            Book Description

Integrated Flow Modeling presents the formulation, development and application of an integrated flow simulator (IFLO). Integrated flow models make it possible to work directly with seismically generated data at any time during the life of the reservoir. An integrated flow model combines a traditional flow model with a petrophysical model. The text discusses properties of porous media within the context of multidisciplinary reservoir modeling, and presents the technical details needed to understand and apply the simulator to realistic problems. Exercises throughout the text direct the reader to software applications using IFLO input data sets and an executable version of IFLO provided with the text. The text-software combination provides the resources needed to convey both theoretical concepts and practical skills to geoscientists and engineers.

              Book Description

This Symposium, and these Proceedings, provided a forum for the latest thinking in analytical, computational and experimental modelling of structures interacting with fluid environments. A meaningful and lasting dialogue was facilitated between leading researchers in the different component disciplines. It is intended that, through these dialogues, multidisciplinary linkages will be establishes leading to integrated approaches to modelling the complex, nonlinear interactions between fluids and structures. Examples of classes of interactions that may be addressed in this Symposium include ocean structures, fluid conveying structures, and aerospace structures. The energy transfer processes are inherently nonlinear in all aspects of the behaviour. The important class of vortex-induced oscillations has regions of lock-in, where the structural natural frequencies rather than the fluid velocity govern the shedding, and there exists hysteretic behaviour.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A195963. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The problem of Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS) afflicts the Air Force and other armed services in a way unforeseen in the past. The costs of DMSMS manifest themselves both in terms of monetary expense and diminished mission readiness. The current environment of limited defense spending and high operations tempo exacerbates this problem. This thesis draws on available data from the electronics integrated circuit industry to attempt to assess whether statistical modeling offers a viable method for predicting the presence of DMSMS. The research identified logistic regression as a powerful tool for analysis of DMSMS and further developed twenty models attempting to identify the "best" way to model and predict DMSMS using logistic regression. The results indicated that DMSMS does not seem related to technical characteristics. However, design age proved to be statistically significant in modeling DMSMS presence. Another finding of this research indicates that integrated circuits designed for military use have extended longevity compared to commercial integrated circuits. The overall conclusion of this effort was that DMSMS can be predicted using the conditional probability output of logistic regression. Current databases do not provide easy access to the vital predictor, design age. Recommendations include further validation of the model and the inclusion of design age in electronics integrated circuit databases.

                  Description:
The objective of this paper is to develop anaerobic digestion models that integrate features from the kinetics of the process with those from flow (or hydraulic) behavior in modern anaerobic digesters. First, a detailed kinetic model based on the one described in Kalyuzhnyi [S.V. Kalyuzhnyi, Batch anaerobic digestion of glucose and its mathematical modeling. II. Description, verification and application of model, Bioresour. Technol. 59 (1997) 249-258] was modified to account the production of endogenous residue. The two digesters studied in this work are the UASB (upflow anaerobic sludge blanket) and the EGSB (expanded granular sludge bed) reactors. The flow models for those digesters have to take into account the different flow behaviors for the effluent and the sludge. The flow model for the UASB reactor was based on that of Bolle et al. [W.L. Bolle, J. van Breugel, G.C. van Eybergen, N.W.F. Kossen, W. van Gils, Kinetics of anaerobic purification of industrial wastewater, Biotechnol. Bioeng. 28 (1986) 542-548], which was generalized in this work to take into account the volume variations of the reactor sections in non-steady state. The model for the EGSB reactor was developed from the experimental results described in Brito and Melo [A.G. Brito, L.F. Melo, A simplified analysis of reaction and mass transfer in UASB and EGSB reactors, Environ. Technol. 18 (1997) 35-44]. With the kinetic and flow models, integrated models for anaerobic digestion in selected modern anaerobic digesters are developed and validated, and many simulations of these models under different scenarios are described. In particular, the anaerobic digestion in an UASB reactor simulation shows that the volume variations of the sections of this reactor proposed in this work are necessary to accurately describe the behavior of such digester in non-steady state.

                      Description:
Modeling transportation systems operations in large part involves an understanding of how physical entities (i.e., vehicles) move and interact with each other in the system. Transportation systems that are integrated with information technologies involve flow of information besides the flow of physical entities. In some cases, a unified modeling approach that considers both flows is needed to create an accurate model for system operations. This paper highlights the significance of such a modeling approach that involves an explicit representation of information flow attributes (e.g., response time and information delay). Several small-scale queuing models are developed to illustrate the importance of incorporating information flow related attributes into the models of transportation systems operations. In each example system, two scenarios are considered: modeling the given system with or without explicitly representing the information flow. Comparison of performance statistics is made between these two scenarios. It is found that ignoring information flows may lead to significant inaccuracies in the estimates of the system performance.

                                    Book Description

Two years in a Florida federal prison on bogus charges has made former Miami Dophins linebacker, Zack Chasteen, stir crazy. The first step toward getting his life back together is meeting up with his beautiful magazine mogul girlfriend, Barbara, on Harbor Island in the Bahamas. But making it out of Florida proves to be more trouble than a gator with a toothache--and even deadlier. Zack barely leaves the state alive before he discovers Barbara's been kidnapped and her ex-lover, a photographer, murdered.

Once again trouble has come knocking on Zack's door. But this time he's fighting back, with the help of a Royal Bahamanian police superintendent, his trusted mystical Taino Indian friend Boggy, and a cast of the most colorful characters ever to step into the warm Bahama sun.

As unpredictable as island trade winds, Bahamarama twists and turns its way to a stunning conclusion and announces the arrival of a writer who is sure to surprise and delight mystery fans for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Escape to Bahamarama.......2007-03-19

Easy reading, colourful exploits and backhanded informative style. Enjoyed the read and purchased more of Bob Morris' books. Currently reading "Jamaica Me Dead" another good read for anyone who has either visited or lived in "the islands." Morris is different in a querky way from Hiassen, White and Dorsey, but as we know every author can only continue to write interesting and attention grabbing material a the rate of one quality book per annum. As I consume books at the rate of at least one per week I need them to keep them coming.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this novel as I'm not only a mystery fan but a lifelong fan of the Bahamas. The characters are believable and Mr. Morris really captures the atmosphere of the Caribbean. If you don't have time or money to visit the Bahamas, you can vicariously experience it through Bahamarama and get a great story out of it as well. If you're a fan of Carl Hiaasen you will also enjoy this book.

I put Morris up on the shelf with Hiaasen, Dorsey, White and Corcoran. Welcome to the Florida club. I found the hero, ex-pro running back Zack, and his voodoo sidekick very entertaining, and can't wait to read more. The palm tree farm hang-out is just the right amount of pro-eco-Florida to make it poetic. Loved Jamaica Me Dead too. Put me down for advance purchase on next book.

First off, let me say this is a great fun read and once you begin you better be prepared to read, because you will get hooked. I finished this book in about two days and it made me want to read more by Bob Morris.

The story revolves around Zach Chasteen, an ex Football player for Miami, who found himself in jail after he was framed for a deal gone bad with some Latin drug lords. Zach is pretty hard bolied and down to earth and his only passions in life are his girlfriend and his boat. When his girlfriend winds up missing on a photo shoot in the Bahamas, Zach finds himself entangled in a game of cat and mouse with the kidnappers.

The plot is okay and perhaps like me, you'll be able to figure out the ending before it happens. However, the characters are so good you'll keep reading anyway. Take a vacation and enjoy this book.
