Book Description
Microarrays and Microplates title looks at the new microarray and microplate-based technologies which facilitate large-scale analysis of DNA sequence variants, mRNA molecules and proteins. The book provides a review of the various methodologies being used to identify genetic variants and gene regulation and guides readers through both the application of these methodologies and experimental procedures.
Book Description
This book is designed to serve as an introduction to the fascinating world of maps. It explains how to use maps to obtain information about a wide variety of topics. Throughout the book, maps are viewed in a broad framework. Thus, the discussion includes mental maps, aerial photographs, remotely sensed images, computer-assisted cartography, and geographical information systems, in addition to traditional printed maps. The writing style is neither formalistic nor casual, with an emphasis on clarity of explanation. The discussions assume that the reader has no specific prior knowledge of the topic, so that even novice map users can understand and use the information and techniques presented.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent course textbook.......2003-03-24
I received a copy of this book from the publisher when I was teaching a university course on cartography. The textbook for the semester had already been selected, so I used this book originally as a second resource while preparing lectures. By the end of the semester, I found myself using this book as the primary source for topics and explanations and suggested it be used in future semesters.
This book explains concepts such as projections and coordinate systems in ways that are easy to understand, particularly for new students. The explanations are thorough without bogging down in details. The figures are large, many take up a full page. They are helpful, relevant, and excellently reproduced. The chapters on terrain representation, contours, and topographic features are exceptionally good (there are almost 40 examples of terrain representation) The remote sensing and GIS chapters are brief and introductory, but those are topics best left for other books.
I was a little skeptical when I first saw this book, since it appeared to be a somewhat thin, and we were using Robinson's book, which is basically a standard. But, I would recommend this to any map student, teacher, or user. It packs a lot of information in its pages. I still use it as a reference (...).
Great Help.......2001-03-22
If I were stuck on a deserted Island like Tom Hanks in Cast Away, and I could only have one book, it would be this one. It would help me to get off the island and determine my global positioning! Lots of help.
A Cartographer's View of the World.......2000-10-02
When you've been working in a field for 30 years it's really difficult to drag yourself backwards and review data you already know, so when I signed up for a GPS (Global Positioning Sattelite) software course I looked at "Map Use & Analysis" by John Campbell as something I could just skip over, but since it was required reading I finally got it out. I was really pleased with the depth of material and the extremely clear explanations of all those mystifying cartography words. Anyone who has no idea about mapping or is a begining student will be able to use this book. The format is excellent with terms higligted and the index and dictionary are well coordinated. I feel that this book is such an excellent reference that I am buying a copy for myself. The only negative thing I have to say is that the illustrations, which are plentiful seem to wander several pages ahead of text, but they are carefully numbered and correspond exactly to the descriptions. Well done! Les L. Johnson

Book Description
Geodesy is the science that deals with the Earth's figure and the interrelationship of selected points on its surface. This is the only book on the market designed to provide readers with an introduction to geodesy without the usual emphasis on complex mathematics. Describes such positioning techniques as horizontal and vertical geodetic datums. Satellite geodesy, electromagnetic distance measurement, laser ranging and emerging technologies including the global positioning techniques and GIS are among the topics discussed. Features scores of two-color diagrams and examples to facilitate understanding.
Customer Reviews:
Good background for people interested in GIS and cartography.......2001-12-01
I bought this book to fill in knowledge gaps, not to learn geodesy as an expert. It answered lots of questions I had had about measurements, how surveys are performed, geodetic systems (datums and so on), the WGS, and the use of gravity. The details are all there, within about 100 pages in the middle of the book. Not bad at all.
This subject by its nature requires a mathematical treatment, so although the book does not go deeply into the math, it's sometimes heavy reading. Many of the illustrations deserve careful study, too. It's not light bedtime reading. I carried this book around for several days during and after a large GIS conference and periodically dipped into it. It works well in small doses.
Only partly successful in illuminating a tough subject........1999-09-07
Reading this book I got the feeling that Mr. Smith couldn't quite decide if his audience was the layman or the surveying professional. For example, very little mathematics is used (even though there are topics in the book which would have been better served by a more mathematical treatment), while on the other hand many terms are used as though the reader should be familiar with them already.
I found the lack of a glossary frustrating, as was Mr. Smith's habit of using concepts chapters ahead of their defintion. The difficult subject matter was further obscured by numerous errors in the figures and text (such as refering to velocity as the second integral of acceleration.)
In the end, the book did give me a good qualitative feel for the issues germane to geodesy, but I had to work very hard to extract that information and found myself immediately looking for a more perspicuous text.
An overall coverage of the history of modern geodesy.......1998-06-12
I found Mr. Smith's book to be very informative and well written. He covers many aspects of geodesy from early history to modern application. He is apparently very knowledgable and has a broad spectrum of experiences which he writes about. There are some instances when Mr. Smith tells a large amount of information, maybe more than the average reader would require. There are other times that I wished he would tell me more. He has a writing style that tends to skip around alot. Just hang in there and you will get the information in another chapter. There is always the bibliography for reference, if, Mr. Smith didn't cover it, which is rare indeed. He covers such obscure subjects such as: coriolis effect, isostasy and dynamic heights. Throughout the book all of the illustrations are simple yet understandable in almost all cases.

Book Description
The Practical Handbook of Digital Mapping Terms and Concepts offers easy-to-read, alphabetically cross-referenced terms, illustrated with maps (including 8 pages in full color) produced through digital mapping technology. Thorough explanations provide novices and experts alike with the most comprehensive study of its kind, drawing together terms and concepts from the business, academic, and development communities. One of the book's unique features is a practical introduction to digital mapping, explaining its original application in the international development community and the third world issue of guinea worm. This study is balanced by theoretical perspectives on digital mapping as well as possible directions for future exploration. Internally cross-referenced appendices cover topics often ignored in the conventional academic curriculum, but which are critical to success in other digital mapping arenas. These appendices discuss railroad terminology, desktop digital mapping (with French translation), maps on CD-ROM (with French translation), tools used in the global positioning system (with French translation), and Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems.

Book Description
This book completes the physical foundations and experimental techniques described in volume 1 with an updated review of the accessory equipment indispensable in molecular beam experiments. It extends the subject to cluster beams and beams of hyperthermal and subthermal energies. As in volume 1, a special effort is made to outline the physical foundations of the various experimental techniques. Hence this book is intended not only as a reference standard for researchers in the field, but also to bring the flavor of current molecular beam research to advanced undergraduates and graduate students and to enable them to gain a solid background in the field and its technique.
Book Description
A quirky and quick-witted girl moves to Manhattan and holds on for dear life.
Emily Hinton needs out. She comes from a small town in California where the church handbell choir concert passes for a decent way to spend a Saturday and she’s known all the boys since kindergarten. She dreams of sophisticated people, love, and Louis Vuitton. When she lands a job at the world-famous publishing house Morrow & Sons in New York, she knows that she is finally on her way. She packs her bags, says good-bye, and sets out for Manhattan, where she will fit in, even if it kills her.
In spite of her naïveté, she quickly becomes friends with the girls at work and begins to learn a thing or two about how things are done in Manhattan. She soon attracts the attention of the handsome Bennett and is swept into a whirlwind romance, but an overnight visit to his parents’ home at Thanksgiving and his seemingly idle flirtations with one of her colleagues give her second thoughts about what Bennett really wants. Her uncertainty about her feelings escalates when one of the hometown boys she left behind reappears in her life. Emily’s days at the office are also becoming complicated: an ambitious editor is breaking all the rules to publish a controversial book that demeans everything she believes in. Will she stand up for what she knows is right and risk losing it all?
Balancing her passion for the glamour of New York City with her determination to live by her morals turns out to be much more difficult than Emily ever imagined. Her roundabout quest for happiness will endear her to anyone who has ever dreamed of making it big, and faced more than a few pitfalls along the way.

Customer Reviews:
Misleading! and poorly written!.......2007-09-01
1) No where on the book did it identify itself as a religious book. I wanted a light hearted beach book, not to be preached at.
2) The characters are flat. They do not have their own personalities, motivations. There is no one in the book you like, or even hate. Yawn!
3) I'm from NY. New Yorkers are not like they are depicted in this book. We are not flat one-dimentional beings solely interested in sex, alcohol, clothes, and upward mobility. We are a varied group of people with a lot of diversity. I was offended by this characterization.
4) The main character is preachy and judgemental. I went to Catholic school as a child, this is not what I was taught Christiantiy was about.
5) This book was poorly written. At several times in the book the subject or speaker changed suddenly causing me to re-read sections to figure out what was going on.
I wanted a fun book, not a sermon. To top it off, it was poorly written. I only made it to page 107, as I felt bored and preached at. Judging by others reviews, I made the right decision.
One of these authors is pretty cool, the other's painful.......2007-08-07
This book seemed slightly schizophrenic to me, and I kept wondering if the two authors split up the writing duties "I'll take the first half, you take the second."
The first half was a fun, lighthearted chick-lit story with a refreshingly nice, grounded heroine. It's similar to a book I enjoyed much more by these two authors, "The Book of Jane."
In the second half, let the moralizing and judging begin. We get harangues (from her friend) about how Emily's "values" are wrong because she drinks alcohol and even eats out in restaurants! To her credit, Emily does at least disagree with that, but the friend still plays the role of her conscience. Then, after bragging about how non-judgmental she is, Emily sneers at a friend who is dating a bartender. ("Appalling standards," she calls them). She doesn't know anything about this girl, mind you, other than that she is a bartender, not an "amazing" girl like Emily herself. What a shallow little snob.
Emily also (reluctantly) allows her parents to call her boyfriend's parents to check on the sleeping arrangements when she goes to stay in the family home for Thanksgiving! This is a college graduate! My parents are about as conservative as it gets but no way would they be interfering like that. This is the point at which Emily begins to seem like pious 12-year-old.
It all implodes in a frenzy of clueless self-righteousness (and I'm a Christian, mind you) when Emily makes "the right decision" to suppress a book whose ideas she doesn't agree with. The answer to "bad ideas" is "more ideas" -- if you don't agree with something, present your argument as to why. But given the way Emily's desperate squelching of ideas is presented as heroic, the finale seemed downright fascist.
page 283 of this book sums this book up best..........2007-07-17
You've probably already read the reviews leading up to this one and realize that the book is about an aspiring editor who relocates to NYC to chase down her dreams. Good ole Emily...
I am now on page 283 of this book and had to laugh at the irony of a statement I found on this page. The authors write (about a book that the main character's company wants to publish), "The two women are basically conspiring to publish their personal, caustic opinions." I laughed out loud when I read that because that's exactly how I was feeling about this book as I was reading this statement. I can echo the sentiments of many others--the fact that it was Christian was not highlighted anywhere. I am a Christian and would definitely not mind reading about Christianity if it is a smartly written book. However, I do not like Christianity shoved in my face at an alarmingly escalating pace as I'm nearing the end of this book that I probably won't finish.
I believe that this book was used as a vehicle for the authors to spread the good word and get their beliefs in front of others. Nice thought. Not so nicely written. Christians are supposed to be non-judgmental. The main character judged everyone throughout the book and did not appear to have truly Christian beliefs. She was appalled that her love interest went on 2 dates with a bartender. What could be worse in this life?! C'mon gals, get over yourselves, you're not holier than thou...and if you think so, maybe you should read the Bible.
Not what I expected........2007-06-28
I really wish I had saved myself some money by not buying this book. I bought it at the bookstore, not on Amazon and so I had no idea it was a story about an uptight Christian girl who thinks she is too good for her friends, family and love interests. The back cover makes the story sound like it's full of fun and romance, "a whirlwind romance" to be exact, but it was far from it. The main character, Emily, had zero personality and had absolutely no chemistry with any of the other characters. What a boring book!
Light & Entertaining.......2007-03-20
I didn't realize this was Christian "Chick Lit" until I read the first chapter, but I found this to be a very fun, frothy read. I'm a Catholic Christian, so I found it interesting to read about those Christians who have a real problem drinking, etc. The fact that Emily drinks didn't bother me, although it seemed as though Emily started to drink way too much toward the end, and I can see why that bothers other readers. It just goes to show that being "Christian" doesn't mean you fit into a certain slot--there all kinds of us out there! I liked that Emily seemed to be a typical 20-something; she wasn't prudish or prissy. In all, I found this book to be typical chick lit--light and entertaining--without explicit sex. It was a fun, quickie read.

Book Description
A young woman heads to the city for her dream job as New York editor in this contemporary retelling of the story of Esther.
When Emily Hinton, a quirky and quick-witted Southern California girl, lands a job at the world-famous publishing house Morrow & Sons, she decides that she is moving to New York to find love and Louis Vuitton, no matter what her friends and family think.
Once in the city, however, Emily finds that in the highly secular world of a young Manhattanite, it’s anything but easy to balance her passion for New York’s glitz and glamour with her determination to live out her faith.
Eventually, the crisis comes to a head when Emily takes a stand for her faith, risking in the process her beloved job. Readers of CBA fiction, as well as general audience readers of contemporary women’s fiction like Bridget Jones’s Diary, will enjoy watching Emily trade in her Nikes for Prada in this funny and fabulous, modern retelling of the story of Esther.

intriguing contemporary tale .......2005-06-17
Her Uncle Matthew obtains Emily Hinton a job as assistant to a long time friend Bennett, a publisher at Morrow and Sons, a highly regarded Manhattan publishing firm. Though her parents are concerned that their daughter is moving to the capital of glitz, an excited Emily relocates from Jenks, California (near San Diego).
In New York, Emily tussles with the looser lifestyle as emulated by her roommate, her boss and her peers at the company. She finds some solace when she works at her Uncle's soup kitchen, but notices how his partner Josie loves him though Matthew is unaware of her feelings. Emily struggles between what she believes is right and the hedonistic fun of her new friends and city until she must take a moral stand on a book's content knowing it will cost her a job she treasures if she doe. Will Emily do what she believes is the right thing or will she remain silent as a lamb?
EMILY AFTER EVER is an intriguing contemporary tale starring a delightful protagonist struggling with the materialistic and often cynical assault on her spiritual beliefs. Emily is a terrific character who originally goes along to belong, but soon has doubts as she is uncomfortable with not being herself. Though her final stand turns too easily as black and white in spite of a revelation about the married Bennett and his "girlfriend" readers will admire Emily's courage to adhering to her beliefs rather than pretending all is well.
