearly being made and the book seeks to provide examples of successes in this area.

Book Description
Zutot: Perspectives on Jewish Culture aims to fill a gap that has become more and more conspicuous among the wealth of scholarly periodicals in the field of Jewish Studies. Whereas existing journals provide space to medium - and large sized articles, they neglect the small but poignant contributions, which may be as important as the extended, detailed study. The yearbook Zutot serves as a platform for small but incisive contributions, and provides them with a distinct context. The substance of these contributions is derived from larger perspectives and, though not always presented in an exhaustive way, will have an impact on contemporary discussions. Zutot covers Jewish Culture in its broadest sense, i.e. encompassing various academic disciplines - literature, languages and linguistics, philosophy, art, sociology, politics and history - and reflects binary oppositions such as religious and secular, high and low, written and oral, male and female culture.

Customer Reviews:
Great source of basic information on cholesterol........2007-08-31
This is the second copy that I have purchased for myself to lend to those I care about. This book is simple yet explains how to effectively lower ones cholesterol and improve their diet. It's a quick read for a short attention span without all of the medical terminology.
Good reference.......2007-05-29
Helpful in finding ways to lower cholesterol. I use it as a reference.
I don't know about this book..........2005-12-14
Just reading the description makes me wary. Chicory is a diuretic which it fine if you have a problem with edema but it could possibly cause dehydration if taken too often and not drinking enough water is a major cause of high cholesterol. Guacamole is made with avocadoes, Avocadoes contain high amounts of saturated fat, although it is vegetable based. I don't think it matters. Flaxseeds are waxy based seed. What do you think wax would do to you blood or even your digestive tract? What is actually in the seed itself is beneficial but extracting it would be costly and therefore unaffordable for most people.
If you like health information in little bits at a time..........2004-09-28
The editors of Prevention Magazine, along with medical advisor William Castelli, MD, of Framingham Study fame, have assembled a unique collection of information on lowering cholesterol. Actually, this book is about lots more than lowering cholesterol. The "chapters" run around 3-4 pages a piece, each one focusing on some nutritional supplement or food that provides some heart-healthy benefit.
The chapters on almonds, monounsaturated fat, pectin, flaxseed, and soy are among the most helpful. Information on health can often be confusing with pros and cons of various strategies reported in the media every day. The format of this book, with focused discussions on numerous foods and supplements delivered in bits and pieces, can make wading through the mountain of information more manageable.
If you'd like some information on heart-health without having to read a book cover to cover, but selectively for the parts you find most helpful, you'll get great use out of this book.
Too much outdated information........2003-04-19
For a book revised in 2002, there are several outdated errors or omissions. In the section about antioxidants, preliminary studies performed in 1993 were cited. Since that time, there have been several studies rebuffing the claims made in this book. The editors should have made more of an effort to keep up with new research findings. Also, the NCEP III Guidelines came out in May 2001, yet this book lists the classification of abnormal triglyceride levels from the 1996 NCEP II Guidelines. Personally, I was aware of the contents (and changes) of the NCEP III Guidelines by December 2000. Certainly the books' medical advisor, Dr. William Castelli, was aware of the changes in the NCEP Guidelines. The editors appear to have missed the boat on this issue.
The good points of the book are basic diet knowledge. Such as; fruits and vegetables are good, mono-unsaturated fats and fiber are good. Also, other sound advice like; smoking is bad and exercise is good. There are many good examples and explanations of beneficial dietary and lifestyle issues. However, the lack of current information and the almost conscience effort to steer people down a few dead end streets makes this book not worth the effort of reading. The bottom line: the book says 2002, but some of the information, or mis-information, is mid-1990's.

Nice Gift for Yourself and/or Someone You Love ..........2005-05-31
Just 1 of the "Ways to Feel Happier" is worth the price of book!
I ask these questions: of myself to get balanced; of others to be a good listener and inspire interesting conversation; and of negative people to help them find a broader perspective.
Four "ways to feel happier" questions, paraphrased:
1) What are you happy about in your life?
2) What's going well?
3) What are you excited about?
4) What are you looking forward to?

Inspiring, and with Gorgeous illustrations!!!.......2005-05-03
In these hectic days, this book is a nice and thoughtful respite. And the illustrations! One word...Wow!!!
Succinct, Inspiring with Beautiful Illustrations.......2005-03-18
I found "Better than Chocolate" an exceptionally inspiring book. It's so easy to read and 'digest'. The illustrations are really beautiful too.
The author, Siimon Reynolds, has obviously done a lot of research (and lists a pretty extensive recommended reading) to succinctly write the 50 or so tips.
By following even just a couple of the tips, to start with anyway, I genuinely found myself feeling happier. I particularly liked the "4 Magic Personality Traits" and "Focus on Happiness" tips best. If only I had had this book earlier! "Better than Chocolate" is filled with great ideas to help you feel happier.
This is a book you read and re-read.
I highly recommend it and it makes a fabulous gift too.
Customer Reviews:
Better than chocolate is an awesome reading.......2005-07-11
I Love the writing of Jennifer Labrecque. She captivates the reading with sensuality and laughs through the whole story.
In better than chocolate; two hot competitors are fitting for a vi-president position. Everything was under control until Eve ending meeting Jack "The ripper" at a hotel and everything gets hot as soon as they get into the elevator.
Hilarious story, definitely have to read it
From Back Cover.......2005-06-16
Marketing exec Eve Carmichael plays to win - in everything. So when she finds herself up against the notorious Jack LaRoux - known in corporate circles as Jack the Ripper - for a promotion, she's determined to do whatever it takes to come out on top.
But first she decides to psych herself up by indulging in a weekend of R and R...and a lot of chocolate. Only, once she meets the gorgeous guy by the pool, she decides a fling might be more to her taste. It's the perfect fantasy. No names, no promises, just one incredible night with a sexy stranger. Too bad the man in her bed is anything but a stranger...
fine boardroom romance .......2004-09-01
Top management at Hendley and Wells Advertising informs account execs Jack "The Ripper" LaRoux of the San Francisco office and Eve "The Avenger" Carmichael of the New York office that they are competing for a vice president position. The individual who gains the Bradley account wins the job. The employees of the two offices have placed Jack as 2-1 favorite because Bill Bradley prefers working with men and his firm manufactures farm equipment, considered by many to be a male dominated area.
Independently Jack and Eve leave on a Friday for Chicago so that they have a weekend of pampering before the gladiatorial contest begins on Monday. At the hotel that both are staying at they meet and share a heated evening together without knowing the identity of the other. Though both suspect the other once the games begin, they also fall in love. However, it seems as if this is a win-lose situation on the job and a lose-lose in their relationship.
This boardroom romance is an entertaining tale of two combatants falling in love with one another. When each of the antagonists realizes who they are attracted to they quickly distrust the other's motives and wonder how they could enjoy sleeping with the enemy. The final twist in this take no prisoners novel provides a delightful culmination to a fine tale in which these alpha personalities try to trump each other.

A collection of sweet dreams.......2004-09-09
THE ONLY THING BETTER THAN CHOCOLATE, by Janet Dailey, Sandra Steffen and Kylie Adams.
All 3 of these stories were completely different and all were interesting. My favorite was Sandra Steffen's, I KNOW I LOVE CHOCHOLATE. "Sam O'connor" is a man with a secret he intents to guard. Annie Valentine is a woman with amnesia and an insatiable taste for chocolate, an understandable desire to discover who she is, and a hankering for Sam O'Connor...
It was a great story that was fun to read, at times funny, and very satisfying...
Chocolate lovers this is right up your alley!!.......2003-03-20
While all the stories in this book are good, If you like Kyle Adams works her story in this book is a hoot! Its worth the read just for this one story. Not to mention the introduction of characters from other books. I gave this book four stars rather than 5 because while all the storys are good. They aren't great. I only found Kyle Adams story to be worth a bucket of laughs and to have that impossible little romantic twist for which we all read these books for.

Book Description
Hunting down his partner's killer and investigating a pair of seemingly unrelated murders, SF Police Inspector Noah Dane stumbles onto a conspiracy that threatens all humanity. Chastity Blume, a celebrated talk show host known as "America's Favorite Virgin" discovers the sinister plot while searching for the mother she never knew. Along with Noah's new crime-fighting partner-a Marilyn Monroe celebudroid-they lead a cast of quirky characters towards a climax of comically sexy proportions, where all the clues point to an insanely popular new virtual reality experience that's "Better Than Chocolate."
Customer Reviews:
GREAT SUMMER READ!.......2007-08-03
If you could cross Mickey Spillane and Robert Heinlein you'd probably get a book with something close to the quick witted, hard-hitting characters moving across its bizzaro future-scape.
The lead character, Noah Dane, fits the mold of the typical detective novel hero with enough of a Heinlein-esque quirkiness to make the whacky vision of the future seem not only plausible, but too comical not to be real. Dane moves through a technologically transformed San Francisco of a not too distant future that comes to life through what seemed like thousands of novel devices and fresh witticisms. It takes a few short, jam-packed chapters to set the stage, but once I was into the meat of the story it was hard not to want to know what mutant-street urchin or sexually charged android would appear next, and what they would do--to who.
From the whimsically well-fleshed dystopia to its endearingly comical showdown, this book is just what the title says it is. Every page demanded louder to be turned until the last one put me to bed with a smile on my face.
Adventure into the future.......2007-08-02
This book is truly a sexy satire using futuristic police procedures and robots to tell the story of Noah Dane. When Noah's partner is killed and the killer is the only one from the Blue Scoprs to escape his 50 caliber Desert Eagle XIX, Noah is hot on his trail. With his new partner, a robot that is a clone of Marilyn Monroe, he searches the mean streets of the San Francisco.
Bruce Golden's skill as a satirist, his imaginative depiction of the future in our law enforcement departments, and his vivid characters, intertwined with the everyday personal problems that the reader can relate to, makes for an entertaining tale.

3.5.......2005-10-07
I liked a lot of things about this book. It was well written, offered a unique storyline, and was, for the most part, fast-paced. I enjoyed it.
But around page 160 I was hoping for more than just more of the same. The bulk of the book is mostly Annie completing her To-Do List /Travel Schedule. Annie leading the family to the brink of disintigration due to her own greedy quest for more house and household stuff gave her the backbone of a worm. Her children were perfect in every way, including their grasp of not only English but French as well. Her husband a sexy/handsome, devoted, brilliant scientist. Even the dog was exactly right. So why was Annie so piggish?
Towards the end, I almost wanted this avaricious group-- or the grabby Annie at least-- to suffer some consequences, but they don't; Annie saves the day, and they ride off to a "better" life.
Thankfully, this time the Better Than Chocolate didn't have the typical magical powers to transform everyone into happy, amorous, lovesick fools. It's worth a read, and for the most part quite an enjoyable book.
Fabulous!.......2005-07-28
Great story with very engaging characters. Isn't there an Annie in all of us? I loved the exciting ending -- and love a smart woman.
Laugh out loud.......2005-06-01
If you are a working mom, you may think that you don't have the time to read this book- but you absolutely must. Waggoner's heroine is the new American hero: a middle class mom with smarts and moxie to spare. Annie juggles sudden fame, corporate America, a teen deemed "suspiciously well-adjusted" by his teachers, a four year old Francophile, and her own self-doubts with a driving wit that will make you laugh out loud. If you ever wished someone would invent a calorie-free chocolate bar better than the real thing, welcome to your fantasy. If you ever wished you could find an oasis amidst the chaos of modern motherhood, welcome to Better Than Chocolate, the book find of the summer!
A "Must Read".......2005-05-09
Everyone who has ever dreamed of hitting the jackpot should read this book. Very amusing and well written, this book is one of the best I've read in years. The characters are equally amusing - from the corporate executives to the zaney neighbors.
But you can enjoy both.......2005-04-27
I am planning to include a copy of Ms. Waggoner's rich and tasty first novel with each box of Godiva goodies I give in the years ahead. The reader can then can have both the movie-worthy story and some sweets in hand. During the read I felt I was meeting people I'd love to bite into. Getting a taste f the chocolate business might leave a slightly bitter taste and reveal some soft or even sour centers, but who can resist devouring yet another page after page? As for a delicious conversation starter, candy's dandy but candy *and* this story is better. I wouldn't be surprised if actors are already licking their lips, eager to play their part. This summer's beach party game will probably be "who will play who." It is better than chocolate alone.
Book Description
Chocoholics rejoice! This little book is dedicated to the 15 out of every ten of us who love chocolate. Theresa Cheung, one of those 15, was left wondering after a recent episode of utter cocoa indulgence, "What if I could devour life with the same commitment and passion with which I devour chocolate?" After much thought and a great deal of taste testing, this guide to a richer life was born.
Follow Cheung's seven silky smooth chocolate principles and your life will never be the same. Along the way she offers recipes, stories, and trivia--all about chocolate and improving your life. Did you know that dark chocolate fans tend to be forward thinking and optimistic? Or that the melting point of chocolate is just below our normal temperature, which is why it melts in our mouth? Or that Casanova drank chocolate daily and declared it the elixir of love?
Grab a bar (or five) of chocolate and settle in with this book. Better Than Sex will lead you to the creamy center of what's really good--in life, love, and food.
