              Book Description

Waiting for Daisy is about loss, love, anger and redemption. It’s about doing all the things you swore you’d never do to get something you hadn’t even been sure you wanted. It’s about being a woman in a confusing, contradictory time. It’s about testing the limits of a loving marriage. And it’s about trying (and trying and trying) to have a baby.
Orenstein’s story begins when she tells her new husband that she’s not sure she ever wants to be a mother; it ends six years later after she’s done almost everything humanly possible to achieve that goal, from “fertility sex” to escalating infertility treatments to New Age remedies to forays into international adoption. Her saga unfolds just as professional women are warned by the media to heed the ticking of their biological clocks, and just as fertility clinics have become a boom industry, with over two million women a year seeking them out. Buffeted by one jaw-dropping obstacle after another, Orenstein seeks answers both medical and spiritual in America and Asia, along the way visiting an old flame who’s now the father of fifteen, and discovering in Japan a ritual of surprising solace. All the while she tries to hold onto a marriage threatened by cycles, appointments, procedures and disappointments. Waiting for Daisy is an honest, wryly funny report from the front, an intimate page-turner that illuminates the ambivalence, obsession, and sacrifice that characterize so many modern women’s lives.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic: Reminds me of "Eat, Pray, Love".......2007-10-03

I thoroughly enjoyed this book-- surprisingly, because I didn't have any personal experience with infertility. I do have many friends and relatives with these experiences, so I was curious to understand more about what they're going through. The author is a brilliant and clever writer-- I loved her "voice"-- it reminded me of Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat, Pray, Love." She's funny, honest and insightful. This was actually a page-turner-- not what I would have thought for this type of memoir. I LOVED this book and I'm recommending it to all my friends.

3 out of 5 stars Waiting for Daisy .......2007-09-25

This book was difficult to read. Author was cold, hard to connect with and not easy to agree with. Definitely not like-able or personable. Very selfish individual. I hope she raises Daisy to Not be like her.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for those feeling alone or isolated in their fertility journey!.......2007-09-24

This book was a God-send to me in my own painful infertility journey. Peggy's descriptions of her mental states expressed my own, but in ways I could not put words to. From her initial ambivalence about parenthood, to all-consuming obsessions with achieving it, her relations with her husband, and frustrations with fertility specialists, her journey affirmed that I was not alone in my journey. Her sense of humor and wit actually made me giggle a few times and, mostly, helped me feel so much less alone. I would highly recommend this book!!

              5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.......2007-09-19

I read this book all in one evening. I loved every page of it. I have read just about every book on this topic, but no one has described, with such accuracy and eloquence, the trying to conceive journey like Peggy Orenstein. I have not read another book that I feel deals better with this topic, especially in terms of being realistic. Nothing seems forced, her doubts and concerns are so vivid. She states everything that has been swimming around in my head in such a clear and honest way, that it actually helped me to organize my own feelings about this struggle. I would recommend this book to everyone going through infertility, and to everyone who knows someone going through infertility, and to everyone else for that matter. It is beautifully written; touching, but funny; sad, but hopeful. This is a book that everyone will be able to relate to in one way or another.

5 out of 5 stars Poignant, funny, and on-the-mark!.......2007-09-13

Peggy Orenstein's portrayal of a quest for a child in "Waiting for Daisy" is candid and humorous. I enjoyed every chapter of this thought-provoking book. Orenstein's honest eloquence in expressing her feelings throughout her incredible journey moved me so much. Time and time again, I found myself thinking, "I thought I was the only one who felt that way!"

Whether you have ever been through any of Ms. Orenstein's challenges: cancer, infertility, IVF treatments, and adoption attempts, or whether you have simply felt somewhat ambivalent about parenthood.... this book is for you.

In A Tale of Two Continents physicist Abraham Pais writes of his life in war (hiding from the Gestapo for five years) and peace (learning to call the Dodgers "Bums"). David Gross of the Institute of Theoretical Physics says, "The book teems with anecdotes and stories of the great men and women he encountered, wonderful stories that often capture the personalities of these historic figures in a single paragraph. For the scores of thumbnail portraits alone the book is worth the price." Pais interleaves his more personal recollections with the story of post-war particle physics, providing the most accessible history of the field yet written.

              Book Description

People like myself, who truly feel at home in several countries, are not strictly at home anywhere," writes Abraham Pais, one of the world's leading theoretical physicists, near the beginning of this engrossing chronicle of his life on two continents. The author of an immensely popular biography of Einstein, Subtle Is the Lord, Pais writes engagingly for a general audience. His "tale" describes his period of hiding in Nazi-occupied Holland (he ended the war in a Gestapo prison) and his life in America, particularly at the newly organized Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, then directed by the brilliant and controversial physicist Robert Oppenheimer. Pais tells fascinating stories about Oppenheimer, Einstein, Bohr, Sakharov, Dirac, Heisenberg, and von Neumann, as well as about nonscientists like Chaim Weizmann, George Kennan, Erwin Panofsky, and Pablo Casals. His enthusiasm about science and life in general pervades a book that is partly a memoir, partly a travel commentary, and partly a history of science. Pais's charming recollections of his years as a university student become somber with the German invasion of the Netherlands in 1940. He was presented with an unusual deadline for his graduate work: a German decree that July 14, 1941, would be the final date on which Dutch Jews could be granted a doctoral degree. Pais received the degree, only to be forced into hiding from the Nazis in 1943, practically next door to Anne Frank. After the war, he went to the Institute of Theoretical Physics in Copenhagen to work with Niels Bohr. 1946 began his years at the Institute for Advanced Study, where he worked first as a Fellow and then as a Professor until his move to Rockefeller University in 1963. Combining his understanding of disparate social and political worlds, Pais comments just as insightfully on Oppenheimer's ordeals during the McCarthy era as he does on his own and his European colleagues' struggles during World War II.

5 out of 5 stars A divided life: Both sides.......2004-11-09

Abe Pais was in hiding during WWII in Holland (actually just across the street from where Anna Frank was hiding); but he was a few years older than Anna Frank, and he survived. While in hiding, he studied physics.
That part of the story reads like a thriller. But the narrative throughout is compelling, and honest.
After the war, through a sequence of small miracles, and a stunning intelligence, he ended up in Copenhagen to work with Niels Bohr, and then to the US, at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton, where he became a Professor. And in fact, he became a leading and exceptionally successful nuclear physicist.
Throughout his career as a physicist, he knew Niels Bohr, Albert Einstein well, and a host of the other pioneers; and he worked with them too. He is fluent in at least 7 languages, and knows many more. All of this is part of his autobiography, which is also filled with charming observations about cultural differences, and observation of human affairs; including affairs of the heart.
His whole life was divided between two Continents, hence the title of the book. But Abe Pais's life was divided in several other ways too: The first half was science, and the second writing. Marriages further marked dividing lines.
He wrote a number of extremely well received biographies, the best one perhaps `Subtle is the Lord' about Albert Einstein (I have a weakness for biographies!); and his last was his autobiography! In fact, he finished it only a few years before he died. The last 10 years of his life was spent in Denmark; so in some sense closing the circle.

Of this work Conan Doyle wrote, "I take a New Englander, a Puritan, as one type of the seventeenth century, and a New Yorker, the woodman, as another, and I precipitate these two into the court of Louis XIV, and mix them up in the European history of that time - very much as Scott threw Quentin Durward, the young Scotchman, into the French court. I have taken a lot of pains to make these two types exact studies. Then I shift the scene back to America. It will be something new in the way of an American historical novel. You see it will be the story of the two continents. The woodman will use the phrases of the wood, and the New Englander is rather Biblical."

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars From the royal court in France to the wilds of Canada.......2007-03-26

The first half of the book takes place in France, mostly having to do with the royal court and the service of the king. It has the excitement, drama, and intrigue of Dumas' "The Three Musketeers", only the young man we are watching is a Christian. Eventually he must choose between his faith, and his position. He is engaged to his cousin, also a Huguenot. When it becomes illegal to hold to their faith, they make a narrow escape across the ocean, with the help of two Americans. The Puritan sea captain conforms to the modern stereotype of the Puritans, with a disapproving glance at pleasure in God's creation (considering that we are not meant to enjoy life) and a habit of soberly calling down Biblical curses on those who are not of his way of thinking. My main disappointment in the book was this portrayal of New England Puritans. The other American is a backwoodsman, whose ideas tend to be much more liberal than his Puritan friend. Adele's father, being weak in health, asks that the two young people marry before his death, which occurs on the voyage. They also suffer shipwreck.

When they arrive in Canada, the Huguenots are discovered to be escaping persecution in France, and a Jesuit persistently follows them, to return them to "justice" and the Catholic religion. Their American friends help them to escape their prison ship which was to return them to France. They meet new companions, and see them scalped by the hostile Indians. As they flee on, they are eventually captured by the Indians, with the Jesuit still behind them. Once again, they are rescued just in time, and finally reach safe territory, where they are free to believe the truth of God's Word without interference.

The story is encouraging to see what others have been willing to suffer for their faith in Christ, and to see the history of so many who fled persecution. It is also a complex story, with many pieces which are eventually pulled together, and an unexpected complication to the plot around every corner. There is never a boring chapter, and though Christ shines through it, it is never preachy. I so appreciate riveting storylines that also hold up the Lord, and those who place their trust in Him. This book definitely falls into that category.

5 out of 5 stars Great, easy to read novel with great history of the Heugenot Persecution and escape of some of them!.......2006-12-27

This is just the most interesting book for a view of some of our past history, first in France and then in NE America while the Indian wars were still going on. With this, you realize the background from which Paul Revere's father escaped death from the Heugenot "cleansing" in Catholic-controlled France, came to America and apprenticed himself to a silver-smith in Boston. And so that story goes on in other books like Paul Revere and Freemasonry, by Stebleki. But this is a very good book, easy highschool age read, to flavor the history of why liberty was so much desired in the "new world" at that time.

It was the sort of window which was common in Paris about the end of the seventeenth century. It was high, mullioned, with a broad transom across the centre, and above the middle of the transom a tiny coat of arms—three caltrops gules upon a field argent—let into the diamond-paned glass.

                            Book Description

Anju wants a husband. Equally important, her entire family wants Anju to have a husband. Her life in Bombay, where a marriage can be arranged in a matter of hours, is almost solely devoted to this quest, with her anxious mother hauling her from holy site to holy site in order to consult and entreat swamis and astrologers. As Anju's twenties slip away, she's fast becoming a spinster by her culture's standards, so she moves to New York City to work in fashion.

For Matrimonial Purposes is the hilarious story of Anju's journey, her quest for love, and the choices that she must make while trying to remain true to herself and satisfy her family and tradition.

4 out of 5 stars Every Indian Girl has these moments!.......2007-10-05

                            I liked this book.
Every girl has a moment in their life where they feel like they might never meet that special someone.
This book gives proof to the saying someone where is out there for you.
Also it teaches about timing is something that only fate controls!!

3 out of 5 stars Don't read this in one sitting!.......2007-05-27

I wasn't sure if I should give this two or a three stars, after all I managed to finish it. I listened to this in unabridged audio two years ago on a single long drive. From what I remember, the writing was okay, the plot dragged, and the awfulness of the dialogue writing was only compounded by the narrating style of the reader (she read each sentence almost EXACTLY the same with a pace and style of intonation that was jarring - I literally wanted to pull my hair out.)

I began having a hard time sympathizing with the main character about one-tenth of the way in, when her despair over being unmarried got repetitive and annoying and started coming off as whiny. Many of her characters were one-dimensional caricatures, especially in the sections where she was trying to go for humor, and I took issue with some of her characterizations of Indian culture (though I don't remember exactly what they were). Also, her rise in the fashion circle seemed unrealistic, and I have a hard time believing she didn't feel any cultural tensions or experience disapprovals/stereotypes with her occasional sari outfittings in such elitist circles.

Accordingly, I can't say I particularly enjoyed the book. However, I could identify somewhat with the character's situation (not the whiny part) being in my late 20's, unmarried, and with despairing Indian parents. So it was gratifying to come to the end, and not just because I'd be done with the horror of narration, but because of how she resolved the character's tension. I have to say that part was sweet and endearing and made the (harrowing) journey there mostly worthwhile.

However, I'm not sure why this is so highly-rated on Amazon. The cynic in me thinks it's because it caters to and confirms the Western exoticization of South Asian courtship and marriage by a 'native'. But, maybe it's because the author did a fair job for many readers of universalizing a culturally specific conflict. Needless to say, I do not recommend the audio version of this, at least not in a single sitting or while you're driving. If you are familiar with the South Asian terms used, be prepared to laugh out loud (comic relief, I guess!) over the narrator's ridiculous (and inexcusable) mispronunciations!

                            2 out of 5 stars Kavita's unreal world.......2007-05-27

I picked this up at the local public library. Am happy that I did not spend anything (except a few hours) on this one.

I have lived in Mumbai for 23 years and in the US for more than 5 years. Kavita Daswani paints a totally unreal picture of both worlds. The novel is immature in many ways. Yes, it is just chick-lit, but it could have been more entertaining. After a certain point, I could not care less if Anju stayed a spinster. The stories of her attempts at matrimony got a little boring towards the end.

The character traits of Anju are pretty inconsistent too. Is she a typical Mumbaite? Is she a God fearing superstitious young Indian woman who cannot even go on a date without informing her parents? Does she turn into a glam fashionista towards the end? There is no way to tell. What exactly did want in a man? Was she prepared to say "Yes" to the first man who proposed to her? (After all, that is what she did in the end).

Who exactly is Anju? I am sure Kavita Daswani herself does not know.

A hastily wrapped up ending leaves the readers feeling cheated. It was as if Daswani just got tired of writing and decided to end the book one day. And she wrote the entire ending in one day or rather one sitting.

The fact that I read this one right after I read "Sister of my Heart" by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, made it worse. I know you cannot compare the two genres, but Kavita Daswani is simply not a good writer. Good writing either entertains or stirs up readers' emotions. And Kavita Daswani's writing fails on both counts.

3 out of 5 stars Racist, with many inconsistencies/unreal characters.......2007-01-20

After reading Lahiri & Desai's great books, I was ready for some light Indian reading. However, this book was just plain silly. The author makes many continuity errors while describing food & fashion, such as taking off D & G mules in one paragraph, then 10 minutes later, she is tired of walking in her stilettos. She orders a croissant and eggs in Paris, then in the next paragraph, sops the eggs up with toast. She just doesn't seem real. Her job is so unbelievable; what boss sends you to Los Angeles to scout out a new office and doesn't mind that you spend the whole time with your boyfriend? Come on.
The worst thing was, she made having dark skin seem like the kiss of death. While Anju reads a prospective groom's profile online, she hoped he wasn't too dark, but she figured he could always use a skin lightener. I found this deeply offending. Yes, I know that "tall/slim/fair" is a common request for Indian matchmaking, but she is just completely unapologetic about this prejudice.
It was fun to read about Indian customs/weddings, but other than that, this was just plain fluff.

3 out of 5 stars indian chick lit.......2006-06-25

There don't seem to be too many Indian chick lit books out there that are not depressing. This one is light and an easy read, while giving us american-borns a peek into the fascinating world of Indian dating and marital customs. Worth your while to read.
