        Book Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for single-ply rubber membrane roofing across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for single-ply rubber membrane roofing. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This is a ARMY AEROMEDICAL RESEARCH LAB FORT RUCKER AL report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A328414. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: In spite of an immense increase in interest in helmet-mounted displays (HMDs) over the past two decades, there have been few studies on head motion while using HMDs in operational flight Rotary-wing flights conducted using a number of HMD configurations have resulted in a head position database that will be useful in filling this void. Azimuth head position data have been analyzed for a slalom flight maneuver for four visual environments: good visual environment (daytime, unaided), night vision goggles, HMD with thermal imagery, and HMD with thermal imagery and symbology. The major thread throughout these analyses was that the pilots exhibited greatest head motion for the NVG environment. The two HMD configurations (TIO and RWS) were very similar in exhibited head motion, not indicating any significant differences between the TIO FLIR imagery alone and the RWS FLIR imagery plus symbology. Based on this analysis of the head azimuth position data, it is concluded that the interquartile range IQR (or some other lQR) dispersion statistic is a good discriminator between the head position distributions for the four visual environments. For all subjects, the IQR for the night vision goggle visual environment was larger than for the other three visual environments. Likewise, the IQR for good visual environment was always the second largest. The IQR values for thermal imaging only and rotary wing symbology, the most closely related visual environments, vie for third and fourth ranking.

                      Book Description

This book discusses the progress that is being made through innovations in instrumental measurements of geologic and geochemical systems and their study using modern mathematical modeling. It covers the systems approach to understanding sedimentary rocks and their role in evolution and containment of subsurface fluids.

Fundamental aspects of petroleum geology and geochemistry, generation, migration, accumulation, evaluation and production of hydrocarbons are discussed with worldwide examples. Various physical and chemical properties of subsurface waters, crude oils and natural gases are described which is especially important to production engineering. Among various properties of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons the most important are wettability affecting production characteristics and ultimate recovery: relative permeability affecting reservoir fluid flow to the production wells; density differences between immiscible fluids which affects gravity drainage; viscosity of subsurface fluids affecting the relative mobility of each fluid; and fluid chemistry, which affects the absorption, ultimate recovery and monetary value of produced hydrocarbons.

Discussion of the formation and accumulation of hydrocarbons includes (1) the changes in the chemical composition of hydrocarbons that originate from the debris of living plants and organisms to form crude oil and natural gas; (2) the origin of hydrocarbons in different areas of a single reservoir; (3) the conditions, which determine the distribution of water, oil and gas in the reservoir; (4) the migration of subsurface fluids until they eventually accumulate in isolated traps; (5) discussion of the traps as a function of sedimentary geology and tectonics. This is based on the systems approach to the specific geologic and geochemical systems using analytical and statistical principles and examples of modern mathematical modeling of static and dynamic systems.

                      * Discusses fundamental aspects of petroleum geology and geochemistry, and generation, migration, accumulation, evaluation and production of hydrocarbons
                      * Presents a systems approach to the specific geologic and geochemical systems

                        Book Description

In this wickedly satiric romp, Paul Theroux captures the essence of Hawaii as it has never been depicted. The novel's narrator, a down-on-his-luck writer, escapes to Waikiki and soon finds himself the manager of the Hotel Honolulu, a low-rent establishment a few blocks off the beach. Honeymooners, vacationers, wanderers, mythomaniacs, soldiers, and families all check in to the hotel. Like the Canterbury pilgrims, every guest has come in search of something -- sun, love, happiness, objects of unnameable longing -- and everyone has a story. By turns hilarious, ribald, tender, and tragic, HOTEL HONOLULU offers a unique glimpse of the psychological landscape of an American paradise.

3 out of 5 stars Just quirky enough to be entertaining.......2006-11-12

This story seems to be set in somewhat a modern Hawaii setting. Actually it is kind of like a whole bunch a stories; which is strung all together by the main character (the hotel manager). Since the author is haole, it is appropriate that his character is the under achieving hotel manager. The whole time I read it I just pictured the old Blaisdel Hotel on Fort Street. Some of the local characters seemed a little shallow, but if you can imagine Honolulu in the late sixties you might like this book.

5 out of 5 stars Connecting the Disconnected.......2006-04-01

I was going to give this novel four stars but, after reading the bad reviews and feeling how badly they've missed what makes this a great Theroux novel, I'm going to go ahead and give it five stars.
(My memories of other Theroux works is my sole motivation for taking a star off anyway).

Yes, there isn't a clearly-defined plot in HOTEL HONOLULU but the transient lives and lifestyles of the people who end up on that "rock in the middle of water" form a story that feels like a single entity. The characters are bold and vivid. Nothing whitewashed here: old white men rant about the Hawaiians and Asian women and vice versa.

Another wonderful quality about Theroux's writing is that he goes to remote and exotic locations and brings back a reality we've never seen, whether it's the South Sea islands or the dirt roads of Mongolia or the frozen train stations of Siberia...or America's paradise, Hawaii.

                        Bravo, Paul!

                        1 out of 5 stars truly awful...........2006-03-16

Imagine a world populated by old, smug, white men and poor, young women with great bodies and rape fantasies. Imagine a world where these young women all find the old men irresistibly attractive. Imagine many variations of the same story crudely retold in a succession of tedious chapters all with pitiful *surprise* endings. Add to this the odd chapter of author self pity. That's it.

I didn't even pass this book on to Oxfam - I binned it to save others the misery!

5 out of 5 stars A journey of laughter, fear, torment, and Self-Actualization.......2006-03-08

When I found this book I had actually been looking for Star Safari. But I was just about to take a trip to Hawaii, so I thought what the hell, lets give it a shot.
I am thankfully glad I did. It started off a little different than I had expected, but I was soon involved in the lives of these Island dwellers. Many things struck close to home in what I am looking for in my life and others seem so far away that I could not imagine them happening.
HH is truly a great travel companion. If you feel lost in life and are searching for an answer this book can give you some options on your path.
The one character that seems to have everything and is truly happy scared me to death. That character alone makes this book worth reading.

                        3 out of 5 stars My Thoughts.......2005-08-30

I'll start off by saying I'm not really a Theroux fan. That being said I think he is a very talented writer with a great writing style, but personally I do not care for his work.

I've read three PT books and liked this one the best out of those three. However, I would not go back and re-read it.

                        4 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Read with a Little Bite.......2007-07-04

This is not really a novel, and as soon as I realized that I was able to enjoy it. Really, it is a series of interlocking short stories which progress inevitably toward a conclusion but remain more or less self contained. The tone is pure Theroux; aloof but self mocking, with the capacity to be tender or surprisingly mean. Theroux's main characters are often himself; an educated foreigner, misanthropic and past middle age, searching for and shunning social acceptance. This book is an easy read, and fun, but it has a gleeful mean-spiritedness that may be off-putting and some moments of geniunely deep and touching sadness.
Paul Theroux is often accused of misanthropy, and this is probably not the book that will disprove those allegations. He is less frequently called a racist, but I think it's clear that Theroux is not slamming natives of Hawaii any more than the white immigrants, Asian tourists, or any other group.
I deducted one star since some of the vignettes have a bit of a lackluster feel, especially those that are necessary to advance the meta-plot. This is not his best novel, but it is very good.

3 out of 5 stars I hope Paul is feeling better now.......2007-04-25

I have always enjoyed Paul Theroux's writing, hence the three stars, however here, he is one angry man. This book was quite a surprise to me. I bought it at Barnes and Noble and paid full price, assuming that I would like anything by this author. The cover states that this is a New York Times and Washington Post notable book of the year. They refer to Theroux as 'irascible'. I guess I would say this is one misanthropic, misogynistic, racist diatribe. We are told in the information on the author that he now lives in Hawaii and Cape Cod. After reading Hotel Honolulu I would guess he might have more friends on Cape Cod; but even there it is questionable.
It purports to be a novel, however it is more a collection of vignettes, observations by the protagonist about his employer, his fellow employees and assorted guests and visitors. There are two people who come out somewhat intact, Henry James' biographer, with whom the writer claims a civilized affinity, and the Chinese/Vietnamese bartender, Tran. The writing is Paul Theroux's so it is not bad, the problem is the jaundiced eye of the writer.

4 out of 5 stars Theroux is back, and he's feeling mean........2005-09-21

Paul Theroux writing on autopilot is still better than many other authors at the top of their form. His well-known ability to describe a place or person in just a few perfect words, his creation of believable characters with clear motivations, his ironic detachment as these same characters mess up their lives, and his depiction of a writer's battle with the demons of his craft are among his many brilliant qualities, all on vibrant display here.

Ultimately, however, this novel was a disappointment to me. Set in a 3rd-rate hotel in Honolulu, it has the characters and setting of a novel (and is called a novel on the cover), but it is so lacking in any sort of unifying plot, that it's not even possible to write a plot summary. The huge cast of characters has only one thing in common--they all live and/or work at the Hotel Honolulu. While some characters are complete enough that they could have been worked into a wonderful collection of short stories, others are seen only in tiny, three- or four-page vignettes and add nothing significant.

Like the author, the narrator is a writer who has had a failed marriage and difficult divorce in England and who has come to Hawaii hoping to escape his bad memories and the pressures of the writing life. He likes Hawaii "because it [is] a void"--almost no one recognizes his name, and those who do have not read his books. He works as the manager of the Hotel Honolulu.

Unfortunately, this fragmented book is shockingly mean-spirited in tone, going way beyond good-humored satire, and demeaning almost every aspect of Hawaii, its people, and its culture, while also taking pokes at some American icons. Virtually every woman in the book either is or has been a prostitute. All are dimwits. Even the narrator's wife is the product of a one-night stand between a Honolulu prostitute and John F. Kennedy, a man she supposedly never recognized in this most Democratic state. Hawaiian/Filipino girls are depicted as fair game, sexually, for their fathers, uncles, brothers, and other relatives.

Hawaiians who speak pidgin among themselves are mocked and their language derided. When he uses Hawaiian words, Theroux sometimes deliberately misspells them. Fellow-author Stephen King also takes a hit here, Theroux saying, "it takes only a modest talent to write about misery." In a particularly low blow, he comments on King's near-fatal accident by saying, "Gross reality [the accident] overwhelms his puerile and implausible fantasies." This novel may have its virtues, but modesty, tolerance, and good taste are not among them. Mary Whipple
