This book is a teaching book for advanced undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels. Its primary goal is to link some contemporary applications in chemistry, biology and medicine to known photophysical principles and laser properties. Chapters 1-3 highlight the basic photochemical and photophysical principles associated with electronic states together with a survey of laser systems, timing, and related devices. The following chapters include several techniques and applications in the fields of chemistry, biology and medicine that are based on these basic principles. This approach provides a means of motivating the student to link simple scientific ideas to their potential applications. The discussed techniques were grouped according to the photophysical or laser characteristics that are common among them. For instance, the photophysical properties of internal conversion (ic) and vibrational cascade (vc) constitute the basis of techniques depending on changes in molecular flexibility. We discussed several techniques depending on this phenomenon namely the detection of salmonella by the commercially available 4-methyl umbelliferyl caprilate (MUCAP) reagent, the modification of fingerprints upon metal ion complexation, DNA quantification by flexible fluorescent stains. The heat evolution associated with vc process is the basis of thermal lensing techniques as well as the laser welding of some biological tissues. Molecular fluorescence, another photophysical deactivation pathway, is the workhorse technique in medical diagnosis and analytical applications. Description:
There is a lack of information on the environmental effects of urban change and the dynamics of greenspace. Such information is essential for a better understanding of the sustainability of urban development processes, both planned and unplanned. We therefore investigated the changes in land use and land cover of 11 residential areas in Merseyside, UK, using aerial photographs taken in 1975 and 2000. We then modeled how these changes would alter three important environmental parameters: surface temperature, runoff of rainfall, and greenspace diversity. These changes were then related to the socio-economic status of the areas, as measured by an index of multiple deprivation. The comparisons revealed a loss of greenspace in all 11 case study sites Overall, the more affluent, low density areas lost more greenspace, especially of tree cover. A major cause was infill development whereby gardens were built over. However, greenspace was also lost in already densely built-up, deprived areas due to the reuse of derelict land. As a consequence, the models used in this study predicted negative environmental impacts for all areas. The results emphasize the need to critically review concepts such as urban densification and give more weight to the preservation and management of urban greenspaces.

The Babe in old St. Pete. .......2005-11-04

What makes this mystery a stand out is it's sense of history and of place. You get the feeling that Irby, a professor, knows every building in old St Pete, has read every newspaper article, spent months in archives and in the library. His encompassing knowledge of the rough, free-wheeling twenties seeps in to every scene-the mystery, the love story, and the adventure all play out against a lively, realistic backdrop. Plus, it's got the Babe in it. You can't beat that. Check this book out. It's worth it.

Great Authors!.......2005-06-22

This is an amazing book for a debute. This author is well on his way. I learned about this book from the authors brother in law as I shopped for furniture in Richmond VA. I ordered it but wasn't really sure It was my kinda book. 1920s, baseball, Babe Ruth, not interesting to me. I did start reading it and was very surprised! I absolutely could not put it down. The best book I've read in a long time. could not wait to get to the end and then was so sorry when it was over. I'm checking all the time for Lee Irby's next book. Can't wait. Would love to e-mail him but can't find a cite.

Enter the 20's.......2005-04-17

My grandmother, Toots, often bemoaned the fact that she'd been so busy raising her family that she missed out on being a flapper, yet she could do the Charleston 'til the cows came home. Irby captures the talk, the characters, the larger-than-life Babe Ruth, still giving them a human quality that rings true. This book is not my usual read, but I found it captivating.

You shouldn 't like the characters that Irby writes about, but you do. His details captivate you.

This book is a fun read. Every chapter stands on its own. The ones on Babe Ruth are mesmerizing. They remind me of the stories my grand uncle used to tell me about his baseball years in the 20s and his accounts of the Babe.

Wouldn't surprise me that they make this one into a movie.

Can't wait for Irby's 2nd book.

I really enjoyed the characters and the writing style. Irene, the flapper, and Ginger, the moll, remind us that ours isn't the first era of strong, intelligent, and interesting women! Usually my reading stays on my nightstand. This book followed me all over the house--I couldn't put it down!
