                    Book Description

Prion diseases, also known as Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs), exist in both humans (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD)) and animals (scrapie, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), chronic wasting disease) and have the unique property of being infectious, sporadic or genetic in origin.
Although the precise nature of the infectious agent responsible for TSEs is not definitely identified, it is now clearly demonstrated that a protein named PrP (for Prion Protein) plays a critical role in the transmission and pathogenesis of TSEs.
This book provides the general description as well as the details of the techniques currently used for the study of prion diseases. Taking into account the pivotal role played by PrP it is not surprising that many Chapters of this book deal with the purification, the detection and the characterization of the different forms of this protein. In addition, in vitro, cellular and animal models specifically adapted to the study of TSEs, as well as bio-safety procedures are described. Each Chapter is written by scientists involved for many years in their respective domain of prion biology who give the best of their knowledge in this technical document. This volume is a very useful tool for any laboratory which recently decided to contribute to the study of TSEs as well as for teams already engaged in this field for many years but interested in extending their technical capacity toward new methods.

                    Features:
Purification of PrPC and the Pathological Isoform of Prion Protein (PrPsc or PrP-res)
                    Animal Models of TSEs

Our book provides the first elementary overview of mud and mudstone written for a broad spectrum of professionals, teachers and students in geology, petroleum geology and engineering, urban planning and development, paleontology and paleoecology, and architecture and archaeology. Mud and mudstone provide the foundations to master all their aspects and prepares you to dig deeply into the many fascinating questions of their origin, relationships to earth history and practical uses. Key topics include the production of mud, its transport, the important role of bottom oxygen, sites of deposition, burial, provenance, mudstones in basins and an overview of practical uses followed by an appendix and extended glossary.

                        Book Description

This volume is the first of a series on Physical Techniques in the Study of Art, Archaeology and Cultural Heritage. It follows a successful earlier publication by Elsevier (Radiation in Art and Archaeometry).

There has been an upsurge of interest world wide in cultural heritage issues, and in particular, large organizations such as UNESCO and the European Union are active in providing funding for a very diverse range of projects in cultural heritage preservation. It is perceived that it is essential to preserve the cultural heritage of societies, both to benefit the future generations of those societies, and to inform other cultures.

A growing need exists for the education of conservators and restorers because it is these professionals who will make decisions on how best to preserve our cultural heritage. This book series therefore has as its primary aim, the dissemination of technical information on scientific conservation to scientific conservators, museum curators, conservation science students, and other interested people.

Scientific conservation, as a discipline, is a comparatively modern concept. Interested scientists have for many years addressed scientific problems associated with cultural heritage artefacts. But their involvement has been sporadic and driven by the needs of individual museums, rather than a personal lifetime study of issues of conservation of for example, buildings, large functional objects, paintings, and so on.

In this book series contributors will come from both interested scientists and the museum-based scientists. The authors have been selected with an eye to involving young, and well as established, scientists.

Dr Jean Louis Boutaine, was Head of the Research Department of the Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musees de France at the Louvre. Dr Boutaine has had a most distinguished career within the conservation science community. He writes here on the concept of the Modern Museum.

Professor Casali is responsible for the teaching of Archaeometry at the University of Bologna. He has developed advanced equipment for both micro-Computer Tomography and for large-object Computer Tomography. His chapter deals with X-ray, neutron, and digital radiography as applied to the study of objects of cultural heritage significance.

Professor Tim Wess holds the Chair of Biomaterials in the Biophysics Division in the School of Optometry and Vision Science at Cardiff University. The systems in which he is interested contain collagen, fibrillin, and cellulose (which relate, in the cultural heritage discipline, to an interest in parchment and papers). A parallel interest is in the structure of bone and artificial composite materials (which relates to his interest in historical studies of bone materials). Chapter 3 will describe the techniques used to study alteration to structure of minerals in the bone. Preservation of intact bone mineral crystallites has been shown to relate to the endurance of amplifiable ancient DNA from archaeological and fossil bone. In collaboration with Drs K. Nielsen and Rene Larsen (School of Conservation, Copenhagen, Denmark) Tim Wess has analyzed the deterioration of historic parchments and also simulated ageing processes.
Chapter 5 has been written by Dr Andrew Hardy who began studying Middle Eastern eye cosmetics (kohls) in the early 1990's whilst working in Oman. He has continued this work at the Centre for Medical History, School of Historical, Political and Sociological Studies, Exeter University. The chapter summarizes and reviews the usage and composition of kohls in ancient (Pharaonic) Egypt. It also gives information, from later time periods, on kohl usage and its recipes, which have been studied using a wide range of experimental techniques.

                          Book Description

When identical twins Judy (smart businesswoman) and Jana (a desperate housewife) swap places trouble ensues.

Identical twins and former child stars of a Barney–like program, Judith and Jana Lee Tompkins have barely spoken to each other in ten years, when Judith stole Jana Lee's fiancé in college (and all hell broke loose as a result).

But now Judith is in a personal crisis, and she desperately needs Jana Lee to come take her place in her high–powered career so no one at the office will know she's cracking up. Jana, now a young widow whose life seems to be on hold, says yes in the hopes that she can leave Judy's life in better shape than she found it, and also find out what a life as a powerful city girl would have been like. Judy takes Jana's place in their childhood home running the old homestead–a much tougher job than she ever imagined.

But as problems crop up in corporate and home life, Jana and Judy find out that the grass is always greener, and life for both displaced twins proves to be quite a challenge. Hardest of all is resisting the men the other women left behind... but these two are about to find out the bad–old–days of college are over, and maybe what is Mr. Wrong for one sister might be Mr. Right for the other!

3 out of 5 stars Overused plot produces a charming story.......2006-11-29

Jana Lee lost her husband two years ago. A single widowed mom, she lives a quiet existence in the Washington state hometown she and her identical twin were raised in - heck - even the same house. When a very frazzled Jillian begs Jana Lee to switch places with her like they used to do as kids, she balks at first - after all the last time they did that, Jillian ran off with Jana Lee's fiance! But in the interest of placating her sister, she agrees and enters the big world of finance in San Francisco.

While working at Pitman Toys, she captures the eye of the VP who Jillian dry humped at the office Christmas party. But for some reason, Jackson is suddenly attracted to his CFO... As he chases her down, she flees, making the chase all the more sweet, and the gossip hounds more angry. When her fresh ideas outside the financial arena make everyone take notice, Jana Lee wonders if sedate Washington is what she wants.

Meanwhile, Jillian is supposed to be relaxing but instead tries to do a total house makeover for Jana Lee with the help of sexy sculptor Dean Wakefield and niece Carly. He's wondering what's gotten into the usually sedate and earthy widow, and when he comes across a picture of the twins, he realizes they've switched.

MacPherson has penned another charming romantic comedy with a fair amount of romance. The overused twin swap plot is not as bad as one would imagine, and MacPherson manages to breath a distinct personality into each of women, making for a charming story about taking a second chance.

4 out of 5 stars screwball romantic romp .......2005-11-30

After beating up the candy machine at work, stressed out Jillian Tomkins is given a week off to unwind at Serenity Spa where she pleads with her twin sister Jana Lee Tompkins Stivers to switch places like they used to until that final incident with Elliot the idiot in college led to an estrangement. The death of Jana Lee's husband led to a partial reconciliation, but the widow mother of a teen, sees a chance to escape her drudgery and further repair her relationship with her twin. Though she thinks they are doomed, she agrees.

In San Francisco at Pitman Toys, Jana Lee as Jillian immediately runs into trouble with every high heel step she takes as VP Jackson "Man-Zinger Hawks seems to desire her as he admits to himself she seems different, earthier than the corporate climber who jumped his bones last Christmas. At the same time Jillian as Jana Lee soon learns the craziness of life in the burbs from Carly the irritable and aloof teenage niece, the insane dog, and appliances that requires an engineering degree not an MBA. If she does not burn down her sister's home, Jillian's biggest zinger is repairman Dean Wakefield, who suddenly finds Jana Lee appealing.

This screwball romantic romp is a comical tale as the sisters struggle to survive what to each one is a foreign lifestyle. The twins make the tale appealing even while the audience along with Jackson wonders why Jillian could not ask for additional time off. This comedy of errors is fun as the two men suddenly in the twins' lives wonder how they missed the endearing qualities they suddenly have discovered. Fans will feel amused, absorbed and bewitched.
